QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 12:54 PM) If you offered him straight up 8/$200+, you might get him to sign without much worry. Ha, yeah I'll agree with that. Jerry better start walking down Michigan Avenue again. -
Who should start at 3B/2B for the near future?

Yeah if we took on Soriano we'd be able to dump all three of Linebrink/Teahen/Pierre PLUS get a prospect PLUS get a guy like Marshall IMO, and I'd still be asking for more. Soriano is one of the absolute worst deals in all of baseball, without question. He's playing well now, but the Cubs are giving him something like $18M per until he's like 38-39 or so, and much of his value comes from speed and power. When he's making even less contact and can't run anymore he'll essentially be a DH who can't walk and strikes out more than Jay Bruce with like half the home runs he'd hit... I mean, this dude is going to be seriously bad and the Cubs are going to be paying out the ass for him. This is the deal that, among all others, should have had Jim Hendry's dumbass canned a long time ago. Trading Soriano straight-up for Vernon Wells, as bad as Vernon's deal is (he even makes more), would be a steal for the Cubs. That's how bad Soriano's deal is. Zito might even be a better deal at this point with the way he's been pitching. -

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 12:04 PM) I disagree. I think Fielder is going to cost a lot more. He's the bigger name and has been a huge part of that franchise for years now. Trading Fielder when he has a year left on his contract would really piss off Brewers fans and could have a negative impact on ticket sales. Honestly, I think Melvin holds on to Fielder at least until the offseason unless he is absolutely blown away. Agree, and I wouldn't want to trade for Prince anyway. Borass is going to make sure that no matter what the Yankees, Red Sox (especially), Angels, Dodgers (ownership issues but Manny's off the books soon), Mets, etc. all get involved. No way we'd ever get a negotiation window. And beyond that, Borass' word isn't worth s***, because at least s*** makes for good fertilizer. We'd end up getting some sort of promise or some sort of condition that no matter whether we met it or not, Borass would still try to go behind our backs and get the bigger market teams to beat us out. It wouldn't even be worth it. Now even if Dunn did cost a ton though, and even though he is a future FA, I'd still rather spend on him because at least he's not a Borass client and he does seem like a loyal guy. The biggest concern with Dunn IMO is how do we sign the guy to an extension if he demands to play the field all season? Because that's not something I'd be up for personally. -

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 11:50 AM) Why would Dunn cost less? He's essentially the same exact player as Fielder, apparently doesn't want to be traded, the Nats don't want to trade him, the Nats want to sign him to an extension, and he's a Type A free agent. He's probably going to cost the exact same as Fielder. Nobody expected Dunn to have to settle for a s***ty 2-year deal with the Nats last time he was a FA. I thought he'd get 4 years and big money easy, but apparently other teams didn't think he was worth that. Adam Dunn is a major K threat who has always had issues following him around like the infamous "Adam Dunn doesn't like baseball" saga and the "Adam Dunn doesn't try" stuff. Beyond that, Prince is elite, Adam is not. Adam is a guy with some of the biggest raw power in baseball and is LH, and he walks a ton, but he's not the hitter Prince is. He's not the name Prince is, either. Personally, I don't buy the Nats won't trade Dunn stuff either. Yes they'd probably like to build around some guys, but I'm sure Mr. Rizzo understands that youth is still the key, and I'm sure he also understands that if the Nats continue assembling a strong young core they'll be able to attract some very good veteran baseball players in the future. *Edit: That said, we may have to still bowl the Nats over. But no way does he cost what Prince does IMO. -
