The Official Soxtalk Countdown thread
ChiliIrishHammock24 replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Aparicio days until P&C -
Just started Season 2 of Sirens today. The VERY first conversation of the season? Will Jose Abreu have a sophomore slump or not.
-
I'm actually going to say the 2nd half Abreu is more who he will be. .320 avg, 28 HR, 118 RBI, .403 OBP.

All Star host selection to mimic Super Bowl
ChiliIrishHammock24 replied to Buehrle>Wood's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I've actually been dying to see a HR derby at Wrigley forever now, or since I saw Glenn Allen Hill hit that HR on the rooftop. I want to see it again. -
Also, they came to Ball State a year or two ago, but I didn't go see it. I think I had just graduated the semester before.

QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Feb 6, 2015 -> 02:26 AM) I am probably too excited to see them. I have only heard good things. I don't think I have ever laughed so hard in my life while watching them. If you really want to laugh go check out Murr on Novocaine. I cried Impractical Jokers is so good. I've probably told this story here before, but in college when the show was about to air for the first time, one of my roommates and I were always making fun of how STUPID that show looked. The commercials for it made it look so bad. She used to say "Hey, don't forget, we have to watch that new show Impractical Jokers tomorrow night!", as a joke because we decided to hate-watch it. Now, we both can't get enough of the show. I've never seen a show look so bad in the commercials and have it turn out to be so good. She's in love with Q. I think Joe is probably the best. His dead pan and quick wit is incredible.

Official NHL 2014-15 Thread

Leaving for St. Louis tomorrow afternoon. Weather looks to be in the 60's this weekend, I can't f***ing wait for that. -
Victor Martinez tears meniscus
ChiliIrishHammock24 replied to Bigsoxhurt35's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Feb 5, 2015 -> 05:48 PM) A torn meniscus is pretty minor. He should be back by then. Sal Perez was 21 when he tore his. He missed more than 3 months. V-Mart is 36. -
I didn't notice, but Season 2 of Sirens started a couple weeks ago. It's a comedy on USA about a paramedic team in Chicago. It's written by Denis Leary, so anyone who loved Rescue Me will appreciate the humor in this show. I highly recommend it for someone looking for a goofy comedy with a healthy dose of Chicago references and sports jokes.

S1 of Black Sails ended really strongly. It took me a while to get through the first 5 episodes, but the last 3 episodes were very strong and I am actually excited for S2 now. I still get confused on some of the storylines at Nassau. I have no idea what that chick's dad is doing, and I have no idea who that Barlow lady is either.

QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Feb 5, 2015 -> 07:26 PM) Maybe this is more of a younger-person show, but does anyone here watch The League? The League is awesome.
-
QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Feb 5, 2015 -> 02:04 PM) Better Call Saul starts on Sunday!! "Like Jessie in this b****, WE SO EXCITED!" - With the Saved by the Bell reunion video, I thought that lyric was especially appropriate.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Feb 5, 2015 -> 10:49 AM) I'll take that bet. They won 73 last year and will add Jon Lester, Jason Hammel, Miguel Montero, Dexter Fowler, and Kris Bryant (nevermind full seasons from Javier Baez and Jorge Soler too). I have them pegged as about a .500 team, but could definitely see them in the same 85 range as I currently have the Sox. That is one of my pet peeves this offseason when I see anyone make a list of all the things the Cubs added that will make them better in 2015, and I see Jason Hammel included. He was ON the Cubs last season. He pitched 108 innings for them. He already contributed, and quite highly, to their 73 wins. I don't really considering that as a reason why they will be better in 2015 because it was an asset that already figured in to 2014. It's just one of the things that bugs me when I see "Their rotation is much improved, they added Lester and Hammel to go along with Arrieta!", ehhh, not really.

Google tells me Showgirls was a terrible stripper movie from the 90's. I get it now.
-
QUOTE (ewokpelts @ Feb 4, 2015 -> 11:50 PM) He's well spoken and seems to have a decent head on his shoulders. And is local-ish(Indianapolis). Like you said, if he can succeed on the field, the Sox will have a solid asset. I really like that once he got injured and he was shut down, he decided to go take 17 credit hours at IU to work towards his degree. He seems like a very smart guy who won't have a problem with the mental aspect of baseball.

