  1. QUOTE (The Mighty Mite @ Jul 28, 2017 -> 03:31 PM) That's true and that was the norm for MLB in those years, usually big Friday night crowds, small Saturday crowds and big crowds on Sunday afternoons and usually a Double Header. I would bet that Saturday afternoons was the only day when the Cubs outdrew the Sox, why I don't know. No Saturday night games back then. My guess is that the work week was a lot different, most worked 9-5 jobs Monday through Friday, Saturday was the day that the old man would work around the house and do other chores but still listening to Bob Elson on the radio. As far as Sunday most everything was closed except drug stores and gas stations. Interesting, thanks for that information. It does look to be a recurring theme all season. I'm sure the doubleheader on most Sundays played a huge part too.
  2. QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Jul 28, 2017 -> 02:53 PM) Just last night I was going through some archived material (my summer project has been to organize all the stuff I have in printed form on the Sox in individual folders by season). I came across the front page of the Chicago Tribune sports section from June 14, 1957 it was the day after the huge "base-brawl" between the Yankees and Sox at Comiskey that had racial overtones, went for :30 minutes and saw five players ejected. Anyway on the bottom right side of the front page was a box with this headline: "Sox, Yanks draw 112,548...Giants, Cubs draw 8,518." Both teams had played a three game series. The fluctuations in attendance back then are crazy: https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/CH...le-scores.shtml May 28 vs. KC, Tuesday day game: 3,647 May 30 vs. CLE Thursday day doubleheader: 38,150 June 1 vs. DET : Saturday afternoon: 9,413 June 8 vs. BAL: Saturday afternoon: 5,642 June 11 vs. Yankees: Tuesday night: 49,114 June 12 vs. Yankees: Wednesday night: 40,033 Nobody went to games on Saturday afternoons back then?
  3. QUOTE (KagakuOtoko @ Jul 28, 2017 -> 11:44 AM) Not a law guy so I don't have a clue. Apparently these organizations are using his price tag as a reason for passing on him. Except teams haven't actually asked him how much money he wants. Hes never said that hes looking for starter or even top backup money.
  4. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 28, 2017 -> 10:57 AM) You should have told sox talk you were going. Surely somebody could have gotten you in cheaper than that? 151 bucks for a game. I guess the zoo is expensive now. That might have been similar costs. Movie woulda been much cheaper in the A/C. Don't know what the aquarium costs now or the museums. The zoo is still free in Chicago.
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 28, 2017 -> 10:21 AM) Chris Cotillo‏Verified account @ChrisCotillo 5m5 minutes ago Source confirms: Mariners trade Steve Cishek to Rays for Erasmo Ramirez. @Feinsand and @jonmorosi on it. Break up the Rays!!
  6. Good start for Jennings in a Rays jersey, two batters faced, two singles given up. ERA & WHIP are infinity. Fun with sample sizes
  7. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 24, 2017 -> 10:23 AM) Yeah, that was the last sports show I can think of in Chicago that didn't have an adversarial feel, or one of the guys just making up reasons to argue. It really seemed like three dudes just shooting the breeze. Except one dude wouldn't stop bragging about all the B-list celebrities he had hanging out in his extra fancy basement man cave. Come to think of it, Danny Mac basically became Mike North at the end.
  8. QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Jul 27, 2017 -> 11:00 PM) Zero playoff appearances in the '60s. Zero playoff appearances in the '70s. One playoff appearance, only one series, only one win, in the '80s. One playoff appearance, only one series, only two wins, in the '90s. THREE playoff appearance"s" in the '00s, with one World Series Championship; the other two appearances comprising one series each and only one win between the two. Zero playoff appearances in the '10s. Back to that again, the zero playoff appearance business. Failed ownership, or sub-par ownership? Take your pick. Neither has been ideal whatsoever for our beleaguered fan base. Look around the league and the four major sports though, how many owners have actually been great? Owners don't get fired and the majority suck. But that's capitalism and JR is going nowhere. I've been one if the biggest critics of JR on this site. His problem was never being cheap, the Sox have spent compared to their revenue, it was always just his blind loyalty. Now that he finally bought in to the rebuild, just sit back and enjoy for a little. You can be head of the Anti -JR movement as soon as it meets again
  9. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 27, 2017 -> 10:49 PM) I don't know why people say it doesn't matter. All seasons go down in the history books and if the rebuild doesn't result in excellence you better believe Jerry will remember the embarrassing records in 2017 and 2018. Better hope the lineup of Eloy in left, Robert in center, Rutherford in right; Burger at third, TA at short, Moncada at 2B and Abreu at first and Collins catcher and Avi DH to go with 5-6 outstanding arms equals 100 victory seasons. Most fans will remember the embarrassing seasons of 2009-2016, those were far far worse.
  10. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 26, 2017 -> 03:04 PM) 45 years of failed ownership...... Failed is harsh. 45 years of sub-par ownership is more realistic
  11. QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ Jul 27, 2017 -> 10:22 PM) The Sox are a pretty disgusting organization, that's for sure. Yet we are all still here posting about them day after day, go figure.
  12. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 27, 2017 -> 10:05 PM) It's really disgusting to have a team this bad. Team has won one game since Q left. It's way more disgusting to spend the money they did from 2009-2016 and not make the playoffs once.
  13. QUOTE (Sox-35th @ Jul 27, 2017 -> 08:19 PM) This is the lineup we will look back at in 2020 and be like "remember that mess?" As opposed to the Rios and Dunn lineups of the early 2010s? Hitting-wise, it's been an incredibly bad decade for this franchise. That's why Sale and Q had to be traded
  14. Bummer, anyone but Hamilton Porter. At least I can stop watching unless Moncada bats
  15. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 27, 2017 -> 05:45 PM) Hypothetical: Pelfrey gets into the 5th inning with the game close. You're the manager. The Cubs lineup turns over and starts its 3rd time through. Pelfrey gives up a hit to the leadoff man. Who do you trust more...Mike Pelfrey the 3rd time through the order or the current White Sox bullpen? And no, Death is not an option. Miguel Gonzalez. This is the most important game of the Sox season. He can take the next two weeks off.

  18. QUOTE (Sox-35th @ Jul 27, 2017 -> 03:24 PM) Also, pitcher helmets Not just helmets, maybe even face masks by then.
  19. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 27, 2017 -> 03:37 PM) CSN Chicago‏Verified account @CSNChicago 16m16 minutes ago Shunning hypotheticals, #Bears aren’t setting a timetable for Pernell McPhee: http://bit.ly/2v2jjAo Amazing pass rusher when he's on the field... The Ravens knew what they were doing when they kept him a 3rd player only I guess
  20. Alright Anthony, just help us keep this game from getting out of hand, we are only down 14.
  21. Wow, Hahn is not f***ing around. Although, this is an obvious Kenny move, trading for the brother of an ex-White Sox player.
  22. Two weeks ago I thought the Phillies had the #1 pick in the bag, but I'm not so sure anymore. Lots of baseball left to be played.
