QUOTE(lvjeremylv @ Jan 27, 2008 -> 08:23 AM) Am I the only one that would trade Fields and whoever is good in our minor league system for Bedard and Roberts in a heartbeat? That would be the biggest no-brainer of all-time as far as I'm concerned. I am of the opinion that Crede is going to be just fine following his surgery, so if Josh were the centerpiece of a huge trade, we'd basically be giving up nothing. Then you offer Crede a 4 year deal worth $50M, he takes it, and everyone lives happily ever after. We then would have one of the best lineups in baseball, and one of the most dominant pitchers anchoring our staff. Now, I'm not naive - I know that it will never happen. But if the situation presented itself, it would be a very easy decision for KW and the Sox brass to make. Gah...you seriously think Crede is worth $12.5 mill a year?

Trade Uribe to BAL - sign Corey Patterson
witesoxfan replied to knightni's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
Career OPS+ of 83. One season with an OPS+ of better than 100. He'd be an expensive 4th OFer and he's clearly not capable of being a starting player, atleast not one for a team that expects to compete. The fact that you mention him as a leadoff possibility hurts this even more; he is not and should never be considered an option to lead off. If anything, he's a 9 hitter, acting more as someone who will roll the lineup over rather than ignite the offense (whether you actually believe in the leadoff hitter theory or not). I once thought Patterson was a decent option, but that was before the Sox brought in Swisher and I didn't think they had a chance in hell at competing. Now that they have a pretty solid core, Patterson should come nowhere near the Chicagoland area. -

QUOTE(knightni @ Jan 27, 2008 -> 02:50 AM) The Sox should see how he is in 3 years, when he's close to the end of his arbitration. I have a feeling that there will be at least 1 down year and a few trips to the DL by then. I'd venture to guess you could say that about 50% or more of everyone in the majors. -
QUOTE(Benchwarmerjim @ Jan 26, 2008 -> 11:10 PM) for once, the Twins spend some money! and keep my favorite player, Michael Cuddyer, for 3 possiblly 4 years! wee! So who are the Twins planning on having play CF this year Jim? I saw something that said Gardenhire thought about putting Cuddyer out there (which would be scary was hell), and I just don't see many options. Are they still planning on whoever they'd get back in a Johan deal? Because other than that, the Twins look like a very underrated team going into the season, especially if Liriano can return to atleast a halfway decent form.

QUOTE(SEALgep @ Jan 25, 2008 -> 09:38 PM) Maybe the Sox pick up Lowry to spin off to an NL team in a separate trade? There are 15 other NL teams. Why is Lowry still on the Giants? -

There's no way you can give up about 9 years of experience between Konerko and Fields in any deal involving a pitcher who has thrown only about 150 innings at the MLB level Honestly, is the 30 walk difference between Owens and Roberts worth giving up another 30 HR threat (with the potential for more with both Kong and Fields), to go along with a great reliever with stuff? That's a huge no, regardless of how overrated Fields and Konerko are with Sox fans. I might for Cain, but that's still probably a no. There's just no way you can give that much up for an NL West pitcher. -

QUOTE(Controlled Chaos @ Jan 24, 2008 -> 08:39 AM) Give me a break....he should be fired?? He has a right to his opinion and if he wants to call Heath Ledger a 'weirdo' for being 28 and thinking about death at such a young age, then he can. If he makes the same comment last week, nobody gives a s***, but because he died you can't do it anymore?? Personally, I think you're weirder if you're 28 and have not yet thought about death. That means you've either lived a very boring life, you haven't known someone who's died, or you haven't come to grips with the fact none of us are immortal.

QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Jan 24, 2008 -> 10:53 AM) Crede, Danks, MacDougal for Cain... i think Sabean takes that or at least thinks on it. I hope Sabean is as dumb as I think he is. -
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jan 23, 2008 -> 11:05 AM) You know, I think eventually you guys are gonna wind up eating your words on this...not because I have a huge amount of confidence in any specific guy, but just off of the numbers. Any time you give me a group of 4 moderately talented guys who are all fairly young and have moved their way all the way up someone's system to AAA, if you ask me what the odds are that 1 of those 4 will be a solid success story even after some early struggles, I'd say those chances are pretty good. You may not like those guys now, but the odds are at least one of them is going to turn into a solid major league pitcher. Maybe more. And I think the one it's going to be is Aardsma; all I've simply done at this point is said they suck right now (hence, Aardsma is the tallest midget of the 4), and that, right now, death is probably the same thing as picking one of those 4. The Sox are probably going to keep MacDougal because they gave up more to get him, but I thought Aardsma was better and think he will be a better reliever in the future. Kind of a weak head, but at the same time he's got stones; I think it's more a matter of maturation for Aardsma than anything else, and it's why I really hope he stays in the organization. I love his composure and think he's going to be a stud setup man someday. That's not this year.

