  1. It’s not an underpay if Paddack sucks, yet becomes increasingly expensive. They feel they can improve his offspeed offerings. Time will tell, but Pagan is nothing special and isn’t close to the same level of effectiveness he maintained with TB. If you don’t have a trustworthy closer, things can fall apart quickly…and start to cascade over to the entire pen.
  2. Why do we have to be optimistic for the M’s? Sympathy for Kelenic? Every projection system has them in the low 80’s for win because they won so many one and two run games last year. Rodriguez is going to be a star eventually, but they still have a ways to go. Fine, the Mariners are clearly going to make the playoffs this year just to prove that the White Sox can actually beat playoff teams, lol. Let’s see how we do with Tampa, Cleveland pitching and Minny first. Any thoughts last year at this point were PTSD related. It wasn’t until May 7th that the Sox gained the division lead.
  3. Did you make sure to pull it to second base to make it easier to record the out? Leury would have 20-25 extra infield singles per year with as much as he puts the ball on the ground…I remember the Porta Potties and buying souvenirs from that shack/trailer.
  4. Might have been better to prepare for his first three save opportunities…as he has about as much influence as the new Starbucks and Amazon union drives. Oh well, small starts can lead to big things later. “Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.” RFK, 1966, South Africa

  6. Toronto, NYY, Boston, TB and perhaps the Angels and Twins might have something to say about that…
  7. It certainly does if you subtract Keuchel or Harrison/Leury/VV/Kelly, etc. It’s also possible our season ticket base didn’t expand like one would have projected after two consecutive playoff appearances. We shouldn’t be behind the woeful Orioles after three similar weekday starts, regardless of the weather for the last two…Baltimore is having one of the most disheartening decades in franchise history.
  8. He can have his own separate dedicated thread when he surpasses 100 IP and is only 11-12 more starts away from locking in his 2023 option.
  9. For all starters not named Giolito, Lynn, Kopech, Cease and Keuchel…the optimal goal would be a .500 record in these games, although .450-.475 is perhaps more likely. Team Record 1-2 Velasquez (0-1), 8 2/3 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 6 BB, 7 K’s=4.15 ERA Lambert (0-1), 3 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, BB, K=6.00 ERA Total…11 2/3 IP, 9 H, 6 ER, 7 BB, 8 K’s. 4.63 ERA. 1.37 WHIP. About as good as could possibly be expected so far, right? (Looks pretty similar to what we're HOPING to get out of Keuchel, actually.)
  10. https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/pittsburgh-pirates/kebryan-hayes-17648/cash-earnings/ Pirates ALMOST beat the Grandal deal, came up $3.5 million short. Quite interesting structure. $10 million, $10 million, $7 million X 4 years, $8 million X 2 years, and $6 million in 2030...
  11. Total dollars/years, not player favorable "opt outs"
  12. That guy has already pitched for something like 12 or 13 different teams over the course of his minor league career, mostly at the lower levels... Talk about well-traveled. https://www.milb.com/player/johan-dominguez-667339
  13. Well, it's almost Jerry Owens...
  14. Of course, he was at that point something like 1 for 17 on the season... How many big league teams would Lambert actually get a start for at this point in the season? 92-94 MPH is below average for a major league starter now, fwiw (although his did "play up" a bit in this game, other than that one pitch.) 3-5? 7-8? Eventually, there's going to be a reckoning over playing time in early June when Kyle Lewis comes back. With Frazier, Rodriguez, Haniger and Lewis, someone's playing time is eventually going to be cut if they're to survive in the hyper-competitive AL Wildcard Race (assuming for now the Astros win the division again.)
  15. Wish they would let Romy play for 7-10 days but it will be Leury or Me sick (phone's translation of Mendick) undoubtedly. Back issues definitely start to creep up on athletes in their early to mid 30s.
  16. Well, if Liam pitches his next 8 2/3 without giving up a run, his ERA will be down to 4. Supposed to be VERY high winds tomorrow afternoon. Let's hope for Lambert's sake they are not blowing out or Julio Rodriguez might end up with 3 dingers.
  17. Here we go again. Miss the relative "chaos" of Colome 2010 saves, lol. April LIAM is 97 mph...whereas May LIAM is 98-100.
  18. Certainly they're going to send him to Charlotte for 2-3 starts...no?
  19. Guessing we'll get the inevitable "day to day" prognosis late/r after the game, if they even give one. Doesn't seem serious, more precautionary... More likely he sits tomorrow (Leury/Vaughn/Sheets) with Engel in RF again to solidify the defense.
  20. Vladdy gets spiked in the hand, bleeding...response is to stay in the game and hit three homers and a double against Cole and Loiasaga. Took him a couple of years, but wow. Also wonder how long the Nationals will keep Juan Soto with the team supposedly for sale by Lerner.
  21. Let's just get five innings in and call it a day. Of course, just know it won't be THAT easy.
