Not a Typical Rebuild According to White Sox
witesoxfan replied to Thomas_Ventura_Roberts's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (WBWSF @ Jan 21, 2017 -> 09:02 AM) They can call it a rebuild, I call it a train wreck. They have nobody in the farm system to help their every day lineup at 3B, Catcher, Dh, and all 3 outfield positions. This so called REBUILD has all the potential of lasting for many years. Uhhh -
Teams have upped their offers in Q derby in the last week

Collect the best players you can. If a team offers you three 60 FV pitchers versus three 55 FV hitters, you don't take the hitters because you need them. The Sox are years from competing right now anyway, so their entire focus should be strictly asset collection. -
Keith Law Farm System and Player rankings

QUOTE (southside hitman @ Jan 20, 2017 -> 08:32 AM) Full list for those who don't have insider... 1. Braves 2. Yankees 3. Padres 4. Pirates 5. Dodgers 6. Brewers 7. Mets 8. Reds 9. Rockies 10. White Sox I'm shocked but also not? He has definitely said Lopez and Fulmer are relievers and Collins can't catch so it makes sense from his perspective. Oh Keith Law feels that two highly talented pitchers the White Sox have are relievers, huh? Well that doesn't sound familiar at all. -
QUOTE (WBWSF @ Jan 19, 2017 -> 12:29 PM) Konerko had a much better career than Ron Santo. The problem is that Konerko will not have the PR that Santo did. The Cubs organization and Cubs tv+radio stations promoted Santo for the HOF for years. Konerko will never have that same type of thing going for him. The only thing that made me happy about Santo getting into the HOF is that he didn't live to see it. No he didn't. Ron Santo was a 5 time gold glove 3B and a great hitter in an era where run suppression was much higher than in Konerko's time. Ron Santo was most definitely worthy of being in the Hall of Fame. I'm a "big" Hall of Fame guy, but Konerko does not belong in the Hall of Fame, unless of course he is just visiting and pays the admission fee.

Not a Typical Rebuild According to White Sox

QUOTE (Con te Giolito @ Jan 18, 2017 -> 06:52 PM) If they trade Quintana and Frazier they could beat Detroit's loss mark. No way. On top of those two, they'd have to trade Lawrie, Jones, Cabrera, Abreu, Rodon, and Gonzalez, and they'd still probably lose only 110 games. -

QUOTE (peavy44 @ Jan 18, 2017 -> 08:51 AM) Don't you see Jose Quintana demanding $150 million from the white sox. No, because he is currently in the midst of a lengthy contract. I think when he gets to free agency, he'll have his agent ask for a very large sum of money. -

QUOTE (peavy44 @ Jan 18, 2017 -> 07:47 AM) No way he sign another cheap deal with the white sox and to be honest white sox need start paying people or no one will wanna play here. Well this is silly. The White Sox guaranteed Chris Sale, Adam Eaton, and Jose Quintana financial security for the rest of their lives, barring super extravagant spending habits, and job satisfaction has much less to do with the amount of money you make and more with how happy you are in your current position. If the White Sox breed an atmosphere in which players will be happy and comfortable, players will be happy playing for them. Also, a lot of these players don't really have a choice where they play anyways, especially for the first 6 years. -
Leubke is the only interesting name I see, and even he isn't super interesting. Was really good in limited innings for the Pirates AAA team last year. Maybe he turns into a decent lefty that the Sox can flip for a lottery ticket at the deadline.

QUOTE (New Era on South Side @ Jan 17, 2017 -> 04:56 PM) Yeah, call me when a deal is done too. It seems like Merkin and Levine are picking angles that nobody has reported and nothing more than that. WSCR reported the same exact s*** today and didn't respond to my text asking for them to elaborate further. I get that it's a Cubs station and that their programming is all set for the day, but we can't just be left hanging with more posturing and more bulls***. Either trade Quintana or say we haven't gotten our demands and be done with it. Eh, you can't be that black and white about it either. Hahn has alluded to the fact that this is not a 1 year or 1 offseason rebuild. There are risks involved in hanging on to him, but those risks are true of every player that you keep or acquire. Keep an open window for negotiation and leave it open, but if you don't get the correct offer, you don't have to deal him. I could easily see a situation where, come June or July, a few of the teams mentioned in this group are hanging around and Quintana's services would be the difference between them making the postseason (or winning their division) and falling short, and at that point, the reward may outweigh the risk involved. The Astros pretty much fit that perfectly. Yeah, their rotation could easily use improvement, but they have enough high upside arms who can contribute at the MLB level that they may feel it best to try those guys out in the rotation to try and fill that hole. If those young guys falter, they are still in a position to make a big offer for Quintana. This situation will work itself out, just have to hope it works itself out in the White Sox favor. -

