  1. QUOTE(redandwhite @ Oct 11, 2006 -> 12:49 PM) Schilling will be back, absolutely, postively not one single chance he retires this offseason. I think the better question has to be if Red Sox fans want him back. He was horrible in the 2nd half, and ended the season hurt. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Oct 11, 2006 -> 01:44 PM) The last time I sifted through this thread, it had about 5 pages. Is there anything of real substance in it? An actual rumor? No...we're good at speculating on speculation
  2. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Oct 11, 2006 -> 02:04 PM) I personally believe at least 3 of last years CS teams would have won this years World Series and probably all 4. JMO though. All 4 would have without a doubt in my mind. The Angels pretty much lost the ALCS in game 2; otherwise I think that's a 6-7 game series for sure. If Vlad had been hot that series, the Angels could have easily won it too. And their pitching all around is better than either of the teams in the ALCS, and I truly believe that. And both the Stros and Cards were amazingly solid last year. The Cards all around were a better team last year than the Mets, and the Stros pitching would have made either the Cards or Mets look like AAA hitters.
  3. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Oct 11, 2006 -> 10:58 AM) Don't forget the new stadium they finally managed to talk the state out of. Now's not the time they want to appear too cheap, especially if there are a few fans who still like Hunter (Jim would know that better than me). Hunter's the firey veteran who everyone still likes, even if his game has fallen off a little bit, but he's been overtaken both in the lineup and in status, because Mauer, Morneau, and even Cuddyer to some extent have become more dependable than Hunter, while Santana and Mauer are the faces of the franchise. In other words, he's worth the $12 million to the Twins, even if it's just for this year.
  4. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Oct 11, 2006 -> 01:50 PM) So yesterday on Mike and Mike and BBTN, Steve Phillips basically said that this years Tigers team has a tougher road through the playoffs than last years Sox just cause we didn't have to play the Yankees: "But the White Sox didn't have to play the Yankees." And instead of Clemens, Pettitte, Oswalt, and Backe, the Tigers get to face the Mets/Cards pitching staffs. SO HARD
  5. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Oct 11, 2006 -> 11:02 AM) Last night during the ALCS Game, in about the middle of the game: The 3 in the booth are talking about Jim Leyland and how important a manager can be to winning. How he set a winning attitude, etc. Brennaman tosses out something to the effect of "I can think of a manager who won a world series with the Cincinnati Reds who was pretty good as well" Lou Pinella: "Yeah, we were pretty good. I like winning" Steve Lyons immediately tosses out: "Then why did you take that Tampa Bay job!?" A few seconds of really, really awkward silence follows, before Thom tries to cover for Pinella by saying the management promised to build more and so on. Lou Piniella looked amazingly pissed off for a couple innings last night, especially when they were talking to him about the Yankees job. I know a lot of people want to know about Lou and the Yankees, but they know he couldn't say anything if it was true, so why on earth would they ask? I'm just happy Lou was great with a comeback, talking about how good of a guy Torre is and all that.
  6. QUOTE(RME JICO @ Oct 11, 2006 -> 03:32 AM) That's a hard loss for OAK to take. They lose to Robertson vs Zito. Now they have to face Zoolander and the Camera-Puncher. I'm not sure I've seen a more pathetic showing in the ALCS than what Oakland put out there today.
  7. QUOTE(AirScott @ Oct 10, 2006 -> 06:48 PM) not many teams win in the playoffs with a 4.18 bullpen ERA either. Florida Marlins, 2003 - 4.29 New York Yankees, 2000 - 4.52 The DBacks(3.84) and Red Sox(3.87) weren't much better. However, not many teams win with a team ERA of 4.41. The playoffs are all about starting pitching and having about 3-4 relievers you can count upon. The regular season is largely dependent upon having a good bullpen and having respectable starters. There's a pretty good reason as to why Oakland and Detroit are in the ALCS right now instead of Minnesota and New York, and it's all about starting pitching. You think the Sox would have won it last year without good starting pitching?
  8. QUOTE(Cuck the Fubs @ Oct 10, 2006 -> 09:02 PM) Or Canseco Huh? I don't get the comparison Arnold = 59 Canseco = 42 17 years difference is kind of huge
  9. QUOTE(fathom @ Oct 11, 2006 -> 12:31 AM) 2004 stats don't mean anything now. They're about as worthless as Scott Podsednik's left arm. The comparison is good though. The Sox signed Uribe to an extension following his 2004 season - 3 yrs, 9.75 mill - and he's been mediocre offensively since, and some on this site argue that he is a burden to next year's team and he needs to be replaced. He can be traded still though due to the fact that he has actual value. If Crede signs 5/50, and goes into 03-05 crapper mode again, the Sox are screwed, plain and simple.
  10. It would be nice It'll also cost probably about $20-25 mill to even have a chance to negotiate with him.

    New Sox fan

Jermaina, Harolda, or Sodaa would have been better choices Congrats man! Hope all is well with the Misses too
  12. QUOTE(AirScott @ Oct 10, 2006 -> 09:36 AM) why is it any more believable this year? Not many teams lose in 4 in the playoffs with a team OBP of .363, which has to be one of the highest, if not THE highest, team OBP of all time. For simple comparison's sake, the White Sox's offense, which was the best in the majors in the first half, had 5 players - 2 of whom were bench players - with an OBP over .363.
  13. QUOTE(greg775 @ Oct 9, 2006 -> 11:45 PM) Taken off the AP wire tonight. You still want A-Rod?? He is a loser. Entirely ARod's fault that the Yankees had a .691 OPS in the 3 games. Definitely. How's ARod sound?
