Yeah, yeah, contracts, shmontracts. People are asking for the firing of Ventura because of a hard spell, some idiot is even suggesting that the Sox fire Don Cooper, the long time acclaimed pitching coach. Why not fire the guy who is at fault? This mothertrucker was supposed to hit. That's why the White Sox brought him in. All he's done is regress to a replacement level player who occasionally hits a bomb now and then. "Oh but his approach" what the f*** does that mean? He hasn't done anything particularly meaningful this season. He's at -0.4 WAR for the year, which means that the Sox could have likely run Travis Ishikawa or Andy Wilkins at 1B and been just fine. Hell, Frank Thomas or Fred McGriff might do the job still too. I heard Barry Bonds won a home run competition amongst his players in Marlins camp, he'd likely add more too. Better yet, let's bring back the legend, Chris Widger, to man 1B for us. I'm sure catching took a toll on his body, but if he could play 1B as opposed to catcher, he'd hit .330 with 30 dingers. --- Now do we understand how irrational it is to say "fire this guy" or "this guy sucks" as a blanket statement? Do you think Robin Ventura planned on his best hitter having the worst season of his career? Do you think he went to his relievers and said "hey, allow the first 3 guys to get on, get an out, let a couple score, so we lose a close 1 run game so I don't look as bad and can blame it on bad luck?" This is f***ing baseball. Weird s*** happens all the time. There are like 100 more games to go and no one in the Central, at this point, wants to win it. Let it play out. The Sox are actually in it and have a decent team. Maybe they'll be the lucky team to lose the Giants in the World Series this year (after the Giants defeat the Cubs after the Cubs win 113 games in the regular season).

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 8, 2016 -> 12:38 AM) If we DFA'ed Matt Albers, Dan Jennings, Kahnle, Carroll, Webb, Beck, Zach Duke and Purke tomorrow, how many potential suitors would be willing to give up anything of significance for those guys? Putnam's been doing quite well recently, and I'm not even sure that we'd get much back for him. Maybe some team's 24th or 25th bench player? To have any real value, you've got to have dominant stuff, two pitches you can throw for strikes even when behind in the count, be an effective lefty against LHBers OR have something very unique or distinctive about your style or repertoire. In reality, Cooper did a great job doing what he could to get something useful out of all those guys...Latos and Albers included. Putnam and Carroll and Petricka. All of these guys basically came off the scrap heap or were failed starters in the case of Petricka. If you average out their first month (32 games) and their last 26, you get an average MLB bullpen. Why everyone's expecting it to compete with the Yankees or KC is beyond me, they just don't have the talent to strike out tons of hitters, other than Jones and Robertson. . Are you f***ing high? Albers and Jennings would be claimed in a second, Kahnle's thrown like 6 innings, Carroll is apparently a White Sox lifer, Daniel Webb has sucked f***ing dong, Zach Duke is still due like $8 mill (and would be scooped off waivers IMMEDIATELY) and Matt Purke is a AAAA player who has had like one good night of pitching in his life. I don't even get what you're trying to say here. Are you defending Cooper despite the fact that the pitching staff has been dogs*** for the past 4 years, despite the club spending money on pitchers?

QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Jun 8, 2016 -> 12:30 AM) Dude where have you been? Work. At my most active, I was behind a computer desk. At my least active (now), I am running my ass off 90% of the time, smoking cigarettes 5% of the time, taking a poop 2% of the time, and standing around doing nothing 2% of the time. That gives me like 1%, and I just like to at least catch up with the sporting world and the HOT TAKES that are provided on Deadspin (did you guys know that Muhammad Ali was greater than Jesus and Moses and Allah COMBINED? sorry, religious comment, please move 4th place thread to Filibuster). I still follow FanGraphs too and have a communication with Eminor3rd, as he is the genius who sparked the Sabermetrics Day for the Staten Island Yankees. [shameless plug: if you are able to attend that, you will make him very happy, and he is very awesome. June 19th, Staten Island Yankees. I am not able to attend due to complications at work and also f***ing girlfriend cant get it off and she would kill me (not literally, relax) if I went to NYC without her. I legitimately did try to get there] Also, video games. NHL is way cooler than I thought, plus MLB and still playing Fallout and Witcher 3, plus following the White Sox who are probably still an 85 win team. I've seen this team do crazy things, but the talent is there to win 85 games, and there's a ton of room for improvement (like 3-4 wins). With the right moves, I could see this team winning 92 games, but you'd be gutting the farm system at that point. For the past 4 years, the Sox have been in the worst position among any team in the league, yet they do what they can do make themselves relevant, and they're doing it again this year. It's not a philosophy I endorse, but it's not one that I would dissuade from either.

