That's true I suppose. Back in the day there were a lot of Scott Pod type guys in the league. Not so anymore.

QUOTE(Pauly8509CWS @ Jul 13, 2005 -> 12:12 AM) Its tough to use a player with out any offensive production in an all-star game. OBP doesnt mean much to the managers. Wow, that's a naive statement.

QUOTE(whitesoxmanager @ Jul 12, 2005 -> 11:00 PM) wasn't pissed actually voted like a mother too but didn't want some freak injury...as it was he got in the game...i think that Francona was going to pinch run in the 8th if a man wouldve reached and didn't happen..got to play the field managed perfectly except wouldve come immediately with MRivera If an OFer was one of the 4 guys to bat that inning then, yeah, you'd have been right. However it didn't work out that way and he was on deck if Pudge was to reach against Cordero. I really wanted him to steal in the game, oh well. Am I upset he didn't get to? Yeah. The point remains that he was the last guy voted in, so if anybody on the team shouldn't touch the ball, it's him. Francona did his best to get everybody in and Scott Pods at least played.

I thought of the Patterson comparison at first. Then I realized that Young draws too many walks to be compared to Patterson. Thus the Cameron comparisons.

QUOTE(WHITESOXRANDY @ Jul 12, 2005 -> 12:04 PM) An outfield of Anderson, Pods and Rowand would be the least productive outield, offensively, in baseball. There would be not even 1 big hitter in your outfield. It would be tough to win with that. As it is right now, even with Dye pounding the ball, th outfield production is below par. Who cares where your offense is coming from as long as it is coming?

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jul 11, 2005 -> 11:10 PM) I'm sure Dan will love my topic description on Micah. It's a load of crap is what it is. Long live Josh Fields.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jul 11, 2005 -> 05:31 PM) Miller was injured for part of the year IIRC and he's just gotten back on the mound. I think he was 1-0 or something in High A. Yep. He rehabbed in rookie ball but is back with Kinston. I'm pretty sure that was his 2nd start.

QUOTE(WHITESOXRANDY @ Jul 11, 2005 -> 01:40 PM) Anderson will not be starting next year. The Sox could only break him in if they still had Lee and Ordonez. If he's on the team, he'll be the 4th outfielder. I just don't get that comment. What does no longer having Maggs and Lee have to do with breaking in Anderson? If Anderson is up, he won't be a 4th OFer. Look at the Cubs failed Jason Dubois experiment. He couldn't get enough at-bats so the Cubs sent him down to get more. Anderson will either be a starter in the bigs or AAA. He won't be a 4th OFer. Aaron Rowand is proof that limited at-bats is not the way to bring a young hitter up to the bigs.

For those who were confused as I was at first, the spoken article is here (free username required). I think it's an easy statement to say that one outfield prospect will get traded since we have quite a few. As Cheat has said, Young's ability seems unknown because he could go anywhere from flop to superstar. With more time (next season) we should have a better idea of which he is more likely to be. With Anderson we know what we are getting, and he's close to the bigs. Sweeney is a bit of an unknown because the production hasn't matched the talent. Everybody who's seen Sweeney loves him. I went to a few games in 2004 Spring Training and one of the games we met up with a group of guys that had been going to games for the past couple weeks. Everyone of them said Sweeney is going to be a star someday. They all loved him. Of course of the two games I saw Sweeney had 1 at bat, a routine groundball. I don't want to trade Young now because of the uncertainty. Between Anderson and Sweeney it's close, but I'd rather see Sweeney dealt. Sweeney would probably get more value in return because of his talent while Anderson is more likely to make it in the bigs. Of course I'd rather see two or three 2nd tier guys go instead of any of those three. I wouldn't mind seeing Gio traded (durability concerns) or a combo of Rogo and Owens if that carries much value.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jul 10, 2005 -> 11:45 PM) The best 3rd base prospect in the org also hit his 11th hr (Micah Schnurstein) for WS and is starting to develop his power stroke a bit more. Mark my words and I've been saying it a long time but Schnur has the ability to be a total double/hr machine. I just absolutely love his swing. Hell Wes even threw a good game (6 shutout innings for WS) which is a total shock. I don't know what you see in Schnur. I think I'm one of few to still be a supporter of Fields. I think he's going to be good. From the time we drafted him we knew what we were getting (relatively raw, a lot of power, a lot of strikeouts, below average defense). He's had one bad month and he's improved since (even won a hitter of the week recently). He might just be another Joe Borchard though, which is probably why Sox fans are hesitant to get excited about Fields. Whisler was hurt. Unless he struggles for a longer period of time I'm going to assume that his struggles were due to his injury. Rustiness followed by a lack of confidence. He had a 3.37 ERA for the Hogs last year in 5 starts and a 2.73 ERA through May (7 games, 3 starts) this year before slumping in June. I don't see how a guy can just magically go from that good against a league for a pretty decent period of time to completely sucking against that same level so quickly. It's possible they brought him back too early and he started to feel soreness or whatever once they began to stretch him out again. He had one fully stretched out outing since coming back from the injury. He went 7 innings giving up 1 run (unearned). Then he goes onto get rocked in 6 straight starts. Maybe he was feeling sore once they stretched him out and his injury was flaring up again and he couldn't pitch well. Then maybe he's feeling better, but has no confidence. The last 2 of his 6 bad starts were much better than the first 4 (5 innings 5 er in both, sadly a huge improvement). Long winded way of saying a lot of people have given up on him way too quickly.

QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 10, 2005 -> 05:10 PM) We're kidding ourselves if we think it will be a cake-walk to win the AL Central. We're going to have to play better than we have the last two weeks or so if we want to win the division. What 7-5 isn't good enough for you? The Sox are 7-7 in their last 14, but that was also following an 8 game win streak. I'm not worried. There's no reason to get upset. The A's own us. Scratch those from the record. If the Sox play .500 the rest of the game they'll still win 95 games. That will almost definitely get us into the playoffs. On their current pace the Twins will win 90 and the Indians 87. Let's say the Twins play .600 ball the rest of the way, that puts them at 95 wins. So the Sox only have to play a little better than .500 ball the rest of the way and they should win the division. Don't worry, the Sox are better than a .500 team. They'll probably win 100 or so. Basically worst case scenario for the Sox and best case scenario for the Twins has it as a close race, I see no reason to assume either will happen.

Young to face Yusmeiro Petit of the Mets. First pitch strike looking. Foul off to the right side. Pop up to 2nd baseman. Well that at-bat sucked.

Flyout to Chris Young on 2nd play of game. Announcer talks about how he has good range on defense and mentioned some good comments from Razor Shines. Next batter, Kendry Morales, crushes one over Young's head. Slightly misjudged but he had no play anyway.
