Addison Reed trade from DBacks' perspective
LittleHurt05 replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 19, 2014 -> 12:22 PM) And the example got paid $3.2 million, which is less than Downs and slightly more than Belly. If that is expensive, just wait to you see what Hahn is going to have to spend to fix the bullpen. It would be interesting to see what other offers, if any, they had for Reed. It does boggle my mind there is not 100% agreement the trade did not work out for the White Sox. Reed has way more saves than the example, but yes a similar amount in 2015, then much more most likely in 2016. Throughout their careers, Reed has not been a better reliever than Downs, Hahn just happened to sign him right when he fell apart. It wouldn't surprise me if Davidson was the best offer Hahn received, there was only one Kevin Towers out there. From what I have read on this board, there is 100% agreement the trade hasn't worked out for the Sox yet. Just because it hasn't worked out, doesn't mean it was a stupid trade. That also doesn't mean Davidson can't turn it around, he's 23, not 27. -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 19, 2014 -> 12:08 PM) Will he get paid next season any more than the Sox paid Belisario or Downs? For him to be really expensive, he would have to be really good. He probably will. Like I said, when it comes to arbitration, the word "save" makes all the difference. It's not about how well you pitched, it's whether or not you pitched in the 9th inning. http://www.hardballtimes.com/how-paying-es...es-teams-money/ http://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/2013/12/3...ary-arbitration -

QUOTE (SCCWS @ Sep 19, 2014 -> 11:35 AM) Let's not declare Addison Reed at 25 can't be a closer for a playoff team. I never said he can't be a closer for a playoff team. I said he wasn't gonna be closer for the next Sox/DBacks playoff teams. Like NSS said, he is about to get expensive, especially cause arbitration loves the save statistic. Given where those teams are, it makes zero sense to pay your everyday closer a lot of money. -
The Bahamas might not be the best location in December either, given their more Northern location and slightly cooler climate. If you only plan on hanging out at the resort by the beach/pool, I wouldn't worry as much about which country you go to, just find the best resort that you like (for your price). Outside the resort some places are safer than others, but if you are just gonna hang in one place, none of that really matters.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 18, 2014 -> 01:07 AM) A's blew a lead in the worst way possible.....1-0 going into the 9th, ended up imploding, with six runs surrendered, including 5 by Doolittle A's and Royals tied, 1/2 game behind Tigers M's 2 games back of both OAK and KC battle of survival Detroit 84-68 Kansas City 83-68 Oakland 83-69 Seattle 82-70 Top 3 teams make the playoffs. Seattle almost blew a golden ticket yesterday. They had Felix on the mound against a hungover AAAA lineup with a AAA pitcher on the mound, yet it was still 0-0 going into the 9th. Lucky for them LoMo saved the day.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 19, 2014 -> 09:51 AM) If you fired a GM for a bad trade, it would be the job with the most turnover . Hahn stole Eaton . I just can't understand why people still say it was the right move when it clearly is apparent Davidson isn't what was advertised. He still has 30 HR potential but it is rather unlikely. If Hahn traded him for a closer making close to minimum now I doubt anyone still saying last year's trade was right would say trading him for a closer now would be wrong. He wasn't what he was supposed to be. That is obvious. He really wasn't a top 100 prospect. If you can find a proven 30 HR 3B that a team would have traded for a mediocre closer, please let Rick Hahn know immediately. Welcome to rebuilding. Sometimes you have to take chances on guys and they won't always work out. And let's not declare Davidson dead after one bad AAA season at age 23. Either way, Addison Reed wasn't gonna be the closer for the next Sox playoff team, nor will he be the closer for the next DBacks playoff team. -

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Sep 19, 2014 -> 09:12 AM) I dont even care what hester thinks about his last few years in chicago. dont complain about not being involved in the offense if you cant break huddle in the middle of a game without Jay or the other wide receivers telling you the correct place to line up. That happened yesterday, Juilo grabbed his jersey and moved him over to the correct spot on the line. -
Holy bat flip!!! Brian McCann would go absolutely ballistic if he saw that one.

England must be relieved they don't have to give up their "home-grown" Wimbeldon champion.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 18, 2014 -> 11:48 PM) Then why were the stats used in the article? The reporter used them with confidence. But Zona willingly made the trade. Hmmm... do they know more than Buddy Bell? You like this trade? This is a results business. We gave up a strong closer candidate (he figured to be mighty comfortable in the role again this year on the South Side) for a guy who does not look like a prime prospect anymore. Maybe he'll be great. Did the Dbacks figure he was a strong candidate to be a bust? I happen to think a GM, if he is doing his job, at least has a closer in waiting if he trades a decent closer. I know, I know ... Nate Jones. The GM that willingly made the trade was fired two weeks ago. -
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 18, 2014 -> 08:14 PM) Calvin Johnson and Reggie Bush seemed to be backing Peterson, as did Charles Barkley. Bush's original quotes on CNN: "I most definitely discipline my daughter. I have a 1-year old daughter" "I definitely will try to obviously not leave bruises but I definitely will discipline her harshly depending on what the situation is."