What are these aytch dee tee vees all about? I've been using my turn knob 13 channel Cadillac for 15 years and people are telling me I'm missing out. I'm not willing to spend more than $80 on a new tee vee. Can you guy help?

did you guys know that if you drink 10 beers at a Twins game against the Tigers, the staff doesn't even care because they charge $8 a beer and oh my god did Justin Upton hit the f*** out of that ball Sorry, that was a post in waiting. I think Park hit one further that game, but I was in the middle of a brown-out and the Twins were obviously dead, but holy s*** did Justin Upton hit the s*** out of that ball. And then the next day, I fully understood the magnitude of a truly hungover drive, because a drive that normally takes 6 hours took me 8+. It was not fun.

QUOTE (hi8is @ Jun 8, 2016 -> 12:25 AM) I don't know why - but that actually made me laugh. Kudos. It's actually better if you envision Rick Hahn chasing Jay Bruce while wearing a full suit and tie and running like a middle-aged white guy.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 7, 2016 -> 11:58 PM) It's almost impossible to go 6-19 unless you truly have a pathetic ballclub. It's KW's fault as much as Robin obviously. Actually, it's nowhere near impossible to go 6-19. Both the Astros ('05) and Twins ('06) were 15+ games UNDER .500 and still managed to either proceed to the World Series or win the division in what was then a stacked division. If this team is who we think it is, and adding James Shields helps a bunch (and by a bunch, I mean by one win, as long as it is Latos who goes, because he should be serving batting practice with that flat-ass fastball, not Matt Albergers), then they'll be OK. If the bullpen continues to truly implode, then fire Don Cooper. He's in charge of the pitching staff, isn't he? At what point do you hold those people who fail at their jobs accountable? Tommy LaSorda is one of the greatest managers of all time, but I don't want that guy running this team. Maybe it's time for a change in pitching coaches. Seriously, what has Don Cooper done for me lately? #HOTTAKE

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 8, 2016 -> 12:08 AM) He's been humbled, but more than that, Humber-ed. As good as he was for a month, he's worse than that by 10 times now. He should throw BP for us. It might help our hitters get their acts together. Man, he's bad. #HOTTAKE -
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 8, 2016 -> 08:59 AM) If teams didn't have to give Olt a 40 man spot and potentially remove someone from their roster, there is no question he would have been claimed. If and when the Sox release him, he will have no problem finding a minor league contract with another team. I do agree, they won't get anything of substance for him, but I am sure a team wouldn't mind him stashed away in AAA just in case he figures something out. He can hit the ball a mile. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 8, 2016 -> 09:08 AM) Put him on a AAA roster, sure. Pay something to get him? No way. I'm pretty sure you guys completely agree on Mike Olt. I do too. Hitting is not easy. Some guys with all the tools figure it out later, some never do. The thing the "rebuilding" teams do is to stock up on these sorts of talents because they can change a franchise. The middle of the Blue Jays order is filled with those guys (Donaldson got his start in Oakland, but the point remains). I think finding a spot for Olt is more important than finding a spot for Travis f'ing Ishikawa.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 9, 2016 -> 11:53 AM) Danks is in the rotation. He might not finish there, but he will start there. Unless Latos is hurt or flops hard core, he will be the 5th starter. Well, he starts there. As far as I am concerned though, Danks has the shortest leash among any starting candidates. You give him a chance to do something, but if it's not working after 5-6 starts (if that), you move on. Whether it's DFA or relegation to the bullpen, it's already a sunk cost. There's no need to sink that ship even further. Don't stick with something that is going to kill you and hurt your chances at a playoff birth.

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Feb 12, 2016 -> 01:28 AM) .280 hitter....low OBP.....above average defense....tons of SB... You are basically talking about 2014 Jose Reyes or 2005 Jimmy Rollins. Had a 3.5 and 3.9 WAR season respectively... If Tim Anderson is a 3+ SS for us, we are going to be in pretty great shape. There were only 4 of those guys in baseball last season. There were twice that amount. http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=...=&players=0

QUOTE (asindc @ Dec 10, 2015 -> 08:59 AM) Which years were those? 2006 through 2008, during ages 27-29. And that was merely the first example drunk me thought of.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Dec 10, 2015 -> 12:25 AM) This is pretty much Lawrie's last chance. He's been a huge bust for a No. 1 pick and obviously the A's think he's no good if they wanted to dump him. Hopefully he'll be humble in this, his last real chance, to make it big. His stats, in fact, were lousy with the A's. We shall see. I am a little surprised a lot of you are happy with the trade. At least he's used to AL pitching, but I see him as a fairly lousy hitter. Greg, do you even baseball, bro? QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Dec 10, 2015 -> 02:07 AM) Welp. Didn't want the player, but can't be mad at the price. We gave up nothing of significance, and no one interesting that I would have wanted to see pan out. Seeing the price, I'm ok with this. Only makes us slightly better, but at least it was at no real cost at all. This, on the other hand, surprises me a great deal. And while I disagree with the latter - as was pointed out earlier, the Sox put up like a -2.2 last year while Lawrie put up 0.6, which on its own is nearly a 3 win difference, but if he gets back to being a 2 WAR player, that's 4 wins - I did not expect this high of a road from you.
-
QUOTE (whtsoxfan @ Dec 9, 2015 -> 10:31 PM) Since this thread is about Lawrie in the first place who's #17 on the list? Oh boy. Adrian Beltre, considered to be one of the best defensive third basemen of our time, sandwiched a -1.1 UZR season with 18.5 and 11.7 seasons. Guys have off years with the glove and the bat. Lawrie is a talented defender. This was a good trade. Since it was with the A's, I figured they'd give up someone I hated, but this was a very good deal.

