  1. QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Jul 5, 2012 -> 11:39 PM) Boy are the Twins bad. How fast they fell. The other night I assumed they were going to hammer Detroit (after a nice lead), I watched the game only to see that was short lived. That has to be a frustrated city of fans. What are they going to wait for? Football season? No light at the end of that tunnel. You apparently have no idea how naive Minnesota fans are.
  2. QUOTE (Swingandalongonetoleft @ Jul 6, 2012 -> 12:23 AM) That comparison has actually crossed my mind as well. Should he remain in baseball, my shot in the dark gut feeling has Miami presenting a low risk/league minimum offer just because. I think Jenks' problem in the first place was being around Ozzie. His kids insult and publicize quite a few things that Jenks told Ozzie in confidence, so that will mess with his psyche. On top of that, Jenks is a recovering/relapsed alcoholic and Ozzie has been pretty adamant this year about how he drinks, win or lose. If that was his only offer in the entire major leagues to pitch, and I were his agent, I would suggest he go play in Japan or an independent league.
  3. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jul 5, 2012 -> 06:25 PM) It was defensive second baseman and alot of scouts backed him on it. He was all world there. Probably would of posted the highest UZR ever (and multiple GGs) if he could actually hit. He can hit a little, you just have to take the good with the bad. He's a .220 hitter who won't walk much but will hit you 15-20 home runs. If you can handle that at 2B, then he's perfect.
  4. QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 5, 2012 -> 11:31 PM) Don't forget what Daniel Hudson's up to right about now To be fair, Holmberg has been quite good overall this year. He's hit a rough patch at AA but he's 20 years old. I think he's forgiven.
  5. I took Chris Sale because f*** it, it's my birfday
  6. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 27, 2012 -> 12:43 AM) What do you want the manager to do? He was putting the team's CLOSER out there. Just like Ozzie is putting Heath Bell out there. You have to play the guys on the roster. Bobby had a nice career. At that point in time, Jenks had been awful all year and didn't have a 3 year, $27 million contract. He would have been pitching mopup for the past month until he got his s*** straightened out, and then when he never did, he would have been traded or released. JJ Putz would have been my closer.
  7. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jun 27, 2012 -> 01:33 AM) That was the day that Ozzie's tenure was over, Bobby's tenure was over, Dunn's started. That was one of the worst losses I've ever seen. And I wasn't there. It was actually the beginning of the end of my relationship with my girlfriend too. They lost and I threw a plastic cup that I was going to bring back for my dad on the ground and I had a mini-meltdown. She had no idea how I could take it that seriously. "It's just a game, seriously." It was so much more to me though. She was right though. I'm actually a better fan because of that game. I don't freak out about tough losses like that, and I don't get overly excited about wins. I'd go crazy if they won the World Series, and I probably would do that any time they won it, but I'd stay pretty calm if they lost in that scenario. It's just a game, they'll all be back next year.
  8. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jul 4, 2012 -> 10:45 PM) Guys, Marlins won today in extras. I think it's because of the loose clubhouse that Hanley keeps. All that time playing Dominoes has really paid off.
  9. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 4, 2012 -> 07:38 PM) I said they are "also responsible." So he's responsible for 2007, 2009, 2010, and 2011 then too?
  10. I still have the only real bold prediction.
  11. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jun 30, 2012 -> 05:25 PM) That's just not gonna look right It doesn't look right
  12. The guy had one of the worst seasons ever last year, so to see him bounce back like this really is a feel good story, and I'm sure the players feel he deserves a shot in the All-Star game. I have no problem with it.
  13. QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Jul 1, 2012 -> 01:11 AM) In an era where OPS reigns supreme in evaluating offensive contributions, he just doesn't hit enough jacks. 2nd in the AL in homers and OPS
  14. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jun 29, 2012 -> 09:59 PM) I've gotta admit, this soxfan49 guy is rather impressive. Maybe I should take him under my wing? Make him exciting and likeable like I did quinarvy. Did you ever consider that he has the number 49 in his name because he might be 49 years old? Or that he was born in 1949? It might be hard to take him under your wing. Besides, I already took him under my wing, and then he told me to put it away.
  15. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 30, 2012 -> 05:07 PM) Thome traded to Orioles That's just not gonna look right
  16. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jun 29, 2012 -> 12:14 PM) I dont understand what you are saying here, are you saying he's NOT an every other year player? Because if you look at his stats its support by every year but one. Its extremely consistent. Because Im lazy and tired lets just use BA .286 .262 .302 .297 (the one year he didnt go back down) .291 .247 .284 .227 .305 That's precisely what I'm saying, and using average is very lazy when you could have just used OPS to debunk your own argument. .720 .703 .865 .852 .798 .691 .791 .613 .835 That looks like 2 very mediocre years to start the career (regardless of average and the fact that he was developing as a hitter), 3 good years in a row, and then he's gone back and forth the last 4. Maybe 4 out of 9 is a trend for you, but I don't consider it to be.
  17. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 28, 2012 -> 03:23 PM) Paul hoynes ‏@hoynsie #Indians, who have lost five straight, have team meeting called for 430. Don't you think the cardboard cutout of Rachel Phelps would get old after a while?
  18. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 28, 2012 -> 08:37 AM) Adding a #2-#3 starter midseason isn't a good thing? Never said it wasn't. Just said that he's not going to be an ace, and that his expectations for him should be tempered.
