  1. Don't want to move Ramirez out of his comfort zone. If he was really struggling at this point, it would be okay to move him to leadoff or the 2 hole, but managers and players are very superstitious about that kind of thing.
  2. QUOTE (CWSpalehoseCWS @ May 3, 2014 -> 03:02 PM) Meh, he won't be any better than what the Sox have trotted out there. Wasn't a big fan when the Sox claimed him last year. Didn't they have to work out a minor league trade with the Rays for him? Too many moves going on these days, hard to keep track of them all.
  3. Brian Dozier now with 8 homers. Would have thought it was possibly from Plouffe, but Dozier's really looking like an Uggla in the making.
  4. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 3, 2014 -> 02:14 PM) I think there is a lot of smoke being blown up a lot of asses. I don't think he will still be there, but if he is, I think it is a near lock the Sox take him, as long as he is healthy. And they won't even be able to give him a comprehensive medical exam. All they will have is video, a recent record of pitch counts and theories based on how often he comfortably goes to the slider, and how often.
  5. http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/pro...P=MOISES-SIERRA Probably because they have higher hopes for Sierra than Hernandez. Kind of like flipping a coin with those two, though.
  6. Tanaka still hasn't lost a game the last two years combined in both Japan and the US. Was down 3-0 early but rallied and made it through 7. The one area where he gets hurt (and many do) is elevated fastballs at the 90-92 MPH range without a lot of movement. If there's any single area of disappointment with him, it's the lack of knockout velocity to blow batters away with the type of fastball that Darvish possesses. 2.53 ERA on the season.
  7. QUOTE (fathom @ May 3, 2014 -> 12:42 PM) So who's the back-up outfielder now? Sierra or Hernandez? Doubt they'll got to Tekotte again.
  8. QUOTE (oldsox @ May 3, 2014 -> 01:52 PM) Sox arguably have the worst ML roster, having passed Houston on the way down. The minor league system has to be in the bottum five. Any roster with Sale and Abreu, not to mention Quintana, Ramirez, Viciedo, Dunn, Eaton and A. Garcia isn't close to being the worst roster. Now if you're talking ACTIVE roster, without Sale, Eaton, Garcia, Nate Jones, that's another story altogether. Still would take Abreu + 24 than the Astros.
  9. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ May 3, 2014 -> 11:25 AM) And so what if we had none of those guys? Our organization wouldn't be any worse. You can sign any one of the players you mentioned for cheap in free agency because they are replacement players. You can't sign a potential front-of-the-rotation player like Rodon for cheap in free agency. Well, then you wouldn't have guys like Danish, Beck, Thompson, Jacob May, Semien, Addison Reed, etc. The White Sox aren't deep enough (especially in the pitching department) that you can just assume they'll continue to draft poorly.
  10. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 3, 2014 -> 11:11 AM) David Holmberg was traded for Edwin Jackson. Edwin Jackson was turned into Jason Frasor and Zach Stewart. Jason Frasor was turned into Daniel Webb and Miles Jaye. Except Daniel Hudson was the key player in that trade...granted, it probably couldn't have gotten done with JUST Hudson, but we can't be sure there wasn't another pitcher they would have accepted as a substitute (pick one from the list of 3-4, etc.)
  11. QUOTE (chisoxfan310 @ May 3, 2014 -> 10:29 AM) I read on MLBTR that the A's might be looking to add starters. If we fall out of contention, which is possible with Eaton probably hitting the dl for a while, do you guys think it could make sense to deal Danks to them to clear his salary and bring something in for him? The A's now are paying Jim Johnson $10 mill to pitch in relief and he is a free agent after this season so paying Danks a few extra mill to start after this season doesn't seem like a huge deal to them. He may actually succeed better in that ballpark. Of course, this is all dependent on how we are doing in June/July. What do you guys think? The A's have always been budget-conscious, Johnson notwithstanding. There's no way they take his (Danks') salary obligations on at this point. Until/unless they get a new stadium, they're not going to be in a position to add that type of contract to their payroll.
