Mets/LAD/NYy interested in Alexei, according to Levine
caulfield12 replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
They're obviously not going to trade Soler, Russell or Bryant. The problem becomes creating a package with what's left for one of the best pitchers in baseball (albeit a handsomely paid one). The Phillies might be interested in a package centered around Castro, Edwards and McKinney if they could get someone to take Rollins off their hands. Baez can't be the centerpiece right now, coming off his 2014. -
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Nov 17, 2014 -> 08:06 AM) Lego movie, How to Train your dragon 2. And probably that last Studio Ghibli film(can't recall the name) The Wind Rises... Too controversial, unless you're referring to The Tale of Princess Kaguya.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Nov 17, 2014 -> 07:53 AM) Big Hero 6 and Frozen fall on the same voting year? That doesn't even seem possible, it seems like Frozen has been out forever Guess I was wrong. Thanksgiving time a year ago. It took until February/March to become a phenomenon here in China...with all the schoolchildren singing "Let It Go." I think I heard that song over the loudspeakers for 3-4 straight months. The Lego Movie then...against Big Hero Six?

Moviegoers don't like "creepy" unless it's a serial killer/supervillain. By all accounts, Gyllenhaal and Carell are very good in their respective performances, but not enough to move the box office meter. Thinking back to Interstellar, it's just missing something "fun" and "engaging" that Inception had...a quality that kind of forced you to go along for the ride and think along with it. Whereas Interstellar kind of beats you over the head with these heavy topics like physics and love and sacrifice that resonate, but maybe not quite to the point of making you care (like Michael Caine when he's in the Batman universe). It made me think back to the movie Contact, and the debates between Matthew McConaughey and Jodie Foster's two main characters. I have a feeling if I revisited Contact again, I would prefer that. Maybe it's because Anne Hathaway annoyed me....along with the "cameo" surprise in the middle which is too distracting.

St. Vincent's a nice quiet little film. If you like Bill Murray at his ornery best (think Clint Eastwood in Gran Torino), this one's for you. Melissa McCarthy does well in an understated role, and Naomi Watts didn't need the fake Russian accent. I'm pretty sure this was the acting debut of the kid who plays Oliver...he does a commendable job and holds his own. This awards season is going to be a free-for-all. Foxcatcher's getting raves for Carell and Ruffalo's performances, but most non-critics who see it almost detest it and find it droll and mundane...when they're not being annoyed by Carell's heavy make-up to play DuPont. Interstellar's just not quite clicking to the point where it becomes a best picture candidate. Birdman's not being seen by enough to create a buzz. Gone Girl and Nightcrawler are GOOD films but not Academy worthy, although Ben Affleck seems to be getting overpraised these days to make up for when he was down in the dumps with J-Lo. Whiplash is attracting some fans...but enough to break out? Probably not. Big Hero 6 and Frozen seem poised to fight it out for best animated picture.

white sox heavily in the left handed relief market
caulfield12 replied to Whisox05's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Rodon will likely pitch in a regular rotation with occasional extra days at Charlotte...they won't ever risk him when the weather's iffy or send him back out after rain delays, etc. Whenever he reaches some undefined number with the major league team in August or September...anywhere from 150-175ish IP, depending on how he responds to pitching every five days as opposed to mostly weekends in the ACC...they will shut him down. I don't think they will ever go to that six man rotation in Chicago...unless something happens with Sale again and the White Sox are out of the race but can't totally shut down Chris since they'll need him to pitch 200+ innings when the Sox (hopefully) are competing for the division in 2016. -

QUOTE (LDF @ Nov 17, 2014 -> 12:57 AM) a very good point. I didn't even think of it that way. Unless LaStella's just insurance for a Baez flameout and they want to keep Alcantara in the outfield. -
QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Nov 16, 2014 -> 09:29 PM) Wow I guess I never considered how crowded that Pirates OF is. So our OF trade partners seem to be Pirates, Reds, and Rockies. And the Dodgers, of course. St. Louis was probably going to have to dump Bourjos, but now they might need to keep him.