QUOTE (iamshack @ Sep 18, 2014 -> 09:43 PM) Hearing he may have sexually assaulted a reporter? There has to be more to the story. You don't hold a press conference separate from the team just to announce you were unfaithful

Congrats to Hester, good for him. I have always been a huge Lovie fan and McCown is a great story, but given the Chicago meat head hype around them, I'm not upset to see them struggle. And did you guys see the size of Julio Jones arms? Wow. -
QUOTE (iamshack @ Sep 18, 2014 -> 03:05 PM) You are diminishing their experience, first of all. And secondly, let's not pretend this is that simple. That statement is an oversimplification of the real debate/discussion that needs to occur. And that is what kind of discipline is appropriate? Is physical punishment of any kind appropriate. Are we saying I can't whack my kid on the back of the head with the back of my hand if I see him disrespect an elder or kick a dog or something? Are we saying that a parent doing that is doing more harm than one who calls his kid a jackass for doing the same? It isn't as if all our elders were beaten with sticks. There were varying forms of discipline/punishment that were culturally acceptable. What I believe they are trying to say is that not all of those forms of punishment equated to abusing your child, and actually may have instilled valuable qualities in them. As are the people you are defending. Instead of looking back at their experiences and thinking about how things could have gone differently, maybe for the positive, it's "If it happened to me, it has to be the right way."
-
QUOTE (iamshack @ Sep 18, 2014 -> 02:26 PM) This has nothing to do with you attacking anyone. And I am not defending anyone. I'm encouraging you to not be so offensive to those who don't share your opinion, or at the least, to substantiate your very strongly worded opinions with some sort of reason or logic. This notion that folks from previous generations who reference their experience with discipline need to "go away" is offensive to me. It offers very little to the conversation and doesn't particularly allow anyone to learn anything. I'm just supposed to agree with you and take your word for it. What does "My mama beat me and I think I turned out OK" offer to the conversation?
-
QUOTE (iamshack @ Sep 18, 2014 -> 12:06 PM) I despise these sorts of responses. Nothing against you personally, LH, but this is not an acceptable argument in this discussion. I agree with what I think you are trying to say, but no, they do not need to just go away. Believe it or not, not everything that is new is better than what is old, and not everything a future generation comes up with is correct while what the previous generation did was incorrect. It is probably pretty safe to say that utilizing corporal punishment, especially anything greater than "light" corporal punishment, has potentially more harmful psychological effects than helpful lessons learned. However, it seems to me with that there seems to come a trade-off in terms of a lack of discipline and respect taught to children. Yes, the asshole tone of my "go away" comment probably was a bit excessive and unhelpful. It's just that, "My mama did it and look at me now" is no reasoning. Had your mama not smacked you around, maybe you'd be an ever better person now, you don't know that. There's also plenty of kids out there whose entire lives were ruined by the same type of parenting. If you think your kind of discipline is acceptable and/or necessary as parents, please explain why you think that, don't just say its because you went through the same thing, which doesn't automatically make it OK.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Sep 18, 2014 -> 09:08 AM) Right, and that's the way I'm thinking. Gerhart, no matter how s***ty, is guaranteed to put up points at some point this year. AP is not. If you are 0-2 and your RB situation sucks, you have to hold on to Gerhart. IF AP comes back, earliest would likely be a few weeks, and you might be 0-6 by then anyway. -
QUOTE (Middle Buffalo @ Sep 17, 2014 -> 11:52 PM) So, I see/have heard this pro-spanking POV several times in the last few days (Wilbon, Barkley, Ditka). Each time the person did not condone Peterson's act, but they said that spanking was common when they were growing up as a form of discipline. I understand that they look at themselves now and see that they turned out ok, so there must be value in that form of discipline. I wonder, though, why they don't see the inconsistency. If spanking is an effective form of discipline, why does the person doling out the discipline have to do it more than once. Shouldn't one spanking be an effective deterrent to future bad behavior? The whole "I was hit or spanked as a child and I turned out fine" crowd just needs to go away. I'm sure as kids they also didn't sit in safe infant car seats, but they turned out fine, why should kids use them now?

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Sep 18, 2014 -> 08:09 AM) This is arguably one of the 10 greatest posts in Soxtalk history. I don't see how you could even argue that it isn't a top 10 all-time post.