QUOTE(bear_brian @ Jan 23, 2008 -> 09:37 PM) I am excited about Quentin's potential, but ... I don't know about you, but I don't see Swisher being what we are going to need for center field. Maybe he will prove me wrong, but he is a far cry defensively from Sizemore, or Granderson, and that's who the competition has. Additionally, putting OCab at lead-off is not where he excels. Crisp addresses both issues, and we are going to need as much defense as possible to help our 3-4-5 starters and to compensate for the growing pains Fields will have at third base. Crisp is a worse leadoff hitter than Cabrera.

Noah Lowry/Matt Cain (for some reason?)
witesoxfan replied to DBAHO's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
I had no idea it was over the next 2; I read it as $6.75 in both of the next two. Yeah that's a steal then, and really isn't that bad. Now knowing that, I would really care less if the Sox made this move or not. I've made it pretty clear that I'm not a big fan of Lowry, but that's a hell of a lot cheaper than for whatever reason I thought he was. -
If he's not in shape, he's not worth the money. And if he's not in shape, he has no reason to even think of asking for a 2 year deal.

Noah Lowry/Matt Cain (for some reason?)
witesoxfan replied to DBAHO's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
How much value does Lowry really have? The Giants have seemingly had him very available for a while now, and no one has pounced on it yet, so suddenly they trade him for Crede, who has virtually no value at all at this point? That would scream desperation (and probably a Sabean-type move) to get something for him, but then the White Sox are put in a position where they would have to trade him next. If he bombs, then what can they get for him? $6.75 mill is a steal for a quality starting pitcher now a days, seeing as how Marquis got that after putting up an ERA of 6 in the NL Central, but how much more can you really get for him that you can't get for Crede if he does in fact put up a terrible line? I just think you wait for Crede to prove he's healthy in the Spring and try to get a decent (like a B prospect or so, not some C level reliever in A ball) for him at that point in time. Or if you wanted s*** to get really complicated, try and bring a third team into it, but I don't see something like that happening this late in the offseason. -

QUOTE(sircaffey @ Jan 23, 2008 -> 12:04 PM) Why does everyone think he'd be crushed in the cell? His GB% of 52 last season was quite good. For comparisons, Buehrle's was 50. Vazquez's was 45. Contreras' was 50. He was equally good on the road as at home last season. He's improving, and was having a hell of a season until straining something in his elbow. Pre-Break numbers of 107.1 IP, 96 H, 3.35 ERA. Plus he's signed very cheap for the next 2 seasons. If Danks and his 40 GB% can pitch at the Cell, then Lowry certainly can. We'd be lucky to get Lowry for Crede. We aren't getting anyone better than Lowry for Crede. I would do that deal in a heartbeat. I agree the Sox would be lucky to get Lowry for Crede; I just don't think, from what I've seen of him and his numbers, that he would pitch well in the Cell. His peripherals are pretty terrible, I seem to recall some rather pedestrian stuff, though that may not be completely correct, and I'm not sure if he gets above 90 all the much. The way I look at it, he's due for some regression as it is; I still don't know how you put up a 1.55 WHIP and only put up a 3.92 ERA. Add to it that moving to the AL will increase his ERA, and moving from an upstart but mediocre division to one that's already among the best in the game will also probably increase his ERA slightly as well. I really don't think it's that far fetched to believe that moving to the AL could result in Lowry ending up with an ERA over 5.00 next year. So, as I said above, I do think the Sox would be lucky to get Lowry for Crede, but I still wouldn't do it, just because there are better ways to spend the money and I'm not sure Lowry is enough of an upgrade to be worth the $6.75 mill or so he's going to make over the next 2 years. -
Noah Lowry/Matt Cain (for some reason?)
witesoxfan replied to DBAHO's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
There may not be a pitcher who put up a sub 4 ERA last year in 150+ innings that is worse than Noah Lowry. Seriously, how do you put up a 3.92 ERA with a 1.55 WHIP, a K/BB of 1, and a K/9 of 5, other than pitching in San Francisco where you can give up only 12 homers because the ballpark is gigantic? I really think Lowry would put up an ERA of about 5.50 and could be worse than any other candidate the Sox currently have. He's an NL pitcher for sure. -

Easily the best video on YouTube Bartman was glorious too. My worst is easily the Music City Miracle, but that's mainly because I don't remember anything from the early 90s. I still say that was a forward pass, and no amount of proof will ever change that, because I'm goddamn stubborn. -
QUOTE(BearSox @ Jan 22, 2008 -> 11:24 PM) If healthy, MacDougal has pretty close to the best stuff in the pen, depending on how Jenks is pitching. As long as he throws strikes and stays healthy, he is tough to hit. But yes, key words, throws strikes and stays healthy. So, call me crazy, but I'd prefer to keep MacDougal just purely on the fact he could wind up being our best or 2nd best reliever. MacDougal threw strikes for a year and a half; otherwise, he's been pretty piss poor in his career at it. And he's never exactly been one who has been great at limiting hits. It seems he throws quite a few get me overs that are hit pretty hard, and when he doesn't throw those, he's walking people. I really don't like MacDougal; fantastic stuff, surely, but I just don't see him as a good pitcher by any stretch of the imagination, and I really doubt he ever will be good again. Perhaps with some fantastic coaching and adjustments, but I'm not even sure of that.