  19. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jun 28, 2012 -> 02:45 PM) It wasnt Ozzie or Robin or his approach or stance or anything. He's an every other year player. Its consistent. That is said around here quite a bit and I just don't buy it. He was a great, great player from 2006-08 - the Jays didn't give him that huge contact based on one season. He was having a bit of a down year in 2009 when the Sox claimed him, and then everything went south when he got to the Sox for whatever reason. He was good in 2010, and then he looked absolutely horrendous last year and because his swing was so tight, choppy, and mechanical. Not only is he standing straighter this year, but he looks smoother at the plate too. It really isn't a coincidence that when Rios plays well, the Sox play well. There have been a ton of other contributors this season as well, but he's as valuable, if not moreso, than anybody on the team when he's playing well.
  20. QUOTE (Knackattack @ Jun 28, 2012 -> 09:16 PM) I don't think anybody like the Axelrod match up lol. But he did the best thing he will ever do in his career tonight haha. I don't think so, he'll do more in the majors than just this. He's not an incredibly gifted pitcher, but he's a very smart pitcher who mixes his speeds well. I'm not sure he has a future in the AL, but he definitely has the look of a guy who can carve out a niche in a rotation in the NL. The one thing I'd really like to see from him is to further develop a fastball that moves. If he can add not only the standard Cooper Cutter, but a 2 seamer that runs a little away from lefties, he could be a very dangerous pitcher. I really liked his changeup. QUOTE (G&T @ Jun 28, 2012 -> 09:33 PM) Looked like a pretty wide strike zone being called. That plays well for Axelrod and they took advantage. That works for me. QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Jun 28, 2012 -> 10:03 PM) Really? Gamecast made it look like half the balls were actually strikes. Either way, it worked out for our Arod! It was an inconsistent strike zone all night. In Swisher's last AB, the 3-0 pitch looked to be about 6 inches outside, and I seem to recall Pierzynski almost having to lunge for it, and Santiago somehow got the call and then retired Swisher. --- During Viciedo's AB, Hawk mentioned the gap in left center (and I don't understand why they were shifted that way anyways, at that point in the game, just play no doubles straight defense, not that it mattered) and said that if Viciedo hit it there, the game would be tied. I said "just hit it over the fence and then you don't have to worry about it." Next pitch and I fist-pumped.
  21. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Jun 27, 2012 -> 10:31 PM) Their starting pitching is really falling apart, and Oswalt in that park isn't screaming ace either. Roy Oswalt vs AL, regular season, career 31 GS, 206 IP, 3.63 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, .281/.326/.440/.765, 2.27 BB/9 7,3 K/9, 0.87 HR/9 Roy Oswalt, regular season, career totals 341 G (327 GS), 2160.2 IP, 3.21 ERA, 1.195 WHIP, .254/.301/.386/.687, 2.01 BB/9, 7.4 K/9, 0.76 HR/9 And, if you wanted to do a little bit of arithmetic, you could quickly deduce how much more of his success has come from pitching in the NL compared to the AL. He's going to be, at the very, very best, a #2 for them, and more likely a #3-4 guy who eats inning and gives a pretty consistent performance. Expecting him to keep his ERA below 3.75 at this point is asking too much, and in that park, below 4 will be a minor miracle.
  22. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 27, 2012 -> 09:44 PM) Last year's team probably would have won one. Had the series been after the all star break last year's team woulda definitely got swept. Not an indictment on the manager at all, no-sir-ee.
  23. Guess I'm the only one kind of bummed by this. With apparent attitude issues aside (as briefly mentioned above), Ohman is one of the few guys on the roster I can say that Ventura has perfectly mishandled. Perhaps part of it is the fact that Ventura does not like Ohman and that Ohman is not well liked in the clubhouse, so then it's a totem pole game, but Ohman is and has been great against lefties this year (.186/.250/.281/.513) and for the duration of his career (.210/.294/.308/.571). He can't get righties out. This has been the book on him for a while. Yet Ventura continued to use him in an inning eating and long relief role, which will simply lead opposing managers to just take all of their mediocre lefties out of the lineup in place of inferior righties who can and will hit Ohman to death. At this point, the Sox need a guy who can eat innings, regardless of handedness. Leesman seems like a perfectly legitimate candidate at this point in time. I will name Santos Rodriguez as a wildcard, for shiz and gigz
  24. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 26, 2012 -> 11:25 PM) Bobby deserves a ton of credit for making it as far as he did. I really have nothing but good memories of him. Because you weren't at that game in Minnesota. That was undoubtedly the worst feeling I've ever had as a Sox fan. Nothing compares. The first thing I think of with Bobby Jenks is 2005, and that was a hell of a ride. Shortly thereafter it's the downfall and how Ozzie kept throwing him out there even though he pretty obviously had nothing left.
  25. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jun 26, 2012 -> 02:21 PM) I'm not talking about pain. He should run the damned ball out. Instead of sulking about it like a spoiled little kid. If we're going to criticize others for doing it, then PK shouldn't be above the criticism either. But of course, you say it and you're going to take s***. I think there is some sort of respect/hierarchy that comes from this. It is annoying that he does it as much as he does, but I'd be much more upset as a fan (which generally doesn't mean a lot, though I think it's a shared opinion of most people in power) if it were a rookie doing it, not a guy who has been an MVP candidate, has multiple 40 homer seasons and 400+ career home runs. If it's a pitch that he legitimately missed and he should have crushed it, then yeah, he gets to do it then, but there are some pitches where the pitcher just made a great pitch and he got himself out and he does it, which is actually pretty disrespectful to the pitcher. And as a hitter, you know.
