Geez Viciedo is on fire. Marrero too after slumping upon promotion. Serafin must have a nasty curve tonight. That's a ridiculous amount of Ks for a 5'10" dude.

Minor League Catch-All thread 2009 edition

QUOTE (CSF @ Aug 2, 2009 -> 11:42 AM) Looks like Sergio Santos is on the Barons roster. Fernando Hernandez, Justin Cassel and Matthew Zaleski are also on Charlotte's roster. Poreda and Russell are gone so that explains 2 of those. Nunez's promotion in Richard's roster spot is spot 3. Santos, Johnnie Lowe and Miguel Socolovich moved up to Bham. Charlis Burdie and Daniel Albritton moved up to W-S. I think they have an open roster spot. Their roster is at 24, isn't it 25 down in A ball? Serafin got a well deserved promotion to Kanny. Joining him is Enrique Lechuga. Dylan Axelrod is a catcher that I have no info on, he could be another addition. FS story on the promotions -
New JPNese, taking suggestions for next week...

QUOTE (chisoxfan09 @ Aug 2, 2009 -> 04:38 AM) Danman, think he will make it to the bigs next next? Or at least a ST invite? He has done just about all he can at BHam. I'm really not the best to ask because I haven't seen him, but from a stats/scouting report standpoint there isn't a ton to like. He's 25 and has a poor K rate at Bham despite a damn good OPS. Next year he will be in Charlotte (probably still only in Bham for upcoming playoffs) and will probably get a look in ST. I'm not going to say he can't be a solid bench player in the Majors, but I don't think he can be more than that. He has a good chance to at least get a look in the Majors at some point, unlike David Cook, but he better hit in AAA as soon as he gets there or he will become the next David Cook. Just seems to be the way the org. treats older performers like himself. -
QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Aug 2, 2009 -> 12:16 AM) I love the Fox answer: "Megan Fox....um, yeah.....she's cute." He said Fox was 'pretty cute.' To me that confirms he is a slayer. Only a slayer would be able to regard Megan Fox in such an average fashion. Also, he laughed at dating. A slayer would laugh at dating because slayers don't date women, they slay them. In all seriousness, it's probably embarrassing for Beckham, but it's still funny to me. We turned Quentin into "The Carlos Quentin" on here so we might as well keep running with the Beckham is Slayer thing for sheer entertainment. Beckham can be our Chuck Norris, but only with slaying lol.

QUOTE (chisoxfan09 @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 11:52 PM) JPN, maybe not this next time but a write up on Stefan Gartrell would be nice. He has done very well this year and is ready for AAA IMHO. Hope Viciedo rakes tonight. Ha that's funny. Jason was working on a piece about him, but got sidetracked. It should be coming soon (eventually?). -
QUOTE (dasox24 @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 03:46 AM) But not better than getting to watch Mark's Perfect Game. That was a thing of beauty, and the best day of being a Sox fan for me since Game 4 of the World Series. Perfect game was cool, but division title > perfect game. Especially with the way the Sox won it.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 03:34 AM) Honel never produced outside of A-ball. McCarthy put up Minor League player of the year numbers while cruising through a ton of stops and had a ton of success early in his major league career. Injuries have really been McCarthy's only problem (albeit its a big problem). Honel pre-2004 injury was a damn good prospect. BA had him at 55 in all of baseball. BMac only made 4 starts in AA at the same age (20) Honel had a solid year in Winston-Salem right before his injury in '04. Yes, BMac was a better prospect, but injuries aside (which was Honel's obvious problem) the difference wasn't massive.

Sox Acquire Jake Peavy for Richard, Poreda, Russell, Carter

QUOTE (Soxfest @ Jul 31, 2009 -> 05:01 PM) You got a mouse in your pocket I never said they were cheap, I said they do not always put the money back into the product like they should, 2 different things! You may mean 2 different things, but the words you chose are not that different. QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ Jul 31, 2009 -> 05:06 PM) Think of it as a 27 year old prospect who has just been promoted from AAAA to the Major Leagues. This has to be my favorite assessment of the NL. Absolutely an exaggeration, but I still love it. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 03:15 AM) There I said it, Clayton Richard is a better prospect than Aaron Poreda Agreed. I didn't like what I saw from Poreda. The scouting reports were accurate (plus fastball, poor secondary stuff, mediocre control), but it looked worse than it sounded. That said, Poreda should be an above-average reliever. Maybe he pitches differently (better) as a starter, but who knows. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 03:20 AM) But maybe my source is wrong cause everything I'm reading tonight indicate it was the exact same trade. I swore I saw someone else confirm a while back that Broadway was a part of the trade too. It's reasonable for them to say it was the same trade. No need to have guys worrying about an old trade that didn't happen. I remember the Broadway part too. Some Chicago reporter said that. -
I guess the joking responses have proven the question silly. Fields was still rightfully seen as a possibly solid Major League hitter. The Sox were correct in what they did. Just enjoy next year with a full year of Beckham and a solid core.

