  1. There's a lot of chatter about Morales and Schierholtz for Pittsburgh. That might be a better scenario for Pirates. They could get Kendrys Morales to play 1B and Schierholtz to platoon with Tabata in RF and it's still cheaper than Rios.
  2. Rowdy Tellez signed with Toronto. He is a guy that I really liked. Blue Jays gave him $850k as a 30th rounder.
  3. QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Jul 14, 2013 -> 09:56 AM) What would be better, making a package offer of two or more of our veterans OR making separate deals with different teams for individual players? Would we have a better chance of obtaining top 20 prospects by combining vets? It depends. I wouldn't trade Rios and Ramirez for example. That would be quite a haul and most teams would be unwilling to give up for both. Same goes for Peavy. Sox might be able to extend the value of a deal by adding Lindstrom or De Aza in a deal with one of the position players. Crain is another guy. With Crain's injury, it is possible he'd be packaged. If Pittsburgh wanted Rios, they may like Crain as well giving them the best bullpen in NL and upping the ante as far as prospects the White Sox could receive.
  4. QUOTE (beck72 @ Jul 13, 2013 -> 01:31 PM) If the Cardinals are looking at Alexei, and get him, and the Pirates miss out on him, and they do another late season fade, I think Pitt fans will go crazy. Not only can they improve their team, but they can potentially keep the Cards from improving. The Pirates would seemingly give the sox the biggest return for Alexei. Mercer also has been playing 2b, which has been another weak spot for Pitt. as well. They can keep him-even though he's had like 1 XBH the last month. I disagree. I just spent a week in Pittsburgh. Most of their fans don't want to trade anything of value to get anyone. Not even Kingham, Josh Bell, or Hanson.
  5. Brandon Jacobs will be heading to Birmingham according Buddy Bell on WhiteSox Weekly. Said Mitchell, Trayce, and Walker will remain there as well. Mentioned that someone will have to DH every day.
  6. QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Jul 13, 2013 -> 12:57 PM) I think if we packaged Alexei and Thorton to the Cardinals for Kolten Wong and Martinez or Wacha, or along the lines, people would be ecstatic. I am don't have a problem with the value of the return, I just don't think it's the right type of player. I don't think that package brings you back one of those pitchers though.
  7. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jul 13, 2013 -> 11:06 AM) I expected Thornton to get traded but I think we could have gotten more. MLB Network guys said the same thing. Boston has a lot of young OF talent in the minors. Plus WE gave Boston money when everyone says we are maxed out I would imagine that $750,000 is going towards the buyout. This was a fine return for Thornton. Hahn said that this was the best piece that was offered. Not surprising given the fact that Thornton is a 37 year old LHP with declining stuff. I am not sure what people expected.
  8. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 13, 2013 -> 10:53 AM) Is Rios/Ramirez really that much of an upgrade over Tabata/Mercer right now? Absolutely. Rios is a huge upgrade. He adds another bat to the middle of that lineup and he is a much better OF than Tabata. Ramirez is a lot better defensively than Mercer and is a much better offensive player than Barmes. I think they would be betting on Ramirez to hit like he did in prior years. I would think that Pittsburgh would be much more interested in Rios than Ramirez though. They don't need Ramirez for the next 3 seasons. They do have Alen Hanson in the minor leagues and Mercer is fine for now. Rios would be a big upgrade though. I would like to see Tabata as part of the package coming back to the Sox.
  9. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 13, 2013 -> 10:17 AM) It looks like they've been platooning Garrett Jones and Gaby Sanchez at 1b. Sanchez had a good start to the season but his numbers now look pretty rotten. That does look like the position where they could use a bat. Pittsburgh uses a combination of Garrett Jones, Travis Snider, Jose Tabata, and Gaby Sanchez for 1B/RF. They use Mercer/Barmes at SS. Those are the spots to upgrade. They could find a 1B or RF. Rios is a perfect fit for them because it allows them to just play Sanchez/Jones at 1B. Obviously they'd never take on this much money but if they had Dunn at 1B and Rios is RF they'd be the favorites in the national league. McCutchen and Marte are very exciting players. However, Alvarez is the only consistent power threat on their team.
