QUOTE (LosMediasBlancas @ Dec 25, 2008 -> 09:08 PM) No matter how inexpensive the beer is, if you have to polish off 8 of them to get even the slightest buzz, it's no longer a bargain. Got a great beer glass for X Mas by the way, luckily I have a few Sierra Nevadas in the fridge. maybe you're just a tank

QUOTE (Brian @ Dec 25, 2008 -> 01:00 PM) Down in St. Louis til Monday. Does NFL.com let you pay to watch games on their site anywhere? The Rams/Falcon game will probably be on down here and wanna watch the Bears, obviously. If you're free for the day, there's always the possibility of finding a bar with Sunday Ticket and an extra TV -
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 25, 2008 -> 07:40 PM) Throw Lucy in there as an off chance. If he can be healthy enough by ST to play the same way he did in 2008 at AAA, then he's what he was then - looking ready to be AJ's backup. I have no idea what the chances are of that, though. Not great I'm sure, but not zero either. I haven't been able to get any info on Donny's situation since the summer. I would guess it's closer to zero than 50/50. It's a tough break for Lucy, but from the sounds of it, it's a pretty devastating injury. Those odds aren't long-term...I have no idea what type of character person Lucy is or how hard he works, so I can't comment in that regard, but if he's a hard worker, I imagine he'll get a shot at some point in time in some organization.

QUOTE (LosMediasBlancas @ Dec 23, 2008 -> 10:45 PM) I am not drunk. So, I bought a 12-pack of Bud Light last night cuz it was on sale for $5.99. How can you pass that up, right? That stuff must be non alcoholic. Seriously, I pounded down 6 and didn't even realize it. Isn't Bud Light the best selling beer in the U.S? I would have looked for the 24 to see if it was cheaper. If it wasn't, I would have bought two 12-packs and had atleast one of them down in 3-4 hours.

Ahem. Merry Widgemas to all of you at Soxtalk. Remember 2005.

QUOTE (philadelphia sox fan @ Dec 24, 2008 -> 09:57 AM) I'm going to keep saying Chris Coste until someone sees me. What you all are describing is exactly what Chris Coste is... he's decent defensively but has the ability to hit .280+ He's a great fit; I don't see the Sox having the desire to give up any pieces for a backup catcher though, unless Philadelphia would take MacDougal for him. They've never given much effort into getting a good backup catcher, so I don't think they would now. I see it as Blanco, Miller, or Stewart as of this moment, with the favorites obviously being Miller and Stewart.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 22, 2008 -> 11:52 AM) Hmm Derick Lowe becomes a lot more interesting at say $10 to $12 million per season, versus $18. I doubt we are players, but one can dream I suppose. I would guess Lowe gets between $14-16 mill a year.

Angels May Consider Trading For Dye or Paulie

QUOTE (klaus kinski @ Dec 25, 2008 -> 09:15 AM) Just imagine all the angst here about us being cheap if we lost both K Rod and Texiera in the same off season. The Angels are gonna have to replace the offense-especially with the crosstown Dodgers on the upswing The Angels don't let the crosstown team decide what they do in the offseason. Just as the Sox shouldn't either. -

Angels May Consider Trading For Dye or Paulie

QUOTE (Sec101Row1 @ Dec 24, 2008 -> 09:17 AM) I'd like to see the Sox trade Dye or Paulie for Fred Lewis LF for the Giants. This would give a speedy lefty leadoff hitter. Has great tools, including speed and home-run power. Can play any of the three outfield positions. LF: Anderson CF: Lewis RF: Quentin Lewis is a good player and I'd have no problem with the Sox trading for him, but I doubt the Giants have any interest in dealing him, seeing as how they are pretty much in a full blown rebuilding. And Anderson would play CF on any team that he's on if he's starting. That's where all of his value is. -
QUOTE (klaus kinski @ Dec 23, 2008 -> 09:47 PM) I can see the North side team trying to get Matsui Does anyone know if the payroll of just the Yankee infield is more than several TEAMS total payroll in mlb? to answer your question, yes it is. ARod's at $32 mill, Jeter's at $20 mill, Teixeira will be at probably $20 mill, and Cano is making $6 mill...$78 million between the 4 of them.

Rumors: Sox/Reds Talking Dye for Bailey Swap

QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Dec 22, 2008 -> 08:40 AM) They have Yonder Alonso who is about as far from Cincinnatti as Beckham is from Chicago. They could make due for a while until he is ready. Obviously a Dye->Votto->Figgins deal would need to have other pieces added in as well. Maybe something like Angels get Reds get Sox get Votto Dye Figgins Fields K Escobar Dickerson Ortega Bourjos Anderson Figgins would be a one year rental, and I think would net Type A compensation. if I'm seeing this right, the Sox give up Dye, Fields, and Anderson - two starters and a reserve - for an overrated player in Figgins and two outfielders who look to be complete boom or bust type prospects. That's what's referred to as rape. Now that I've looked at Dickerson, I don't like him. Someone that strikes out as much as him isn't worth trading for unless it's cheap. Fields is OK because he doesn't cost the Sox anything, so it's worth the risk. Dickerson seems a bit overrated on here too. I will also jump on the burned/chopped/beaten with bats bandwagon as well. This trade doesn't seem likely to happen in the least. -
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Dec 23, 2008 -> 02:44 PM) I'm still not sold on Flowers sticking at catcher. the Sox don't really seem to care about defense behind the plate so long as he produces. AJ Pierzynski definitely isn't good defensively, but he hits and he handles pitchers. That's all Flowers has to show the capability of doing. If he does that, he's golden.