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 11:46 AM) Rios is 0 for 10 in his career against Lowe. Call it the ex-Brave factor, but I think either Jones, Lillibridge or Kotsay will do something unexpected, the White Sox will win and we'll still be questioning Kotsay batting 3rd, lol. Vizquel has the most AB's against Lowe, FWIW. Nobody has hit him all that well. Looks to be a pitcher's battle today. Lilli will get a big hit and make a great play in the field because that's just how this team is going right now. Everyone other than Linecatastrophe and Randy Willohs***thisguyiswarmingupinthepenwhatthef***dowedonowiams is helping, even Beckham (despite the evil thread about sending him down) is doing it in the field.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 03:17 PM) LOL, this seems a little overdramatic, don't you think? It's on a public message board, I'd like to think that anybody can comment on anything that they want. --- In regards to Teahen, I think he can be a valuable player in the right role. That role is not as a starting 3B. It might be as a super utility player, it might be as a stopgap corner outfielder, it might even be as a DH. I think what might be best for the Sox is if Teahen comes back and can put up a line similar to that of Chris Burke in 2006 when he put up .276/.347/.418/.765 playing all over the diamond. Hell, I would even say that if either Viciedo proves he can actually hit a bit and sling enough leather to stick or the Sox go and get a decent 3B, it would leave Kotsay with little to no value on this club. Teahen can then fill that spot on the roster while also having the versatility to play a bit of 2B and 3B if absolutely necessary (and with Vizquel on the roster, I would hope that "if necessary" never comes to fruition). I just say that stuff to SoxAce because he always shows up to tell me I'm wrong. We're enemies. I see where you're coming from on Teahen but I just don't think he's good enough defensively to play all over the field like that. But I do think he brings something to the table that could help us in kind of a Rob Mackowiak kind of way, with less defense but a better bat. The whole crux of my argument though was that Teahen doesn't need to be a starter anywhere on the field and Sox fans shouldn't accept him as one. They should demand better. But yeah, Teahen as the lefty makes Kotsay redundant. Viciedo would do the same to Jones if he gets going, although not having another true OF back up would kind of suck. -
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 03:31 PM) AJ is a slightly above league average catcher with solid but not spectacular defensive skills who is in his age 33 season, which is generally around the time when catchers begin to break down or are forced to a different position if their offensive game is good enough to translate. For examples' sake, here are some OPS's of the best catchers of all time from ages 32-35... Mike Piazza 32 - .957 33 - .906 34 - .860 (64 games) 35 - .806 Johnny Bench 32 - .810 33 - .858 (52 games) 34 - .716 35 - .741 (final season) Ivan Rodriguez 32 - .893 33 - .735 34 - .769 35 - .714 and there's plenty more where that came from. It's just not reasonable to expect Pierzynski to maintain any type of success or health beyond this season, and people who want to see what Flowers can produce are not in the wrong at all. I would disagree with "slightly above" because he is an above average catcher. But otherwise I see your reason for concern. My problem is the thinking that Flowers is going to come up and not be a black hole. Catcher IMO is the most important position on the field other than pitcher and there's a lot that goes into it. Catchers as a rule aren't terrific offensive players for that reason, so to find a guy who can hit plus block some balls plus call a game plus handle a veteran staff in general while helping young pitchers grow - well, a lot of teams don't have that. We didn't have that for a long time. And I don't see how Flowers is going to give us that. And for that reason, I don't want to see us get rid of AJ until it is apparent that we have to, and I don't see us being at that point. AJ is raking this month. My guess would be Flowers would come up, struggle mightily at the plate, and then probably take those plate struggles back behind the plate with him. Or vice versa. I would much rather acquire a veteran who is younger if we have to go that route than go with a prospect of Flowers' ilk. He's a very nice prospect in all honesty, but I'm not convinced.
-
BTW Sox fans don't overvalue AJ, at least not here. They underrate the s*** out of him and overvalue that stupid roid monkey in Charlotte.
-
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 02:02 PM) And the #1 reason KW didn't trade AJ: there was ZERO market for him. No real interest out there. Yeah, 'cause you know best.