  12. QUOTE (LDF @ May 3, 2014 -> 10:07 AM) kind of reminds me of he go-go sox. that is why, I fell into the trap by even say if one of the speedy prospects we have, how would they play out in the outfield. which I still like that idea. Micah Johnson would have to go to LF, unless they pair Semien at SS with Micah at 2B. As far as Masterson goes, something like 4 years, $65-75 million with an option for a fifth year.
  13. QUOTE (flavum @ May 3, 2014 -> 10:27 AM) Is it wrong I want Paulino to get torched today? Probably, the more options we have to choose from for the next five months, the better off we are...he's got the stuff, it's not like we are talking Axelrod, Surkamp or Doyle here.
  14. QUOTE (LDF @ May 3, 2014 -> 10:15 AM) isn't there talks of a young south Korean player, I believe a pitcher, who might be a FA...... One is a 3B. http://www.amazinavenue.com/2013/10/27/485...14-suk-min-yoon Here's the pitcher, Suk Min Yoon, with Boras of course representing him.
  15. QUOTE (LDF @ May 3, 2014 -> 10:03 AM) There is always going to be bumps in the road ..... either way this club is exciting again. lets see what comes in July.... too bad cubano can't find out for us, if there is anymore news of other players defecting esp pitchers. The best two current talents are outfielders, Cepeda (in Japan now, and 34 already) and Despaigne, who may or may not, depending on what you read, be going back to Mexico again to play in their professional league but not available to sign from all current conjecture. With the disasters that are Concepcion (Cubs LHP) and then Miguel Gonzalez' contract getting partially avoided with the Phillies, the more likely sources for pitching are Korea and Japan at the moment.
  16. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 3, 2014 -> 09:57 AM) Again according to this thread, the say the White Sox don't have the right to make him offers before the draft. It shouldn't matter what the offer is if they're not allowed to make any sort of offer. It doesn't matter what they announce, any announcement would be an announcement of them breaking the rules. Whether you rob the bank by sticking a gun at the teller or by blowing up the wall of the safe, it's still something you don't want to brag about. So it's simply another version of "insider trading," just don't get caught or put yourself in a position where someone else can prove you've done it beyond a reasonable doubt.
  17. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ May 2, 2014 -> 01:39 PM) I really dont see how you could deduce that, these guys are trying to get good paychecks. Goodwill is far overstated Although it seemingly entered into the Peavy contract he signed with the White Sox...at least to an extent. Different circumstances entirely with Dunn, though.
  18. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 3, 2014 -> 09:09 AM) Because it seems there's a rule saying you're not allowed to negotiate with people before the draft, so coming out and saying that or even leaking that is like bragging about how you robbed the bank. If you're going to break the rule, at least shut up about it. There's no rule about not negotiating with your own players. What you're suggesting is more akin to the White Sox coming out and saying that they made Scherzer a $200 million offer right now. That's against the rules and there would be penalties for doing so. Do they have a right to tell the public they offered him a shot at pitching in the majors in 2014 and he turned it down? When you say before the draft, you mean in the weeks leading up to the draft...or in the actual minutes/clock is ticking time in between selections, or both? Essentially, they're going to have to stick with the "we took the best player available and the one we felt was the best fit for our organization both now and in the long-term" PR spin (if it's not Rodon) and deal with the consequences later on down the line when/if it blows up...or the kudos when their selection (Hoffman/Aiken/Kolek) turns out to be vindicated as the right one in retrospect.
  19. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 3, 2014 -> 08:54 AM) Everyone keeps saying this would be against the rules. And besides, the fraction of the fanbase who has heard of any of these guys is Still, I'm sure there's no way the MLBPA could prevent it if a story "on background without specific attribution/sources" came out the next day simply naming "an unidentified source in the White Sox organization." Would they (the player's association) call that reporter in and force him to reveal the source or threaten to sue? How is it any different than Illitch/Dombrowski making public all of the negotiations with Scherzer...simply because he's already "property" of the Tigers' organization, as opposed to a "free agent"?
