so in looking up a bit on Gordon, I noticed that he was traded midseason for Jimmie Dykes in 1960. It's funny, seeing as how Dykes was in his age 63 season.
-
Of course, those complementary players are those that can be the difference between a .500 season and a 90 win season when it's all said and done. KW is going to make what he feels are the best moves for the organization while working within the budget.
-
You aren't going to get a talent like Bailey for either Thome or Konerko. There are question marks abound with him, but he has ace potential and he's close to the majors at a very young age.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Dec 9, 2008 -> 12:39 AM) The problem being that three of the players you mention weren’t even developed by the Rangers they came from outside the organization. That being said, I like Teargarden and Boggs, and they’ve got some decent pitching prospects coming up the pipe I don't think it matters that 3 of those players came from other organizations seeing as how they are now Texas Rangers and are developing as such.

QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Dec 8, 2008 -> 01:41 PM) Not saying I disagree, but isn't Abreu going against everything the club is saying this offseason? I mean, he's old and expensive, even on a short deal. I don't know how expensive he is, but he's pretty damn solid on the bases and gets on base at a pretty damn good rate. On a 2 year deal, he'd be outstanding, and while 3 years is pushing it, he'd still be solid.

Phil Rogers on Sox quest to find leadoff man

QUOTE (beck72 @ Dec 8, 2008 -> 06:10 PM) Like I said, Willits is an OBP guy. He has speed, yes. But he makes contact, works counts and hits for avg. The sox won't lack power guys, even if Dye is traded. They will hit their fair share of homers, that philosophy won't change in the Cell. But if reports are true, that basically every vet could be had, then the softball team approach to sox hitting is going the way of the 8 track. The sox need more well-rounded guys. Those are coming in the minors. But until then, the sox want to compete with guys like Thome and PK. And guys like Taveras and Willits may surround them. The same Reggie Willits who barely played last year other than late in games and put up a .552 OPS when he did play? There is no bigger proponent of getting on base and stealing than Scoscia, but when Willits plays 82 games and gets 136 plate appearances (which is an astounding statistic on its own, mind you), it tells you something about the quality of Willits. He's not a good player. If the Sox count on Reggie Willits and Willy Tavares to get on base and score runs for the Sox all year, it's going to be a long f***ing year. -
QUOTE (MHizzle85 @ Dec 8, 2008 -> 07:51 PM) I had a final presentation on Media Bias that I nailed earlier today. Tonight it's working on my 2 papers for Women & Gender Studies. Wednesday my take home final for Politics class is due and then my Accounting final exam is Thursday night. "I have an F in women's studies? But I love b****es!" sorry, saw it and it was the first thing that popped into my head, and I am currently doing everything in my power to do nothing scholastically

Rumors: Sox/Reds Talking Dye for Bailey Swap
witesoxfan replied to Dick Allen's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I wouldn't be surprised if KW is happy with just Bailey or, if the Sox are willing to kick in some cash, Bailey+. Because I can't imagine that there's any way the Sox will eat some of the contract and just get Bailey in return. -
QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Dec 8, 2008 -> 11:10 PM) http://blogs.chicagosports.chicagotribune....us-quo-not.html Reading between the lines isn't really that hard, and the writing is on the wall for Dye. He'll remain one of my favorite players ever.

I believe that Jose Valentin is Zeus.

QUOTE (qwerty @ Dec 8, 2008 -> 03:21 PM) Tigers get even worse... signed adam everett to a 1 year 1 million dollar contract. anybody that thinks the Tigers have a significant amount of money is absolutely fooling themselves. They're so low that they are depending on Ramon Santiago and Adam Everett at SS. I can't imagine how they'll be good next year.