Let's clear something up: trading Rodon is not idiotic. If someone offered you significantly more value than he is worth, you'd jump on it in a second. The Diamondbacks gave up Dansby Swanson and Endar Inciarte for Shelby Miller. I'd certainly take those two for Rodon right now. Trading him for what the normal market would pay for him right now, that's a little closer to idiotic, but I wouldn't say it would be totally idiotic. -
Update: Luis Robert has been cleared according to Rosenthal

Since it hasn't been addressed in this thread, let me just point out how absolutely ludicrous and overly complicated the international free agency rules are. -
The vanishing role of the mediocre veteran

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jan 14, 2017 -> 02:13 PM) I see some conversation starting elsewhere about the validity of some stats particularly WAR I do not foresee this conversation taking place. -
QUOTE (Al Lopez's Ghost @ Jan 14, 2017 -> 01:29 PM) Salary difference there is substantial. How much does the salary affect the Cubs though?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 13, 2017 -> 08:35 AM) He picked up Wade Phillips to run his Defense today which is about as good of a defensive hire as you can make. The one thing I read that seemed like a convincing argument yesterday was a list of the four youngest coaches in NFL history (name, team, age in years-days, record). Lane Kiffin OAK 32-123 5-15 Raheem Morris TB 33-10 17-31 David Shula CIN 33-101 19-52 Josh McDaniels DEN 33-144 11-17 Yes, when a team hires a new coach the team is already starting off bad, but there's also zero cases of someone at comparable age actually turning a team around. That tells me there could darn well be something more systematic here - either ownership that doesn't trust the kid or players that don't trust the kid or coaches who get theirs too early and need to be chastened once or twice. That said, 0/4 becomes 1/5 and the trend looks a lot different. http://www.profootballhof.com/football-his...hes-modern-era/ It seems like a fairly mixed bag, most turning out poorly, but how many guys coach in the NFL that don't look mediocre to poor by the end of their careers?

QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jan 13, 2017 -> 11:56 AM) Too bad that guy couldn't play defense. I just looked at his offensive numbers and they look solid. Different offensive environment, he was a below average hitter.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 13, 2017 -> 11:41 AM) I feel like Catcher war is often lower due to games played, is that an accurate statement? League wide, yes, it's a fairly accurate statement, which is why having a durable, strong receiver is incredibly valuable. There were only 24 catchers in all of baseball last year who ended up with more than 300 plate appearances. Oh, and on a per game basis, Dioner Navarro was the worst catcher among those who qualified for that, but you already knew that.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 13, 2017 -> 11:22 AM) Who is this Brian Bilek clown? Some punk blogger who lives in his mom's basement.
-
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jan 13, 2017 -> 11:17 AM) If he hits over 20 homers and can stick behind the plate, I take those numbers all day. Yes, that is a 2-4 WAR player.
-
QUOTE (ChiliIrishHammock24 @ Jan 13, 2017 -> 12:58 AM) Yeah, he could very well hit something like .260 with an OBP around .390 and 30 dingers. Moncada might be more of a .295 hitter with an OBP around .370 and 20 dingers. I guess it's kind of preference as to which of those statlines you'd prefer to have. 5 players in baseball put up a .390 or better OBP last year and only 3 of those hit 30 homers. I would guess closer to Brian McCann numbers if he hits his peak, and more mid to late career McCann than early career McCann, .250/.340/.460, something like that.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jan 8, 2017 -> 10:48 AM) Yeah, that's probably a good call. And beyond our organization's weakness with development, Micker has lost a ton of time due to injuries. Regardless, it still makes me sick seeing those other two names shoot up the rankings while Adalfo's prospect status sours. It sucks, but at the same time, he's still young enough that a big season will shoot him up prospect rankings almost immediately. He was 19 in A ball this year, and even though he was not good, it still says something that they were comfortable enough to let him do that.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jan 8, 2017 -> 10:32 AM) Pretty crazy the Cubs were able to sign both Jimenez & Torres in the same class. They were the #1 & #3 ranked prospects according MLB.com. The #2 was none other than Micker Adolfo. Funny that the one time we were able to land a big fish in Latin America it turns out to be the wrong guy. Is it the wrong guy or an indictment on the White Sox ability to develop young hitters?

QUOTE (Con te Giolito @ Jan 8, 2017 -> 09:22 AM) Avi spent a lot of time roping liners throughout the minors while young for his level almost every step of the way. Take a look at his minor league stats they are quite impressive, this dude doesn't even come close to Avi's minor league production. But that description still pretty much fits Avisail Garcia to a tee.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 7, 2017 -> 06:21 PM) Here's what appeared to me to be an excellent read on Willy Garcia, what the Pirates tried to do with him at various steps, what he was able to do, what his weaknesses were, and why he didn't wind up on their roster in 2016. Are you sure that article wasn't about Avisail Garcia?
