QUOTE(Felix @ Nov 11, 2005 -> 08:55 PM) If we get a big bat, I'm fine with Anderson starting in center. The production in center would basically become a null point if we could get a big bat to DH, so I don't think it would matter. If Rowand is just traded just for the sake of opening a spot up for Anderson, I think it would be a mistake. I'm not counting on the bat being brought in to DH. I'm assuming the Sox were to lose Konerko here. If the Sox retain Konerko, then it brings it into a whole new light.

QUOTE(Felix @ Nov 11, 2005 -> 08:40 PM) Have you read what I've said? If the trade is for a big bat, I can understand it. I've said this now 4 times in this thread (I consider Thome to be an over the hill, injury prone player however) I've read you say that over and over. It's a bit nauseating when you don't seem to really believe it yourself. You are all for trading Rowand for a big bat, yet you seem to want no part of Anderson starting in CF. Who do you suggest we have start, Timo? JoBo? No one is asking Anderson to be great...but considering he was a little banged up this year, and still managed to put up an .830 OPS in AAA, you gotta like his chances of atleast putting up Rowand type numbers. Also, regarding Thome...I don't think he's a .300 50 150 .950 type player anymore...but if he stays healthy, hes almost guaranteed .270 35 120 .875, or better. A lot of players being brought in are brought in because of risk-reward...hell, I'm sure all players being brought in are evaluated using that type of method. Last year, the White Sox entire offseason seemed to be viewed as high-risk, high-reward...either it was going to gel and do amazing things, or it was going to fail miserably and the team would go into a complete rebuild mode by July. In conclusion, I think we're all happy with the results.

QUOTE(infohawk @ Nov 11, 2005 -> 07:48 PM) What does Philips propose the Indians would do with Travis Hafner if they acquired Frank to be their DH? Why on earth would the Indians want to push Hafner's bat out of the line-up considering he is a thumper and younger than Big Frank? I didn't think playing Hafner in the field is much of an option. Ya I thought about that too. He can't play 1B anymore, so signing him would be destructive to the Indians. Anyways, I liked these predictions. They made me laugh.

QUOTE(Felix @ Nov 11, 2005 -> 08:31 PM) Anderson had a .829 OPS in AAA. Is that great? Not really. Put him in AAA for another year, see if his numbers improve, and then think about dealing Rowand. So that way the Sox miss out on Thome/Delgado?

QUOTE(The Critic @ Nov 11, 2005 -> 07:43 PM) No, but he DID sign another "diminishing skills" clause....

QUOTE(Felix @ Nov 11, 2005 -> 07:46 PM) As of next year, Rowand is a key player in the organization, whether it be with clubhouse chemistry, defense, or with the bat. How so? If involved in a trade for Thome, we will probably lose next to nothing in chemistry. From everything I've read and heard, Thome is great in the clubhouse. We lose a stooge, but we gain about 30 homers. If involved in a trade for Delgado, we added to the growing number of Latino players on the White Sox. I'm sure Delgado would be perfectly happy. And about the defense and bat - by all accounts, Anderson should be able to put up atleast a .700 OPS next year. Considering what we would be adding with the addition of Thome/Delgado, that's a number the Sox can afford at the bottom of the order. If by some stroke of luck, Anderson turns into a .750-.800 OPS player, the Sox have gained much more offense from last year. If he manages to pull an .850-.900 OPS out of his ass, well then I'll be just f***in shellshocked. Not to mention that Anderson is just as good defensively as Rowand along with being a little over $3 mill cheaper. I love Rowand...hell, you can see me arguing over in the Owens thread on the FutureSox Board to keep him in Chicago to have him be the starter next year...but if it means Thome or Delgado, then by all means, I'm for taking a chance. And it's not like a solid CFer is never available. You can go back probably the past 10 trade deadlines, and find OFers being traded all over. Hell, last year, in one of the worst buyer markets in recent past, even involved 3 OFers being shipped off - two of them twice - in Lawton, Winn, and Cruz, and there may be more I'm not even thinking about.

QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Nov 10, 2005 -> 01:24 AM) Why dont guys learn its much better to admit to it. Giambi admitted to it and the media was never on his case and while being booed it was nothing like what Palmiero got. And than Lawton admitted to it and nothing really has been said against him. And he is one of the biggest players to be caught under the new policy. Because he has lied and lied and lied before finally admitting. Lawton was very open about it and never tried to cover it up. He didn't lie to Congress. Palmeiro's a joke.