QUOTE (WCSox @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 01:30 PM) Wise was good defensively, but had no business hitting leadoff. I could've tolerated him as a one-year #9, though. Nix did absolutely nothing to justify his spot on the roster. He can't get on base regularly and he can't field. Okay, so now you've just admitted Wise was good at something when you said he wasn't good at anything earlier. -1 for you. You could have tolerated Teahen as a #9 hitter.... WHERE?!?! THat's the f***ing point, where?! Where are you willing to sacrifice that much defense for that little offensive payoff? QUOTE (WCSox @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 01:30 PM) Yes, because throwing the ball into the visitor's dugout and extending a single into a double is MUCH more favorable than Teahen's bad hands. Brilliant analysis! I'd take Nix over Teahen at 3B and anywhere else defensively, as bad as Nix would be, because over the long haul Nix will make more plays than Teahen will. That's because Teahen takes defense to a whole new low. Nix simply has the better skillset for an IF. I don't know how you could dispute that since Nix is a MIF and Teahen is a corner IF, and those players get put in those spots for a reason. QUOTE (WCSox @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 01:30 PM) He's never "on" and he's absolutely sucked for the past year and a half. Again, he does NOTHING for this team. Teahen at least gets on base. Do you understand why this is a terrible comparison now? Go look at his first/second half splits, he is on sometimes. It's just early in the year and then he implodes. So, for a little while early on he actually does do something for the team. For the love of god, Teahen's .340 OBP does not negate his s***ty power production, s***ty batting average, and most importantly his atrocious defense. Because of this he does not belong on the field regularly. WTF is wrong with you? And for the zillionth time, Linebrink and Teahen are in the exact same boat. Both would be DFA candidates if not for the money owed to them. QUOTE (WCSox @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 01:30 PM) Wrong. Vizquel would be much better at 2B. Hell, Nix and Lillibridge might even be better options. Beckham is a liability in the lineup and he needs to work with a different hitting instructor in the minors. Please go away right now. Seriously. Beckham is a big part of the future of this organization and you don't take him out of the lineup in favor of those other players especially when he's coming into his own as a second baseman at the MLB level defensively and becoming a better partner of Alexei. Your hitting instructor comment is another example of your lack of understanding. What is Walker telling him to do that's so wrong, since you know so much? How come Beckham hit well under Walker last year. Give me a f***ing break please, talking about how he needs to work with another hitting instructor in the minors. WHO?! You don't even know what their f***ing names are. You'd have to go online and look it up. You have no f***ing clue about who we have helping our hitters in the minors and how they'd help Gordon, so please quit. QUOTE (WCSox @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 01:30 PM) Jesus Christ, dude, Jones and Teahen are THIRD and FOURTH, respectively, on this team in OPS. Think about that for a minute. You're looking at Teahen's numbers and ability in a bubble, and completely disregarding the lack of offensive talent around him right now. Getting rid of your fourth-best hitter because hitters 5-9 aren't as "good" as you were lead to believe is a retarded way to run a baseball team. No, I'm looking at Teahen and seeing that he simply isn't that f***ing talented. There are several players on this club who are a ton better than Teahen will ever be, but they're not where they should be offensively. Go check the f***ing June numbers for some of these guys first. Jones has fallen off the cliff and others have been climbing. Jones and Teahen are NOT the 4th and 5th best hitters on this ballclub, despite what the numbers may say today on June 23rd. They are f***ing far from it. That was the point of my Berkman comment in that last post, that just because he's not hitting right now doesn't mean he's not a good hitter. Teahen's ceiling is not very high, okay? His floor? Same thing. That's why you don't settle for a player like that. You build a team trying to maximize the value of every position, and Teahen is s*** as a regular, no matter where he goes. At least a guy like Carlos can be very, very good if he turns it around. QUOTE (WCSox @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 01:30 PM) Uh, yeah, everyone's arguing just that, rather than the fact that the Sox have been beating up on horrible NL teams. Or that Peavy, Floyd, and Jenks have been pitching a lot better over that time. Please stop with the straw-grasping. You seriously need to develop your reading comprehension skills WC. When did I say just that? Go back and re-read. I said Omar "is a huge reason for our recent success." Read that again please. I never said he was the only reason, just one of them, and a big one. QUOTE (WCSox @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 01:30 PM) Coming from somebody like you, I'll take that as a compliment. I'm not surprised. -