I hope there is no one upset about this move. There is nothing to be upset without about this move.

White Sox decline to tender Tyler Flowers and Jacob Turner

QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Dec 3, 2015 -> 09:52 AM) That's why you look at career averages and batted ball profiles. If a guy is way off his career average and his LD% and such are unchanged, then you know he's likely due for a positive/negative regression. If a guy isn't particularly fast and hits a lot of fly balls (which have a league-wide BABIP of .207) and still has a high BABIP, then something is off there. Alexei is a good example here, his LD% in 2015 was higher than his career average (21.4% vs. 19.3%), and his FB% was lower than his career average, yet his BABIP was almost 30 points below his career average. Some of this data and the anomalies may also be explained by exit velocity off the bat. A line drive is a line drive whether it's going 75 MPH or 115 MPH. If he wasn't hitting the ball as hard, that would explain some regression in his BABIP. Some of those numbers have become available to the public, but I don't think all of them are yet. You are correct that, on the surface, it appears that it was a bit unlucky for Ramirez to have the season he had given the circumstances. -

QUOTE (oldsox @ Nov 29, 2015 -> 07:12 AM) Because he can't get big league hitters out. False. Daniel Webb has recorded 109 innings in his major league career, meaning he has recorded 327 outs with big league hitters at the plate. -

QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Nov 24, 2015 -> 12:52 PM) It goes both ways. Yes, the Dodgers have all the money in the world - but they also have several spare/excess pieces that the Sox could use (see my previous post). They may prefer to just go out and sign David Price, or they may prefer to give up a package of players to acquire Jose Quintana and his $8.5M AAV over the next four seasons and LaRoche's $13M in 2016. Saves them a ton of doe to spend elsewhere. Just look at what they did last season...Signed Hector Olivera, ate $28M and traded him; ate the tens of millions owed to Matt Latos, Mike Morse and Bronson Arroyo (all of which had zero and negative trade value). Not saying the Dodgers have interest in LaRoche, but they've done much crazier things with their $. If they really want Q so they can spend their money elsewhere, it wouldn't be all that shocking. The Dodgers made those moves to eat salary to pick up surplus value elsewhere. Their surplus value in this instance would be giving up very little to acquire Jose Quintana by also eating Adam LaRoche's contract. Do you think it is in the White Sox best interest to negate the possible surplus value they can receive in Jose Quintana by packaging $15 mill in the deadweight contract of Adam LaRoche with him? Adam LaRoche is not going to kill the White Sox financially this year, they may able to acquire at least someone for him at the deadline, and he's clean of their hands at the end of 2016 regardless. To your last point, you are correct that the Dodgers have done crazier things with their money. The White Sox have not. That is a Marlins' sort of move. -

QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Nov 19, 2015 -> 04:05 PM) I wanted to post this in the offseason plan thread, but it got closed for some reason, so I'll post it here instead. Here is my plan for the offseason. • Trade Avisail Garcia for Billy Hamilton • Trade Jose Quintana and Adam LaRoche for Yasiel Puig, Scott Van Slyke, and Austin Barnes • Trade Chris Beck and Tyler Danish for Jurickson Profar • Sign David Freese to a 3 year/$30 million deal • Sign Doug Fister to a 1 year/$5 million deal QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Nov 19, 2015 -> 08:04 PM) Were my proposals bad? I tried to keep it somewhat realistic. Yes. -Billy Hamilton, in a down year, put up 1.9 WAR. He is never going to be much of a hitter, but he is a super stud defensively and an incredible baserunner. Garcia is an average hitter with no other discernible assets. The Reds would not make that trade. -The Dodgers have all the money in the world. Why waste your player assets for a 3-4 WAR pitcher when you can just spend $200 million on a 4-5 WAR pitcher? Nevermind that they have no use whatsoever for Adam LaRoche, who has negative value right now. -I won't say anything about Chris Beck and Tyler Danish for Jurickson Profar, but it's generally not a common practice to trade a prospect at his lowest unless you have absolutely no room for him on the 40-man roster and/or the 25-man roster, depending upon options. -David Freese will be 33 years old next year. Signing a guy to a 3 year deal for his ages 33, 34, and 35 seasons is not typically wise practice, as we've seen from the Sox in the past 5-8 years or so. I won't say I'm completely opposed to the Sox bringing in a 3B or perhaps even Freese himself, but it's something I think they should shy away from. -If Fister ends up taking a 1 year deal worth $5 million, I'd probably eat a keyboard or something. Beyond that, I'm not sure he's the best fit for a team whose defense is pretty terrible. -
Jeff Samardjiza signs with SF Giants, 5/90.