And then when you do get those guys like Downs or Scott Shields at the tail end of their careers....you're overpaying for career consistency when they're about ready to fall off a cliff from overuse. -
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Nov 16, 2014 -> 07:01 PM) Eh. My wife and I watched this on Friday. It was ok, but I kept reading reviews like yours - one of the better action movies out in recent years, should have gotten more respect. I didn't see it. Entertaining, but nothing earth shattering. IMO it was on par with Oblivion, which again was fine, but not great. Edge of Tomorrow IMO is quite a bit better than Oblivion, unless you happen to have a crush on Olga Kurylenko. Actually, the difference between her performance and Emily Blunt's "bad ass" female action turn are probably 50% of the reason for my Edge of Tomorrow preference. Yes, the "Groundhog Day gimmick" reached the point of exasperation, but then the plot kicked into gear from there and moved forward.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 16, 2014 -> 07:54 PM) The Sox are gonna have a rotation with all lefties, while the Cubs have a lineup with all infielders. As I mentioned in the Alexei thread, I think Castro is getting traded for pitching. Alcantara can play the outfield. It's likely that Bryant or Baez will end up out there. Soler, of course. McKinney, who they acquired from the A's. Sweeney or Coghlan as your 4/5 guys. They might give Junior Lake one more shot.
-
Walker's very solid...when he's healthy. There were some concerns about whether their young SS Jordy Mercer would hold up over a full season, but he ended up being a better hitter than expected.
-
Speculation is he's down to the $3-5 million range plus incentives. I'd prefer to give that deal to Brett Anderson over Johnson and Floyd. Or Zito, haha.
-
Cubs and Rangers are out unless it goes past June or July 15th, the "reset" date.
-
They're unlikely to go after Liriano or Peavy again. You've got Volquez, Hammel, Vogelsong, Masterson, Brett Anderson, Floyd, Josh Johnson that would all be value plays. E. Santana, if they want to pay $10-12 million for three to four years. The argument over Santana has changed a bit since last year, although the odds of adding him with Danks still in the field aren't extremely high. Those guys one year away from fa like price shark and fister could be made available as well between now and midseason. Plus Maeda and Kuroda.

It would be interesting to hear the cigar smoke-filled war room discussion in terms of who was most adamant about signing Abreu. Or the various thoughts about Viciedo Ramirez Tomas and Moncada going forward.
-
Although they would have traded up if cooper was calling all the shots on pitchers.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 14, 2014 -> 07:42 PM) How do you know that? All I heard was he didn't like Kolek. http://voices.suntimes.com/sports/don-coop...raft-prospects/ It was Aiken in the beginning.

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Nov 14, 2014 -> 02:51 PM) I remember bucket saying at the draft that KW wanted Jackson and Hahn wanted Rodon. Obviously, we know who won that decision. I'm sure there are things Hahn defers to, but this is his call in the end I feel. We will know five years from now. Cooper also had his favorites among the first round pitchers...Rodon wasn't #1.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 14, 2014 -> 10:37 AM) What is so intriguing about Greene? He put up a league average ERA+, never had great minor league results. He's largley a two pitch pitcher who throws 90-94 and has meh command. Yes, his ERA looked decent in a rookie campaign but I'm not trading Alexei Ramirez for him. Not even close. Would be pissed as can be if that is all we received. There is no top of the rotation upside in him. The upside in him is a cost controlled #4/#5? Is that really a smart decision to trade Ramirez for? Sounds like Bassit or Petricka.

QUOTE (LDF @ Nov 14, 2014 -> 06:01 AM) you may be right but I don't agree. Murphy is a young prospects, is he rated no, is there a chance he will not make a productive career, yes. yet is this a fair compensation for a AS SS, good glove, nice real nice bat and cost control for 2 yrs with an option of a third. teams play a lot for players who are in the final yr of there contract to help the team out. Alexei will most assuredly be helping the yank while the yanks find a replacement. 2015 and then affordable 2016 club option.
