  1. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jun 12, 2017 -> 06:33 PM) Kevin Millar?? I'll gladly take Kevin Millar. Sounds like what they said about Konerko. Didn't someone just say he was an excellent fastball hitter?
  2. Moncada Kopech Robert Giolito Lopez You can argue anywhere from 6-8....between Collins and Fulmer, that's the argument, over those three. Fwiw, Dunning's rising and Adams has looked much better in the last month. Not sure what to make of Burdi right now. Or Basabe.
  3. Seems they liked Burger as a hitter more than White....he's certainly very stocky. One of the concerns with White was not walking enough. Seems like a down to earth kid like Crede, maybe a bit more personality. Somehow, we've got to get some plus defenders on that field, though. At any rate, that pick was in there in a heartbeat. No hesitation...seems everyone knew how the first ten would fall. Watching Hiura more, not sold 100% on him, either.
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 12, 2017 -> 02:52 PM) It was his first game in like a year. Think of it as spring training where guys don't play full games until a couple of weeks into the spring. Probably also the hottest time of the day with games beginning at 10:30....maybe a lot of glare in the outfield, anything's possible. Or simply wanted him to sit with the two times successfully reaching base and build on that for tmrw hopefully. Or just manager's preferred late inning defensive alignment from first week.
  5. Seems consensus is that Kendall is falling quite a bit now...
  6. Bit of a shocker with Callis moving to Evan White. One of the red flags seems to be his low walk rate. Evan White has similar upside to Pavin Smith from Virginia, although with a smaller floor. White’s bat will determine if he can stick at 1B and there are certainly questions if there is enough power and bat for him to stick there. He projects more as a top of the order hitter due to his batted ball skills and speed. I have concerns about his ability to draw walks, which could limit his ability to get on base when he’s not hitting, but he doesn’t have a big strikeout problem. I’d like to see more power and walks when he hits the pros. http://www.azsnakepit.com/2017/6/10/157508...ity-of-kentucky
  7. This change reflects the way front offices’ draft strategies have shifted over time, particularly in the post-“Moneyball” era. As other teams followed Beane’s lead and made selections guided by research about past drafts, the number of picks devoted to college players at all positions rose compared to previous batch of drafts. But that, in turn, caused college prospects to become overvalued, and, starting in the ’90s, they began delivering fewer returns than before. Although college hitters still appear to be far better bargains than high school ones, college pitchers have gone from being the draft’s best-kept secret to being a terrible investment. At the same time, their once-maligned high school counterparts have become more valuable. https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/moneyb...=espn:frontpage Moneyball draft advice has lost its usefulness Another interesting tidbit When I attended the SABR Analytics Conference in 2016, one of the more interesting presentations was delivered by Robert Brustad, a professor at Northern Colorado University's School of Sport and Exercise Science. The basic synopsis: Brustad studied the ages of high school kids selected in the first 20 rounds from 2005 to 2012 and found older high school players eventually underachieved based on their draft position while younger high schoolers overachieved. (Brustad's study produced similar results to one by Rany Jazeryli that reviewed drafts from 1965 to 1995.) This is a good sign for Greene, who doesn't turn 18 until August, but a bad one for Law's No. 18 prospect, LHP Trevor Rogers, who turns 20 in November. Some "young" players, all not yet 18 when drafted included Mike Trout, Madison Bumgarner, Anthony Rizzo, Correa, Francisco Lindor, Freddie Freeman and Chris Archer. Other young high schoolers who will be 17 on draft day include Puerto Rican OF Heliot Ramos (No. 21 on Law's board), RHP Shane Baz (No. 45 on Law's board), and OF Quentin Holmes (No. 33 on MLB.com's board). http://www.espn.com/blog/sweetspot/post/_/...n-mlb-draft-day

  11. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jun 12, 2017 -> 09:54 AM) Ack, I just can't get behind choosing a 1b here without more power than these guys. I get the lack of good hit tools in our org, but IMHO, you want to use your 1st round choice to select the player with the chance to be really special, particularly if you are rebuilding and envision having a lot of money to spend on payroll. Spend the money for the high OBP 1b in free agency, please. Moreland and Logan Morrison two of the best FA deals. M. Reynolds, Smoak, Alonso, Thames, Holliday, T. Shaw, Gyorko, Jay Bruce also come to mind.
  12. Surprised that one doesn't have its own thread by now...
  13. Wil Cordero also comes to mind with the Sox. Albert Belle was charged with domestic battery in 1998.