QUOTE (flavum @ Jul 30, 2009 -> 07:38 PM) Once the Sox officially fall out of this thing, Contreras should be released, and Hudson should come up. It won't happen, but that's what should happen. Contreras is still useful. No need to rush Hudson. We have a decent core of young players. The 2010 White Sox should be a really good team if Kenny is average this offseason. Full year with Beckham, maybe Getz improves, Richard with more experience and confidence, Quentin healthy. A lot of reasons to think the team gets better next year. Rushing Hudson shouldn't be in the cards unless he dominates in spring training. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jul 30, 2009 -> 08:06 PM) Next year: 1) Mark 2) Gavin 3) Danks 4) Richard 5) Hudson/Poreda/Trade/FA competition That's extremely exciting. Hudson probably won't be up until late in the year or an injury, but that rotation is very encouraging. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 31, 2009 -> 12:19 AM) Brandon McCarthy was 10 times the pitching prospect Honel was. He was a better prospect, but that's quite the exaggeration.
-
I think a couple of the others after Goodwin are decent, but nothing to get excited about if they get signed. I believe Thompson and Chapman are decent talents, but I don't honestly remember.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 12:39 PM) I don't get why people are so high on Jeff Clement, but at the same time I've never gotten the Jack Wilson hype either. Clement isn't a good defensive catcher and he's yet to really do much at the major league level. Last season he struggled greatly in Seattle and while he's put up solid minor league numbers, it is the PCL. Agree on Clement. It's not a bad deal for Seattle, but I really like Snell.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 12:26 PM) So do we have a list of who is left unsigned at this point? 3 (102) – Bryan Morgado, LHP, Tennessee 7 (223) – Justin Jones, LHP, Oakdale Senior HS, CA 15 (463) – Dane Williams, RHP, Archbishop McCarthy HS, FL 17 (523) – Brian Goodwin, CF, Rocky Mount HS, NC 20 (613) – Nathan Reed, LHP, Pittsburgh (Think I read somewhere that he will not be signing) 25 (763) – Mike Strong, LHP, Iowa Western CC 36 (1093) – Ryan Crowley, LHP, Morton West HS, IL 43 (1303) – Tyler Williams, 3B, Chaparral HS, AZ 44 (1333) – Taylor Thompson, RHP, Auburn 46 (1393) – Grant Monroe, RHP, Northwest Florida State CC 47 (1423) – Jordan Yallen, OF, Golden Valley HS, CA 48 (1453) – Matthew Little, LHP, Bryan HS, TX 49 (1483) – Theron Geith, LHP, Scottsdale CC 50 (1513) – Kevin Chapman, LHP, Florida

The fact that Holmberg supposedly already added a bit of velocity on his fastball is a good sign that he could continue to add velocity.
-
QUOTE (Palehosefan @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 12:02 PM) I think that's pretty uncertain at this point. Mitchell hasn't had a ton of time in the OF, but he clearly has the tools to be an above average CF. He has an average arm, and make-up speed. Danks has a plus arm, and average speed for a CF. I think Mitchell in CF and Danks in RF will be our best set of defensive OF, but we will see. Mitchell might be better tools wise for center, but Danks is really good out there. I'd be shocked if Mitchell forces Danks to a corner. Danks won't be going there on his own.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 06:07 PM) There seems to be at least one player a year that fits that description, actually. Timo Perez is an example from 2005. At least we know we can win a World Series with that type of player on the team lol. Sad to see Fields demoted. He has shown more than Anderson so there's a lot more hope there. I'll be mildly surprised if he isn't traded before the deadline though. He may never see AAA.

It wasn't Zook's idea. Northwestern has been throwing this idea out there for a while. Zook just wants Illinois to be the other team. Both sides talked about it during Big Ten media day. They would be replacing the game in Evanston and Ryan Field only holds 47k. Seating isn't a major problem. -
Phegley's problem hasn't been power, that's for sure.

Brian Anderson traded to Red Sox for Mark Kotsay
danman31 replied to Jimmywins1's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (rangercal @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 02:25 PM) That would mean raising his lifetime Batting Average 70-80 points 40-50 is more like it. With his D and passable walk rate this year, 260-270 would be fine from Brian. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 05:48 PM) It's like we acquired my favorite spect/player Jeremy Reed again only alot older now. Yeah, it's funny. After we had all those OF prospects, none of them have turned out. 2 of them (Reed and Sweeney) drew comparisons to Kotsay and the other just got traded for him. I'm actually impressed with what we got back. It's a defense for offense trade, but I'm surprised Anderson brought back a solid bench hitter at all. Fields might go, which is really sad to me. I like Josh (liked Anderson too, but he's not going to become an everyday player) and think he still has some upside. It will be interesting to see what kind of value he has. He could probably bring in another Pena. -
Great Simpsons reference, but a harsh comment on McCulloch. Maybe the bullpen thing will work out for him.
-
QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 03:52 PM) Can someone give me a scouting report / projection on Thompson? FutureSox profile It's a combo of scouting reports from MLB's draft coverage, Baseball America and Sporting News did a story on him that included a hack report.

So bikes aren't safe on sidewalks because they are problematic for walkers, but they are safer on roads where they are problematic for big vehicles that can kill people?
