QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Aug 6, 2012 -> 11:09 AM) wite, is there any inside info that you are referring to about the "that you will hear about" comment? Not at all. You just won't hear about players being claimed on waivers because it's generally pretty private unless it is a very high profile name. Even then it takes some speculation - with both Rios and Manny, it was fairly obvious the Sox have claimed them both, but there was never any confirmation for either one of them until the other team just let him go (Rios) or trade negotiations stalled and the original team found it worthwhile enough just to let him go (Manny). Nobody knew that Danny Valencia, Wil Nieves, or Jose Mijares had been claimed on waivers (and the latter's a pretty damn good reliever), but they've all been claimed/traded and went through waivers pretty easily. If someone is released, then it's an actual transaction made by the organization and you are required to notify MLB of it. If there isn't a press release notifying the public of the move, it will be notated somewhere and any sports site will make note of the transaction. That's the difference.

QUOTE (GO CHI SOX! @ Aug 5, 2012 -> 04:06 PM) Fontenot was released today according to the MLB transaction website. That you will hear about. QUOTE (EvilJester99 @ Aug 5, 2012 -> 05:22 PM) The Royals have designated Yuniesky Betancourt for assignment, according to Bob Dutton of The Kansas City Star (via Twitter) any interest?? Good lord no.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 5, 2012 -> 04:52 PM) f*** you Indians. You're completely worthless. What a f***ing joke of an organization.

I've been there for 2 games - I've made note several times of the last game I attended there because it was the worst baseball experience I've ever, ever had - but it's a great stadium and a great place to watch a ball game. I had standing room seats, which sound rough, except that you can pick any number of places around the park to watch the game. Going again in September and looking forward to actually sitting this time and not having to watch the catastrophe that was Bobby Jenks.
-
I have my doubts regarding the reporting of Fontenot being a guy you hear about with regards to him being claimed or making it through waivers.

QUOTE (knightni @ Aug 4, 2012 -> 12:47 AM) Um... yep. That may have been what Kyle was going with, but the fact of the matter is, Scott Podsednik was 44 of 53 in stolen base attempts in the first half of 2005, and a horrendous 15 of 29 in the second half, and it was entirely due to a strained groin. The entire value of a player like Scott Podsednik is that he can get on base and steal bases, and with a groin that has shown to hamper him for half a season (or more - he was 40 of 59 in 2006), he's absolutely not worth it. If there were a chance in hell that he could play a slick shortstop in his spare time, then perhaps this would be worth consideration. Otherwise, Willie Harris or Chris Widger make more sense.

It's very hard not to like Francisco Liriano, especially at the price at which it's possible he could be resigned. However, with the somewhat girth of (relatively mediocre) starting pitching that the White Sox have accumulated in the last few years, it's hard to assume or have any idea as to what the rotation is going to look like going into next season. And, even though the Royals did it with 4 terrible left handed starting pitchers in 2004 (Darrell May, Brian Anderson, Jimmy Gobble, and Jeremy Affeldt), it's generally not a good idea to have 4 left handed starting ptichers. So, if you have Sale, Quintana, and Liriano in the rotation, you are assuming either that you are going to go with a 6 man rotation or that you assume Danks simply won't be back next year. Now, considering Danks underwent this shoulder surgery in August, it doesn't rule out the possibility of him coming back mid-year. If that's the case, I actually want him as a bullpen arm down the stretch. It's not something he's ever done before, but that will build up the strength in his shoulder relatively quickly and will put him at a spot come the offseason of 13-14 where he can move back into the rotation, and the Sox can then make a decision on Sale/Quintana/Liriano, if one of them doesn't crap the bed before that (which, knowing the inexperience of the middle and the inconsistency of the latter, is likely to happen anyways). All we can do is hope that it all comes after the Sox win a World Series. They're hanging blow-for-blow with what I believe to be the best team in the league right now.

