QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 20, 2009 -> 06:16 PM) That doesn't fix their offense/injuries this year, and they'd have Halladay for only 1 more season, and they'd have lost anyone and everyone in their organization who could be considered a cheap fill-in who might develop in to someone. If I was 1 game out, had a healthy Delgado, had a healthy rotation, had a healthy Beltran, had a healthy Reyes, had a healthy Putz, I'd probably pull that trigger. But 7 games out with 1/3 of my team on the DL and a 32 year old pitcher only signed for 1 more year? I could probably put Santana, Sabathia, and Halladay in my rotation and I'd still miss the playoffs unless I could get my team off the DL. that's exactly right. The Mets are just too far out at this point in time.

If Torres does come up and impresses with his stuff tomorrow, I could see him moving to the bullpen if some salary needs to be cleared and one of Dotel or Linebrink is moved if another starter is acquired. I'm not sure the organization would trust one start in the middle of July to declare someone 5th starter for the rest of the season, but I do think they would use them out of the pen...thinking of McCarthy right now.

People who are underage and have one beer are suddenly less capable of driving than someone who has had four beers and waited around another 30 minutes. Not sure of the laws around other states, but South Dakota, which has a zero-tolerance policy for underage drinkers, says that anyone under the age of 21 who has essentially any alcohol in their system will receive a DUI. A good friend of mine was the victim of that because he was drinking the night before, left for home at about 1:00 the next day, was pulled over and given a breathalyzer, and was arrested due to DUI. He later got out of it with an underage consumption, but that just doesn't seem right to me. If you are underage, have had 2 beers, and get pulled over, you should get an underage in consumption, not a DUI. Also, I believe that people should have to renew their driving license taking the road exam every 5-10 years. The reason I say that is because old people suck at driving. And further, in regards to driving, people should be pulled over for going excessively slow without reason. I understand they do this on most interstates, but if it is a 40 MPH street and someone is driving 20 MPH in a Buick Le Sabre, that is half the speed limit and they are a danger on the road, just as someone is a danger if they are going 60 MPH on the same street.

QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Jul 21, 2009 -> 01:17 AM) I think Richards is going to be awesome tomorrow. He hit a wall there for a bit, but don't forget this guy was running it up there 95-96 at one point. Plus he was kick ass against the Rays last season, esp after javy wet the bed. A lefty that can throw it hard with some semblance of breaking pitches that can't get it done as a starting pitcher. Sounds like JC Romero.

QUOTE (JohnCangelosi @ Jul 20, 2009 -> 10:17 PM) This is game 1 of a 17 game stretch that will be key in how we are looking heading into the final 7 weeks in the season. One down, 16 more to go, and if we can go 11-6 over this period I think we win this division. There's like a 10-game road trip in late August/early September that consists solely of Boston, New York, and Minnesota. I'm not going to look that far ahead, but if the division race stays close, that trip could make or break this team. They've also been pretty damn good on the road this season, even winning a game against Minnesota. I also believe that series includes our final game at the Metrodome, barring another 1-game playoff.

QUOTE (The Baconator @ Jul 21, 2009 -> 12:49 AM) Wait, hold up. I think a lot of people are moving too fast here. After 3 starts everyone was saying they wouldn't trade Richard, "he's the next thing". Poreda was always "untouchable", but now that he's up (and not being used) we need to send him down and get Torres? Now, I like Torres and think he might have a chance in the future, but it takes more than 10 appearances with a 2.45 ERA for Poreda and 12 starts for Richard. Sometimes you just need to give a player time to adjust before you send them down (see: Brian Anderson...). Torres will get his time, just like how Getz had to wait for awhile. But give Poreda a chance before they send him down so soon. Poreda has pitched very sparingly and in low leverage spots. Get him innings in AAA while a guy like Richards can go to the bullpen, where I think he'll end up being more effective anyways.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 19, 2009 -> 07:46 PM) And what are your economic policies, Dr. Wite? Give me all the money! I was actually just drunk and found that too awesome how similar that was to my name. I actually believe in a very conservative economic policy, letting the nature of free market economics to balance itself out over time. I understand the role of government in economics, but I'd much prefer that the government to be a moderator rather than the instigator, if you understand what I am getting at, which is part of the reason that I have not cared entirely for the bailout packages that companies have been receiving. At the same time, you can't just simply allow the banking industry as a whole to go fail on you...that wouldn't be good in the least. I'm probably not quite as profound as Witte, eh? That's what I get for only having one 't' in my name. -
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 19, 2009 -> 12:56 PM) Yes, it's the broadcast with Dibble and Bob Carpenter. Anyways, nice to see the Cubs facing a great pitcher in G. Mock today. That 2.0 WHIP is very deceiving. Dan Haren's ERA is almost less than Mock's WHIP.