It's all about how we're winning, not just that we're winning. If we were taking 7-6 ballgames against bad starters and bad bullpens, and we were making all kinds of errors and blowing late leads only to reclaim them - that's bad baseball, win or lose. We're playing good baseball even when other teams are playing good baseball against us. Case in point, the bunts Christian Guzman laid down against us normally kill us, but it didn't. Peavy even made a star play off the mound. A big play in IIRC that second game vs,. the Nats was Dunn not coming off the bag to get a throw which led to a run for us. These are the things *we* normally do, but see, we played well for just long enough to stay in the game and allow the opponent to (channelling Hawk) beat themselves. You just can't say the NL is bad when they're playing good games against us, which has definitely happened. I guarantee that most teams would find it very hard to go 3-0 on Strasburg, Martin, and Hanson like we just did. If all NL rotations were like that then people would be saying the AL is the weaker league.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 11:09 AM) Then who's going to hit leadoff? Reed Johnson? In the AL? That's a clear improvement? I just don't think that Morel is worth that much to very many teams....he's struggling mightily in AAA, and what's his OPS upside in the majors, around 725-750? Unless he plays near Gold Glove defense, he just doesn't have enough pop to play everyday at USCF. We already have Juan Pierre, Teahen and Vizquel with limited power, I can't imagine adding another corner spot with someone whose upside at the next level is 8-12 homers. The point was simply that upgrading over Pierre wouldn't necessarily cost us our best prospects. I just threw out 2 guys off the top of my head who presumably would be available for next to nothing and are currently having better seasons than Pierre is. But anyway, the main thing we need is a big bat. We can put it in the field if he's good enough to play there or we can put him at DH. But that's the main thing we need, and after that we can tweak a bit here and there if we need to. -

QUOTE (WCSox @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 10:56 AM) Apparently you didn't understand me the first time, so I'll try again: Teahen can do something reasonably well (get on base) and there is a dire lack of that skill set on the current roster. Linebrink has had NO value whatsoever on this team for the past year and a half. They're stuck with him, and hide him in the mop-up role to limit the damage that he does to this team. Linebrink's contract also means that he's unmovable, so the best that you can hope for is that he gets his act together at some point. I don't understand you because you don't make any sense. Your problem is you are singling out one aspect of Teahen's game, saying he's good at it, and then not doing the same for anyone else. You did that in other posts about Nix and Wise. Well Nix has problems throwing the ball, but in terms of range, hands, anticipation/reaction, etc. he's a much better fielder than Teahen is. There's no question about that. Wise can play the OF just fine and he adds value as a PR off the bench, and Wise is unquestionably a much better defender at his positions than Teahen is at anything defensively. But Wise and Nix get no props from you even though they were in the Majors for at least *some* reason? That's unfair, and you sound stupid for saying that. Every player does at least one thing well to get to the Major Leagues. Linebrink is the same way. Linebrink has some very good stuff and when he's on he can be a legit setup man in the AL. But according to you he's not good anything/does nothing well. But see, Linebink, in the end, is a s***ty pitcher who is overpaid and only sticks around because of his contract. Teahen, in the end, is also a s***ty player who is overpaid and will only stick around because of his contract. See how this works? Teahen may have some OBP skills, and I've said before that he does have some value in a PH/UT role, but the fact is he is terrible at 3B, he is terrible at 2B, he is terrible in the OF, he doesn't have the bat for 1B, and he doesn't have the bat for DH either. He's not a starting player. He's a bench player that the Sox made a mistake in acquiring and extending. That's it. QUOTE (WCSox @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 10:56 AM) A .340 OBP is decent and, sadly, significantly above-average on this roster. What's your f***ing point already? Jesus Christ dude, I can tell you Gordon Beckham isn't supposed to hit .200 all year because that's not good for the offense, but the reason he is playing is because he's a better f***ing baseball player than anything we have at the position. You can't compare a s***ty starting baseball player to a bunch of good baseball players and say the s***ty one is better simply because right now he's hitting a bit better. Good lord. I mean, come on here. The board is all talking about Berkman and I think he's hitting like .230 or something. Maybe the Astros would trade him to us straight up for Omar Vizquel because right now Omar is hitting better. This is retarded. Mark Teahen isn't a good enough offensive player to make up for the s***ty defense he'd play at any given position, and his bat alone isn't good enough as a DH. And here you are f***ing arguing this after everyone who has been watching the ballclub OPENLY ACKNOWLEDGES that Omar Vizquel - by simply replacing Teahen - is a huge reason for our recent success. QUOTE (WCSox @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 10:56 AM) Your relentless trashing of Teahen's defense and simultaneous propping up of Nix The Butcher's shows excessive hyperbole and bias on your part. I agree that Teahen shouldn't be playing 3B but, at the very least, his OF UZR numbers don't corroborate your off-the-wall analysis. He's that bad! Nix is a better defender than Teahen, that's how bad Teahen is. Nix can physically do things Teahen cannot. Teahen sometimes can't even stop the damn ball from going between his legs. He's really, really, really awful. And as for Teahen's OF play, why don't you go on over to the Royals board and tell them about Teahen's defense in the OF. See what they have to say about him. QUOTE (WCSox @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 10:56 AM) Don't get me wrong, I'm not arguing that Teahen is a good player. I'm arguing that he's "good enough" to play on this roster, and will be "good enough" to round out a 2011 team that will have to replace PK, AJ, Jenks, and Putz with a diminished payroll. I'm sorry that you have some personal vendetta against Teahen, but he's practically a lock to be in the starting lineup next year. Deal with it. Teahen is good enough to be a UT guy and PH. He is not good enough to play everyday at the MLB level for a contending team. Carlos Quentin and Gordon Beckham are not playing because they're .200-.220 hitters, they are playing because they are potentially great hitters who are going bad right now. You don't bench either one of those guys to play a no-ceiling hack just because his OBP is higher. You seem to miss the point of all of this. And dude, I'm not buying for a second that Teahen is a lock to be a starting position player for us in 2011 - especially not from the same person who just said earlier that Kenny envisions Teahen as the bridge to our next generation of outfielders. That was literally one of the dumbest things I have ever read on this board, no offense. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 09:54 AM) If you can be the one to convince Carlos Quentin to start putting up a line better than that, I'd be absolutely thrilled. Yeah Carlos needs to get better, but the reason you play Carlos over Teahen in the OF is the same reason you play Beckham over Teahen at 2B. One has huge upside with the bat and is a far superior defender to boot, and the other is Mark Teahen. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 09:48 AM) If I were the Nats, I wouldn't do that deal, not when Dunn is going to get me 2 draft picks for walking. Those picks are also far away though. And Dunn isn't an elite player all-around, he's just a great hitter, so he's not going to price himself into pure contender range. The Nats could very easily end up with a supplemental first plus a second rounder, and then if they want someone nice there they'll have to pony up the cash. Flowers is close to being ready now and he's owed no bonus. If the Sox throw in an arm or two with upside - yeah, that's the kind of deal they'd want IMO. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 09:43 AM) Going to the numbers, Teahen's career UZR/150 in RF is -2.0 and in LF is 5.9 (only 31 career games in LF). Of course, his numbers at 3b this year are down from his career numbers significantly as well, so either he could be worse now than he was beforehand on defense, or there could be some statistical blips going on. Just go back and watch some of those Royals games. Or ask Caulfield, he was watching them. The guy turns easy plays into thrilling adventures, and to put a guy like that out there, you need a bat a hell of a lot better than one with a career .268/.331/.417 line. I thought we had standards for f***s sake. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 09:23 AM) Yeah, but the question in terms of going for it is...what does KW have that he's willing to give up? I still think trading any of Flowers, Viciedo, Morel, or Hudson is basically suicide for next year since by my count we have 10 open roster spots for next year and only about $10 million or so available for free agency. Out of those, I think Morel is the most tradeable...but that means you're comfortable with Teahen at 3b for the remainder of his contract. Well I don't think the Sox would have to part with any of those guys to land a Ryan Spilborghs or a Reed Johnson for example. Improving over Juan Pierre's offense isn't exactly the toughest thing in the world to do. I've been 100% pro-trade Morel in the past, but now I'd like to hang on to him at least until we can find an MLB solution. As for the other guys, I'd deal any one of them for the right bat. We probably wouldn't be able to land that right bat, but if a Flowers deal gets you Dunn then you wake up and do it. He's a guy we could probably extend too. But keep Hudson and Viciedo if you can IMO. -

WC, I don't even know what you're arguing at this point. 1. You said Teahen wouldn't be a UT player because he's paid like a starter. I refuted that by asking why, if that's the case, do we have a LR who is paid like an elite setup man? Just because a player's salary keeps him on the 25-man roster doesn't mean he's going to occupy a major role. 2. For f***s sake WC, hitting .255/.340/.387 and playing some of the worst defense you'll ever see played by a regular in the Major Leagues is NOT a good thing and is NOT indicative of a starting baseball player. Your brilliant solution is to take that .255/.340/.387 line and send it over to 1B/DH/LF/RF where it ***SUCKS EVEN HARDER*** and then attempt to justify it with his contract, but then turn around and make it sound like he earned it. WTF are you even talking about? 3. Dude, CQ isn't some gold glover out there in RF but if you really think Teahen is comparable to CQ in the OF you're nuts. How do I know this? By watching Teahen play out there when he was with the Royals. The guy plays the OF like dudes are hitting whiffle balls out there. He looks like a cat chasing string. He's an uncoordinated hack who would make people long for the days of Rob Mackowiak. 4. Nix was an error machine but at least he had hands! At least he could get the damn ball before he threw it away! Teahen is like an All-Star defensive player in a parallel universe somewhere where everyone who sucks at something is great at it over there. In that world I must be great at getting through to people since apparently I suck so hard at it here. 5. Please read what I wrote. You made the brilliant statement that "obviously" our GM intends on using Teahen as a bridge to our outfielders of the future. I however called bulls*** and stated that Kenny intended on getting a league average 3B in Teahen and it turned out to be a mistake. Kenny never intended on the guy being a damn OF, nor does he intend on turning the guy into one. If Kenny really thought Teahen was a good OF he wouldn't have poo-pooed the idea of Teahen playing anywhere else but third before ST even started. Kenny and his team made an error in the scouting department and now they're paying for it. But paying for that mistake doesn't mean running out a UT everyday instead of putting someone better out there. Jordan Danks could strike out 700 times a game and still be a zillion times better OF than Teahen will ever be, and D2 would be at the MLB minimum, so I see no reason why the Sox would be in a position where they would be forced, or would even want to, send Mark Teahen out there in the clown car for a few laughs every night. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 09:17 AM) Juan Pierre isn't getting replaced and we all know it, so let's stop pretending otherwise. I can't even remember the last time he had a day off. Maybe Kenny grows a pair? If Kenny thinks we've got a shot he's going to go for it. Kenny isn't going to let Ozzie cockblock him out of a division title if he feels he's got a chance. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 09:12 AM) That's a list of 7 players, 3 of whom have OPS values above .800. It's decent, but not great. Then you throw in 2 sub-.600 OPS values into that lineup in Beckham and Jones/Kotsay, and at best it's "average" but it's no where near capable of carrying the pitching staff if they have a bad stretch again. Like I said, we need help. Replace Pierre with someone who is better and add a big bat - whala! Now we're killing people. The SoxTalk Hate Club was making it out like there was no realistic way to fix the offense this year, but that's not the case. -
