  1. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 15, 2011 -> 12:55 PM) I feel like that's pretty much a normal game for him except no one swung. I remember hearing either Steve Stone or Ed Farmer say that you could go to the plate without a bat and most of the time count on him throwing 4 balls before he throws 3 strikes.
  2. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 15, 2011 -> 02:23 PM) You have said multiple times that you would have gone out of your way to commit an illegal action if you were on that jury because of your belief. That is the textbook definition of vigilante. I'm not quite sure how we got from voting "guilty" as part of a 12-person jury to wanting to intact vigilante justice. If Greg was on the jury and truly believed she was guilty the very best he could have accomplished was a hung jury.

    Mac vs. PC

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jul 15, 2011 -> 10:10 AM) I took both JCL and Cobol in college...hated both. I hate mainframes and the outdated code that rides on them. I vowed to never program in COBOL or anything related to mainframes after graduation...and I've kept that promise. COBOL was the first language I learned and I took to it pretty well. I had a harder time with Visual Basic and C for some reason. I been using JCL for about 10 years now but I just recently learned how to create emails with it by incorporating HTML into it.

    Mac vs. PC

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 15, 2011 -> 09:57 AM) Wow, thats rare. Most guys i know that can write in COBOL are over 50. I tell my clients I may be one of the younger folks they meet that knows C++ When I was in college they were still teaching C. Then 10 years later I went back and tried to take an Advanced C++ class. That was rough. I still don't really have a good grasp on it. I'm much better with older mainframe stuff. Even languages most people have never heard of like PL/1 and Natural.

    Mac vs. PC

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jul 15, 2011 -> 08:51 AM) A lot of them do this because they get education discounts from Apple, or even donations for free computers...and since you can run either OSX or Windows on a Mac, if you have the money, you get the best of both worlds. I witnessed this very problem when I was in college, and I actually raised concern to the school about it at the time (which was ignored). To this day I tell students I meet that in the computer science arena, there is no room for solely learning outdated computers/materials/tools, it's detrimental to the students who will be entering the real world with outdated knowledge. I tell that that in addition to what you learn at school, be sure to do things at home, on your own, in order to learn the most up to date methods, etc. While it's not always bad if you want to begin working for an organization that never updates anything...it's counter to what this industry represents. When I was in college, they were giving COBOL classes because that's what much of the corporate world used at the time...and while that was useful for a time, it's simply behind the curve. IMO, students need to be AHEAD of the curve, or at the very least, with the curve. Students shouldn't be learning on Windows XP...it's nearly a decade old. They should be learning on Windows 7. I was hired for my current job 1.5 years ago mostly because I know COBOL and I'm still under 40. I guess I'm one of the rare ones. The last 2 programmers they hired didn't know any COBOL at all. But they need younger people to take over when everyone starts retiring in the next 10 years.
  6. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 15, 2011 -> 09:15 AM) That review is correct that a Juror can't bring outside items into the deliberations without permission, but the law regarding what jurors can do as far as I understand it is far less open and shut than is presented there. Although judges can give substantial amounts of guidance about the rules jurors can follow, a juror actually has wide latitude to decide how to go about considering a case. I didn't know how accurate it was considering the source but I thought it was interesting. It's been awhile since I've seen the movie. It was in an English class during my sophomore year.
  7. QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ Jul 14, 2011 -> 06:12 PM) I think Greg needs to read 12 Angry Men or whatever that book is called, that seemed like a pretty easy guilty verdict they were talking about too. 8. This guy is arguably getting more by just giving the ball back to Jeter than he would have if he'd have kept it and sold it. Suddenly companies are lining up to give him stuff and help pay off his debt and tons of TV and radio shows want to talk to him.
  9. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jul 13, 2011 -> 08:52 AM) It's kinda hard, you either destroy the redbox and take everything, or you need a credit card to get the game rented. Credit cards tend to be linked to personal info and get charged when you don't return something. That's why you steal er... borrow someone else's card first.
  10. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 12, 2011 -> 01:52 PM) I'm sure Jordan feels much like he should be more tolerant with a couple of hundred posts telling what a bigot he is.... Honestly, if he really did hate gay people, I am not really sure that a lot of this thread would do to change his mind. Getting slammed from a couple of dozen different people at once isn't exactly an invitation to open your mind. I’m not necessarily trying to change his mind as much as trying to understand his point. His admitting that he thinks people actually choose to be gay made a big difference. Like his kid would do that just to be different or to shame him in some way on purpose. Now I would be upset if my child grew up and chose to become a serial killer or a child molester. Although I have read that people like that have a chemical imbalance in their brain so maybe that’s not much of a choice either. Either way I’m still trying to figure out the strawman argument of not wanting to be in the same house as 2 gay men while they are having sex. I wonder if it would be different if it were a straight couple. Or 2 lesbians?
  11. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 12, 2011 -> 12:20 PM) Would this apply to straight roommates? What if you didn't hear them? Or is it just the thought that it could be or is happening? eta I don't want to hear or see gay sex either, that's not the issue here. I'm still waiting for an answer to this.

