  1. QUOTE (flavum @ Apr 20, 2012 -> 05:09 PM) Ventura was 15-65 (.231) in his career when the 0-41 started in his last AB 4-18-90. His AB before the 0-41 started was a HR off Clemens. Thanks. So I guess he bottomed out around .142 near the end of April.
  2. QUOTE (MAX @ Apr 20, 2012 -> 05:01 PM) Actually it wasn't robins debut and also it wasn't as bad as people have been lead to believe. Its a myth. I think people attribute the myth to hawk. Shocking. Though I prefer old Robin legends to Dwight Evans or Yaz.
  3. I'm really looking forward to Molina's and Castro's next starts. Who's with me? Molina tonite. Castro Sunday (I'm guessing) for the Barons. These guys could be a big part of the near future and redemption for KW. Or not. Any way to watch said games free online?
  4. QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Apr 20, 2012 -> 04:35 PM) Morel is gonna have to go 0-42 before he's dropped... What was Robin's infamous career starting streak - something like 0 for 41? I know this isn't Morel's MLB debut, but perhaps personal experience will make Robin more patient than most folks around here will be able to stand.
  5. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Apr 17, 2012 -> 08:14 AM) Let him enjoy possibly his last year in Chicago. (barring Theo going after him next year) Obviously no way we bring him back at $22M for '13, but I see another possibility. Jake has talked about and acted like he feels "guilty" for not performing better for the Sox for the money he's made in his time here. I see a Kerry Wood-like Hometown Discount in our future. We'll see.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 15, 2012 -> 09:02 AM) It is pretty awesome when you consider he was supposed to be out of the game like 10 years ago because of his hip. Was watching one of the Cleveland games the other day on the Extra Innings package and the Tribe announcers were praising Konerko's career accomplishments while noting that he never "legs out" a hit and that pretty much all of his hits need to reach the outfield becuase he's so darn slow - this increased their praise, while making them wonder what his numbers would be if he had even average speed. It's a good point. I'll take it a small step further. I've noticed that over the past three seasons or so infielders have realized just HOW slow Paulie is, and are making more and more "spectacular" plays against him. It's been crazy how often balls off Paulie's bat are becoming defensive highlights. IMO, it's because the fielders have realized that they merely need to STOP the ball from reaching the outfield - NOT stopping the ball with a mindset to get up quickly and make a throw (as they would with a normal runner), because there's ALWAYS time to make the throw with Paulie "running". This is resulting in less "seeing eye singles" and less hits generally according to this observer. And yet his numbers continue to rock.
  7. QUOTE (black jack @ Apr 14, 2012 -> 08:00 AM) Wait? What?? Game's on CSN not Fox. Hawk and Stone Pony. Sucks being an out-o-towner, been there done that. If it's on CSN, and not FOX, it'll be on the free MLB Extra Innings preview that ends tomorrow here in Colorado. If you have Comcast in your area you should get it too, I believe. Should also be on MLBtv.
  8. QUOTE (sunofgold @ Apr 5, 2012 -> 10:36 AM) Tigers (Verlander) and Indians (Masterson) have their home openers today. Have to be cheering against both the Tigers and Indians today. If they both lose, we will remain in first place! Papa Fata** blows his first save for the Tigs after being perfect last year. Gotta love it! A less-than-charmed season for Valverde is the beginning of what we need to compete this year.
  9. I'd say his gaudy interleague record over 11 years carries a lot more weight than one spring training, but time will tell. I'll go with 17-10, 3.65era. Hoping the Marlins completely suck otherwise.
  10. Very loserish, and seemingly designed to ramp down expectations of winning, as if they weren't low enough already. Hope they didn't pay an agency too much for this gem.
  11. Here's hoping that Mark and his new team have a Steve-Carlton-Phillies-1972-esque season.
  12. I'm a math guy, stats guy, engineer, and I still like (sometimes love) Hawk. I also love Fangraphs, but it's clear that their average reader craves blandness and revels in intellectual superiority. "Polarizing" IS the right word for Hawk, just not among the geek set, apparently.
