QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Apr 8, 2017 -> 01:30 PM) Just got to hope the internal options struggle. If so, I have no doubts Luhnow panics and comes crawling back to us sooner rather than later. He should be under some serious pressure at this point to deliver a winner. This I am in agreement with. Given their quotes this offseason, it seemed their mentality leaned towards comfort in going into the season with their current rotation, but McCullers has been injury prone, Morton has been injury prone, and McHugh is out now. They have talented pitchers, but talented pitchers don't always come up and pitch well right away. Look no further than the AL Central - Giolito struggled last year, Berrios was a train wreck, and Bauer hasn't lived up to his prospect status either. I could see this heating up even before June, as long as Quintana is his normal self.

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Apr 8, 2017 -> 01:56 PM) It has to be insurance for sure. But, in a rebuilding period you ight think young guys get the call but maybe our future OFfers are a good year or two away If he comes up, shows he can still rake against lefties, can still play OK defense, and you can flip him for a small piece at the deadline. Worst case scenario is that he never plays in the majors, which isn't a big deal.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 7, 2017 -> 02:09 PM) Why is this Cody Asche on our team? Give Davidson all the at bats or anybody else. Leury Garcia is annoyingly bad as well Cody Asche DOB: 6/30/1990 Matt Davidson DOB: 3/26/1991 There is less then a year separating these two players. As far as I'm concerned, they're both worthy of getting at bats for the Sox.

QUOTE (Buehrlesque @ Apr 7, 2017 -> 04:12 PM) Though this is the conventional wisdom, I don't completely agree with it. Elite slugging 1B/DHs can have more impact, and thus could be considered the priority. I'll generally take a meh catcher who can handle the pitching staff, play solid D, and give menial offensive from the bottom of the line up. If Collins becomes a really really good hitter, a centerpiece to the offense, I personally would rather him play the less physically strenuous position of 1B/DH than catcher, especially if he'll never be more than slightly below average defensively behind the plate anyway. Not sure Collins' bat will rise quite to that level, but if it does the Sox will have a decision to make. You can still have him catch 80-120 games a year, which gets you a better bat in the lineup otherwise, and have him DH/1B for 20-60 games a year too. That saves some of the wear and tear but frees up a spot in the lineup to get a guy with a bat in the lineup. It would probably require a very serviceable emergency catcher, but I don't necessarily see that as an issue. That's going to affect, what, 1 or maybe 2 games a year? And even if Collins were DHing and the catcher was hurt or pinch hit for and you lost the DH for the rest of the game, it's one game. I could see the Giants moving Buster Posey off catcher in the next year or two, but that will still have given them 7-8 years of Posey catching, which provides huge surplus value and allows them to utilize Brandon Belt. You let Collins try and catch as long as you can. The Sox are in no need to rush him to the majors, even if the bat would play.

QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Apr 7, 2017 -> 02:27 PM) We'll see. I don't think they will either but their fans can enjoy getting bounced from the playoffs by the Cubs again in October. Frankly, that would probably happen with or without Quintana.

QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Apr 7, 2017 -> 01:10 PM) Rich Hill on 10-day dl due to blister. The Dodgers have like 8 guys who are projected to up 2+ WAR/160 IP. They won't be interested in Quintana.

QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Apr 7, 2017 -> 10:07 AM) Nice win. Hopefully we only get about 59 more of these threads lol I'm OK if they do it 99 more times too.

don't they know they are supposed to lose all of these games?

QUOTE (sin city sox fan @ Apr 6, 2017 -> 05:19 PM) When they were 23-10 last year, they had won one game by a 10-1 score. No other victory was by more than 6 runs. We are going to the World Series this year! Book it!!!!!! http://chicago.whitesox.mlb.com/schedule/s...le.jsp?c_id=cws Winning by 5 or more runs is considered a blow out, so saying "no other victory was by more than 6 runs" is still saying "they won the game by the same margin as two 3-run homers." If you lose 7-2, you got the s*** kicked out of you.

QUOTE (GreenSox @ Apr 5, 2017 -> 08:14 PM) Can't get too upset about this. Pelfrey is the type of pitcher they signed to round out the rotation when they were contending. But this idea of "flipping him" is la-la land stuff. They'll have hard enough time moving players with pulse like Frazier, Melky, Jones, and Robertson.....he's even behind the que of Holland, Gonzales and Shields. I doubt they move 4 of those guys. I don't think it's crazy to think that it could happen. To think that it's likely is crazy.