  13. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jul 12, 2011 -> 12:21 PM) I do think it's gross. But I can accept if others choose that way. I could never accept my kin choosing that way. I'd feel responsible. Like I did something wrong. And like I said earlier, it would hurt me to know that I would never see a grandchild or that the family name dies (assuming I only had one kid) when he died. There are such things as adoption and even surrogate mothers if you want the actual bloodline to continue. The kid can have whatever name the parents want to give him/her.
  14. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jul 12, 2011 -> 11:01 AM) Hey, you gotta take the good with the bad when you make that choice. And I'll never believe for a second that people are born gay. GMAB. Mankind would end if everybody were gay. I believe it's a combination of environment, influences, lack of a strong male figure, boredom, curiosity (this is almost always the case with women), etc. This actually makes your posts make a ton more sense now. I don't agree that it's a choice though.
  15. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jul 12, 2011 -> 10:45 AM) That's not my problem. I didn't say anything outlandish or vulgar. I didn't discount it. But I can tell you're getting a little worked up. Nobody said a public display. But s***, if it's midnight and they're in the room doin' their thing and I'm in the other room and I heard moaning and s*** going on, yeah, that would bother me. FWIW, there are tons of hetero (both male and female) that I don't want to think about having sex in the next room either.
  16. QUOTE (Tex @ Jul 12, 2011 -> 10:10 AM) People should have the right to offend as many people as they like, but they have to take the criticism that follows. If by now you don't know that a sizable group of people find using gay for stupid offensive, then you live under a rock or something. Be offensive, but don't whine when people call you out on it.
  17. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jul 12, 2011 -> 09:52 AM) I think he means normal in this case in the typical view of society at large via majority acceptance. My point is this -- if I can even put this into words effectively -- it's not only him that thinks a "normal kid" isn't gay/lesbian, because this is a social norm by majority as accepted by society at large. In this regard, people tend to relate societal "norms" as what the majority happen to be, and in this case, that's straight. Which would make non-straights fall in the non-normal category, BUT, that's not to say they're not normal people as individuals, but in relation to society they aren't. ^^ I hope that comes off as I intended it and can be understood. I don't think the bulk of society is anti-gay or anti-lesbian because they regard straight as the norm, and gay/lesbian as something else...it is what it is. People define "normal" based on their surroundings and what they are used to. Go to some country where they eat dogs and the people there think it's perfectly normal. Yet in this country I'd assume most people would think it's really weird.
  18. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 09:51 PM) I'm not so sure it is... I used to think it is when I was in middle school, but I didn't know any better. Maybe some people choose to be gay (don't really know why they would if they didn't like men), but I'm absolutely positive that the majority of gay men are gay because they like other men. I'm pretty sure it's something you're born with. You're either gay or you're not. Sometimes you can tell pretty early. One of the neighborhood kids my wife grew up with always wanted to play with my wife's barbies. When they would play "house", he always wanted to be the mom. He finally came out in HS to the surprise of no one.
  19. QUOTE (FlySox87 @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 08:38 PM) I wouldn't want a lesbian daughter either. And who are you to tell me how to feel? I'm not gonna judge you for being an atheist (or SoxBadger, if you're not atheist), but you're going to judge me for how I choose to raise my kids? That's pretty arrogant. Whatever dude, you're not going to guilt trip me for wanting a normal kid. This says more about you than any other post you've made here.
