QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 20, 2008 -> 02:18 AM) How come the Brewers can make a run at CC but we can't? Attendance has been great on the south side. Sox need to make a splash of some kind, folks. If we hadn't squeaked out Minnesota and won the division, people would be clamoring for a total rebuild. Because KW and JR know a bad investment when they see it. Bartolo Colon, who has a very similar build and attacks hitters in pretty much the same way Sabathia does, though with slightly worse stuff at the time he hit free agency (but very good all the same), got a 4 year deal from the Angels. He didn't make it through those 4 years healthy. What makes you think Sabathia will remain healthy for the 6 or 7 years he'll end up getting?

QUOTE (YASNY @ Oct 18, 2008 -> 02:53 PM) Griffey COULD have a solid year, yes. However, the guy is 38 years old and looked much older this year. The knee surgery might help, but he's been beaking down for years. I wouldn't count on him for much at all. Agreed, which is why a good fallback option would have to be a necessity. It's more of a hunch than it is me having proof that he'll be good, but for cheap, I wouldn't be opposed to having him back at all. If money isn't an issue, than it'd be foolish not to bring him back. I also think Griffey accepting a small offer like that will help to solidify his induction on the first ballot...showing that it's not about money and how he just wants to play for the love of the game. That'd be incredible.

QUOTE (santo=dorf @ Oct 18, 2008 -> 08:09 AM) ...and you know this how? Because KW and company came out and said they were going to take a different approach to drafting in the next few years while trying not to make the safe pick. There's been a complete shift within the organization's thinking, and nothing in the past two years has made me think otherwise.
-
I'd take Griff in RF. I could see him having a really solid year next year...everything with his swing mechanics looked smooth, I think it was just a matter of him adjusting to better AL pitching. His bat is a little slow but I could easily see him putting up an .850 OPS or so, and I'd take that from the left side. I also really like the other lefty in the lineup for bullpen matchups, even though Griffey can't hit lefties whatsoever.

QUOTE (dasox24 @ Oct 17, 2008 -> 01:41 AM) I get just the letter "E" sometimes b/c my name is Evan. Lot of people just call me by my last name... This pretty much sums me right up.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 16, 2008 -> 11:22 PM) Do you think AJP is capable of throwing out anybody anymore? Good thing a lot of AL teams don't run a lot. If he makes accurate throws it's certainly possible.

QUOTE (Yoda @ Oct 17, 2008 -> 12:52 AM) Whoah there . . . now your putting names on the table that can't be comparable to the player in discussion. Who is this Timo Perez that you speak of? You know, as well as I do, that Manny has earned those World Series rings. I am not taking anything away from Eckstein or Timo, but when you look at the salary differences and the attitude's of these player's, there is a very broad horizon. Manny is getting the big bucks and in turn he is performing. A-Rod is getting much more but showing much less. Because there are 30+ other guys on his team that helped get the team to the playoffs, and then there are 24 other guys on his team during the playoffs? Did Manny win those rings all by himself? Who's had the better career, Ken Griffey Jr or Manny Ramirez? It's not an entirely flawed argument, but if you are using rings, than the answer should certainly be Manny Ramirez, right? It's also funny that you still have yet to acknowledge that you are tearing ARod apart because of 35 PAs. How on earth does that make sense?

Is there any greater beer on earth than Hamm's?

QUOTE (Yoda @ Oct 17, 2008 -> 12:30 AM) Yeah . . . for a guy who can show up in regular season play. Or should that even be green? Because he can show good #'s in regular season play, but can't produce in the postseason. Manny has been in 4 World Series team's, two which have given him two WS ring's that he can proudly wear on his finger's. A-Rod has NADA! The question of this thread was simply "Who's worth more . . ." and if you break down both players you will have results that are arguably good when talking about their offensive approach. But, you also have to look at their post-season experience and it's quite obvious that Manny is the more valuable player. Alex Rodriguez's postseason line - .279/.361/.483/.844. Not fantastic, but people seem to be pointing out that he's been absolutely beyond terrible...that looks respectable. In 2007, he put up a .267/.353/.467/.820...again, not fantastic, but he more than held his own. He was also very good in the 2004 postseason and even put up an .894 OPS in their collapse against Boston. Prior to that, he was pretty much a one-man wrecking crew. Where he struggled the most were the 2005 and 2006 postseasons...35 plate appearances. ARod is the most unclutch baseball player in the history of the universe because he struggled for a 35 plate appearance stretch in the postseason. Get f***ing real. I also enjoy the World Series ring argument, because it's one of the worst arguments one can make. Is Gavin Floyd a better pitcher than John Danks because he won more games? Are David Eckstein and Timo Perez better players than Alex Rodriguez because they've won two? or equals to Manny because they can put the same number of rings on their fingers?