Rumors: Sox/Reds Talking Dye for Bailey Swap

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Dec 8, 2008 -> 03:01 PM) Wasnt the rumor for Willy Mo AND Masterson? I dont remember but i remember a pitcher being rumored. That being said, what a relief it is that that trade never happened. On the Dye-Bailey rumor, i'm not sure what to think. Dye has been arguably the most underrated OF in baseball the past 4 years. He has done wonders for our team and is one of KWs best moves. However, he is getting older and who knows how much longer he will remain this productive for us. Moving him one year too early is better than one year too late, IMO. Plus, the idea of getting someone with the potential of a Homer Bailey is definitely intriguing. I'd say i'm on the fence about the trade if there is actual merit in it. Regardless, it would be tough seeing JD mashing for another team next year, no matter what the return for him may possibly be. The Sox wanted Pena and Masterson while the Red Sox were only willing to give up Pena and Hansen. I imagine it was a pretty easy trade for the Sox to turn down. -

QUOTE (DBAHO @ Dec 8, 2008 -> 08:29 AM) The only bright spot for us yesterday was the play of Tashard Choice. Over 150 total yards from scrimmage, and next year we'll have him, Barber and Felix Jones as our 3 RB's, wow. Offensive line needs to be a key in the off-season for the Cowboys. If healthy Kosier will be back at LG, but I wouldn't mind an upgrade at the T spots, or to take one nice and early in the draft. You want upgrades at tackle after Colombo is resigned. Ouchies. -
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Dec 8, 2008 -> 02:42 AM) At least it's a firm, erect logo. What kind of message would it send if they went with a limp, flaccid symbol? A poor one, that's what. Personally, for what the logo lacks in length and girth I think it more than makes up for in vigor, intensity and I'm sure angry, explosive copulation if head's fiery expression is any indication. I can't help but think about Darin Erstad.

The same argument can be made with Cotts though too. He had one good year for the Sox, but it was in 2005, and the Sox very well may have not won the division without Cotts, let alone the Series. It doesn't go into as many different degrees as the original went, but it's still something to consider all the same.

QUOTE (Texsox @ Dec 8, 2008 -> 12:04 PM) And with each passing day and each added player, it seems less and less likely to get done. Absolutely. -
Hermida is going to be very expensive to acquire, his injury prone, and people have questioned his desire to play. He reminds me a bit of a young JD Drew in all those senses, but it's still risky to acquire him. I think putting him on the backburner for now is a good option, and I think the Sox will rather look to free agency to pick up a player on the short-term. Abreu is a very interesting player to consider in all of this.

Rumors: Sox/Reds Talking Dye for Bailey Swap
witesoxfan replied to Dick Allen's topic in Pale Hose Talk
This seems like a deal that's been discussed at length and is or was very close to being done, but a number of things came up, especially the salary situations, and that this deal is at a point where it can still get done but it's not so far along that something has to come out of it. I wouldn't be surprised in the least if this rumors does just blow away in the wind. I will say that David Weathers, who Dick brought up a while earlier, is interesting in this all. The Sox generally never give cash in a deal, but they will take on contracts. I'm personally wondering if there isn't a possibility of this turning into a 5 player deal with the Sox dealing Dye and another player for Bailey, Weathers, and another. We'll just have to see how this plays out within the next week. -

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Dec 8, 2008 -> 12:59 AM) Bailey's stuff is probably better than anyone elses in the rotation (Floyds is just a slight notch below.) I give it two years tops before he's the sexy ace on our staff, if he really figures it out or if these rumors are true. If Bailey's healthy, his stuff is probably the best. But right now there's no pitcher in the Sox rotation with better stuff than Danks. His fastball/cutter/change/curve is crazy good. Floyd has video game stuff when he's on, but he became much more of a pitcher this year than in the past, and his stuff was anything but consistent. -
QUOTE (beck72 @ Dec 6, 2008 -> 03:35 PM) It's an interesting thought. A 2 year deal, for $12, 13 mill per? He likely could get a 3 yr deal from some other team. He's not getting a 4 yr deal. Ramirez would stay at 2b. Not the worst offseason plan. His agent would hang up the phone if you offered him 2 years. The A's reportedly offered 4 years but just didn't offer enough money and I'd be very surprised if he didn't get 4.

FWIW Ranger, I have absolutely no problem with your rankings. I'd disagree with a few things as I think the Eagles are too inconsistent to be a top 10 team though they do have the talent, but overall they look pretty good. Even at 12-1, I'm having trouble believing in the Titans. oh, and 6 points in the last 8 quarters for Buffalo after a game in which they scored 54 f***ing points. Yeah, pack it in boys. -

Samardzija still seems like all hype. He really was pretty mediocre last year in his 27 innings, as his WHIP was 1.41 and his runs allowed average was 3.90. He seems like a decent setup man rather than a good closer. -
