QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jun 7, 2014 -> 09:08 PM) I thought I was so cool when I scooped him up late-draft in fantasy. And you thought you were even cooler when he had a nearly 1.000 OPS after two weeks. Lillian was almost right.

QUOTE (ptatc @ Jun 7, 2014 -> 11:19 AM) Not a fan of three full days off from throwing during the week. The amount of cardio is great. I think it was Steve Stone that said pitching is such an unnatural body motion, the only way to prep the body for it is to pitch more and more. Your body needs to get used to throwing so hard, taking several days off makes it a sudden shock to the system. -
The thought of a multi-year deal worries me. I would have no problem with a one year deal though.

I'm really digging the slow motion camera views on the Challenge this season, but there still just seems to be something missing from this season. The draw format is great, but the people are boring or too whiny this year.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jun 5, 2014 -> 02:05 PM) If you had to start a playoff series tomorrow with Danks, Quintana, Sale and Verlander (assuming all are equally rested), what order are you putting them in? How about Scherzer, Sanchez, Porcello, Smyly, Verlander?

QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jun 4, 2014 -> 09:15 PM) I like this Abreu kid. He's too old, trade him for prospects

I will never forget the day he was body slammed by Pedro Martinez. RIP

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 4, 2014 -> 08:27 PM) Someone said it best the other day. The idea of trading Reed for a near-ready offensive player was great. However, the scouting of that player might be where the trouble lies. KW and Hahn have traded a lot of big league talent over the last 5 years with very little to how for it. It's hard to imagine getting less production that what they have received from trading Quentin, Swisher, Santos, Rios, Vazquez and Reed. So a 23 year old with 76 MLB at bats is a complete bust? I have no clue if Davidson will amount to anything, but come on now.

QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Jun 3, 2014 -> 07:48 PM) I was at both games 3 and 4. I remember game 3 was sold out and rocking. Game 4 wasn't even a sell out (though close), the top of the 300 level behind the nets and corners wasn't full. Where were you sitting? Do you remember the brawl in 329/330 at the very end of the game? I was in 326. And Brent Johnson was a 3rd defensemen that series, his puckhandling was ridiculous. A brawl does sound familiar but my memory is a bit vague. (There were a lot of roadies drank driving up 57). We were in the 300 near one of the empty corners. Watching game 3 they mentioned that plenty of tickets were still available, so road trip it was.

QUOTE (Soxfest @ Jun 2, 2014 -> 12:42 PM) According to Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports, the Astros have signed top first base prospect Jonathan Singleton to a five-year contract with three club options. The historic deal -- a first for a player with zero major league service time -- carries $10 million in guaranteed money and can be worth up to $35 million if all the options and incentives are triggered. Singleton, 22, will be promoted from Triple-A Oklahoma City before Tuesday's game against the Angels to take over as Houston's regular first baseman. He was sporting a .941 OPS, 14 home runs, and 43 RBI in 54 games this season at Triple-A and should be owned in all mixed fantasy leagues. The contract costs Singleton quite a bit of earning power and is a big win for the Astros' front office even if the kid doesn't completely meet the hype. Per Rotoworld I can't how many people are criticizing Singleton. Does the system suck? Yes, but complain about that, not a kid guaranteeing himself some major future finanical stability. Did he potentially cost himself millions? Of course. But if something goes wrong and he doesn't amount to much of a player, he still earned $10 million. I can't blame him for that. And he still has a chance for a major FA payday around 30 years old if he's a stud.

Do that many people still listen to baseball games on the radio? let alone when a team sucks that bad.

The Oakland Way, and how it can be applied to Sox
LittleHurt05 replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (iamshack @ Jun 3, 2014 -> 01:32 PM) I think there is something else at work in Oakland as well, and it is a positive symptom of their limited resources. As a result of Oakland's limited resources, they very rarely can afford to enter into large contracts. While this forces them to find players with some warts, it insulates them from two things: 1) disastrous long-term contracts, and 2) over-reliance on particular players due to those long-term contracts. Thus, Oakland always has contingency plans. They've always got another guy that can step in because they don't have prohibitive favorites at many positions. This allows for a more flexible roster, it probably creates better team chemistry, and it keeps them better prepared to address the unexpected or unknown. They aren't married to any particular method of doing things, because they can't afford to; their only chance of success demands being able to acclimate on the fly. I agree with this. People always assume that Beane or TB's Freidman would win so much if they had a NY or LA payroll, but I just don't think that's true. If they suddenly had all types of money to spend, that would change the way they play the game. It's much easier to throw money at a top FA to take care of today, instead of finding the diamonds in the rough or platooning. That leads to future problems. With the larger payroll comes larger expectations, so you need to win every year as well. If they take a few chances on cheaper lesser known guys and they don't pan out, they will hear about it. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 3, 2014 -> 03:36 PM) Someone who is 21 years old saw one playoff appearance from the time that they started elementary school, until the year before they won their first modern Cup. And that one playoff appearance was awful. We drove up from Champaign and bought tickets at the gate the day of for game 4.. The Hawks were in the midst of a like a 200+ minute goalless streak at the hands of Brent Johnson.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 3, 2014 -> 01:53 PM) If 2 of the final 4 teams and the teams that have won the last 2 stanley cups have these contracts...then maybe they're a long-term issue, but that's not selling me hard on them being a bad short-term idea. Actually neither of the last two Cup winners had such contracts, both extensions were signed after the goalie had just won the Cup. And Crawford's deal doesn't kick in until next season, so this season the Hawks weren't faced with any of the salary cap ramifications from the deal yet. Granted, this year's Stanley Cup winner is guaranteed to have a long-term goalie deal, although New York's goalie is one of the few that people think actually deserves that much money.

Mine: SP- Teheran RP- Petricka RP- Belianteces (spelling) C- Norris 1B- Abreu 2B- Dee Gordon 3B- Arenado SS- Alexei OF- Springer, Blackmon, Stanton How is Stanton a breakout player? He's averaged 30 homers a season for the first 4 seasons of his career and that's with missing 30-40 games a year.

QUOTE (ptatc @ Jun 2, 2014 -> 07:26 PM) The problem with this is that the theory is based on a player using the averages such as OBP to be succeesful. This works in the regular season where you get to face average or below average pitchers. This type of player has less of a chance in the playoffs against good to great pitchers which the playoff teams typically have. This is why they don't do as well in the playoffs. In a 7 game series the talent wins not playing the averages. Of course, going by the averages occasinally they do win. That's interesting. The baseball playoffs can be such a crapshoot and I hate to make judgements off such small sample sizes. That being said, something has to give if Oakland consistently loses in the playoffs, it might be more than luck and randomness. Of course I would take the Sox WS title over the A's zero titles in recent years, but given that the Sox have only made the playoffs one other time in 13 seasons, I can't really say that the Sox way is better than Oakland's. -
QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jun 3, 2014 -> 10:39 AM) I honestly don't think Verlander and Price are really even in the discussion anymore. Give me Wainwright, Tanaka, Hernandez, Teheran or Cueto over them at this point. Wainwright absolutely deserves to be in the top 5 right now
