  1. Will agree with this sentiment. Never did military service, but was in AmeriCorps for two years...it's not defined as a job, because you get a stipend and roughly (this was back in 97 and 1998) $5000 for university expenses per year. We boarded up drug/crack houses, did Habitat for Humanity projects, worked in a soup kitchen on a weekly basis, helped a food pantry take deliveries, I drove a 16 passenger van to take women from the domestic violence shelter and drug rehab to their doctor/dentist/job interviews (a pain in the ass to back up or turn around), coached lots of different sports, taught ESL students (mostly from Mexico) English, participated in lots of projects with high school and university students for things like MLK Day, etc. Never a boring day....you really got to see how fortunate you were growing up. Even though our salary was set at the official poverty amount (between $7000-8000 back then), it was the most rewarding two years of my life in many ways...because it was all about doing things for others. I was based in Kansas City, Kansas and then was an AmeriCorps Promise Fellow (Colin Powell initiative) working with high school and middle school students in developing service projects, bringing kids from all different backgrounds together and of course seeking out funds through grant-writing and local corporations (Hallmark, H&R Block, Kauffman Foundation, etc). In actuality, the scholarship money for those who do actual military service is set at a higher rate, and I never had a problem with that at all, although sometimes when it was getting to be early evening in KCK you felt like you were taking your life in your hands, haha. Still not the same as battlefield conditions by any stretch of the imagination.
  2. Some of the members of the sports media might want to look for jobs as "political spin doctors" with as many position reversals on who will end up signing where as we've seen in the last month...geez.
  3. Raymond Reddington could solve this impasse. Or Dembe.
  4. Since JR is in charge of the deal now, might as well shout at the wind or at least windmills.
  5. Seems that the number of thread views being greater than 2019 Sox attendance figure if neither player signs is a distinct possibility.
  6. The only comp to Pujols is going to be Mike Trout when he hits free agency at age 30 after the 2020 season...in terms of HoF numbers already before that final deal.
  7. Obviously to project their future values as somewhere between Steve Sax and Cory Snyder...
  8. This is probably why the White Sox as the favorite team of Iowans is down to about 5% of those surveyed...or maybe it’s the crappy radio signal now.
  9. Which will arrive first, the final GoT season or a Machado deal? Or Machado vs. another book from George R.R. Martin? “Spring is coming” doesn’t quite work as a tagline in mid-January. And SoxFest might be about as well attended as The Flock Of Seagulls reunion tour at this rate...
  10. If Paul didn’t get hurt last year, GSW was in real trouble. Otoh, the Warriors would have four in a row if not for Draymond’s suspension and Curry injury. The CLE win really helped to create the illusion of a fair-ish competition.
  11. Yeah, whatever a real legit offer would be here that they would actually have to consider carefully before rejecting...
  12. And that’s when the second guessing about “why not just offer him 7/$280 and make one final “best” offer after that...?” The theory will be that we gave other teams too much time on the sidelines to reconsider their options/positioning. If this strategy works AND saves money, it’s brilliant. Of course, if it eventually fails...not so much. Of course, the alternative is Machado or Harper never wanting to sign with the Sox unless there was no other choice...and assuming the risk to wait it out for the “bigger, better thing” to materialize, ultimately.
  13. More biased East Coast media, lol. Well, Atlanta’s at least EST. I remember this guy from his sports radio show for either ESPN or CBS Sports.
  14. This new thread title is a jinx, lol. Groundhog Day, Groundhog’s Day...Deja Vu Day, must have correct grammar or he signs elsewhere. And Sonny & Cher hit song allusions don’t help. Maybe we can remind Machado of this: Bought to you by the same wonderful fans who snowballed Santa Claus...and threw snowballs loaded with AA batteries, and who egged the opposing teams’ buses when they arrived at their stadium...and were so classy they had a judge on duty at the old Veteran Stadium complete with holding cells....and....
  15. This was THE Wednesday predicted to be THE day.
  16. Well, maybe if they hadn’t gone through the whole A-Rod Experience...according to one chart, Patrick Wisdom or Kiner-Falefa.
  17. Sounds like the synopsis of an upcoming super hero movie...with a strange passive tense, lol.
  18. And yet the White Sox seem to have drilled down on the “value” contract from the very beginning...the real question is what teams other than the Sox and Phillies can actually afford to pay Harper what he believes he’s worth (especially if the White Sox drop out of negotiations)?
  19. In other words, a Boras client would never sign for fewer total years if more were available? And yet the common assumption is Harper will be the first one who needs to change positions...Harper to 1B, where his value is nearly bat only.
  20. But aren’t a lot more Machado suitors likely if the bidding is in the $250 million range rather than the $325-350 for Harper? Who else can afford Harper, realistically?
  21. https://sports.yahoo.com/most-likely-mystery-team-candidates-172230958.html Who are the mystery teams possibly behind Harper and Machado?
