We were talking about Boston Smith being too much for someone like Peralta, who is having just as bad of a year as Castillo. But now we gave up Smith and have to risk paying Castillo $30 million over the next 1.5 years. Sure, Dominguez offsets some of that, but not enough. Peralta is also making only $8 mil this year, so his pro rated contract would be extremely cheap.

He's given up 16 homers this year. He would have given up 2 more at the Rate based on Baseball Savant's expected home runs.

Getting anyone to take that contract was a bonus for the M's.

Both would be big sell high guys. But you'd also lose basically all your bullpen stability.

Looking at his numbers a bit more...Castillo has a a 5.37 FIP away from Seattle this year. That's Fedde levels of bad. Unless they think they can fix him, it's hard to justify this trade without getting some money back to cover his salary.

On Baseball Trade Values (take this with a grain of salt), Dominguez has -$10 mil surplus value and Castillo is at -$-17 mil. I'm not sure how much value Smith has, but it's probably close to $5-10 mil depending on how you value him. Unless we're getting some money back, we lost on this trade from a surplus value perspective.

Us taking on all the salary wouldn't make a lot of sense.

So he's making $24 mil next year. You trade Dominguez's salary of $10 million and you're effectively paying him $14 million next year. If he's bad, he's not throwing 180 innings anyways, so the vesting option is whatever.

Don't like giving up Smith, but Castillo is controllable and has a good track record, even if he has been on a downward trajectory. The stuff is still really good and he's had a rough year. But they must think they can turn him around. Seranthony just started to turn it around, but in case he doesn't, we also dump his $10 million owed next year. I do wonder how much money we get back in cash on this.