QUOTE(Heads22 @ Nov 9, 2005 -> 08:16 PM) Wow, I'm getting old if I can remember Lyle. No you're not. I can remember him too. Now if you could remember like Black Jack pitching with the Sox, that would be a different story. Lyle Mouton...that is going way back though. I remember he hit a game winning homer against the Rangers early in the season. The Rangers were unbeaten at the time IIRC...8-0 perhaps? I'll dig it up real quick, even though I think I've dug it up before...lol. EDIT: Ya, I thought so. Was off by 1 in the W-L...Texas was 7-0 going in. Mouton, game winner

QUOTE(poorme @ Nov 9, 2005 -> 06:38 PM) I saw you in Durham...maybe August? You pitched well enough to win, but the bullpen couldn't hold it for you. Hopefully having to pitch with that stuff will make you a better pitcher when the arm gets back to full strength. Either way there were tons of successful lefties that couldn't break 90. Sox had a couple of soft tossers that come to mind, Ricky Horton and Dave LaPoint. God, I don't think Horton could hit 85. KELLY WUNSCH...lol

Owens nomintated for Sportsman of the Year
witesoxfan replied to White Sox Josh's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
He's talking about his Superbowl game. Not any of this media s*** he's gone through. You're going to have a hell of a time convincing anyone on here that TO's Superbowl was not gutsy. -
In all likelyhood, the first player with 500 career homers to not be in the Hall; the first player with 3000 career hits not in the Hall; first player with 540 doubles not to be in the hall(except Pete Rose)(those that are not of eligibility yet - Biggio, Ripken, Bonds, and Gwynn - are all HOFers in my book) If he's signed by any team, I'm gonna be disappointed.

A little off-topic... Anyone think people overguess Paulie's age because he came up as a 21 year old with Cincinatti, and he was starting and putting up good numbers with the White Sox at 23? It feels like the guy has been here forever - 7 years is a long time in the baseball sense - and so I think people figure he's like 32 or so just because of that. The only thing I ever worry about regarding Paulie is his hip condition, and how serious it is. I'm not a huge fan of a 5 year, $65 mill deal - hell, I'm not a huge fan of a 4 years, $48 mill deal - but that doesn't change the fact that the best replacements you are going to find are not only going to cost money due to their contracts, but are also going to cost the teams in terms of players. When considering that, 5 years, $65 million sounds a hell of a lot better than, say, Gio and Anderson for Delgado, or something along those lines plus 4 years and god knows how much more money on an incoming contract.

QUOTE(SnB @ Nov 9, 2005 -> 02:07 PM) A baseball videogame.........where there will actually be a franchise mode that you can play through multiple years? I did always like WSB 03 when it came to that. The development of players sucked, because there was nothing you could really do to make it consistent...some guys would sit in the minors and just explode, while some guys would do the same and just sit there. Other guys would get called up and explode, and others would sit there. Some guys would put up huge numbers and have their ratings stay the same, yet the next year they'd suck and then get injured and they'd be an all-star after that. That's about the only thing that really sucked. I got ESPN 2k5...and while it reminds me a little of WSB 03, it doesn't have the same feel at all. Hitters and pitchers alike develop way too well - when your entire lineup has guys with 100 AVG ratings against both RHP and LHP while all being able to draw a walk, and then you have guys in the minors with ratings of 95-100 AVG wise because you are just too deep, you have a problem. Kills time though, I do I like that aspect of it.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Nov 8, 2005 -> 03:23 PM) I don't think he will get released. I think he will end up as a piece in a bigger puzzle of a trade this winter. I thought Borchard was a FA after this season. Maybe I am thinking wrong though. Either way...I'm not sure he has much value anyways. If he is involved in a trade, I'd have to imagine he's either going to be a throw-in or he'll be traded in an Escobar for Owens type fashion.

QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Nov 7, 2005 -> 11:08 PM) Numbers Off-Field Crap It's been proven time and time and time again in this thread that Owens has better numbers. I think it's safe to say you can stop arguing that point. And Owens has a big mouth. I prefer a big mouth over one of my players running into an officer on duty and an admitted marijuana smoker* any day of the week. *I am not at all against marijuana smoking, I just don't want one of my players ingesting an illegal substance one way or another during the season...that's just outright dumb -
Mark Shapiro, NOT Kenny Williams, Exec of the Year

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Nov 8, 2005 -> 12:20 PM) I keep seeing people mentioning a Frank Thomas platoon, and you hit it right on the head. Ozzie would NEVER keep a guy on the bench who didn't have a postition to play defense at. Heck he didn't want Ross Gload who could only play first base. The only way Frank Thomas is back is as the starter. I'd want to agree...but it's hard for me to do so. It seems like Oz has a ton of respect for Frank, as he should, and I am just not sure he'd want to not have him on the roster. That platoon would be fun as hell. You'd get like 50-60 homers from that, and probably 140-160 RBI. That's just f***in ridiculous.