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Oct 16, 2008 -> 09:44 PM) And B.J. Upton essentially wraps up the ALCS MVP. Wow. The Rays have now outscored the Bosox 29-5 the last three games IN BOSTON! Poor ESPN. -
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 16, 2008 -> 11:27 AM) There are several things that are great about Danks, and here is just a few that I REALLY like: 1. His determination to be successful. There are many talented pitchers that come up to the majors and completely stall with their development. Danks was up a year early last season and in the offseason decided that he needed to makes changes to be successful. He seeked out help to develop another pitch, he spent more time analyzing every one of his starts the previous season, and took it upon himself to not stand still with his talent. 2. His ice cold demeanor on the mound. Danks has shown already at a young age that he is capable of taking on the weight of the team and going out and taking the ball. There are few young pitchers out there that show this ability at such a young age. 3. His "aloof" personality. Even the guys in the locker room have stated that they have a high level of confidence in Danks even in pressure situations. They have said several times that they dont think it bothers him and that in turn gives the players alot of confidence for that game. He is almost Buehrle like in this sense. 4. His love for the White Sox. I honestly feel like he helped get his brother signed this past draft, and that he is one of those guys that will be around for many many years and WILL take hometown discounts. This guy fits perfectly on the south side of Chicago. um, I believe you forgot one 5. His name is Danks, and that is an adjective to describe good marijuana.

QUOTE (almagest @ Oct 16, 2008 -> 11:16 AM) Rodriguez and Ramirez have career OPS+ within 7 points of each other, in almost the same career length (15/16 years). Their career highs in OPS+ are within 9 points of each other. If Ramirez can post these numbers while "not trying," he's obviously a much better player than A-Rod on potential alone. And Rodriguez played a pretty solid SS for quite a few years and is now a suitable defensive 3Bman. Manny Ramirez plays a terrible defense in LF. ARod also has a 40-40 season under his belt and he could get his 300th stolen base sometime next season. Add to it that he's going into his age 33 season, and it's quite obvious who the more valuable player is.

QUOTE (chunk23 @ Oct 16, 2008 -> 11:39 AM) Can Aubrey Huff still play 3B? He'd be a great pickup. He really couldn't play it when he did play it.
-
Blanton has looked OK...he's a 7 inning, 3-4 run type of guy. If he puts that up against Tampa or Boston, Philadelphia will be feeling just fine. People do need to remember that the Red Sox aren't dead yet.

Remember Keith Law's preseason report on Floyd?
witesoxfan replied to scenario's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Keith Law said Fields had no problems catching up to fastballs but that he couldn't hit breaking balls. I really take what Keith Law says for a grain of salt. -
I actually think the Phillies are the favorites right now, just because they are an NL team playing NL style ball with an AL style team. I also think it's 50/50 regardless, and whoever Philly faces will make for a fascinating series.

QUOTE (Brian @ Oct 15, 2008 -> 10:08 PM) Manny wins rings and is more clutch. Even though the knocking of ARod not being clutch maybe a tad overrated. David Eckstein also wins rings. QUOTE (Yoda @ Oct 15, 2008 -> 10:27 PM) How's it overrated when he can't hit for lick in the playoffs? When it REALLY counts. Because he's not the only one that always sucks in the playoffs for the Yankees? I understand the whole "he's making 5 billion dollars a year so he should produce" argument, but when you get little to no help from your teammates, it tends to be hard. Anyways, Alex Rodriguez plays 3B, doesn't need to be traded to be motivated, and he annually puts up better regular season numbers than Manny Ramirez. Alex Rodriguez is easily more valuable than Manny Ramirez.

QUOTE (Yoda @ Oct 15, 2008 -> 10:29 PM) A lot of that success is due in part to Brad Lidge. and the rest of the bullpen holding leads until the 9th inning starters don't go 8 innings very often, especially in the NL. -

QUOTE (DBAHO @ Oct 15, 2008 -> 04:46 PM) Still if you use it to draft players such as Lance Broadway and Kyle McCullough, it isn't a huge loss. And you know KW likes to be aggressive. If he can get the right guy in FA, I'd think he'd definitely make a move there, losing draft picks or not. The Sox aren't going to be drafting Broadways or McCulloughs anymore though either.
