  1. Sox Bills whichever team signs Barry Bonds Patriots Syracuse basketball for some unexplainable reason that's pretty much it
  2. QUOTE (iamshack @ Apr 17, 2008 -> 03:29 PM) And what would be your reaction if we made that deal and won the World Series this year? That's a loaded question if I've ever seen one. I won't answer it. It also doesn't change the fact that trading Fields for Brian Roberts ties up, roughly, $19 mill next year between 2B and 3B and puts the Sox into a hell of a risky contract with Crede. What's the future of the Sox look like? I see more of what happened in the offseason of 2006, minus the Vazquez and Thome deals (because the Vazquez deal already was made) and I could see that turning into 2007 all over again really fast. I'd say wait about 2-3 months before you even think about either trading for Roberts or trading Fields, unless the package doesn't include Fields. Fields is the only impact position prospect the White Sox have in the upper minors right now...you don't move that for a 30 year old 2Bman
  3. Ugh. I am all for acquiring Brian Roberts, but I think it's absolutely ridiculous to even think about including Fields in a deal for him. And if you trade Fields for him, you are then required to either get another 3B or resign Crede. You resign Crede and then you likely have $50+ million tied up with a 3B over 30 with a sketchy back and another season of a good, but not fantastic, 2B at $9 mill. I really don't think that does anything for the future of the organization. If KW traded Fields for Roberts, I'd probably cry, because I would see that as another Chris Young for Javier Vazquez type deal, where, sure, the return you get is good for you, but hanging on to the prospect would save you so much money and trouble.
  4. QUOTE (lostfan @ Apr 17, 2008 -> 08:15 AM) Average gas tank size of 25 gallons? Geez do you drive an M1 Abrams dude? My gas tank is 16 gallons and that's on the larger end of non-SUVs. It's still gonna probably be in 7 figures though if you give a liberal estimate. It was a completely uneducated guess. My 1993 Toyota Camry has like a 15.5 gallon tank, and our older truck at home has two tanks, so...yeah.
  5. QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 17, 2008 -> 01:59 PM) The Brewers just can't hit right handed pitching so far this year. And if you want to talk about overrated players in baseball, Ryan Freel has to be at the top of the list. I haven't considered Ryan Freel a factor in a few years. He's a glorified super utility man as far as I'm concerned.
  6. QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Apr 17, 2008 -> 03:10 PM) Boers and Bernstein played a clip from the Reds announcers, i believe Marty Brennamen and Jeff Brantley, who absolutely laid into the Cubs fans, calling them something like the most obnoxious fans in baseball, etc... it's pretty funny I bet Cubs fans aren't clutch either though.
  7. QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Apr 17, 2008 -> 09:11 AM) Everyone reverts back to the Detorit Tiger / KC Royal Jerry Manuel days. Didn't good ole Jerry save the Tigers from being the worst baseball team of all time? In 2005 I seemed to think we struggled with them. Ozzie's opening day KC debut lingers a little as well. I think the Sox went like 11-8 against the Tigers in 2003. Meaning the Tigers had a quarter of their wins against the Sox that season.
  8. QUOTE (iamshack @ Apr 16, 2008 -> 08:35 PM) Wite, This analysis isn't simply about Josh Fields v. Joe Crede. It's about having a solid all-around player at third already, who may or may not be re-signable, and a player in Josh Fields that certainly has some talent, but in my opinion, is by no means untouchable. If you look at the debate going on in this thread, at least from my perspective, the issue isn't about Fields v. Crede. It's quite obvious they are very different players. But in my judgment, I think Crede is the better fit with this team, under this organizational regime, than Josh Fields. However, that, by no means is meant to convey that Josh should therefore be blocked by Crede or be forced as a square peg into a round hole at another position. Fields is an asset of the organization, and would be to any organization, and therefore, I am merely expressing the opinion that I think it would be in the organization's best interests, if Joe Crede could be re-signed to a reasonable contract (the operative words being "could" and "reasonable"), for Josh to be traded to a team in need of his services at third base in exchange for something that our current team is more in need of. That could be another prospect ready to step in (although at this point I'm not sure there is one available out there at any of our position(s) of need, it could be a young starting pitcher should Danks, Floyd, or Contreras falter, or it could be a prospect(s) with high upside that could step in a bit down the road to replace someone from our veteran core (such as Konerko, Dye, Pierzynski, etc.). See the player I mentioned earlier in this thread, Angel Villalona in the Giants system. Absolutely. And I think Joe Crede is the better all around player. That doesn't mean 2 years from now Fields couldn't be for any number of reasons. And I don't think it's advisable at all to have a player with previous back problems at 3B long term. I really don't want to get into this discussion though, and merely wanted to point out that Fields does actually have an average to above average eye at the plate.
  9. QUOTE (max power @ Apr 17, 2008 -> 02:35 AM) I hope you mean anyone on this team. Correct, because Chase Utley or even Brian Roberts would look fantastic.
  10. QUOTE (Texsox @ Apr 14, 2008 -> 05:40 PM) "definitely a hero in Sox nation" you mean Sawks you do mean Sawks nation right?