QUOTE (SoCalSox @ Feb 4, 2015 -> 10:28 PM) Via Kaplan, the Cubs are in on Shields... Interesting. To be fair, Kaplan thinks the Cubs are getting everyone, so I rarely take anything he says too seriously.

Yoan Moncada signs with Red Sox
ChiliIrishHammock24 replied to GGajewski18's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE (QuickJones81 @ Feb 4, 2015 -> 06:19 PM) If the Dodgers land Moncada, does that vault them to the position of top farm system? Moncada, Pederson, Seager, Urias, Holmes, Verdugo 4 of the top 20 would be pretty damn good. -
QUOTE (fathom @ Feb 4, 2015 -> 11:29 PM) Tonight Show with an amazing Saved By The Bell skit It was so perfect. I didn't get the stripper joke though. Did that actress really go on to be a stripper? After I watched that video, I watched the "Teens React to Saved by the Bell", and they often include facts about the topics they are reacting to. I had no idea that Saved by the Bell had so many spinoffs, and that one of the spinoffs lasted longer than the original show did. Weird to think the original show was only 4 seasons long. I knew about The College Years show, but then there were like 4 spinoffs after that. The "Saved by the Bell: New Class" one lasted the longest, 7 years. I had no idea.

QUOTE (bmags @ Feb 4, 2015 -> 03:41 PM) And yet Jeter was a huge celebrity. Baseball has had many larger than life figures, and very recently do not. This isn't like football and goalie masks where the "you can't see their face" excuse is there. Baseball very recently has done a terrible job of injecting their stars into pop culture relevance. You don't think marketing can change that? QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Feb 4, 2015 -> 03:31 PM) And I agree, the NBA does a lot better job marketing their stars, but I don't think that has anything to do with the lame all-star weekend they have.
-
QUOTE (oldsox @ Feb 4, 2015 -> 03:32 PM) How does Hahn explain to JR the $4MM++ price tag he put on Viciedo? It's like paying $6MM to Gordo. Again, how was he supposed to assume he would sign Melky Cabrera, especially when that was the last of the big deals made, and when JR finally gave them clearance for it? It's easy to call it a stupid move in hindsight, but they had to cover their asses.
-
QUOTE (bmags @ Feb 3, 2015 -> 01:47 PM) No, in fact I'm talking about the NBA all star weekend, which has been a huge marketing success and is why baseball has an all star week. The NBA didn't invent the all star game, and the Pro Bowls advantage has nothing to do with marketing and everything to do with football. They couldn't have done more stupid things to make it less relevant, just as baseball's stupid "make it count" is not a marketing success. I can name NBA all star weekend activities right now without looking: Game, Dunk contest, 3 point contest, skills competition, rookie/soph game, in addition to the much better job the NBA does at using that weekend to promote their stars and have them interact with media/fans. That's the marketing angle. That's what they do way better than the MLB. Baseball has done a horrendous job of creating star power in an era of lesser home runs. If you did a poll of most famous athletes, where would Mike Trout land? If that's true, why doesn't anyone watch the NBA all-star activities? And I agree, the NBA does a lot better job marketing their stars, but I don't think that has anything to do with the lame all-star weekend they have. Just fundamentally, you see a basketball players face much more often than in baseball. Basketball is a much more intimate sport, the cameras are much closer and tighter to the action, as are the fans. Basketball shoes are such a huge business and every player has their signature shoes that helps spread a player's brand. Basketball players are much more recognizable and known than baseball players, but I wouldn't say that has anything to do with their all-star weekend.

QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Feb 4, 2015 -> 03:07 PM) My question is, in real life in Russia do they address each other with their first and last names all of the time? That I am not sure of, but it could be a device to help the audience remember who people are. It's a good question.
-
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Feb 4, 2015 -> 02:16 PM) Agree. I'm starting to lose interest. I couldn't tell you what happened in the finale. Yeah, neither can I. I wish they would get back to the study, not "How can I get a boner?".
-
What a shame. I loved him when he first joined the team. I really thought he would be a Carlos Lee type player. Maybe the Sox bring him back to Charlotte on a minor league deal.

Man, Hawkins also sounds a lot like Kenny.
