QUOTE (knightni @ Oct 31, 2008 -> 06:33 PM) Beltre's too expensive You tell me why, and I'll believe you.

QUOTE (Wanne @ Oct 31, 2008 -> 08:28 PM) You're assuming that somebody coming up with somebody on 1st or 2nd could actually get a basehit instead of swingin' for the fences. That's what we're missing. Because that's what the players in the lineup do in every plate appearance they get. Come on, get f***ing real.

QUOTE (fathom @ Oct 31, 2008 -> 02:43 PM) Taveras is a significantly better player than Owens. He has a great arm in CF, and he knows how to hit with his speed a lot better than Owens does. Taveras gets a crazy amount of infield hits...and Owens has never proven crap in the majors. Which is why Taveras is a more valuable player. I still really want nothing to do with either of them.

Brian Roberts could very easily be target #1 for the Sox this offseason, and anything else beyond that be damned. He makes a ridiculous amount of sense for the Sox and is a guy that Williams would overpay to get here, especially if he could get him signed to an extension.

QUOTE (fathom @ Oct 31, 2008 -> 11:53 AM) This isn't a surprise....you can't have your organization basically call you out for being a coward, prove them right, and expect to bring the player back the next year. I bet we'll see a Vazquez for Weeks trade made in the next few weeks. with the intention of having him play 2B or CF?

QUOTE (DBAHO @ Oct 31, 2008 -> 11:51 AM) Compare that to what some SP's on the FA market may get though. Still the Brewers may decide just to sign a Jon Garland type of pitcher for instance, but they're a team that likes to keep their draft picks also. They will keep their draft picks if they signed Garland. I don't know what type of contract Garland will get, but I'm pretty sure if he qualified, he was a Type B free agent, meaning Anaheim would just get an extra sandwich pick.

If Vazquez is traded to the Brewers, I don't take Weeks as much more than a throw-in. He's talented as hell, but he's without a position right now - he'd almost certainly have to be moved to CF - and he's been a pretty mediocre player most of the time he's been on the field. There's an offer the Brewers could make that would be interesting involving Weeks and not Hardy, but I'm just not sure the Sox could make it. If he does trade Vazquez, KW will be creative about it.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 31, 2008 -> 07:55 AM) I really wouldn't be surprised if something worked out to get Griff into the line up for 300-400 ABs. That knee injury combined with the type of hitter he is (one who generates power with his legs) means he was essentially just hitting with the weakest part of his swing last year, and still hitting a fair amount of balls into the gaps. I wouldn't want him around 7 days a week but about 3/5 of the time would be good for us and him. It would allow him to get plenty of rest so that his body wouldn't breakdown, and it would allow us to exploit some match ups. I think it'd be absolutely fantastic and would be something a mediocre bench over the past few years would need. You'd almost never ask Griffey to go play the field on one of his off days, but in a close game, he'd always be available for one at-bat against a good right-handed reliever. And I think it's entirely plausible that the Sox could get Griffey 300-400 ABs too. Keeping Anderson around would be a definite possibility, but if he's around, I wouldn't be surprised to see his role increase either. Griffey would also be available as insurance to CF, RF, DH, and as far as I'm concerned, 1B too. If any of those guys - whoever they are next year - have to hit the DL for a bit, Griffey is right there, ready to fill in. I'd absolutely love Griffey back next year, but here or gone, it isn't a big deal to me. I'm just happy I got to see him play in a Sox uniform.

http://www.suntimes.com/sports/baseball/wh...T-sox31.article it's from Cowley, so TIFWIW, but this doesn't surprise me in the least to be quite honest

so I've been up all night trying to finish an English mid-term that we got to take home (yay for adding that English minor ), and I'm on my last question...it's on "Tradition and the Individual Talent" by T.S. Eliot. Nothing against Eliot, because I love his work, but this is absolutely dreadful. I'd rather listen to someone scratching a chalkboard while eating with their mouth open for the next 2 hours than finish this. Ugh.

Bartolo Colon worked out fantastically. The Sox gave up, like, nothing, and he had a damn good year for the Sox. Also, I believe you are just talking about the offseason, but Garcia and Contreras worked out well too. Contreras was a project, but Garcia was having a fantastic season in Seattle when the Sox dealt for him.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Oct 30, 2008 -> 06:53 PM) What the f*** else are you going to base it on? WORLD SERIES CLUTCHINESS Crede's done as a member of the White Sox. If he's not, I might cry.

