QUOTE(kwolf68 @ Aug 12, 2007 -> 01:05 PM) The problem with letting JD walk is we have NO ONE, absolutely NO ONE, ready to take his place. I think back 2 years ago the idea was Ryan Sweeney would take over in RF by no later than '08, but right now Ryan doesn't appear ready to do that without a severe dropoff of production from Dye. Sweeney's power numbers have improved somewhat, he is running well and I still consider him the Sox best position prospect, but right now I see Sweeney as starting next year in AAA barring serious growth between now and next March. To that end, I'd like to reup Dye for a year with an option, and also an incentive laden contract. If Dye can produce big numbers, then he should get paid for it, but if he is slowing down or oft-injured I'd like to save money on him. This is assuming you no longer count Fields as a prospect. And that in itself still doesn't say much to me because of how weak the Sox really are in positional players. Quite frankly, I find it to mean that Sweeney's a tall midget.

He's thrown like a perfect game and a half. Just think about that for a second.

Truly incredible.

Haeger has absolutely no shot at being an above average major league pitcher. Gavin Floyd does. Add to it that Floyd is out of options, and Haeger has one more, and it makes absolutely no sense personnel wise to go with Haeger right now over Floyd.

QUOTE(DrunkBomber @ Aug 11, 2007 -> 11:21 PM) So it would taste like Miller lite? no, that's Icehouse we're looking for.

QUOTE(BearSox @ Aug 12, 2007 -> 09:04 AM) If I was a GM, I'd only sign him to a 1 year deal with an option for another year. If Texas or somewhere else offers him 3 years or something then it's time to say good bye, IMO. And that's why you're not GM. There's absolutely no way Dye would resign for 1 year. And 3 years really is not terrible; a 4 year contract is a killer, a 2 year contract is much more preferred, but 3 is tolerable. If you can get him for 2 with an option, than that would be wonderful. QUOTE(beck72 @ Aug 12, 2007 -> 10:08 AM) From the sox side, a 2 yr deal with the 3rd year a team option makes sense. Dye probably wants a 3 yr deal. With Thome probably retiring after 2009, the sox could use Dye at DH in 2010 that 3rd year. I don't see Thome retiring after 2009. I don't see him staying with the Sox, but he'll only be 39, he'll likely be nearing 600 homers, and he still almost certainly won't have a ring. He can probably play till he's 42 quite honestly.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 6, 2007 -> 09:11 PM) I really don't like the idea of giving up young pitching for old position players unless we think they're the single, last piece, but I could at least understand why we'd do that deal, and wouldn't want to kill anyone. We'd be getting younger, if it means anything

QUOTE(TheBigHurt @ Aug 10, 2007 -> 09:50 PM) I normally respect you but you're acting like an ass. So he has a lack of "leadership" for being injured? Uribe has very few cluth hits this year, if many hiyts at ALL worth noting. Erstad has done it most of the time he's played. Erstad's defense has been solid this year. Uribe's has slumped. So you are comparing someone who sucks to someone who sucks? Sweet, I hope they're both gone come this offseason, and this is coming from one of Uribe's biggest supporters.

QUOTE(Capn12 @ Aug 11, 2007 -> 06:32 AM) I love me some Josh Fields and Bobby Jenks. Thats about the only 2 that kept me interested in the Sox for a while, sadly. and Scott Podsednik

QUOTE(AirScott @ Aug 10, 2007 -> 09:57 PM) Can anyone give me a better reason that DJ should go other than "it kinda seems like Hawk might not respect him"? And I found it annoying when Steve Stone kept calling Javier Vazquez "Javy Lopez." I guess a lot of announcers have those hang-ups, though, like how Tim McCarver calls Bronson Arroyo "Brandon." Brandon Podsednik and i dunno, somewhere on The Dugout...I'm afraid to go there cuz the last 3-4 times I have, I've gotten a virus on my computer. Something about a baseball covered in Pujols's saliva.

QUOTE(Brian @ Aug 10, 2007 -> 08:08 PM) I thought David Boston was done with football but saw he is playing with TB. Wonder how small he is if he is off the juice. Remember, he had the body of a bodybuilder, not a football player.