  10. QUOTE (mike65 @ Jul 13, 2013 -> 08:41 AM) Cardinal fan, again. Buster Olney tweeted yesterday that the Cardinals and Indians were again discussing Asdrubal Cabrera. While I am sure that such discussions have taken place, I think the results will be like last winter. The Indians still want one of the Cardinal good young pitchers - Wacha, Miller, Rosenthal, or Martinez - and I am pretty sure the Cardinals will not do that. All roads lead back to the White Sox, IMO. The question is what Hahn would want in return? I have tried to play GM with my neighbor who is a lifelong White Sox fan. Nothing that I have suggested pleases him so I feel for Mozeliak - Hahn. I did think that the White Sox would have gotten slightly more for Thornton so now I am really confused. I have thought that Wong + one (lower level) should do it but no according to my neighbor. What say all of you? Mike here is what I will say. Taveras or all of the high level young pitching is an unrealistic return for Alexei. However, If I were Rick Hahn I would be asking for Matt Adams. I would probably take a deal built around Wong and another mid level prospect or 2 but that deal would take until the deadline. Adams is the type of guy that White Sox need to acquire in these deals. That may be too steep for St. Louis but that's what I'd ask for.
  11. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 12, 2013 -> 11:35 PM) Yes, scary. But you must admit Thornton wasn't exactly effective and he was only going to get worse. Great post, Harry. How can you say we got good value? This guy we got is a total longshot. Granted, I'd rather acquire a hitter than a pitcher, but Jacobs is not exactly a prime prospect. Greg this is a good trade. Not sure what you wanted here. I think you threw out the blanket statement a week ago that they'd get a couple of 10 rounders for Crain. Jacobs was a 10th round pick. Not relevant at all. Just thought I'd mention it.
  12. QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Jul 12, 2013 -> 11:44 PM) Is there anything such as a low ceiling high floor guy? If so, let's target that guy. Why would you want that? Are you aspiring to be Jerry Angelo? That's what he always said. Targeting low ceiling high floor guys doesn't win you the World Series. This trade was good. Matt Thornton is done. Thornton should have been traded 2 years imo.
  13. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jul 12, 2013 -> 05:17 PM) http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/boston-...deadline-071213 I bet Thornton and Lindstrom both go quickly after the break. I asked Pete Abraham on twitter what he thought about a potential Matt Thornton trade return. He mentioned LHP Drake Britton and 3B Michael Almanzar. That level of prospect. Britton is rated as the 12th best prospect in the system according to BA.
  14. http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/boston-...deadline-071213 I bet Thornton and Lindstrom both go quickly after the break.
  15. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 12, 2013 -> 11:05 AM) Never going to get that much, and I don't know why Arizona would trade Didi for Alexei. All things considered, he's been really good for the DBacks and Alexei would be a downgrade. They want Peavy, and I'd be surprised if they want more than that...maybe a reliever. Also, I wouldn't be surprised to see them ask for Chris Owings too. Is Chris Owings and Randall Delgado a good return for Peavy at this point? No surprise that Kevin Towers would like Peavy back.
  16. Would you guys give Beckham a 3 year deal at $10 million right now? Would he even take it? Or are you guys saying that we should wait and sign him to like a 5-6 year below market at season's end if he keeps this up? Either way, he'd still be a tradeable asset whenever.
  17. QUOTE (Paulstar @ Jul 12, 2013 -> 12:56 AM) You have to assume that the player that probably fell out of favor moreso than anyone else has to be De Aza. He has been brutal this year, which is saying something considering he has been one of the most productive offensive players on an offensively challenged team. Yeah I think you are right. bucket has been right on it in the past and this fits. It just seems like De Aza hasn't taken to coaching at all. Same mistakes in OF. Same bad approach too often at the dish. OTOH, I don't think De Aza is a leadoff hitter and he's actually quite productive for what he should be. I would actually be surprised if he's on the team in August at this point.