QUOTE (beck72 @ Jul 19, 2009 -> 06:25 AM) Best case is no one gets hurt, and everyone stays fresh, and the bat they get may have to be moved around to see action[as a healthy Pods and Q should outproduce whoever they get]. Yet without adding another OFer who can hit and defend [better than what BA and Wise can give the sox], so the sox can rest Quentin, Dye, Thome and Pods, everything has to go perfect: Q can't re-injure his foot; a 38 and 35 year old [the teams' #3 and #4 hitters] have to keep producing during the hardest part of the season [the heat, playing through minor injuries, being worn down]; the SP has to keep producing; the bullpen can't have let downs; the defense can't get worse than how bad it's been. I'm not saying to acquire an All Star and have the guy as a backup. Or who could outproduce Pods, Q or Dye. But the sox need another OFer who could be a regular everyday player. BA and Wise are not. I liken it to the sox having Uribe last year. If he wasn't around for 3b when Crede went down, the sox don't make the playoffs. Right now, one of the Sox OFers go down, the sox don't have a guy who can step in and play without a MAJOR drop off in production. Someone who can hit .250, play solid defense, and play more than one OF spot would fit my requirements [like I have a say]. If the sox think Jordan Danks can do that, great. He's farther along than most people think. I imagine the Sox would rather not give up their minor league talent when they may have such players in Wise and Anderson, and potentially even Cook, Kroeger, and Danks (though that is likely a year early), while they may also be able to find a AAA player in someone else's organization for a nobody from the minors. There's really no need at this point to trade for an MLB 4th outfielder.

old people live in Arizona too. Not sure why, I figured they would burst into flames upon immediate contact with such direct sunlight

QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 17, 2009 -> 11:03 AM) Yeah, I'd imagine. I heard you still only get less than 75% accomplished of a normal course too, right? of summer classes I've taken, they usually bank on a lot of reading and in class, it's high participation, because 2 hours we get restless. kicked ass on the midterm btw. Chose to cover Witte's economic policies, ftw I believe you spelled my name wrong -

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jul 19, 2009 -> 01:28 AM) With Lee and Ramirez hitting, the Brewers and Cardinals don't have the punch to match the Cubs. Cubs don't have any pitching. Cards or Brewers really don't either, but an addition like Halladay to either St. Louis or Milwaukee puts either team on top. You can't really expect Pujols to stop, and the other guys around him seem to be heating up, and Milwaukee has a very potent offense as well. If either of those two get Halladay, the division is virtually their's.

QUOTE (beck72 @ Jul 18, 2009 -> 10:48 AM) The Sox M.O. in the past has been to "overpay" in terms of prospects in deals, in order to get cash back or to get better players. Key word there is better. If Quentin is healthy and Dye continues to produce, you aren't going to find much better production than the Sox have without giving up a torso along with that arm and leg.

Not sure if the semi-older crowd ever caught on to that, but it's kind of a funny, and, if you are into ethics, a "bad" song overall. It's still pretty funny though.

QUOTE (EvilJester99 @ Jul 18, 2009 -> 04:36 PM) Oh I don't doubt Cutler is going to make the WR look much better than they really are but if you think he is going to help them run their patterns better... you're dreamin......However don't get me wrong here. I hope he does make them into Pro Bowlers.. I just doubt it. At the same time, you can run good patterns, but if your QB can't get you the ball where it's supposed to be, you aren't going to catch it. Earl Bennett is also a 2nd year player now, and played with Cutler in college. He could blossom. QUOTE (rangercal @ Jul 18, 2009 -> 11:16 PM) What team doesn't have holes? (maybe NE) Green Bay has wr's, but they have more question marks than the bears. New England has holes too. Their running game has some depth, but there is not one good player amongst that entire group I would take over a ton of NFL running backs. They do throw the ball a lot, and anyone of their receivers or even Brady could suffer another injury. They may not have holes, but they may not have depth either. They are still very good though. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jul 19, 2009 -> 01:53 AM) Their running game is a huge question mark to me. I'm not a fan of Ryan Grant at all, and they've lost some solid o-linemen over the years. Not to mention they just switched to a 3-4 defense. The switch to a 3-4 is huge. Kampman could very well struggle quite a bit switching from the 4-3 to a 3-4. -
F***, it's good to see Jenks actually save a game against the Orioles. The only thing I hope any time I see the Sox play the O's is that it's not close. 3 runs is apparently close enough.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jul 16, 2009 -> 12:50 AM) Classic case of throwing s*** at the wall and seeing if it sticks (you don't sign a guy and stick him on the DL expecting him to make a big impact). Pedro is a name at this point. But at that price, he's worth a gamble. I couldn't disagree more in regards to this signing affecting what happens with Halladay. If the Phillies don't get him, it won't have a thing to do with this signing. agree; if anything, if they get Halladay, and they get Pedro's combination of his past 48 starts (4.74 ERA), they are happy with it. A rotation of Halladay/Hamels/s***who (? Happ? Moyer? Myers?) with Pedro coming out of the pen is a dangerous staff.

QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 07:36 PM) If I ever get a tattoo or tattoos, it's gonna be something like David Diehl: I wouldn't want it covering my whole arm like a sleeve, but I think having like a collage of tattoos extending down from the shoulder pads to front of the shoulder, bicep, and tricep area and stop before the elbow would look badass. Jake Long has something similar, but I think his look stupid. I gotta get my arms bigger though. That much tattoo gonna haunt your ass
