  1. He’s reporting what he heard though and was called out for it. I think his response is appropriate as there isn’t a fact to report here.
  2. I got to disagree here. Nolan Arenado would have made roughly $50M to $55M over his seven years of team control had he competed the arbitration process this year. Josh Donaldson, a top 3 player in all of baseball and former MVP, made ~$57M in his seven controllable seasons. Kris Bryant, one of the most impactful young players and a former MVP winner, will have made $26M over his first five years of team control. If he can return to superstar form, he can probably beat the $52M guarantee I put together for Eloy by ~$15M or do (and that’s far from a guarantee). The point here is a $52M commitment is basically assuming Eloy is a top 10 player from the get-go. While that’s more than possible, he’ll need to hit like JD Martinez to get there because his defense will be non value add at best. For Eloy to lock that in prior to ever playing a pro game would be a huge coup for him IMO. Whether that’s worth sacrificing two free agency seasons is up for debate, but I simply can’t agree he’d be likely out-earn than $52M, especially when you consider his history of minor health issues.
  3. I’m not sure I’m following here, but the luxury tax implications only matter to us in the event we decide to trade Eloy to a tax paying team (which suggests things have gone wrong). We ourselves will never be tax payers under Reinsdorf and will be unable to take advantage of his salary being higher than his AAV during our competitive window.
  4. Yeah, I think you need two option years. I’m hoping Hector misunderstood and the extension is for the eight years following this season. Something like the following structure would be worthwhile for the Sox: 2019: $500K (current deal) 2020: $1.5M 2021: $3.0M 2022: $8.0M 2023: $10.0M 2024: $13.0M 2025: $17.0M 2026: $21.0M (club option) 2027: $26.0M (club option) The guaranteed money shakes out to be ~$53M over the seven years of control we already have him for (~2x the guarantee Tim got), but comes with comes with two not-cheap club options that allow us to control him through his age 30 season. Honestly, if it’s not something like the above and we only get one option, I’ll go on record and say it is too player friendly. I get how valuable even one option year is, but we’re practically assuming he’s Kris Bryant otherwise and given Eloy’s defensive limitations that seems a bit silly. I wouldn’t be outraged by it, but it would support the idea our front office is not very good or is operating with another agenda in mind.
  5. I do kind of worry the Sox offer some ridiculous contract here to help dispose the “the Sox are cheap” notion after the whole Machado fiasco. The $100M figure does seem a bit too high for one additional year of control (unless they’re aware of upcoming CBA changes) and way too convenient for Hahn to say “look, we said the money will be spent, here’s our first nine figure contract”.
  6. The luxury tax implications don’t matter here because we won’t be going above $200M in payroll while Reinsdorf is still alive. Also, front-loading a contract never makes sense due to the time value of money. We’d be better off taking any excess cash, investing it at some rate of return, and effectively paying less in the future.
  7. Yup, it will be yet another kick to the balls.
  8. I like Hector and really want to believe (depending on the specifics), but it’s really odd nothing has come out yet from anywhere else.
  9. Dumb question, but couldn’t this extension start after the 2019 season? I’m assumjng Eloy already has a major league contract for 2019 by being on the 40 man roster and an 8/$100M extension makes much more sense if we still get next year dirt cheap.
  10. Dunning might need TJS, but at least Santana is coming along nicely! All is well in the Sox universe!
  11. D just barely etching out the F for first place. I did my part and voted F.
  12. First, I’m not arguing that framing is as valuable as BP thinks it is, but rather am acknowledging there is some value to it that FG is admittedly is ignoring. To call Narvaez a 2 win player is flat out wrong unless you want to completely ignore one of his biggest weaknesses Second, I was trying to call out Caulfield for blatantly stealing your argument and representing it as his own. I’ll own up to throwing in the “Bot” in there because I do sometimes wonder if you are actually human or some sort of algorithm.
  13. Really? Dude missed all of last year with a different injury correct? Or at least it wasn’t severe enough to need surgery right?
  14. I don’t even know what you’re arguing at this point, but Hahn mid-reading the market doesn’t reflect a “we suck” tax it reflects a “our GM sucks” issue. There is zero evidence to suggest free agents are demanding more from us than other clubs, which is the point I’m making. I’m not sure how this is even an argument.
  15. This may be your dumbest post yet and proves you’re on some negativity-fueled argument bender right now. You’re way too smart of a poster to actually believe this nonsense.
  16. Are these serious questions? Come on dude, it takes two sides to do a deal. I’d love to extend Moncada, but he already has $32M in the bank. Why in the fuck would we extend a broken ass Giolito? And pitchers generally speaking are far more volatile than top 5 positional prospects, so I don’t think you’d ever offer one a pre-majors extension like this, even for a guy who is as talented as Kopech. I really think you’re just arguing to argue at this point.
  17. WTF...like I have no ide what this post even means. What does spending $100M on Eloy have to do with any of the names you just mentioned? How does this support your claim it’s idiotic to spend $100M on a guy who needs to “hit like Ramirez” to be valuable? Also, please stop pretending Narvaez is a 2 win player just because BaltaBot keeps saying it in his endless request to rip the Colome trade.
  18. I’m not defending Hahn’s offseason (it really did suck), but Alonso & Nova weren’t free agents so it’s wrong to say we paid a “we suck” tax for those guys. And we all know why Hahn added Jay & Alonso, so let’s not pretend those moves were anything but lame attempts to make the White Sox more attractive to Machado. I do agree Hahn completely mid-read the SP market with Nova as Gonzalez would be a significantly better option at a similar or lower price right now.
  19. Jesus Christ...you’re really starting to lose it
  20. Who did we pay double for? Jon Jay got the “Machado friends with benefits” tax, not the “we suck” tax. McCann probably got too much, but that’s because we overvalued him and/or mis-read the catcher market. I don’t view Herrera or Santana as big over-pays either.
  21. Why, don’t you love being tortured for months and then coming up empty-handed?
