Oh my lord that 3rd HR video is disgusting. Such a terrifying sound off the bat and had an Adam Dunn-like flight path.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Oct 18, 2013 -> 01:25 AM) I like this. Abreu, McCann, trade with Arizona for Parra and Davison. Boom, offseason.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Oct 18, 2013 -> 01:18 AM) The payroll is at $66M before Gordon's arbitration and likely extension for Quintana and possibly Santiago. Even with those, if the Sox want to aim for $110+, they have enough for Ellsbury and McCann. Signing Abreu, McCann, and Ellsbury will put people in seats. Then add in AviGar, Sale, and Quintana and you have players that can attract fans. If the Sox sign Ellsbury and McCann then I am going to jizz in your pants.

I didn't want McCann up until about an hour ago. I think this team may actually compete in 2015 if they can add Abreu and McCann.

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Oct 17, 2013 -> 11:04 PM) Closest on money but wrong team. God damnit for me trying to be different. I truly believed it was the Rangers or White Sox.

QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Oct 17, 2013 -> 03:37 PM) I said they could be a +.500 team which means more than 81 wins. Any team that is over .500 is close to being a playoff contender. I never once said 81 wins get you in the playoffs, you're tryin to put words in my mouth to prove your point. Pick one. You say I am wrong and that they WILL be a playoff contender, but then say that they would be "CLOSE TO" being one. Either they are or they are not. My guess is 2016 will be the first season the Sox will matter within the division. You think it will be sooner, correct? Fine, we understand each other then.

QUOTE (flavum @ Oct 17, 2013 -> 02:35 PM) We'll see. I guess it's a good thing this gets sorted out before Konerko makes his big decision. If this really gets wrapped up in 2 weeks, that'd be awesome, especially if it means Abreu signs w/ the Sox because then it will be a clean cut for Konerko. We don't have a spot, and we don't have offer him a pity deal. He can retire clean.

QUOTE (flavum @ Oct 17, 2013 -> 02:31 PM) Seems pretty legit when they allow mlb.com to put out a story that says multiple industry sources say he's down to three teams. He'll be an Astro. That doesn't mean that MLB.com is on the ruse, it just means multiple people "in the industry" may be.

Everyone is saying the magic number is 70, which is probably why the Rangers will swoop in and offer 6 yrs/$75M. I don't believe that he has really trimmed his list down to 3 teams already, I think that's just hot air to get one of the other teams to scramble and offer more.

QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Oct 17, 2013 -> 11:30 AM) God, you're insufferable. Nobody said 81 wins contends for the playoffs. The point I was making is that if signing two free agents that fit within your budget is enough to get you over .500, you are very close to being a playoff contender, especially if our young core of players can continue progressing. You are definitely not "3 years away" like you claim every other post. I said they won't be playoff contenders for 3 more years, you said I was wrong because they could win 81 games next year. How does what you say jive with what I said? I think they can win 81 games next year too. I don't think it's likely, but I think there is a reasonable chance. But great, that's still not a playoff contender. You could say 81 wins in 2014, 85-86 wins in 2015, and then just like that, 90+ wins in 2016, and BOOM, a playoff contender 3 seasons away. Soooo insufferable.
-
QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Oct 17, 2013 -> 06:44 AM) Yes, we all know you don't think the Sox will compete next year. You say it in every thread. But I think you are dead wrong. If the Sox were to land Abreu and McCann/Salty, I don't think that there is any reason to believe they won't be a +.500 team next year with the rotation that they have. Call me crazy, but I don't think 81 wins will contend for the playoffs next year.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Oct 16, 2013 -> 10:44 PM) I don't know guys... if his true talent is 2013 Salty, he could be a real solid contributor for several years. He'll only be 29 next year, and he just put up a 3.7 WAR season. A lot of that is from above average defense. I'd pay $8m a year for 3-4 WAR for the next 4 years without blinking. He is well worth $8M a year if he repeats his 2013, but the question would be if he can repeat it, and the other question is whether any of that will matter to a team that just lost 99 games. I don't see us being a playoff contender for 3 more years, which is pretty much the entirety of a deal Salty would get.

QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Oct 16, 2013 -> 10:13 PM) It's too good a fit him being lefty and us having developing righties. Well, he's a switch hitter, but I'm sure he will bat lefty as some point, yeah.

