QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Mar 31, 2014 -> 09:30 PM) Great win today. Watched the game with my dog lol. Sale, Abreu, Eaton, Gillaspie, and De Aza were great today. Nitpicking negatives: Avi and Semein pitch selection. Alexei did look slow at SS today. First game of the year though Will Ramirez ever have a great April/May? Semien got suckered by a veteran pitcher into rolling over on that DP ball...didn't kill us, thankfully. And obviously, we've got to do a better job with instructing young players how to bunt. Have we ever developed a young hitter who had a clue how to do it? Getz, maybe.

QUOTE (oldsox @ Mar 31, 2014 -> 07:40 PM) Abreu hit that double to right so freaking hard.....the right fielder was handcuffed, confused, etc. Abreu is the real deal. For all the slider speed bat comments, he's been remarkably quick to the ball. The single he hit, he was able to quickly pull his hands and drop the head of the bat to make solid contact instead of rolling over the top of it...and pulling it weakly on the ground, like Semien did in the bottom of the 1st.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Mar 31, 2014 -> 08:06 PM) It's a good sign for the organization that a guy who logged 37.1 innings for the major league club over the last two years is no longer good enough to make their AAA team. Or Heath. Or that lefty who gave up the bomb against Adrian Gonzalez in late 2012...can't remember his name now. Think he was injured last season. Or Purcey, although his stats were actually quite decent in an Ehren Wasserman type of way...

QUOTE (bmags @ Mar 31, 2014 -> 07:34 PM) Hated missing this game. Pass along any eaton highlights or the Abreu double. Hawk sounded like he was in a great mood. "I tell ya Stone Pony, this is the most exciting and athletic young White Sox team since the late 90's...Abreu's going to win multiple MVP's and Eaton will make everyone forget about Scotty Pods."

QUOTE (Brian @ Mar 31, 2014 -> 04:47 PM) Im any watch the premiere since it'll be on Monday when nothing else is on but no high hopes for it. The new show that debuts after HIMYM tonight looks brutal. Brooklyn Decker's rack can only hold a show for so long. 5-10 minutes, unless she's running around like the Percy Jackson/Lightning Thief girl in True Detective with them unharnessed. I couldn't stand her in that Adam Sandler comedy...or Battleship. Wanted to mute anything she said. I'm not sure who is worse at acting, her or Taylor Swift or Lady Gaga.

QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Mar 31, 2014 -> 03:46 PM) I was saying the Twins could take Jackson to pair with Buxton. The Cubs are going pitching all the way at four. Well, they think they have a keeper in Hicks, although he only hit .192 last year, he showed flashes offensively and defensively. Probably too big of a jump for him.

QUOTE (CyAcosta41 @ Mar 31, 2014 -> 11:49 AM) Straw man argument, man. I never suggested otherwise. IF Rodon at #3 is the proverbial BPA, then you take him. Without a doubt. But that wasn't my hypothetical. IF Rodon at #3 is plus or minus considered the same tier of prospect with two or three other guys, then all sorts of factors enter into what breaks the tie, one certainly being any "baggage" that he comes with. It's nice macho chest-thumping and all to say, screw Boras, I'm not scared of him, but disregard of history and practices is negligence per se. He's baggage and I'm certain that attorney/owner JR considers him just that. Deal with him if he's representing our guy, but consider his involvement a negative when breaking ties. Obviously, just my opinion, but Boras is as much of a known quantity as anything in baseball. Please post more often.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 31, 2014 -> 12:43 PM) I'm expecting it now for a lot of these guys and I'll be more than willing to accept the "they're a bunch of rookies" excuse. But with Viciedo...we really do need to see progress in LF. He's been there long enough now that "initial struggles" ought to be overcome and if he's going to be a tolerable LF, he ought to start showing it. If it's a strict platoon, your question might only be partially answered this year. Maybe Hahn would like to keep both for 2015, and split up playing time in OF and DH among the four of those guys and the best hitting infielder on the bench.

QUOTE (CWSpalehoseCWS @ Mar 31, 2014 -> 05:26 PM) Damn, I don't know why, but I always liked Omogrosso, despite how bad/mediocre he was. Must have been his name/nickname. Hope Captain Omo gets a shot somewhere. He had a great arm before all of his injuries.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Mar 31, 2014 -> 04:49 PM) Raaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh Gillaspie batting 3rd aaaaaannnnnngeeeeeeeer de aza starting aaaaaaaaug Oh wait, they won It would be pretty funny if both DeAza and Viciedo ended up staying on the roster in 2015 and splitting DH/LF duties. With the dearth of free agency options, it's actually a possibility if DeAza can relax hitting down in the order. Semien had a couple of bad at-bats but then almost took one out and seemed okay defensively for at least this one game.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 31, 2014 -> 12:23 PM) There are definitely interesting ways to make it work, but until we see some of these guys this year it's hard to know what the needs will be next year. Viciedo could get stuck in a part time role and be terrible at it, never catch his yearly 2 week hot streak, and wind up with a .600 OPS at the end of the season for all we know. Predictions which are equally likely to happen as that 1) you and "M" will be best board friends by the end of the year...with a mutual admiration society. 2) You will still have numerous opportunities to complain about defense and fundamentals not improving from 2013.

QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Mar 31, 2014 -> 11:26 AM) I agree we should be more concerned with that, but the media will make a much bigger deal of a Cubs success and Sox flop than they will care anything about what the Twins do. It would also make Cubs fans even more unbearable. The Twins are probably sitting pretty good with their choice of Jackson, Grant Holmes, and the pitcher that slips to them. I think Jackson would be the favorite as he would give them two potential stud OF's, and it seems they have been targeting the best prep player available at their pick the last few drafts. If Bryant ends up in LF, that would give them 3 with Almora and the pick. Four, with Soler. Assuming he (Bryant) stays at 3B, unless Olt has a HUGE breakout season. Guess anything's possible.