  20. Dumping Noesi or risking losing him is also silly if they think he's fixable. It's not like there's a long list of potential starters that are waiting in the wings in AA and AAA currently being blocked by his presence on the roster at the moment. If we're arguing that Dylan Axelrod gives us a better chance to win or rest the bullpen...that's not exactly going to be the most compelling argument in the world after how he looked the second half of 2014 when advanced scouting and hitters figured him out (just like they are likely to do with Carroll as well).
  21. Or the other way to deal with this Rodon/Boras issue is this... The day of the draft, make an announcement that in that interval between picks, the White Sox offered him $6 million, 10% over slot...15% over slot, whatever. And it was turned down. That way, at least the fanbase would understand why Hahn wasn't willing to destroy the entire draft for a franchise badly in need of more talent and depth across the board. If Epstein were to make that same gamble (putting all of his eggs into one basket) and Rodon quickly blows out his elbow with the Cubs' entire draft being predicated on him turning out more like Mauer and less like Prior, that would be a tough one to recover from as GM.
  22. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 3, 2014 -> 07:57 AM) It is funny how a three game losing streak changes things. Before the Detroit series, there were threads about adding people at the deadline. Now there are threads about trading veterans. I love Soxtalk, but it is kind of mentally ill at times. Maybe there was a sense before that start Danks had turned some type of corner and was going to be a legit #3 again. Now there has to be a ton of doubt about that, as well as the concept of being able to dump that contract without eating a majority of it. We have to recognize the old Danks might never come back (again)...at least the upper reaches of comfortable velocity at 92-93.
  23. QUOTE (LDF @ May 3, 2014 -> 06:36 AM) furthermore, when Jimenez and Santana signed, who would've thought the sox would generate this much excitement this early. Nobody knew Abreu would be this good, this soon. Or Flowers/Ramirez/Viciedo/Dunn (so far/this early). That said, we've lost Garcia and Eaton's having a heckuva time staying healthy with his all-out/Rowand-esque style of play.
  24. QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ May 3, 2014 -> 06:29 AM) Hmmm, and he's Cuban. I hope he's ours at 1-3. Rodon has received some mixed reviews so far this spring. Though he has racked up outstanding strikeout totals, there are times when he has deterred from the plan at hand and been a little inconsistent. That would explain why he has a 4.20 earned-run average despite having 83 strikeouts, 23 walks, and with teams only hitting him at a .189 clip. From the standpoint of N.C. State coach Elliott Avent, there's a good and logical reason why Rodon has been up and down at times. "Here's what we think. Carlos threw 114 2/3 innings last year, then he went off to play at Team USA. You can't turn down Team USA when you have a chance to play in Cuba, where his family heritage is from," Avent said. "With that said, we had the full intention to shut him down last summer, but he ended up with Team USA. "Because of his stint with Team USA, we needed to shut him down in the fall. And possibly, if we had to do it again, we wouldn't have done that. We would've gotten him going a little earlier," he continued. "His arm wasn't in as good of shape entering the season. And on top of that, the weather up here has been brutally cold for the most part. Now, it's getting warmer and he's starting to be him again." Rodon was on display last Friday when the Wolfpack played host to hard-hitting Virginia Tech. Though Rodon finished the game allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits in 5 2/3 innings of work, there's no doubt he showed flashes of greatness with elite stuff. Rodon was consistently 91-94 with his fastball, but also dipped down to 88-89 with that pitch some innings. The talented left-hander was still touching 94 on my radar gun when he left the game in the sixth inning. Otherwise, Rodon was consistently 83-85 with a sometimes very sharp slider, while he also threw a few 77-80 changeups. Rodon, at least not yet, may not be to the level he was as a freshman last season. However, it's also true that his so-called intense struggles are greatly exaggerated. http://www.perfectgame.org/Articles/View.aspx?article=8271
