QUOTE (G&T @ Dec 22, 2008 -> 02:25 PM) The problem is that Ryan was a freak of nature and now he expects everyone to be able to do what he could do. That's a recipe for disaster. so I take it there were just a ton of freaks in the 60s and 70s too, eh?

QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Dec 22, 2008 -> 01:37 AM) Not if Hughes reaches his potential. It really depends on if or who Tampa adds to their lineup. Burrell or Bradley would be solid pieces for them at DH.

QUOTE (knightni @ Dec 21, 2008 -> 09:20 PM) Overnight Snow showers. Blowing snow. Snow may be heavy at times. Visibility one quarter mile or less at times. New snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches. Windy. Lows zero to 5 above. Temperature steady or slowly rising after midnight. West winds 20 to 30 mph. Wind chills 12 below to 22 below zero. Monday Areas of blowing snow in the morning. Cloudy with snow showers in the morning...then partly sunny with chance of snow showers in the afternoon. Snow may be heavy at times in the morning. Snow accumulation 1 to 3 inches. Total snow accumulation 4 to 8 inches. Highs 10 to 15. West winds 15 to 20 mph decreasing to 5 to 10 mph in the afternoon. Wind chills 2 below to 12 below zero. Monday Night Partly cloudy. Lows near zero. South winds 5 to 10 mph. Wind chills 10 below to 20 below zero. Tuesday Snow likely. Light snow accumulations. Highs in the upper 20s. South winds 10 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation 70 percent. Wind chills 14 below to 24 below zero in the morning. Tuesday Night Snow likely. Light snow accumulations. Lows in the upper 20s. South winds 10 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation 70 percent. Join the club. Welcome to Michigan Lake Effect snow plus the Iowa cold. Unless I plan on traveling, I'd much prefer snow and reasonable temperatures than pure, bitter cold. It's -21.5 right now here (thankfully I don't live in a tent or anything), and the forecast high for the next 3 days is like 3, 7, and 4.

QUOTE (beck72 @ Dec 21, 2008 -> 06:02 AM) There are similarities, such as having good numbers in most of his minor league stops and playing in an ASG. Yet Egbert only was looked at as a top prospect heading into 2008, a 13th rd pick, a year older than Marquez, and viewed as a 5th SP at best. Going by numbers, Egbert would seem a decent bet to bounce back. But "stuff-wise", Egbert hasn't had the tools to get people's attention. It's odd, but hardly a word of him gets mentioned. I recall differently, especially on this board (and I'm not talking about just Heads here, there were several, myself included, who thought Egbert had/has a chance to be a decent starting pitcher in the majors). You wanted an example of that, and I gave you one. Egbert had been good in the minors up until he hit AAA, had one bad year, and he was suddenly an afterthought.
-
QUOTE (beck72 @ Dec 21, 2008 -> 04:57 AM) Looking just at the 2008 numbers, Marquez looks like another AAA/ AAAA scrub. But if the sox had a SP prospect in AA who started the All Star game, a 1st round pick, a guy who projected like a #2 or #3 starter, and struggled the next year in AAA--the only season in the minors that he did, possibly due to an injury, few would be looking to trade him. Most would expect the guy to bounce back. You mean like Jack Egbert?

The easiest way to fix Jenks is to not let him pitch against Baltimore. His ERA and WHIP against every other opponent are 2.81 and 1.09 respectively.

QUOTE (jenks45monster @ Dec 20, 2008 -> 11:28 PM) Actually, he did live in the DR for 3-4 years. Well, I heard 4, but Wikipedia says 3. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alex_Rodriguez k I was wrong, he was still born in the US and resides here now. It's frustrating that a talent like that would play for the DR because he lived there for 3 or 4 years.

QUOTE (Felix @ Dec 20, 2008 -> 02:07 PM) I think Javy is going to do quite well in Atlanta, but at the same time, I'm glad KW traded him when he did. His time in Chicago was clearly done after the stretch run last season. likely getting the catcher of the future is pretty awesome too -
QUOTE (jenks45monster @ Dec 19, 2008 -> 10:47 PM) I heard that A-Rod was interested in playing for his native Dominican Republic this time around, or at least David Ortiz was pimping that idea out. http://www.nowpublic.com/sports/alex-rodri...aseball-classic native Dominican Republic? He was born in New York, he hasn't ever lived in the Dominican Republic.