The problem I see with Dotel's Type A status is that he may not find a better offer on the market than the $6 mill, give or take, he'd be slated to get with the Sox in arbitration. You'd be stuck between a rock and a hard place. That being said, I wouldn't trade Dotel for his actual value...you'd absolutely have to get more simply because you could get two compensatory picks for him. I don't know how much more, but getting more would be a necessity. I brought up Carlos Villanueva in a hypothetical deal I brought up with Milwaukee, and I'd be OK with that. Villanueva was very good out of the pen this past season and, from what I've seen of him, looks to be a future setup man. That's the type of deal I would consider - getting a pitcher who could be just as good or has been just as good and has more cheap years left. Perhaps that would be Edwin Jackson, and I'd personally have no problem putting Jackson in either the pen or the rotation, because I think he could be successful in either spot. In short, I'm saying you have to trade Dotel as if he's a solid closer or dynamite setup man, which quite frankly, he is.

QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Oct 30, 2008 -> 05:05 PM) true. what about that 4th or 5th spot then? Do you guys feel comfortable letting Richard run with it? I think he can be more valuable as a set up man/ middle reliever/ spot starter. If we keep Javy, i would love to move him to the 5th spot (he was in the 5th spot in 2006). I'd be surprised if Javy is anything but the 4th starter going into next year if he's retained. I don't see the Sox bringing in anyone who will be capable of being a #2 or #3 to push Javy back a notch. Whether he's the 4th starter at the end of the season, if he is retained when it's all said and done, is a different story all together.

QUOTE (MO2005 @ Oct 30, 2008 -> 12:11 PM) Resigning Griffey?? Why? The guy is old, slow, and not what we need. Geez while we are at it why don't we bring back Roberto Alomar to play 2nd, Griffey plays center, and sign Kenny Rogers..Just sign all the old and over the hill players!! Because Griffey was battling a knee injury that likely took away some of his power. He was also a great presence in the clubhouse and those years of experience do come in handy. Essentially, he'd be brought in as an insurance policy while hopefully getting 300 PAs off the bench, which would be the best case scenario. If you ask for .260 25 .800, I really don't think you are asking too much of him...the only thing that's necessary is having someone on the bench who can hit LHP, because Griffey's pretty much hopeless against lefties. I'm still not going to rule out Griffey being the starting RFer for the White Sox next season either, though some crazy moves would have to be made for something like that to work out, as in bringing in a good 3B and 2B/SS/CF.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Oct 30, 2008 -> 04:32 PM) Think of the huge repercussions this move could have on Nick Swisher. It took until early October for Swisher to confide in a teammate about his legendary bat, Thunderbolt. That teammate was Toby Hall. I imagine he’s going to be devastated. Swisher might be gone anyways

2008 World Series - Philadelphia Phillies vs. Tampa Bay Rays

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 30, 2008 -> 11:12 AM) I honestly believe that we would have put up a better fight than Tampa. Tampa did look like they were just happy to be there. -
QUOTE (Wanne @ Oct 30, 2008 -> 03:57 PM) I'd almost bet they end up in 3rd place next year. Some of those guys had career years this past season. Price will be very nice in the rotation though. Not saying they're not good...but I really don't expect the same results next year. Other than guys in the bullpen, I'd disagree with this. And I still like Howell going forward...good fastball and breaking pitch. I think Balfour is going to get his s*** lit up next year though.
-
QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Oct 30, 2008 -> 03:27 PM) I still like the idea of Edwin Jackson as a closer. He's very much a one dimensional fireballer with limited control. THe Rays should exploit this, and utlize him in the bottom 9. So, Put Price in the rotation, move Sonnanstine either to another team or to relief, and work from there. Why would you move Sonnanstine when you are already moving Jackson to closer? I do like the Jackson to closer idea though, and I think it's something they should try. Rotation of Kazmir, Shields, Garza, Price, Sonnanstine, good lineup...I think they'll be back next year.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 30, 2008 -> 07:00 AM) Unfortunately, Ozzie is going to have to play the back-up catcher against right handed pitchers occassionally and sometimes when lefties start, righties come into relieve. AJP is going to need a break. Probably more than he's been getting since joining the White Sox. IMO, AJP has been the one guy who if he gets hurt and is out for a significant time, would be the biggest blow to the White Sox. His back-ups have been beyond awful. I will absolutely agree with all of this, and to end the conversation, Toby's option was declined. It doesn't rule out a resigning, but he can leave for all I really care.

Reyes looks good to me. Still dominant against lefties and respectable against righties. He can pitch in the 7th for me any time, and he wouldn't even be asked to do that in Chicago.

The Sox really have no use for Jake Peavy. They've shown the ability to develop good starters at the major league level, and bringing in Peavy isn't using the team's resources as best as they can.