Haha, a scene from Tim Allen's show "Last Man Standing" had me rolling just now. Part of the episode was focused on his daughter choosing a sorority over her boyfriend. In the end it's Mike (Tim Allen) and his wife in the kitchen.... Wife - "I'm just worried about who our daughters will end up with" Mike - "Yeah, well they can't all win the lottery like you did when you got me" Wife - "Yeah, but you'll remember that most lottery winners end up killing themselves" Mike - "And you'll remember that most of them end up blowing their winnings!"

Jake "The Bulldog" Peavy on evaluating pitchers
ChiliIrishHammock24 replied to Eminor3rd's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I like WHIP, but I also really like K/BB to tell me about a pitcher too. Those are 100% pitcher controlled numbers and it allows for strikeout pitchers and pure control pitchers to be evaluated on similar scales. Using a K/BB ratio, Mark Buehrle is right above Anibal Sanchez, despite Sanchez striking out 2 1/2 more batters per 9 since 2000. -
If we are talking what we'd have to pay, I'd offer him at most 3 yrs/$25M. He wouldn't accept that offer though. I get that he is coming off of a career year, and he's likely to be worth $10M a year to some other team if he can have a season halfway between his norm and his breaking 2013 year, but I just don't think he fits the time frame for this team.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 16, 2013 -> 06:47 PM) AJP with a pretty good Peavy impression on Fox. Beckham does a good one too.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Oct 16, 2013 -> 05:33 PM) Doh didnt realize Kendrick was late October of last year. Magna Carta is pretty vanilla, its not really blowing me away. Wayne is hit or miss I feel, sometimes his songs are dynamite, other times hes just on another planet. Im also thinking about going backwards and doing other years as well. Im going to talk with my friend. The main reason Ive been thinking about this is I was listening to Stankonia the other day and I wondered if people even remember Outkast anymore. Which is kind of ridiculous seeing as retrospectively it appears Outkast was way ahead of their time. Outkast was pretty great, I love seeing Andre 3000 pop up on songs every now and then, and even Big Boi on a couple. My favorite rap albums of the past few years would have to be Childish Gambino's "Camp" first and foremost. Then Macklemore's "The Heist", then Kanye's "My Dark Twisted Fantasy". My favorite rap album of my lifetime has been Lupe's "The Cool" back in like 2008.

QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Oct 14, 2013 -> 09:39 AM) Black people can't be racist bro. Seriously, what are you talking about. Back in 2010 he called dark skinned Latino player "impostors" of the black players, and said that agents who want black faces have no reason to go to the southside of Chicago and sign a black guy for $5M when he can just pay a Domincan player "a bag of chips".

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Oct 16, 2013 -> 04:57 PM) As of now my 1 and 2 are Kanye and Kendrick. Im waiting until I see their concert to make a final decision. I saw Mac Miller live and wasnt terribly impressed, but Im going to give his album and Big Sean definite consideration. Right now Im repeatedly listening to Magna Carta and I Am Not A Human Being 2, just to make sure that Im not missing something. And I assume Eminem is going to be in the running. Well Kendrick didn't have a CD in 2013, so I'm not sure if he qualifies your list. I really didn't like Magna Carta...Holy Grail. A few good tracks, but overall I thought it was Jay-Zs worst in a while. I hate Lil Wayne, so no comment on his CD this year because I didn't even give it a listen. Overall I just thought it was a real weak year. 2012 was much better I thought.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Oct 16, 2013 -> 04:42 PM) If you live in Bristol, your favorite team is NASCAR What state is Bristol in? I've always assumed it was Bristol, CT.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Oct 16, 2013 -> 09:56 AM) I tried it last night and finally got some "missions," like stealing meth or destroying evidence. I still don't have any big heists available yet, but we're all in the 6-8 level range. Maybe we have to be higher. Rockstar makes great games, but their interface, mixed with the explanation for the interface, is just horrible. You will need to be a higher rank, but also the Heists havent even been released yet. They are working on adding Heists, drug dealing, and casinos. All of this will be free content.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Oct 16, 2013 -> 03:54 PM) Im thinking about doing a top 3 or so for rap albums of 2013. Anyone have suggestions that I may not know of? I thought 2013 was a pretty bad year for rap music CDs. The only one I can even think of that I enjoyed this year was Kanye's CD, but even that one wasn't one of my favorites of his. I'm hoping Eminem's CD that comes out in 3 weeks is awesome. EDIT: Big Sean's "Hall of Fame" and Mac Miller's CDs this year would probably be my #2 and #3 after Kanye's.

That is such a weird concept to me, that minor league sports teams can essentially be traded to other organizations. Who do the people who live there then cheer for? Are they Pirates fans now? Are they fans of wherever these Bristol players move to? It's got to be a weird thing for a little kid whose favorite team is a minor league team.