  14. QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Oct 9, 2006 -> 10:54 PM) Good teams in the NFL right now: Bears, Colts, Broncos, Chargers, and Eagles. Teams on the brink: Jaguars, Ravens, and Bengals. If you are going to put the Bengals on the brink, you MUST include the only team that completely ripped them apart. The Patriots are still a very solid team, and will win 11 games and the AFC East(and yeah, I'm kind of backing off my preseason prediction of Miami winning the East...looks like my jinx has worked wonders so far )
  15. Losman was solid until he played the Bears. I was almost right so far
  16. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Oct 9, 2006 -> 05:18 PM) But in Minny's bullpen, there's some real candidates for regression next year as well. As the White Sox saw painfully this year, there's a ton of variation in bullpen performance for many pitchers from year to year. Minny's bullpen got dynamite years from guys like Matt Guerrier, Jesse Crain, Pat Neshek, Dennys Reyes, and "Steroids" Rincon. Yes, Nathan will be good next year barring injury. But there's a high probability that at least one, if not several, of those guys will wind up taking steps backwards next year, because that is just how things go in bullpens. If there is regression, there is also progression. A lot, if not all, of those guys will regress to some extent next year. However, they have up and coming arms in Perkins and Durbin who could make an impact for them next year, and there is Willie Eyre, who pitched absolutely horrible at the beginning of the year, but put up a very solid second half(3.99 ERA, 1.43 WHIP in 29.1 IP). It's not a guarantee, but it's very possible.
  17. QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Oct 9, 2006 -> 10:56 PM) Pods, Iguchi, Uribe, and Anderson need to be table setters. Same with AJ in my mind. That's actually the only reason I'd want Uribe out. If he were in the Yankees lineup, he would've had 100 RBI being a 9 hitter just due to everyone else getting on base around him. In the Sox lineup, his value is completely minimized because there's never anyone on base around him. Plain and simply, he clears the table, he doesn't set it. Iguchi's fine - a .352 OBP is nothing to scoff at - and Anderson was a rookie, so I have no doubt he'll show improvement of some type. Podsednik is gone, and we've all kind of figured that out. Uribe's a wild card, and that's about that.
  18. QUOTE(sircaffey @ Oct 9, 2006 -> 09:21 PM) Zimmerman's a rookie who put up similar if not better stats than Crede...in RFK. Zimmerman should win the GG in the NL for sure. If not this year, he will have many when his career is over. Tigers ERA - 3.84 Twins ERA - 3.95 Indians ERA - 4.41 Royals ERA - 5.65 Mets ERA - 4.14 Marlins ERA - 4.37 Braves ERA - 4.60 Phillies ERA - 4.60 Seeing how similar those ERAs are, and considering how much better offenses are in the AL, I'm going to say that Crede was better. If Zimmerman and Crede were to hypothetically switch places, I think Crede greatly outproduces Zimmerman, though with fewer home runs in all likelyhood. That's not me arguing over who I'd take now or who will be better in the future. That's Zimmerman without a second thought.
  19. Of threads that cover one topic(and not catch-all's, rumors, game-threads, etc)...it's the Vazquez trade. Just a little over 1200 replies to that. Of the rest, the longest was started by ME...yayaya...a rumors thread for the 2004-2005 offseason. Vazquez trade Rumors Thread Unless of course it's just Soxtalk in general, in which case Tony is right by like 3000
  20. QUOTE(beck72 @ Oct 9, 2006 -> 04:48 PM) With Chris Stewart as backup, I think he'd be the one to catch Haeger. In the 6th/7th inning when Haeg's comes in for some middle relief? I do not think so
  21. QUOTE(sircaffey @ Oct 9, 2006 -> 06:42 PM) Add Zimmerman to the list. Garrett Atkins as well. Cabrera, Arod, Wright, Zimmerman, and Atkins then Rolen/Crede. Zimmerman and Atkins due to what? Zimmerman was a rookie who had a worse statistical season Crede did, while Atkins hit the hell out of the ball....in Coors. Everyone hits the ball in Coors. I will also buy very few arguments based upon defense against Crede. I haven't seen Zimmerman play much, but I've heard that he is very good defensively at 3B. I haven't heard anything at all about Atkins. IMO, Crede is top 4 among 3Bman in the majors. The 3 DA mentioned, and then Crede, and I can't say Rolen is better due to his injury troubles over the past couple years, though he probably is. Chavez was quite bad this year, but I expect a pretty big bounce year from him next year. That's next year, and not now.
  22. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Oct 9, 2006 -> 02:01 PM) Add it up. Assuming you use one of the $10M arms to get A-Rod, combined with Fields, you're adding $6M in payroll with A-Rod... Thome -- 8 Dye -- 6.5 Iguchi -- 3.5 Kong -- 12.5 Crede -- 6 Pierz 5.5 A-Rod -- 16 Sweeney +Anderson -- 1 That's almost $59M plus $40M left in the rotation, plus a few Million to the bullpen, plus 2-4.5M for a reserve MIF (Cintron or Uribe), plus 2.5M for Mack, plus a back-up catcher, plus Gload nearing $1M, and you're looking at a $115M payroll. Toss in Roberts on top of that, and you're approaching 120. So basically, with the addition of ARod, and an addition of Roberts, there's a huge need to trade not only just the one starter for ARod, but yet another as well. I personally would not be completely opposed to that, so long as a young starting pitcher is brought along with the package. Either that, or you can go crazy and try to bring in as many journeymen starters as you can as NRI to spring training and hope you find one that will satisfy the role for 3 months until Broadway is ready. And even in doing that, you are still looking at a $110 million payroll. Whether JR is completely opposed to that or not is something I have no knowledge of, but it's not nearly as bad as increasing the payroll $20 million.