QUOTE (beautox @ Mar 31, 2014 -> 02:15 AM) Seeing how Hahn is running this ship now, I think we'll be fine with regards to Boras. Hahn has dealt with him extensivley and they're not going to "cheap out" If Rodon falls to us at three I'm sure RH will do everything to make sure we land our top 3 pick. A future of Sale Johnson Quintana Danish Rodon looks like a recipe for a 6 year window to compete at the top of the league. It's way too early to project Erik Johnson as a 2. Most would be pretty happy with a 3/4 guy. And no idea if Danish can stick as a starter quite yet. And, of course, there's always the issue of John Danks to consider going forward.

Sprint is acquiring spectrum and customers from U.S. Cellular in Chicago and other markets, and is not purchasing or involved in its marketing rights or initiatives, said Sprint spokesman Scott M. Sloat. The name U.S. Cellular Field was brokered by U.S. Cellular's former CEO John "Jack" Rooney, who signed the 23-year deal in 2003 for $68 million. Rooney, a Wheaton resident at the time, died in July 2011 at age 69. So will Sprint consider changing the name of the ballpark in the future? "All I can tell you is it isn't part of this transaction," Sloat said. Dave Kimbell, senior vice president of marketing and chief marketing officer of U.S. Cellular, confirmed that "the Cell" likely will continue. "At U.S. Cellular, we are proud of our partnership with the Chicago White Sox and the experience fans have at U.S. Cellular Field," said Kimbell. "We will continue to be headquartered here in Chicago and our enthusiasm for Chicago sports remains the same. Our naming rights to the ballpark are not a part of this deal with Sprint. The White Sox are a great partner and we look forward to continuing our relationship with them." White Sox spokesman Lou Hernandez also confirmed there are no plans to change the name of the ballpark. Sprint, the third-largest U.S. cellphone carrier, said Wednesday it's buying the spectrum and 585,000 customers in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri and Ohio. That's about 10 percent of U.S. Cellular's customer base. U.S. Cellular said 980 jobs will be lost with the sale, including about 640 in the Chicago region. Sprint isn't taking over any employees. U.S. Cellular's headquarters will stay in Chicago. The company's remaining network spans states that include Wisconsin, Iowa, Oregon, Maine and North Carolina. from the arlington daily herald, about 1 1/2 years ago when the Sprint/Nextel deal became official from southsidesox U.S. Cellular, of course, may be telling the truth and really does intend to keep the naming rights. But having a stadium with a company's name in a location where it does not sell to consumers, in addition to being required to purchase advertising in a location where it does not sell to consumers, is a questionable business practice. While it is not entirely clear what sort of consumer/business operations U.S. Cellular will continue in the Chicago-area (if any), it would be usual for a deal such as this to include some restrictions on it, given that Sprint is attempting to gain market share in these markets and U.S. Cellular continuing substantial operations would run contrary to that purpose. Furthermore, it is likely that its naming rights deal with the White Sox contains extensive restrictions on U.S. Cellular's ability to transfer those rights to another company, even in a sale of assets such as this, and it is unlikely the White Sox would have been informed of the deal with Sprint prior to its announcement today. So, despite its protestations to the contrary, U.S. Cellular's commitment to the White Sox should rightly be questioned.

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Mar 30, 2014 -> 10:38 PM) Alexei is now one of the elder statesmen. How long do you think he'll be around ? Alexei is 10 yrs. older than some of these guys. Until the end of his contract if Semien can't play big league SS.

QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ Mar 30, 2014 -> 10:06 PM) You don't draft a guy because he can make it to the bigs quickly, you always draft the best player available. I agree with everyone saying that the team needs to draft a stud with this pick, but in the unlikely scenario that the team can not sign its pick the blow is not that bad because the team is guaranteed the fourth overall selection in next years draft (To go along with what I am hoping is another top ten pick). If Rodon is there at 3 I think the team will draft him but all the college pitchers who were supposed to leading this draft class are putting up average numbers. Keith Law (Who is warming up to the Rick Han Regime) has Rodon ranked as the number 3 overall prospect in the draft behind Brady Aiken and Tyler Kolek. I am hoping that the Sox draft Alex Jackson or Tyler Kolek, who I believe are the two best players in the draft class. Jackson is a STUD, he has finally made the move from catcher to the outfield which will allow him the opportunity to advance more quickly through the minors, plus his hit and power tools grade out to be at least a 6 to go along with his elite bat speed. Alex Jackson could be the most elite offensive prospect in the Sox farm system since Frank Thomas and that excites me. On the other hand you could be looking at the next great power pitcher to hit the scene in Tyler Kolek, who can hit triple digits with regularity and longevity thanks to his 6'6 and 250lbs frame but he also has a plus changeup and slider. If I were Rick Hahn I would be watching those guys very closely. For the same reasons the White Sox drafted Ventura, Thomas, McDowell and Alex Fernandez. If this Jackson kid was/is a legit catching prospect, then I would seriously consider drafting him, because that hit tool would get him to the big leagues faster at that position than any other.

Sox need a collegiate pitcher or hitter who can contribute as early as 2016 for the rebuilding timeline to come into fruition. High school hitters are going to be off the table...especially after what has happened with Hawkins. Hahn's not going to spend Scherzer/Shields/Masterson money for a top of the rotation veteran, so that means draft or trade, and we don't have the pieces right now in our minor league system for that type of move.

Then there's $68 million/20 years for US Cellular naming rights, or $3.4 million per season. So then there's a big question what happens with that 20 year contract...(ALMOST ENOUGH TO PAY FOR MANNY RAMIREZ!!!)