I can tell the difference because they use different tones when they post.
-
This is an incredible exercise in gluttony. I must have this.
-
Worst that can happen is that he sucks. Maybe there's enough there to work with that he can be viewed as a capable back of the rotation starter for a contender and he gets flipped for a couple of pieces. Scott Feldman looked like a lost cause when the Cubs signed him, and they turned him into Arrietta and Strop. Not saying it will happen, but that's your best case scenario.

Matt LaPorta put up a 1.400 OPS his last year at Florida. Pedro Alvarez put up OPS's over 1.000 every year. There are examples all over the place. If he's that age and doesn't display athleticism, there is deserved skepticism regarding Beer being a top pick.

QUOTE (GreenSox @ Apr 1, 2017 -> 10:02 AM) Not that it matters, but what is the theory behind Cody Asche on the roster? 1200 PAs and .684 OPS. .298 OBP. Just that he hits left-handed? I'm sure Blue Jays fans in 2010 were also saying "WTF, why is Jose Bautista on the roster? 29 years old, 1911 plate appearances, and a career .242/.334/.412/.746 95 OPS+ in his career. Stupid." Then he exploded. It is the exception to the rule, but Asche has put up numbers in the minors and he only turns 27 this year. He hit well this spring. His roster spot is perfectly justifiable.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Mar 31, 2017 -> 04:38 PM) LOL I was busy. Picking 7th or 8th would be a failure. More White Sox half measures. QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Mar 31, 2017 -> 05:01 PM) Hah, fantastic analysis! Picking in the top three would mean that a lot of things went wrong for the White Sox. I don't think either of these takes are correct. If the Sox are picking 7th or 8th, either they got incredibly lucky in close games or some young guys played very well, which is a good sign. If they pick in the top 3, it means that the White Sox don't have a lot of talent on the roster and they lost a lot of games, which is also true! Neither situation is a failure.

It is going to take me a while to get used to the 10-day DL.
-
I think the only reason I'd use Burdi as a starter would be to get him innings, similar to Nate Jones. They can do that otherwise anyways, letting him throw 2 or 3 innings at a time.

QUOTE (hi8is @ Mar 29, 2017 -> 02:08 PM) People are having an enjoyable conversation. If you don't want to be apart of it, there are plenty of other threads on the board.

Who is this Carlos Sanchez everyone keeps speaking of?

QUOTE (Baron @ Mar 28, 2017 -> 04:34 PM) If Charlie Morton is your #3 starter your going to have problems. Keuchel, McCullers, McHugh, and Fiers are clearly better, and you could certainly argue that Musgrove is a better pitcher at this point too. He is their 5th or 6th best pitcher, regardless of where he lines up in the rotation.

QUOTE (WhiteSoxLifer @ Mar 27, 2017 -> 11:38 AM) http://www.foxsports.com/mlb/story/yankees...al-notes-032717 It makes little sense for any team to offer the White Sox more for left-hander Jose Quintana than it did a month ago, and even less sense for the Sox to lower their price when the desperation of clubs only will increase at the non-waiver deadline. That said, the Astros remain in excellent position to eventually land Quintana or another starting pitcher — Baseball America ranked their farm system third behind the Braves and Yankees, and that system will remain strong even if the ‘Stros part with major prospects. Perhaps the bigger question is whether the Astros will need one or two starters, given the uncertainty in their rotation. Even when providing a link, please make sure to point out that this is quoted text as opposed to original text, whether using quotation marks or the quote box.

QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Mar 27, 2017 -> 11:52 AM) Who makes it instead of Asche? Only one I could see is Liriano to not risk losing him on waivers. Asche is on a minor league contract, so the Sox have to make room for him on the 40-man. I know Asche has played well, but they can always get him up before the end of April too. If he makes it, it's not that big of a deal either, just that it's easier to control Asche than others who are out of options.
-
There are going to be a lot of players who come and go this year. I imagine there will be steady shuffling between Charlotte and Chicago (and maybe even Birmingham) as well as waiver additions. The best example I have is Casey Blake in 2003. Dude was a 30 year old AAAA player who got at bats with Cleveland and turned into an average to above average starter for 8 years. Maybe it's a little concerning that a 30 year old finally found his power stroke during the PED era, but it's worthy nonetheless. That's why I don't mind the idea of hanging onto a guy like Bourjos or Asche (though he'll begin the year in the minors). If Bourjos is healthy and still up to par (or close to) defensively, and can hit at all, he's arguably a 2-3 WAR player.