  20. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 07:40 PM) WOW! I was in Iowa last night (for my job interview this morning). I slept in the basement, so I slept through most of it. I had no idea how nasty it had gotten until I woke up and my mother-in-law said at 4am she almost came to the basement. If my wife hadn't called me and told me what happened I wouldn't have had any idea a storm came through. It was bright and sunny when I walked into work at 7:50 AM and it was bright and sunny when I left at 5:00 PM. When I drove home last night I saw trees and power lines down everywhere and even a couple of large billboards were knocked over. All the larger grocery stores in Rockford were without power. I ran to Wal-Mart later last night and they were throwing out ALL of their frozen goods.
  21. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 10:56 AM) Still trying to decide which one I liked more, Bad Teacher or Horrible Bosses. I guess I'd have to go with Horrible Bosses simply because the ensemble of talent (Foxx, Spacey, Farrell, Aniston, Sutherland) in that movie. Maybe it's because Justin Timberlake's character was so over the top annoying...and Lucy Punch (the teacher across the hallway) was great for awhile...but her act grew thin too as the movie went on. Finally, there's just no way that any teacher (even in the worst public school in America) could have gotten away with all those things. When I started teaching 2002, you had to get permission from 2-3 different people in the building (instructional coach/at least one Vice Principal) just to show a movie ONCE, in a single period, and you had to write an extensive lesson plan linking it to your curriculum/textbook. When I was a senior we watched "War Games" for our final in one class. I think it was called "Advanced Computer Concepts" or something like that. Everybody got an A on their final.
  22. QUOTE (SouthSideTeacher @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 02:44 AM) Is it wrong that I'm not so much bothered by WHAT he wrote in the dirt as I am that he found the time (and in-game 'focus') to dig around in the dirt like a silly 8-year-old? I'm all for the shaving cream interview pies and practical jokes when the players are earning their paychecks, but I'm simply OVER these (slumping--or just not giving a crap anymore?) guys goofing all all the g**damned time. PS: I'm usually a very nice girl, really. For years I've been criticized for having 'too much hope' and drinking the kool-aid. By now though, this team's broken my heart so many times I feel like I'm becoming a cynical b**** as a result. I'll try to keep the posts more positive in nature from now on. FWIW, they are playing a boys game. If you can't have a little fun while playing it, you are in the wrong profession. It probably took him 10-15 seconds to do it between innings while the pitcher was warming up.
  23. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jul 7, 2011 -> 04:50 PM) So what is the rule going to be, child missing 10 hours, child missing 24 houirs? What constitutes missing? If I tell my parents Im going over to Joe's house and Ill be staying there, when do they have to report me missing? I believe the rule right now is that you cant file a missing persons report until atleast 24 hours have passed. It just seems to be an overreaction. I personally think the last thing we need is more laws, we just need smarter govt. If nothing else it should fall under child neglect. I really haven't followed this case at all but did she ever have an explanation of why she didn't report the kid missing for a month?
  24. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Jul 8, 2011 -> 10:44 AM) Even worse than losing 1 game to them? The defeatist attitude coming from the team general. He's basically conceding that a team behind them in the standings is better. And this after the 1st game of an important 4 game series. There are many things you can criticize ozzie for but one thing he is not and that is a loser, or a guy who takes losing well. I'm pretty stunned by his remarks and attitude. I was really expecting to hear the opposite, even if the words ring empty I expect him to be ready to kill someone. I don't get it. I've never seen one team get in the heads of the opposing players as much as the Twins have the Sox.
  25. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 8, 2011 -> 10:21 AM) Intentionally hanging a jury because you think there might be more evidence for a later trial? Well obviously you don't come out and say it right out loud. But a number of them are convinced that she's not innocent.
