8/25 Mariners at White Sox

Finally. 42 pitches. Still a game...for now. Audition time to replace Floyd/Quintana in the rotation for Humber and Hector. Floyd better not lay another egg tomorrow. -

Guess Ventura is going to go with Humber over Santiago. Four walks now. Game in danger of getting out of hand here. Only pitch he can get over is the fastball. -

Finally reached the 3.00 ERA mark just now. Pretty amazing he held it down in the 2's for almost his entire rookie season. Now the big question is will he go Humber 2012...what will KW have in Quintana next year? -

Farmer and DJ throwing out the innings pitched rationale for his poor performance tonight. Seems to be feeling the pennant race now, and struggling with his command, which has been his calling card for most of the season, pounding the strike zone and getting ahead of hitters. Almost 30 pitches, numerous 3-2 counts...doesn't have the type of stuff to get K's like Liriano does. In a way, that's been Danks' problem as well since 2008. -

That's one reason Liriano would start over Quintana in the playoffs. You can't have the first baserunner reach like that, just forgot about his responsibility there. -
I doubt Cooper, Ventura and KW would go with Quintana over Liriano, however. Liriano has only been bad once in 5 starts. The team is 4-1 when he goes to the bump. There's also the added factor of the innings pitched issue with Quintana...why push him harder than he's ever been pushed in his entire professional baseball career when you have Liriano with playoff experience? Liriano and Sale can get K's when they need them. That's very important in close playoff games with runners in scoring position and less than 2 outs.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Aug 24, 2012 -> 11:48 PM) Interesting that the Sox moved Sanchez to SS and Kevin Towers said that they will likely replace Drew via the trade market. Given the right circumstances there's no doubt that I think the Sox would offload Ramirez' contract on someone. Sigh.

That and the fact that Veal's not used to facing too many RH hitters. -

QUOTE (Jake @ Aug 24, 2012 -> 09:51 PM) Wise was on second base. Yeah, I know. He tags up and scores all the way from 2nd because both outfielders were down and Ackley was nowhere close to being able to retrieve the ball, turn around and throw it with all of his momentum going away from the play. It would have been a relay throw. No way he makes a throw to the plate from deep RCF in that situation. -

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 24, 2012 -> 09:48 PM) DJ supposedly thought that Wedge was arguing that PK passed Youk on the bases. However, according to this article I found, Wise would still be allowed to score even if that happened as PK would be called out for out #2. http://content.usatoday.com/communities/da.../1#.UDhKydZlSOg But then that would make the argument it was actually a catch relevant again, because the out on the basepaths and the catch being the 2nd/3rd out. Didn't even pay attention to what was going on with anyone besides Wise at 2nd, though. Very smart observation by Wedge there...he never has been in that "intellectual" category of managers like Scioscia, LaRussa, Maddon, etc. -

QUOTE (Paint it Black @ Aug 24, 2012 -> 09:46 PM) Ugh the White Sox fandom collective butthurt over Keith Law is getting old and really embarrassing. I for one am shocked that a man, who's job it is to offer opinions on projecting players is wrong every once in a while. Seriously sox fans, if you want to drink the farm system kool aid, there are places for that. Don't get upset when the adults tell you things you don't want to hear. So is the vendetta by Law against a single franchise (see Joe Cowley versus Toronto/Canada) simply because of bitterness about the Mike Sirotka deal and hate/dislike for KW. Both are probably equally bad. But he's paid to give a professional opinion...and his opinion is obviously colored and biased. Sox message boards are ruled by emotion/s and sometimes reason, but you can't compare the two forms of media. -

QUOTE (Paint it Black @ Aug 24, 2012 -> 09:43 PM) Except all the guys you named (minus Carter) were quite a long time ago. Only because they went ALL the way back to Durham and 1990 and skipped the late 90's for some reason. -
QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 24, 2012 -> 09:41 PM) Give credit to the Sox hitters though, as the Mariners closer has great stuff and they were all over him tonight. Yep, normally you expect Gordon Beckham to get wiped out and then you're just left counting outs left. He's really responded again the last week or so. And then the walk to Wise, you feel the game's over for the Sox, just surprised it didn't happen on the Dunn swing to the wall.

They were fine until the Robinson double. Then panic set in...and you just felt it slipping away. 3 walks in that inning, or was it just 2? At any rate, WAY too many. -
Nightmares of that September game in 2005 they were leading the Royals by 7 or 8 runs....wake up the next morning, they lost and then you're really starting to become convinced they might actually choke away a 15 game lead somehow. Thank God for David Riske and Joe Crede.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 24, 2012 -> 09:34 PM) I just dont think Humber has earned the trust this season to get the benefit of the doubt after he gives up a homer and then a walk. I'm most disappointed in reed and the pitch calling. He was killing the Yankees with the straight change and he tries to blow away Jaso with three straight fastballs. Mind boggling Which is all on AJ. Chris Sale said in an interview he's never shaken off Pierzynski his entire Sox career. Kind of doubt Reed would be making his own choices on pitch selection, either. Addison Reed=Grant Balfour -

It really doesn't matter. Nobody but Ackley had a chance to throw out Wise. As long as Wise had tagged, he obviously scores, catch or non-catch. But an interesting rules debate, nevertheless. -

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 24, 2012 -> 09:27 PM) Read the rulebook statement I posted. Not a catch. How much time is simultaneously or immediately following? It's a judgement call, still. It happened so fast in real time, but if you slow it down on a video....could go either way. Just like in the NFL, if the RF was a wide receiver and he held the ball that long and then got hit, would it be a fumble or an incompletion? -

QUOTE (chw42 @ Aug 24, 2012 -> 09:21 PM) Okay, they definitely won't win this protest. He had that ball in his glove for a good 2-3 steps before the collision (just watched the replay 2-3 times). It won't be overturned, but it was a catch IMO. DEPENDS on the definition of "immediately following." Two or three strides with the ball, to me, isn't immediately following or simultaneously. -

QUOTE (chw42 @ Aug 24, 2012 -> 09:21 PM) Okay, they definitely won't win this protest. When has ANY team in baseball ever had a protest upheld and the results of a previous game overturned? -

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 24, 2012 -> 09:20 PM) I would have let Veal face their 1-2-3 (assuming Wells wasn't used to ph) So if Casper Wells PH, who would you have used? Crain? -

QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 24, 2012 -> 09:18 PM) Was Reed even warm? Talk about an overreaction to take out Humber. That walk to Smoak was the key. Caused the overreaction by pulling Humber, then putting Veal in a situation he's not accustomed to (getting out righties). That hook that was barely high gets a strike call and we didn't all have to suffer heart palpitations. -

Reed with the most ridiculous victory in the season. Poor Jake...can't blame him for not wanting to stick around next year with how consistently our bullpen and offense has screwed him over this year. And Wilhelmsen was great for most of this year. Inexplicable. That's why baseball is so great....it's like ABC's Wide World of Sports with Jim McKay in the last 10 minutes, thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. -

Can we just make Myers the closer tomorrow please? I don't care if he's 23/27 or whatever, he's never going to survive against the Tigers down the stretch.
