Rays (51-42) @ White Sox (48-44) 7:11pm CSN-HD
AJ at .301, 782 OPS. This White Sox line-up the most consistent offensively over the last month of any Sox team since he has arrived, according to Greg Walker. Now does Getz bunt here with Beckham coming up next? With BA batting, you wouldn't risk the intentional walk to get to BA/Wise. That's one key difference in our new line-up with CGQ.

Unlike Javy Vazquez, Clayton Richard has really manned up in this game and solidified his spot in the rotation for now after being called out publicly by Ozzie. Thought 2: Tigers score to take a 9-6 lead in the bottom of the 6th.

Richard still throwing at 94-95 MPH in the fifth. Shaping up into a VERY nice, quiet outing for Clayton.

At least Seattle has scored 5 in a row against the Tiggers to make it interesting, now an 8-6 Tigers lead. Could our two ALCD opponents blow 7 and 10 run leads in back-to-back days?

Niemann's recent pitching undoubtedly has something to do with Ozzie or Pods' decision to bunt Beckham over, although it still wasn't completely warranted. You have to think that with CR on the mound, you'll need more than one run. Only 42 pitches through 4, has faced only two more than the minimum.

Beckham at 804 OPS, over the mythical 800 mark, and at .295 now. Thought two: Niemann is coming off a CG shutout against the A's, and has needed only 34 pitches to record 10 outs tonight.

Pods isn't exactly a Thome-esque pull hitter, but Ozzie keeps calling him a "much better overall player than in 2005," so trust him to get a hit or at least advance the runner by swinging the bat. It wasn't a tie game in the 7th inning or later.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jul 21, 2009 -> 08:00 PM) I will never understand the mentality that says we should let professional hitters, give themselves up just to move a damn runner over. Especially a guy hitting around .305. With BA playing, the score would be 0-0 (I'm assuming he also would have bunted into a DP in the 9th spot after Beckham).

White Sox have led 32 total innings against the Rays this year, the Rays still ONLY 5 now (which is at least one reason to think the White Sox might be capable of getting to the playoffs and doing some damage).

Niemann with a nifty play to deny Alexei what SHOULD have been a run-scoring single to tie it up.

Doubles Machine. Why did Kapler risk an error throwing to 2B?

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jul 21, 2009 -> 07:51 PM) Had to score one to win anyway. Seems that Clayton will go 5 IP and give up 2-3 runs. We need to get something out of Pena or Carrasco in middle relief and stay in the game somehow (hopefully).

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Jul 21, 2009 -> 07:49 PM) Cept it wasn't an error therefore no unearned run. Yes, of COURSE you can't give him an ERROR, but almost every MLB CFer makes that play and the inning's over.

Pretty terrible throw by Quentin apparently...Pods owes Clayton one run scored offensively now.

Once again, sorry, I am in Thailand and no MLB.TV because of slow wireless connection, so I couldn't "see" that AJ was running. :-( Unearned run should go to Richard if the runner at 3B scores (assuming we had an actual MLB CFer).

Brian Anderson or (Rob Mackowiak/Erstad/Swisher/Daubach/Griffey) would have had it...bad jump, bad instincts, what new?

QUOTE (Cali @ Jul 21, 2009 -> 07:40 PM) that curve that Getz swung and missed for strike 2 was SICK...Wow Which does help explain (besides affordability) why the Rays felt justified in dumping Edwin Jackson...so maybe the comparison with Niemann's stuff and Jenks by Maddon isn't totally unfounded after all.

Bartlett (former Piranha instincts kicking in) with perfect positioning against Getz, who was 6 for 15 against TB as the leadoff hitter earlier in the year.

Atta boy AJ, the backhanded Ichiro "serve" into LF, also perfected by Wade Boggs, Gwynn and Luis Polonia.

Quentin moving fairly well in the outfield for now.

WOW, Clayton Richard threw a pitch at 96 MPH, it's impossible, it's against the laws of nature!!! If not for Ben Zobrist's HR against Matt Thornton in Bartolo's start (6th inning), we would be 5-0 against the best team in the AL from last season.(Sorry if that is too much to read or you have an abbreviated attention span).

Niemann hasn't given up one home run to the opposition since May, jinx!