QUOTE (Wagz @ Aug 3, 2012 -> 10:26 AM) I think i would take out Starters over theirs even though they have Weaver who should win the cy young this year. But we have 6 quality starters in Q Floyd Danks(when healthy) Liriano Peavy and Sale oh and Phillip Humber is not a bad spot starter guy with a Perfect game on his Resume. I think it would be interesting to compare our 5 starters to theirs at a complete whole. I think their bullpen may be a little better and I would say our pitching is way deeper than texas for sure. Feliz is hurt just like Danksy but I think we are better than them anyways even with the DUMPster in their starting rotation. (Not that Dempster is bad this year but I just like the nickname) There isn't a chance in hell I'm taking the White Sox rotation over the Angels rotation.

QUOTE (hammerhead johnson @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 09:12 PM) He damn well better be resourceful. Chris Getz is the second best hitter that he's drafted since 2001, and most of the posters on this board have better plate discipline than Alexei Ramirez or Dayan Viciedo. I guess it depends upon whether you're actually talking about hitting or value from an offensive player. If we're talking strictly hitting and using OPS as the base guideline, the best hitter he's drafted since 2001 (if we're including 2001) is Chris Young with a career OPS of .756. Then you have others of note, including Josh Fields, Ryan Sweeney, Jeremy Reed, and Gordon Beckham. Merely an argument of semantics. The Sox have not drafted nor developed hitters very well for a long time.

QUOTE (knightni @ Jul 24, 2012 -> 04:15 PM) Harper has more power potential (not a fan of his swing, though) but Trout is quicker and more polished. Are you kidding? I absolutely ADORE his swing. So much power, speed, and control behind it. He might hit 40 homers next year.

QUOTE (qwerty @ Jul 24, 2012 -> 01:01 AM) http://www.curlybacon.com/index.php?code=8...88c6e571c725ecc That's TTO%, which is similar, but I'm looking for total, which is also indicative of full playing time. Not sure how I forgot McGwire though, 387 in 1998. Dunn is still on pace to beat it. That's still the only one I've found that's higher, though I'm not in the mood to do math. A few were close - Howard was at like 348, Cust's 2008 was like 345, so there have been a few more, but they've all been in the last 15 years when teams and players stopped giving a s*** about strikeouts.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jul 23, 2012 -> 11:01 PM) Current MLB ranks: '3 true outcome' much? Oh, Adam you're so Dunny right now it's unreal. Love ya, big man. I haven't done a lot of research, but I have to believe he already has the record for 3 true outcome totals in a season at 349 set in 2004 (46 homers, 108 BB, 195 K). He's also 2nd on that list with 346 (40 HR, 112 BB, 194 K). I have Thome in 3rd with 345 in 2001 (49 HR, 111 BB, 185 K), Bonds in 4th at 343 (73 HR, 177 BB, 93 K). Thome also has a 340 in 2003 (47 HR, 111 BB, 182 K). Without rounding up, using per game averages, and 155 games, Dunn is on pace for 403 3 true outcome plate appearances (47 HR, 122 BB, 234 K).

Totally reputable source also says the Royals should trade Billy Butler to the Dodgers.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 19, 2012 -> 07:30 PM) Yup. I dont think Oz lasts 3 years there with the money they poured in and what they are getting out. So far all he's been known for is having a big mouth and underachieving players. I'd give it an outside shot that he's gone after this season, let alone 3 years.

If they can stretch Strasburg into the postseason, they'll be the prohibitive favorites to win the World Series. That pitching staff is absurdly good.