  11. QUOTE (knightni @ Apr 13, 2008 -> 08:08 AM) The sad part... He could actually afford to do that without a problem. I wouldn't say without a problem, seeing as how it would cost him right around $2 million, if I've done some basic figuring correctly (assuming an average gas tank size of 25 gallons, $3.20 gas, and 26,094 in paid attendance). Of course that's also assuming everyone's running on empty.
  12. Gavin Floyd is greater than the greatest. How dare you.
  13. QUOTE (Brian @ Apr 16, 2008 -> 08:39 PM) Yankees and Red Sox locked in another awfully played game. I don't think either of their rotations are really that good and I think their offenses are overrated. Essentially, I'm not a fan of either team, and I could easily see both of them missing the playoffs.
  14. TRIVIA: without looking it up, where was Floyd Bannister born?
  15. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Apr 16, 2008 -> 08:31 PM) Sweet. Im really glad we got Hernandez back. Everyone thought it was a big mistake to let him go, and now we got him back. 25K is more than worth it. The Sox actually made $25K on the whole deal, because it costs $50K to take a player in the MLB portion of the Rule V.
  16. QUOTE (max power @ Apr 17, 2008 -> 03:11 AM) If I do its because uribe is playing second now, not short where offensive suckiness is commonly accepted around the league in exchange for good defense. Right; Uribe is still the best player for the job right now, and the defense is helping out. It's hard to even consider benching him in favor of really anyone at this point in time.
  17. QUOTE (Vance Law @ Apr 17, 2008 -> 12:26 AM) I'm not saying what is or isn't. I'm just referring to what the actual market rate is. Carlos Silva got 4 years and $48 million this offseason, you'll recall. Barry Zito is making 74 infinity dollars. ^that Jose Contreras is only hard to move because he's injury prone, he's older than dirt, and he was absolutely terrible last year. His contract has little to do with it, and if he can put up an ERA around 4.75-5.00, he'll be absolutely fine as a 4th starter.
  18. QUOTE (max power @ Apr 16, 2008 -> 08:57 PM) I think Richar gets the job done just as well. I don't care who is more fluid. Richars arm is only a notch below uribe's, his range is as good if not better. Uribe has a better glove. More importantly, its 2nd base. Its not a position where defense is a major concern. Defense isn't a major concern, which is why I've said atleast once in this thread and a couple other places that once Richar is healthy and he starts hitting again, they should platoon. If Richar is significantly better, he will start over Uribe. It's pretty reasonable to think about it, honestly. I also think you overrate Richar's defense and underrate Uribe's, but that's merely an opinion.
  19. QUOTE (BobDylan @ Apr 17, 2008 -> 01:30 AM) Shame on the people who voted no. Big Frank never ran the bases like Jose. Frank Thomas also never grew the stache nor did he blow kisses to the camera like Jose either. I still miss him to this day.
  20. QUOTE (max power @ Apr 16, 2008 -> 08:39 PM) I agree but it sounds like some people would rather just keep uribe there when Richar is healthy because were winning. Right now we are winning in spite of uribe's awful batting not because of his defense. The defense helps though, and I don't think Richar is just a step below Uribe. I think Uribe is a bit more fluid in his movements and he has better range too. I think if Uribe is still performing like piss when Richar gets healthy and performing well, then you'll see him come up and get a few ABs at 2B...they'll definitely platoon a bit. If Richar takes the job from Uribe, so be it. If not, so be it.
  21. QUOTE (Wanne @ Apr 16, 2008 -> 07:54 PM) Absolutely. When I look at this team on paper...it's as good as any in the AL IMO. Obviously pitching is what's going to make or break this team and so far I think the positive attitude has rubbed off on this staff. I don't want to sound like a broken record...and I am very high on this team...but I'd be "more" high if Ozzie would sit Uribe's ass ever now and again. It's ridiculous..... With the way this offense is working, I'm not opposed to Uribe starting full time until Richar gets healthy and proves he's healthy or Uribe can't keep his OPS above his weight (I'm figuring he ways a little more than a quarter of a ton). The defense really is nice.
  22. I actually not ready to write Contreras off yet. He doesn't have the 95 MPH fastball and 87 MPH splitter anymore, but he's still about a league average #3 or #4 starter, and he's pitched well in pretty much every clutch situation put forth at him. If he can stay healthy or if the Sox can keep him rested well enough throughout the year, he'll be just fine, and that I have no doubt about.
  23. QUOTE (iamshack @ Apr 16, 2008 -> 04:58 PM) Secondly, your idea of "production" must simply be home runs. Make all the claims about how terrible Juan Uribe is offensively, but Josh has shown an inability to draw a significant number of walks, and an alarming strikeout rate throughout his career. I'm by no means projecting Josh Fields to remain at a level similar to Juan Uribe offensively, but that fact is, as of now, he has not proven he is a complete hitter. I'm not sure why you continue to dismiss that notion when the statistics expressly bare that out. I won't add much because this is a hot button topic for me. I will state that Josh Fields walked more times last year in roughly 400 PAs then Crede ever has in a full season at the major leagues, and that's with Josh having a monster hole in his swing. He was on pace to walk about 50 or so times, and if he can prove himself as a somewhat capable power threat and/or gets adjusted to major league pitching, I imagine that number will rise to anywhere from 60-80 walks a season.
