  1. Most are still going to side with Goldman Sachs entry level account managers compared to the CEO and CFO, especially when you consider average earnings and lack of pensions/benefits over a lifetime for a non first round draft pick. Heck, simply fortunate to get housing and non McDonald's/Taco Bell. Then you have to consider the players are getting less and less of the pie every year...compounded by that comparison of 30+ veteran players today in FA being quite similar to 50-55+ middle managers in the real world...at least in the capitalist pecking order. You certainly can't completely separate being a baseball fan from the business of baseball...and any time the word "union" enters a conversation, undoubtedly it gets sensitive, regardless of whether you are a teacher or not. It's also much easier to imagine making it as a player in any sport than being a multi-billionaire.
  2. Hahn should be fired on the spot for giving that type of deal to Story. Arenado he is not, and there was an appreciable/predictable fall off from Coors for him. Seager is the best fit for our line up but not happening in JR's lifetime.
  3. I still have no idea what the point of sending cash with Kimbrel to get a Kiermaier accomplishes...an ego-free GM (at least one completely desensitized to how Madrigal and Heuer will perform on the Northside) would admit we just got that one wrong and start over with a clean slate and exercise the buyout. It's like cutting off the nose to spite the face...or not walking away from casino because you just have to get back to $0 psychologically after taking heavy losses.
  4. But Phil Rogers still references them...and he's paid to write about baseball still, somehow. Tenure.
  5. The Rays will never spend that type of money on a closer in a million years...especially with their impression from when he pitched for Boston against the division. He would increase payroll by 25-30% alone...and Kiermaier gets so much of his value from CF defense, so we are still adding to the payroll by getting an older Engel at this point in his career. Unless we already could predict Luis Robert going down, it seems like too much of a luxury...unless we are going to up it significantly. You add Kiermaier l together with Leury, you should have just by gone after K.Wong and used internal youth and FA castoffs for the bench. We need finishing pieces to put this team over the top...Kiermaier 3-5 years ago would have been fine, but it would mean sacrificing Eloy or Vaughn.
  6. Trea Turner combined with someone else might have worked...
  7. Crochet hasn't worked nearly enough on endurance or secondary repertoire to pull that one off for next season...they would have to use a six man rotation the entire year, at best.
  8. Giants more recently under Faidi. A's will probably tear down now. Brewers, Braves, Cardinals, Indians some other examples of teams that make the best out of non Top Ten payrolls....although ATL is really close to 10 now.
  9. Who the hell is this M.White guy QBing the Jets?
  10. Maybe track down the guy who spent $8000 on Shiba Inu now worth almost $5 billion on paper. Could buy the White Sox twice over if he didn’t crash the market selling them.
  11. But what are the Braves and Astros spending on their pens…? Less than the White Sox at season’s end, even if you combine the two together. Minor league development/draft/trade.
  12. Keep him away from Cespedes’ car collection…
  13. According to the Michael Douglas movie Falling Down.
  14. https://sports.yahoo.com/could-the-braves-rebrand-and-drop-the-chop-experts-say-the-route-is-long-but-navigable-181929271.html The Braves would simply have to be subject to the same rules FIFA applies to racist chants in European soccer...doubt it ever happens, same with the Chiefs.
  15. So Baez, Story or trade? Unfortunately, more high K hitters won't change the complexion of the lineup much...but we're definitely not going after the Big 3 FA middle infielders.
  16. Might have been too optimistic. Just need a completely different offense (modern) approach on offense...just can't see it happening if they keep the coach's son as OC. No way can they allow Ferentz to pass the torch to Brian.
  17. You could have afforded Rodon and had another $15ish million to split between two veteran starters for the same sticker price as Keuchel.
  18. Uh, oh, there goes this thread down the drain. The Padres also interviewed Rojas, the former Mets' manager. Interestingly, no Espada. Eventually, Carlos Beltran is going to get another shot, somewhere. Maybe with the A's, although that would be a really tough gig. That said, expectations would be almost zero at this point.
  19. The Giants are still blocking the San Jose option...Salt Lake City is only ideal for Rockies matchups, but the location is far from ideal for the rest of baseball. Contracting seems to be out of the cards for at least another decade.
  20. And maybe this universal DH thing will work to the advantage of the Sox since we lead the world in them...that and the Braves' FA Four.
  21. That said, what can they do with their stadium/SF Giants territorial issue...strip the team down to the floorboards and maximize profits (harder to do with a salary floor) or simply sell off to the highest bidder.
  22. They had to get an experienced, battle-tested manager, and Melvin was the natural choice when Bochy didn't bite. Francona, the other guy I would have taken a run at. "As for what the Padres are getting here: Melvin led the A’s to three AL West titles (2012, 2013, 2020) and a 853-764 (.528) record during his tenure in Oakland. Only the Dodgers made the postseason more times than the A’s did between 2012 and 2020." https://www.sfgate.com/athletics/article/oakland-athletics-compensation-bob-melvin-padres-16575377.php
  23. Well yeah, Lynn is a risk, but no guarantee Gonsolin is more than a fifth starter/swing guy. For all we know, Lopez could fulfill the same role again...along with Cordero.
  24. Look at Ray’s longer term track record. Tons of walks and strikeouts, but before this season, he usually struggled to get out of the fifth. You can’t afford that risk at $30 million. In many ways, he’s a lot like Blake Snell, a talented but enigmatic/inconsistent performer who’s more of a luxury for Top 8 payroll teams. And from a marketing standpoint, his addition might not even mean more than ten additional season ticket packages sold. Just feels like spending that much on a guy in his FA push year is asking for trouble when he gets a multi-year or you have to overpay that dramatically for just 1-2 seasons.