QUOTE(greg775 @ Aug 10, 2007 -> 05:28 PM) No .500 for this team. Veterans in the lineup continue to have sub par years for them especially. Even our reliable starters have a bad outing or two out of five. Rookies are doing OK, but not lighting it up by any means. Bullpen still is scary. I'd say we will finish between 10-15 below .500 probably closer to 15 below. 15 below would mean the Sox lose a game to a rainout or makeup a game with a Wild Card team - both highly unlikely scenarios. 74-88 puts them at 14 below and 4th place in the AL Central 73-89 puts them at 16 below and 4th place in the AL Central Beyond that, Jermaine Dye is one of the best 2nd half's of anyone in baseball, Konerko's been very good since like June, Thome's always going to be good so long as he isn't banged up, and the rest of the lineup has played to about their expectations. I see this team finishing at the previously suggested 78-84...they're playing good enough baseball that they'll be above .500, but they don't have a good enough team that they'll be able to go on a very good streak and get to 85 wins, which leaves out the incredible 90 wins it would take to merely enter the Wild Card discussion. At the very most, they play well the rest of the season and do get to .500, but that doesn't do much for me, cuz this team needs just a bit of rebuilding.

QUOTE(TheOcho @ Aug 10, 2007 -> 11:18 PM) I was afraid at first it was Biel... she's ok? Alright, my fantasies can continue. I seriously hope you did in fact read the article I read. transworldnews.com

I'd rather have a 3rd of the payroll placed on like 4 other players rather than spending $30 mill a year on Arod. I love ARod to death, but that's ridiculous to have on the roster.

QUOTE(BearSox @ Aug 10, 2007 -> 11:33 PM) Me either, but I was just saying... Right, but if there's no harm, there's really no foul. He's got great numbers this year, so I'm really not sure why a team hasn't claimed him. I figured he would have gone to Tampa almost instantly.
-
I would just like to add that two huge positives of this season have been Jenks and Vazquez. And, to completely and egotistically toot my own horn here...I believe I was saying Javy would be good all offseason. I mean, month and a half to go and all, but damn has he been awesome.
-
I'm really not sure why anyone would really want to bring Podsednik back. It puzzles me. Maybe we all saw Darin Erstad and figured Scott Podsednik wasn't that bad.

I am still a Havy Jomer

QUOTE(Calderon @ Aug 10, 2007 -> 10:00 AM) I'd say he has Willie Harris-type potential. He can play probably three positions (LF, CF, 2B), he runs well, he's a terrific situational hitter. Here is a piece from MiLB.com on him: http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/news/ar...b&fext=.jsp Willie Harris is the GOAT. I'm not sure that comparison works.

QUOTE(BearSox @ Aug 10, 2007 -> 04:51 PM) I find it hard to believe that no other teams made an offer for him and that the Indians released him for nothing. Something is obviously wrong with him. and if there is, you then find out about it and he's gone. Same s*** as with Jeff Nelson, but with fewer surgeries and way, way younger. I don't see the risk in bringing him in.

If I ever see another white zombie, I plan on freaking the f*** out

Nothing is worse than going to sleep at 2:30 on a weeknight and having your neighbors come back, drunk as s***, and blare their top 40s s*** with their sub going and everything. Didn't matter what songs were playing, they all sucked.

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Aug 9, 2007 -> 05:56 PM) "He's hit the home runs, so you have to give him credit, but he's not Babe Ruth. He will never be Babe Ruth, or Hank Aaron, for that matter." --Bob Feller. Of course not, they didn't steal 500 bases to go along with the home run record. Only half kidding, because Hank Aaron isn't Babe Ruth or Barry Bonds, and Babe Ruth isn't Bonds or Aaron. It's just really an obvious quote, and I truly believe if you try to compare any and all of them, you are never going to get anywhere.

QUOTE(elrockinMT @ Aug 9, 2007 -> 02:08 PM) If Contreras finds his form again then we will have a real good pitcher to solidify that starting staff. NO, then you dump him again before he reverts back to the pitcher he has been.