  18. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 11, 2013 -> 10:24 PM) I don't want to over-react, but I like what I see in Phegley. I loved after today's victory over Detroit he stood out on the field and greeted every Sox player as they ran past him toward the dugout. I'm thinking out of all our players, he at least acts like he cares more than anybody else. Some of you don't care about intangibles ... I like his intangibles. Now for his performance. He has four hits in 20 at bats. Three have been home runs. Today's homer won a game. Now an optimist could love his eight RBIs. A pessimist could be bummed by his six strikeouts against no walks and say he's just another lift and pull member of the White Sox (albeit it's just 20 at bats). At the risk of your wrath (people are going to get all mad and say we're talking about 20 measly at bats), I want to ask you ... Is Josh Phegley going to be a stud?? Or another lift and pull .210 type hitter? I like Hawk's comparison to Brian Downing. I like Phegley. Do you?? Brian Downing is a bad comparison unless Phegley is getting on the juice soon
  19. QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Jul 11, 2013 -> 10:56 PM) Here's what I've been told...(one source), FWIW - Close on a couple deals (real names exchanged) - Sale is not untouchable - Several guys are on their way out just to be gone (out of favor with RV) Thanks bucket. I was waiting for you or Rock to give us something. Appreciate it man.
  20. This thread is funny. It's ridiculous that some of you guys were told at a young age that you have to hate the Cubs just because that it is seriously flawing your judgment here. I am a lifelong Sox fan and I know that if the Sox had Bryant, Almora, Baez, and Soler people on this board would be doing cartwheels. They are 4 of the top 30 prospects in baseball. But nah they are on that evil northside team that my parents told me to hate when I was younger. They can't be any good.
  21. QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Jul 11, 2013 -> 09:15 AM) The Cubs will get Ellsbury. I don't think the Cubs will be in on Ellsbury for that price. They will not be going into the free agent market for big name guys yet. Maybe some starting pitching though. I have seen Almora 4 times this year and while he will take another 2-3 years to reach the majors, I wouldn't be giving Ellsbury the 5 year deal that he will be seeking.
  22. QUOTE (scs787 @ Jul 11, 2013 -> 01:57 PM) Dan Haren, who is older, had less time on his contract, and was probably being paid more got the #12 prospect in all of baseball, Tyler Skaggs, and another promising LHP in Patrick Corbin. Also in that deal was Joe Saunders, who was a competent ML back of the rotation starter I'd expect more than that for Sale. Not even that deal. I stated in the 1st page of the thread. Look at the first Haren deal that brought him to Arizona. Brett Anderson, Carlos Gonzalez, Chris Carter, Aaron Cunningham, Dana Eveland, and Greg Smith. And that was for Haren with 2 more years of control. Sale would cost even more than that. He is one of the top 5 pitchers in the AL. Is 24 years old. And is locked up for the next 7 seasons for just under $60 million. That is a f***ing robbery. His contract may be the best in all of baseball. Jake, i don't think your package is good enough. It's good but his contract is so awesome that the Sox would need more. More out of that great St. Louis system is probably not realistic but that's what it would take.

QUOTE (Brian @ Jul 11, 2013 -> 03:56 AM) Leroy is cool but Ty is a hack. Don't watch RW at all but Anastasia makes me wish I did. Anastasia had a weird boyfriend back home during the current season. She was never really the focal point of the previous season. She kind of just sat back and let everyone else act like idiots on camera.

QUOTE (Brian @ Jul 11, 2013 -> 07:48 AM) I may hate Frank more than I ever hated Johnny. Poor Emily will have to carry that hag, Paula. I remember Knight and Preston from last year and they both suck. Didn't watch their RW Season. Bet it was boring. Their season was actually really good. Knight is hilarious. He's an idiot but entertaining. He just always liked to get a rise out of everyone. He was dating Gemmye during the season which made things weird. I think he will find a way to hang around because he will be in on all of the drama.