Bull will get a shot somewhere. Guys just don't continually put up good numbers and not get a shot somewhere down the line in some facet. Maybe he'll be a mop-up guy for the worst team in baseball...maybe he'll be a successful middle reliever/swingman for a pretty solid team all around. Maybe he'll come up and he just won't pitch well. No matter the case...I think he'll get a shot somewhere at some time - this assuming he continues to put up good numbers next year and the year after and so forth.

Mark Shapiro, NOT Kenny Williams, Exec of the Year
witesoxfan replied to The Ginger Kid's topic in Pale Hose Talk
LOL You can't use the "Shapiro made the moves he did prior to this year but you can't judge him then" argument - KW did the same thing. Cliff Politte, Jose Contreras, Freddy Garcia, Juan Uribe all come to mind right away, and I'm sure I'm forgetting some, or not counting some(count Cotts or not? count Marte or not?...and there are a couple others you can do that for, though Willie Harris didn't have a huge impact on the overall team, even if he did have the World Series winning run). KW not only made those moves, but he added 4 new starters offensively(Dye, Podsednik, Iguchi, and Pierzynski), added a starting pitcher that the Sox needed pretty badly, added 3 other relievers in Hermanson, Vizcaino, and Jenks. He is also the one that hired Ozzie, who is probably one of the best managers all in all in the game(I say this knowing I may take a lot of heat...but you can't argue with the results, and he made some hella ballsy moves that won us the World Series). Also, the main group of Shapiro's moves that were made panned out LAST year...Hafner was very good in 04, as was Victor, and again, I'm sure I'm missing some. How KW is not executive of the year and Shapiro is is something I won't know. That is probably one of the worst calls ever. -
QUOTE(winninguglyin83 @ Nov 8, 2005 -> 11:47 AM) His numbers suggest he can command the strike zone, but he's got little pop, especially for a corner infielder. His 37 doubles and 9 homers in AA suggest differently. I see no reason why he wouldn't be a .280 25 80 .380/.450/.830 player at the majors. Not this year, obviously...but to say he has no pop is a little ridiculous. Those homer totals could be a bit low too when all is said and done...I have never seen Rogowski play, so I don't know what his swing looks like, but from what I can tell of his numbers at AA, and how big he is(6'3, 230), he could be a pretty solid power hitter when all is said and done.

Buehrle > Wood in the ESPN Fake Press Conference Thread QUOTE(Buehrle>Wood @ Nov 7, 2005 -> 05:44 PM) You know what was funniest? The fact that they had some big Warning lable that the whole thing was fake. Yeah, like someone was dumb enough to hire Steve Phillips as a GM.

Why the Bears should take a shot at T.O.
witesoxfan replied to GoRowand33's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
When comparing receivers, are we talking who is more talented, or who is the better producer? If we're talking talented...that's easy as hell. Moss is a 6'4 giant with a huge vertical and like 4.15 speed to go along with pretty good hands. That's as talented as a receiver gets. Being that long and skinny has its downfalls too...due to it, he's more injury prone than Owens is. That's going to hurt his numbers long term. Production wise...the numbers speak for themselves. Owens is much better than Moss. One thing to be considered...Moss has had, IIRC, Cunningham, George, Culpepper, and Collins as his QBs. Owens has had Garcia and McNabb. Maybe it's just me, but I think I'm going to give the nod for starting QBs behind the receivers to Moss...making his lesser recent career numbers compared to Owens even worse. Considering everything on the field wise...give me Owens any day of the week. -
QUOTE(joeynach @ Nov 7, 2005 -> 08:20 PM) A lot of cubs fans have been really bitter, after all they are seeing the tide turn against them right before their eyes. I mean now the sox are the popular name, now their stadium and its fandeck and fundamentals are the cool unique features (not scoreboard and ivy), now we have the big name manager, now we have the spotlight. Not so sure about this. Nationally, atleast for a little bit(anywhere from 3 months to the next year), I'd agree. I haven't been to Chicago...but I have long thought about this, and I kind of figure 2006 is a huge year for the Cubs. I am counting on the Sox winning anywhere from 90-105 games, and at the very least, contending until the last week of the season. So to me, I think Chicago is basically the Cubs to lose at this point. Assuming I am right, and the Sox do win that amount of games, and either take the Wild Card or division, or just compete to the end...I think the Cubs have to do the same for the town to remain equally split, or better if they want to regain the city fully. If they are mediocre again - which I think they will be, because I'm not sure they can fill that many holes in one offseason - and the Sox win the division, and make another playoff push, it's a Sox city again.