QUOTE (MO2005 @ Dec 22, 2008 -> 06:00 PM) Well all I can say is what happens after next year when we average 18,000 a game? Hell we mind as well relocate this team to Montreal. then I s*** bricks of gold and solve the current economic problems -
QUOTE (jenks45monster @ Dec 23, 2008 -> 09:26 PM) I honestly don't give a damn that he's used steroids, it's the fact that it starts breaks down the body after so much use. and it's a 1-year commitment. No team should be afraid of his body breaking down that badly.
-
QUOTE (sircaffey @ Dec 23, 2008 -> 09:24 PM) Absolutely. There just isn't a market for him. He's reached the point that no team will consider him to be their full-time 1B. I think it's down to either Tampa or Oakland and he'll take whichever team gives him the most money. That, or he can just retire, seeing as how he's loaded after the deal he signed with the Yankees.
-
QUOTE (jenks45monster @ Dec 23, 2008 -> 09:22 PM) That's not exactly cheap for a 38 year old, former steroid user, though. for an .875 OPS, that's cheap as hell. Thome's making $13 million this year and that's about what he put up last season. And who gives a s*** if he's a former steroid user, he's apologized for it and he's still a productive player. I want Barry Bonds on the Sox and he's the poster child for steroid use, but if they signed him, he'd put up sickass numbers for them and they'd be contenders.

QUOTE (jenks45monster @ Dec 23, 2008 -> 09:14 PM) Do you really think that Giambi will take that large of a pay cut from his what - $18 million last year? yeah...he is 38. I don't think he's going to go for like $3 million, but somewhere around $7-10 million for 1 year makes perfect sense to me for Giambi.

QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Dec 23, 2008 -> 05:52 PM) Yes, it really is. Bears are not serious contenders, Packers blow, Vikings are alright at best. Don't even get me started on the Lions. The Cardinals have a chance with a pretty great offense. Both divisions stink, but the NFC North is a joke. The Vikings are alright at best, yet absolutely destroyed the Cardinals, who have a pretty great offense, in Arizona a couple weeks back. I don't know about anybody else, but that makes perfect sense to me. -

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 23, 2008 -> 11:08 AM) Playing a full season, I think BA could hit 15-20 HR, but he'd also hit .210 I think with a sub-Uribe OBP. Kotsay if healthy would give you a .330-.340 OBP, though only marginal power (maybe 10 HR). Anderson gives you very good defense, but looking at recent years, I think Kotsay gives you good (but not as good) D as well. Anderson could spell Kotsay defensively like he did Griffey. I don't understand where you get the .210. Even with sporadic playing time, he's never hit lower than .225 during the season and, given regular playing time, I could easily see him hitting .240-.250. With the defense and power he provides, I would endorse Brian Anderson as the CFer hitting 9th. -
QUOTE (jenks45monster @ Dec 22, 2008 -> 03:20 PM) Damn, that's the lowest I've seen Viciedo ranked on anyone's board so far. "10) Dayan Viciendo, 3B, Grade C+: Wild guess on grade and rating. Scouting reports indicate Angel Villalona type, but who knows?" Why not do some research then to make your rankings a bit more legit? because research tells only so much and there's very limited footage of Viciedo. He wants to see him, so he's giving him an average grade for now. Scouting reports across the internet can say that he's got mad power and whatever else, but there are other reports that say that he's going to eat himself out of the league too. Without actually watching him, Sickels has nothing.

QUOTE (Sox It To Em @ Dec 23, 2008 -> 03:36 PM) The Yankees have signed an overweight starting pitcher who has thrown over 500 innings the past two years, a very good but not great first baseman, and an inconsistent, oft-injured starting pitcher. Their offense is ridiculously old, they're a poor defensive team, the back-end of their rotation is unproven, and their bullpen after Mariano is suspect. Frankly, I think they'll probably make the playoffs, but they're far from a lock for the pennant, in my opinion. They also signed two top of the rotation starters and a fantastic all-around 1Bman (very good but not great? that's basically the same exact thing and Teixeira is a top 5 1Bman in the game either way). The Yankees have made themselves worlds better this past offseason, even if it does come back and bite them in the ass in the long run...it really doesn't matter to them as they can spend and spend and it'll have little long-term repercussions on them.

I understand that the DBacks are in financial trouble, but there's no way they'd just up and give away a catcher that put up an .800 OPS in 400 or so PAs last year