  13. QUOTE (danman31 @ Jan 27, 2012 -> 02:43 PM) You don't really draft for first basemen. They happen more organically. Even Konerko didn't start there. Generally speaking, the system lacks good hitters. Most of the best ones the Sox have are high upside/high bust rate players with limited success so far. The pitching depth in the system is getting to be pretty good. They have loads of potential future relievers, which is why trading Santos and Frasor was sustainable. There are a handful a potential decent starters as well, but Sale, Danks and Floyd may have to be the anchors of the rotation for a while. If the system is finally able to produce a legit outfielder in a couple of years (Thompson?), I look for Dayan to be manning 1B around that time.
  14. His real name turned out to be Carmen Faustona. Melton was right all along!
  15. Cubano, great to see you back on the board!
  16. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 17, 2012 -> 10:14 PM) But you simply can't measure that "clutch" factor and how many times Martinez has historically come up big in RBI situations... On paper, you can replace him (ala Moneyball theory). But it's just not the same when the opposing pitcher looks at that line-up and sees Martinez not in it. This. Whether "clutch" is measurable/existent or not, several years of the eye test tell me that Miggy will have far less protection this season. If it's Pena or virtually anyone else replacing VMart, the Cabrera pitcharound will be the completely obvious move. We might even see Miggy pressing a bit, eventually, as the lack of protection becomes frustrating. Yes, they have other bats, but none that strike fear ala Martinez. Huge loss for them.
  17. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 17, 2012 -> 01:21 PM) If we don't get a solid overpay for him, there's little to no reason to move him. Agreed. I don't need to see 100 losses to call it a rebuild. Please forgive me, and my short-sightedness.
  18. QUOTE ( @ Jan 15, 2012 -> 09:16 PM) Poignant? Still laughing over this tonight.
  19. QUOTE (Jake @ Jan 13, 2012 -> 03:26 PM) I miss Cubano. +1 cool dude
  20. Slightly bummed that Luke Scott signed with the Rays today. Was hoping that he was on our radar as the last OF/Dunn insurance/LHPH, but I imagine that $5M + incentives was a bit steep for those duties, given our budget. Frankly, I'm a bit surprised he was able to get so much coming off last season, but lefties with power will always get paid, I suppose.
  21. A more accurate list than others I've seen. Saladino, IMO, had been underrated by most of the others, while Mitchell, Walker, etc. tend to be overrated, perhaps by less informed observers going more on their draft position/one-time-ceiling.
  22. JC still doing Ozzie's bidding. What new?
  23. QUOTE (ptatc @ Dec 12, 2011 -> 09:38 PM) The blood testing along with HGH will go a long way towards doing this. Much more difficult to cheat a blood test. Yeah, I was very glad to see that this would be part of the new regimen. One question ptatc, do blood samples maintain their integrity forever, if frozen, or otherwise? Such that if a test is developed down the road for substances that players are getting away with using now, can those earlier samples be tested in the same way as a fresh one? The threat of future pariah status for players that are clever/lucky enough not to get caught during their careers, could be at least a bit of a deterrent for some. Verbiage mandating retroactive testing should be part of the next CBA, if it isn't in the current one. I realize that this is another leap in concessions needed from the union, but most of us, while hoping for it, didn't think the blood/HGH testing would become a reality so soon.
  24. Very disappointing. Can only hope it leads to further calls for testing that has a chance to keep up with the cheating. Still can't trust our beloved game, sadly.
  25. QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Oct 4, 2011 -> 05:02 PM) Rumor has it the Cards wanted him for Rasmus. This would have been a disaster. Rasmus has a good start on Rios v2.0 status, IMO, and will likely soon be regarded as AA's biggest screw-up. Yes, J4L, they ALL make mistakes.