VIVA LA CHAVEZ! VIVA LA CASTRO! I am now done talking about that idiot in this forum. I like to talk about managers that know what they're doing, prepare for each game, and keep players loose and happy. I enjoy watching my team when they're run by managers like that.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 18, 2012 -> 04:37 PM) How could I be wrong? Seriously. Last time I looked Rios is the guy with the glove in his hand and bat in his hand. Ozzie Guillen is to blame for his s***tiness prior to this year? Telling me to shut up is not very nice. There are now NATIONAL pundits as well as the reasonable and rational people on here telling you and pointing out all the obvious signs of why the White Sox are winning this year. It's not mere coincidence, it has everything, and I mean E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G to do with the change in clubhouse management. If Ozzie Guillen were still the White Sox manager, the Sox would be in last place - I guarantee it.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 18, 2012 -> 04:19 PM) Alex Rios should not be praised for finally earning his money. Give me a break. It's on him for being a piece of crap last year and the other years he sucked. Kudos to him for this year, though. Must be nice to earn the kind of money Rios earns. Critics can say a new manager brought it out of him. That pisses me off. It's ALL ON THE MILLIONAIRE RIOS, not his f***ing coaches. Greg, you're wrong, move on, give it up, and shut up

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 13, 2012 -> 04:03 PM) Chris Getz is the only one that comes close as a comparison that I can think of... You're right, in a way. When's the last time that someone like Steve Nash, Jeremy Lin or John Stockton was compared to black guards? If you go back to the MLB draft website, 90% of the comparisons are with players of similar ethnic groups. Look at Viciedo. How many white players have we been comparing him to in all the discussions of him since he was acquired after 2008? I can't think of many, can anyone? I guess Brian Anderson was compared to Torii Hunter, but it was more the offensive numbers that KW projected for him...and perhaps the defensive side, but Anderson was nowhere as great as Hunter in his prime defensively (2000-2004) for the Twins. How many black people have you compared Viciedo to? The only people he's really been compared to have been Dominican...the primary one has been Vlad and I did Adrian Beltre. -

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jul 17, 2012 -> 02:47 AM) I'm interested to hear your best-case-scenario comp Considering he's 16 and I've never seen him play, you don't make a best case scenario at all. How about Barry Bonds? There's my best case scenario comparison. Am I wrong? OF COURSE NOT! Is it stupid? YOU BET YOUR ASS IT IS! -
QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jul 11, 2012 -> 03:18 PM) OK, since you're too f***ing lazy to look it up yourself: Bears punt returns: 2009: 39 returns, 7 fair catches 2010: 33 returns, 10 fair catches 2011: 30 returns, 16 fair catches Is that enough stat for you? How much of that is kicking the ball shorter so that they don't outkick their punt coverage, which gives Hester and the blockers more time to set for a return? And beyond that, if they only had 14 real returns, and Hester returned 2 of those 14 for touchdowns, I'd say his value has been fine. Two stat to look at, if anyone can find them, are net punt average against the Bears and average starting position after a punt. You could also look at touchbacks against on punts and even gross punting average against the Bears. Those will begin to paint a better picture as opposed to returns vs fair catch.

QUOTE (flavum @ Jul 11, 2012 -> 02:18 PM) Ventura Era. We don't talk like that anymore. His ERA is 5.22 on the year, and in his most recent 14 starts, he's allowed a .298/.346/.495/.841 to go along with a 6.14 ERA.

FutureSox Mid-season 2012 Top Prospects List
witesoxfan replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in FutureSox Board
Is Carlos Sanchez going to have the glove to stick at 2B? I want to be excited about the kid because a 20 year old with those kinds of peripherals - ISO aside - looks like he could be a very valuable member of the lineup, depending on how he fills out. Just based on his height/weight, he sounds a lot like Alexi Casilla. Alexi Casilla - age 21 - A+ - .331/.390/.406/.796 in 359 PAs, with a K% of 10% and a BB% of 8.4%, and much better speed numbers (12 2B, 6 3B, 0 HR, 31/37 in SB). It's eery how similar those seasons really are. So, if Sanchez has the bat to stick at 2B, he could be a nice player. It also depends on how he fills out, because if he can get stronger, a few of those singles can turn into doubles. He is probably the one player in the Sox system I'm the most interested in going forward.