QUOTE (sircaffey @ Dec 20, 2008 -> 05:06 PM) Marquez's AFL performance: 9 G, 5 GS...24.0 IP, 29 H, 10 BB, 20 K, 5.63 ERA, 1.63 WHIP All statistical signs point to him not being Major League ready. The K-rate is actually good to see, as that is a vast improvement on what he did last year. Perhaps the coaches at the AFL were trying to have him do something differently and he improved it. Still, the K/BB isn't good at all and the walk rate is mediocre. I think, if anything, he'll be similar to what Floyd gave the Sox in 2007.

No long-term extension talks for Bobby Jenks

QUOTE (IamtheHBOMB @ Dec 18, 2008 -> 10:54 PM) Can ptatc or someone equally qualified comment on how likely it is for Bobby's elbow to explode? Many here seem to think this is unavoidable. I'm curious to know what would be required for this to happen. The elbow is just a concern. That picture of him in your avatar is 100 pounds less than he is now, and he couldn't get off his ass when he fell down then. -
#1. Reggie Willits is nothing more than a glorified 4th outfielder. #2. Steve called this crazy the best by predicting, to me personally, that KW would make 0 moves at the Winter Meetings.

fwiw, Mark Buehrle is not an ace

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 18, 2008 -> 07:01 AM) 7-10 inches more of snow today, plus 1/2" of ice. Anyone who likes winter should die a slow, painful death. yeah I love winter and this has been a super pain in the ass

QUOTE (Jimbo's Drinker @ Dec 18, 2008 -> 02:07 AM) The twins will always be successful because they play a predetermined kind of baseball. They are very well taught to slap around hits in the minor leagues. The pitchers are taught to just throw strikes. Of couse, this will all change when they leave that joke of a stadium. The White Sox play chaos ball with homeruns homeruns and homeruns. chaos ball has helped win more World Series than slap the ball

QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Dec 17, 2008 -> 10:55 PM) A December record 3 inches of snow in Las Vegas closed the airport. In fact, a few more inches of snow are forecasted to fall tonight as well. This after they had similar stories in Baton Rouge and New Orleans last week. How is that possible, especially during a period of supposed incredible global warming that will kill all of our grandchildren? I would gladly take some global warming in the upper midwest right now. That'd be awesome.

Taking into consideration that he has a screw in his elbow, there's absolutely no reason not to take it year by year at this point. -
QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Dec 17, 2008 -> 11:35 PM) Please, the future's looking bright and i don't even need shades. We have good young ball players and we are in a great position to compete for years to come. 2009 could honestly be a pretty rough year, and that's all he was referencing

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Dec 17, 2008 -> 01:20 PM) BAM baby, I'm amazed by you
-
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Dec 17, 2008 -> 12:35 PM) That is a steal of a deal and I'm pissed the Sox wouldn't make that sort of offer. You know, they've just had a f***ing need at the top of the order for every year except one since Durham was dealt away (and that was when Pods had his great 05 season). I don't think there's any way the Sox are going to bank on someone's back staying healthy when it comes to a player who has to move around as much as say Furcal or Crede. One wrong step and they're on the shelf for a month or more at a time. When healthy, Furcal is a hell of a good bat, but I don't think you can guarantee that health and that's what made the Sox very leery of such a deal. That, and it appears Kinzer's kind of a dirty player along the same lines as Boras.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Dec 17, 2008 -> 12:34 PM) I think there really is something to that though. Some people really are TOO into MMOs and can't separate the two. I know when I was really into EQ2 and WOW for a couple of years, my social life took a dump, and it was always the first thing I did when I came home. It didn't affect my work performance but I could see how it could affect some people. Eventually I just had to quit, which is harder than it sounds b/c of all the social interaction. it's kind of like quitting Soxtalk

Rumors: Sox/Reds Talking Dye for Bailey Swap

QUOTE (qwerty @ Dec 17, 2008 -> 02:56 PM) I doubt they sign taveras as they simply won't win like they would with jerry hairston jr. I mean come on. I wish Jay Bruce was my GM. -
Rumors: Sox/Reds Talking Dye for Bailey Swap
witesoxfan replied to Dick Allen's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I'm talking merely from a statistical point of view...I still view him as Halladay deux and think that as he gets reaccustomed to his stuff while also working in everything else, he'll be a damn fine pitcher, and I see him eating more innings than Danks too. There's no one on the roster I'd prefer to be up in any clutch/big game situation than John Danks. -
The one player I would be completely disappointed in the Sox picking up this winter would be Juan Pierre. He and Jerry Owens are essentially the same exact player.

QUOTE (chisoxdavid @ Dec 17, 2008 -> 10:01 AM) Im glad that a White Sox player won but at the same time Im confused at how he won it. Can any one explain? the same reason Derek Jeter wins gold gloves