  15. https://www.yahoo.com/news/megyn-kelly-nbc-...-094735458.html Imagine your feeling if you were one of those Newtown parents, especially with the timing around Father's Day...that's almost as absurd as connecting Ted Cruz to Lee Harvey Oswald and the JFK assassination. Boycotting the network..not sure about that. Obviously her past with Fox makes her a lightning rod. Can anyone imagine Brokaw or Brian Williams having Alex Jones on network tv news?
  16. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Jun 12, 2017 -> 07:47 AM) Just look at his facebook comments. At best you can say he hates everybody and/or is just f*cked int he head . Seems he has kind words for everyone. Still no alt-right. http://dailycaller.com/2017/05/28/portland...ders-supporter/ http://www.salon.com/2017/06/09/accused-po...right-rhetoric/ Christian’s court appearances have been marked by much shouting by him, and much of what he’s saying sounds like he’s directly channeling the talking points promulgated by groups like the Proud Boys, the Oath Keepers, Patriot Prayer and fans of Kyle Chapman, known to his followers as “Based Stickman.” During a court appearance on Wednesday, Christian started ranting about how he’s “not guilty of anything but defending myself against violent aggression by Micah Fletcher,” the lone survivor among the three men Christian allegedly stabbed after they intervened during his racist tirade against two women on the train. At his arraignment last week, Christian yelled, “Get out if you don’t like free speech!” and “Death to antifa!” (That’s an apparent reference to the left-wing street protesters who call their movement “antifa” for antifascist.) These outbursts directly echo the top three claims chewed over obsessively by the burgeoning movement of hard-line Donald Trump supporters who are pushing for street protests that often end in violence: 1. Their free speech rights are somehow being suppressed by leftists. 2. They are in constant physical danger from leftists and need to resort to physical violence in self-defense. 3. Antifa protesters — a group of self-styled radicals who embrace a black-clothes-and-bandanas aesthetic — are a serious threat that must be met with suppressive violence. As I’ve previously reported for Salon, these talking points are a transparent fig leaf for the real agenda of this loose coalition of hard-right types, who are advancing an authoritarian agenda and intimidating the Trump resistance with a show of violence. So instead of directly defending racist rhetoric like that advanced by Richard Spencer, Milo Yiannopoulos, Charles Murray or Ann Coulter, many of these alt-right types will instead claim to be defending the free speech rights of racist provocateurs, even if in many cases they do so by heckling or attacking leftists exercising their own free speech rights. Similarly, the claims to “self-defense” are offered in bad faith, as even a casual perusal of alt-right sites demonstrates a strong yearning for violence and the hope that liberals will do something, no matter how slight, that can be used as justification for cracking skulls in. That’s why there’s this obsession with antifa protesters, as their radicalism and similarly discomfiting willingness to push beyond protest or civil disobedience into vandalism and violence offers the alt-right a convenient excuse He doesn't give an actual reason for being a Sanders supporter in terms of platform issues, is just virulently anti Hillary.
  17. Not to mention Robert has a lot of the same tools...so not quite the same amount of pressure to find a future CFer on Hahn right now. (And Basabe.)
  18. http://www.dailyherald.com/sports/20170607...e-sox-next-week Looks like LUIS Robert will debut sometime this week...isn't clear if he will come to the US in late July or August.
  19. Adell, Beck, Kendall, Smith, Haseley...? Burger, White, Hiura...on the outside looking in? It would be interesting to know which pitcher....undoubtedly a college arm.
  20. QUOTE (Tex @ Jun 12, 2017 -> 05:47 AM) Civility is the main thing we are looking for. What Greg writes may at times be frustrating, challenging, baiting, maybe what some people would call trolling, I can't think of a post where we attacked someone personally. I don't know Greg the person, I only know what he writes which creates a screen character. Is it his true thoughts and beliefs? I don't know and don't worry about that. Same with every other poster here. I personally believe the 'Buster is a little better because of Greg and other posters like him stirring the pot. Let me offer an example. Years ago a poster here who I greatly respect and like accused me of not liking him based on the battles we had here on the pages of the 'buster. I was shocked that he thought that, but after thinking about the arguments we had and how we responded to each other, it made sense. That should not have happened and are the types of posts we would like to tone down. I recognize that the hope he has for America is the same as mine, we only differ on the route to that dream. Mine works and his won't. A final thought. I believe the topics we discuss here are important to the future of our country. If we each tried to move people to our point of view that is truly doing something for what we each believe is right. We aren't going to do that by insulting each other. I really want y'all to resist a border wall, especially through a National Park. I'm not going to do that by calling you a racist idiot. I want y'all to support a guest worker program and a path to limited citizenship for the undocumented workers contributing each day to our success. I can't achieve that through insults. I'd like y'all to push for less government borrowing. And I will leave you with this. A now banned poster accused me of always humming this tune as I was sitting around this campfire . . . Kumbaya my Lord, kumbaya Kumbaya my Lord, kumbaya Kumbaya my Lord, kumbaya Oh Lord, kumbaya Someone's singing Lord, kumbaya Someone's singing Lord, kumbaya Someone's singing Lord, kumbaya Oh Lord, kumbayah Someone's laughing, Lord, kumbaya Someone's laughing, Lord, kumbaya Someone's laughing, Lord, kumbaya Oh Lord, kumbaya Someone's crying, Lord, kumbaya Someone's crying, Lord, kumbaya Someone's crying, Lord, kumbaya Oh Lord, kumbaya Someone's praying, Lord, kumbaya Someone's… How many times when someone has made a reasonable/centrist/moderate policy proposal has that generated any serious discussion around here? Maybe 10% or so. Instead, we spend more time talking about Maher or Kathy Griffin, typically. Process/tactics and not substance. That's obviously true of society in general, not just messageboards.

  24. QUOTE (Reddy @ Jun 11, 2017 -> 07:26 PM) I assume calling someone "racist" qualifies under these new rules? I just want to make sure I understand. That's a bit of a complicated one. There are various shades, like we've seen recently. The more direct version, and then Republicans almost always reacting defensively to any "charge" that can be construed as not caring about people, particularly minorities. Then you have Breitbart and the alt-right movement comprising 10% of Trump voters, and mainstream Republicans resisting being lumped under that big tent theory. And calling a collective racist, vs. a specific person or poster.
