QUOTE (RME JICO @ May 5, 2009 -> 07:10 AM) Would we be seeing any of these players if Getz, Anderson, Thome, Fields, and Dye didn't miss any time? Those 5 with Quentin, Konerko, AJ, and Ramirez make up a pretty decent lineup. Get that reason, logic, and sense out of here.

So who's gonna start the "WAS IT OVER WHEN THE GERMANS BOMBED PEARL HARBOR???" thread?

QUOTE (rangercal @ May 4, 2009 -> 04:01 PM) Noah is the 2nd most important player on the roster. No way is he "blech" to me. Tyrus on the other hand... I am starting to have my doubts. Tyrus has all the talent in the world, and he's really been working hard on his shooting and come a long way, but he's got a ridiculously low basketball IQ.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 4, 2009 -> 06:50 PM) Is it me or does Hawk indeed start calling players by their last name more when they are struggling and by their first name or nickname when they are going well? He also calls them by their jersey number, haven't quite figured that one out yet.

QUOTE (vandy125 @ May 4, 2009 -> 03:12 PM) I usually find it annoying when I am talking with someone and their phone rings or they get a text and they answer it. Seriously, I'm standing right in front of you, what makes that person so much more important? They haven't even taken the time to meet you, why do they take priority? Call them back later, or excuse yourself then go and talk to them if you really think it is important. I get annoyed when I'm on the phone with someone and they keep interrupting to talk to people in the background. My mom is probably the worst violator of this.

QUOTE (fathom @ May 4, 2009 -> 02:12 PM) Agreed, one bad start. His game against Tampa was the best 5 innings, 5 run outing you'll ever see. He's thrown the ball infinitely better than Gavin has so far this year. One really, really bad start.

I'm always on my phone, but I'm not a jackass about it. I'm on the phone all the time because I'm on the internet all the time, and now i can get on the internet on my phone, so it's just logical. For an example of jackassery, see all of the people in Congress that were twittering while the president was giving his joint address. Just no.

Podsednik/Nix Recalled, Anderson to DL, Owens Demoted
lostfan replied to chisox2334's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Chet Lemon @ May 2, 2009 -> 05:20 PM) Why would Ozzie believe that Nix is better offensively vs. lefties than Getz when Nix is 0-17 w/ three walks against lefties in his extremely short MLB career. Because Ozzie is often a jackass. -
QUOTE (Ron @ May 4, 2009 -> 01:37 PM) The 2000 NBA Draft was much worse, IMHO. Good to have someone else on the T-Will bandwagon. Marcus Fizer, lol... oh my god. It's hard to fault Krause for whiffing on that class when you look at the rest of the players.

Stacey King is hilarious.

QUOTE (BearSox @ May 4, 2009 -> 01:03 PM) Still, no one knows when we will find an alternative fuel source, and like you said, wouldn't it be better if we didn't have to rely on other countries for such important resources? We still are going to no matter what since it's a global market, the question is how much and for how long.

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ May 4, 2009 -> 11:36 AM) Disagree. Morgan is a very knowledgable baseball guy and just expressing his opinion And he has some of the dumbest opinions I've ever heard - listen to him the next time he starts talking about stats, he makes zero sense. I lol'd last night when they showed the stats of all the guys who have batted leadoff, and Getz was well over .300 in the most games, but Morgan said he liked Wise because Wise brings "speed to the top of the lineup." Of course, Wise was batting .000 at the leadoff spot, but this was lost on Morgan.
-
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 4, 2009 -> 11:54 AM) Part of the picture of who goes into the HOF is their total effect on the game - going beyond stats, and beyond their results. Personality, and how they may have changed the game, are also factored in. Nolan Ryan was a huge presence during his career. He was my favorite pitcher growing up (I'm 27).

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ May 4, 2009 -> 12:05 PM) I hate religious zealots. It doesn't even take a non-religious person to immediately identify about 7 or 8 things wrong with that.

Stuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuupiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiid. Staggeringly, appallingly, and embarrassingly stupid.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 4, 2009 -> 11:43 AM) Different societies handle things differently though. Just because Portugal saw rates go down doesn't mean that in the U.S. case they might not go up...especially if the market develops in certain ways. The article says that too.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 4, 2009 -> 11:37 AM) The problem is your opening assumption. People don't avoid heroin because its illegal; people avoid heroin because something in their brain says "hey, injecting myself is probably a bad idea." Usage rates do not go up when drugs are decriminalized or made legal. How many people on Soxtalk avoid using coke or meth only because its illegal? So you get all the benefits you listed with negligible costs. The Time article I posted a few posts back basically says that. Decriminalizing drugs in Portugal has made usage go down, not up.
-
Since we're on the subject, Time did a really good article last week about the effects on decriminalization of all drugs in Portugal. Not too long of a read, well worth your time (no pun intended). http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,...1893946,00.html

QUOTE (fathom @ May 4, 2009 -> 08:04 AM) All of baseball knows he's more of an offensive player than a defensive player. Our offense is in a huge funk, and he's easily one of our 5 best offensive players. If you're not going to play him against Greinke, then it's really just a waste of a roster spot. Go get someone who can play 1B better defensively and/or hit LHP better if you're not comfortable playing him at 3B. Hopefully Nix can look competent at the plate against a RHP. I think Konerko was in the lineup as the DH last night right? And Betemit was playing 1B... that doesn't make much sense to me. Why couldn't Betemit DH if Thome was sitting (whether Thome should have been sitting is another discussion entirely)?

QUOTE (Texsox @ May 4, 2009 -> 07:41 AM) What is impractical is deciding everything on knowledge from 200+ years ago and NOT taking into account what is in our best interest as a nation. There is no way the men who sat around and wrote the Constitution could foresee everything the Constitution would be called upon to solve. So it takes people, not machines, who can think and use their knowledge, to interpret. What I was trying to say is the decisions are usually about what is *not* obvious in the Constitution. If it was spelled out in black letter law, it would usually never get to the Supreme Court. So to suggest that the Justices should not think, just look at the law and tell us what it says, is impractical. This much I agree with, because if it wasn't true, we wouldn't even have a Supreme Court.
-
QUOTE (Texsox @ May 4, 2009 -> 07:32 AM) Which is impractical in today's society. The framers of the Constitution could not foresee plane travel, the internet, telephones, etc. and the need for a cohesive national plan. We should be doing what is in our best interest, not Jefferson's. I do not think it is in our best interest to run a country in 2009 based entirely on a 200+ year old document. It has to be a living document that adapts to our needs. However, conservatives would prefer rolling back the past 50 years and reverse Roe v. Wade, restrict pornographic materials, have prayer back in schools, define marriage as one man and one woman, decency on TV, less social programs. So I guess it isn't a stretch to go back another 150+ years The fact that abortion, gay marriage etc. is or should be a state issue isn't something that's outdated in 2009. I do find the "activist judges" argument to be a laughable one though, because probably 3/4 of the time you hear someone saying it, they're just mad that the judge did the opposite of what they wanted.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 4, 2009 -> 07:17 AM) The part that saids all issues not addressed by the Constitution are left up to the states... 10th amendment, which put into writing what was already known.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 4, 2009 -> 07:11 AM) Also, I have defended Ozzie (and will continue to do so) for playing his bench. But I really do wish he wouldn't have a "bench day" like last night. I thought he had finally learned to get away from that, based on last year (he did it a lot less last season). But now its back - run the whole bench out there in one game. Not a good strategy. And never play Scott Podsednik in RF again. Ever.
