  1. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 2, 2011 -> 10:34 AM) Working on punch cards? Slightly more advanced than that. COBOL on a green screen.
  2. I'm making changes to a computer program at work and I just noticed that it was originally created less than a month before my first birthday.
  3. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ May 30, 2011 -> 07:27 PM) Person A is at fault for 1. placing them on the car and forgetting about them and 2. for buying $200 sunglasses. This. $200 for sunglasses? Do they get cable or something?
  4. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 27, 2011 -> 03:52 PM) charcoal chimney This one is money. I've got two of those things and they really help IMO. One is larger and I have to flip it over when the coals are ready. The other one is a little smaller but the piece inside that holds the charcoal is on a hinge and flips down to let them drop out the bottom when they are ready.
  5. QUOTE (Yoda @ May 27, 2011 -> 01:27 PM) So was this thread started just out of speculation or has some legit source come out of the wood work to speak of how we’ll change the only thing that has been consistent so far this season (the starting rotation)? Really don’t feel like reading six pages of could-be scenarios. There's a quote from Ozzie in the 8th post.
  6. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ May 27, 2011 -> 09:00 AM) http://www.suntimes.com/sports/baseball/wh...own-in-pen.html Kill me now. Yeah, let's put our best starter in the pen that will help this club win more games. So so so stupid. I don't care he isn't yet established, but moving him while he is going strong is just dumb. If he goes out and gets bombed the next two starts, that would be more acceptable, but for Ozzie to talk about this s*** now just shows what a moron he is. Is it possible for our idiot manager to just say nothing and say we'll cross that bridge when we get to it? And on a sidenote, how many more starts did Juan Pierre buy himself with a lucky ass game-winning single? It's funny hearing this right after hearing Don Cooper say he doesn't know anything about going back to the 5-man rotation.
  7. QUOTE (Reddy @ May 26, 2011 -> 05:42 PM) answer me this: fair catch in football. what's the difference here? there should be a rule against blocking the plate. might suck when you lose a game like that, but it could save careers, and that's more important in the long run. In football the defender it trying to hit the player with the ball. In baseball the runner is trying to hit the plate, not the catcher. If the catcher sets up on top of the plate he has to know there's a chance that the runner will try to move him out of the way to tag the plate.
  8. Clueless higher-ups making dumb decisions and then are shocked to learn that said decisions lead to lost business and/or employees? Sounds about right. My last place of employment decided to merge with a competitor and move all their work to Florida. Then proceeded to lose 40% of their clients who were unhappy with the move.
  9. Yea, I had a history with this manager from another store I worked at within the same company. We didn't exactly get along then either. I had actually transferred out of the first store to follow another manager that I actually liked that had transferred over before me. It was night and day difference between the two managers. Then the manager I got along with got promoted and the one I didn't like took his place.
  10. I remember when I worked retail if I had to switch with someone we always had to get approval from management first. Typically everyone had a "regular" schedule so you more or less knew when you were going to be scheduled and could plan around it. There were a few times at different jobs that we would get a new manager on a power trip and he would change the schedule around without telling anyone. So it got to the point where I worked the same days every single week and wouldn't even bother looking at the schedule. Then one day I show up and the manager says "You're not supposed to be here yet." Well I've worked on this day at this time the entire time I've worked here. Thanks for letting me know jackass.
  11. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ May 24, 2011 -> 10:35 AM) Sporting News ROY and MLBPA ROY He didn't win the official award handed out by major league baseball but those two awards are voted on by a panel of players/managers/gms and the MLBPA award is by all current players.. So basically he won two of the ROY awards Did not know that. Thanks.
  12. I don't get this sentence at all. Two ROY awards? I didn't think that was possible.
  13. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ May 20, 2011 -> 03:57 PM) Sounds like the same exact scenario as Frank's return. Frank hit one out in his second AB too. But at least the Sox won that game. First time and last time I've ever seen a "walk-off" suicide squeeze.
  14. Anyway when they honored Crede all they really did was play a montage before the game even started. He was on the field stretching when they did it. Then in his first AB he got a standing O. Then he hit a homerun.
  15. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ May 20, 2011 -> 03:16 PM) Yes, and as I said, that is the reason it is so awkward. It was cool to do it for Peavy and Frank because they returned the following season to Comiskey. With these guys, it has been years. It's like, just let it go. The s*** was six years ago. I'm sure they would've done it sooner if they could've but that's MLB's unbalanced schedule for ya.
  16. I've had to make 2 best man speeches in my entire life. One was at my best friend's wedding who I have known since 2nd grade. It wasn't too bad. The other one was for my wife's (then GF) sister and her husband. At the time we had only been dating for about 2.5 years. So I didn't really "know" him all that well. I mumbled a few words, wished them luck and happiness and that was about it.
  17. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ May 20, 2011 -> 01:46 PM) But this point has been made. For Crede, it was the very next season that he returned. With these guys, it has been years and they both spent more time with the team after 2005. Again, it's not like these guys are throwing a s***-fit because of this. They are just pointing out that it's kind of stupid, which I believe most people could agree it sort of is. It's coming off as a lame attempt to get people to come out and to remind them of 2005. Like I said, I have no problem with this (and I don't think Tex or J4L do either). Crede was still with the Sox in 06, 07 and 08. He just happened to go to a division rival that they play every year. They honored him when he made his first start as an opposing player. This is the first time Garland will make a start at US Cellular field as an opposing player. Same with Uribe.
  18. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ May 20, 2011 -> 10:36 AM) Garland spent a long time in Chicago and was a quality pitcher with the White Sox and helped us gain a World Series trophy. Uribe made two of the best plays in the 9th inning of the final game of the world series, including making the final out. They deserve to be recognized. I'd imagine Garland was in Chicago before (with the angels) but this might be Uribe's first time back. Garland has exactly 1 start against the White Sox and it was in Anaheim in 2008.
  19. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 20, 2011 -> 08:16 AM) If we were the types of mods/admins you seem to think we are... or if this were a site that was actually restrictive like WSI (nothing against that, its just their preferred style)... then you wouldn't even be able to read these responses to your posts, would you? Carry on. If it were WSI this thread would have been locked after the first post.
  20. The problem with the light switch sounds like something that would happen at my house. We are pretty sure that whoever wired the electrical in our house was either drunk or a moron. Possibly both. We have at least three switches in our house that turn the power on and off to an outlet. So if you have something plugged into that outlet (like a TV) and hit the switch, it gets turned off. One of these is the single outlet in our bathroom. So it's impossible for us to have a nightlight in there. When they remolded our kitchen last year they found that some of the wiring in the kitchen was connected with the lights in the basement. They re-wired the kitchen to pass code and now half the lights in the basement don't work.
  21. QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 19, 2011 -> 11:41 AM) Nice hackers reference, I dont think anyone else but me and you have seen that movie. It got me into an early form of hacking on AOL back in the day. I went to see it with the rest of my fellow computer nerds when I was in high school.
  22. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ May 17, 2011 -> 01:40 PM) Something's worth is what someone is willing to pay for it I learned that lesson a long time ago and it applies to pretty much everything. I can claim that my house is worth $1 million but there's no way anyone would pay that much for it.
  23. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 17, 2011 -> 01:07 PM) Anyone know what is on fire on the west side of Chicago? You can see black smoke rising up just south of the Ike a few miles outside of downtown. It past Rush Hospital to the west and little more south. Car on fire on Roosevelt east of Cicero. EDIT: Now it says a truck is on fire. Going off of mapquest traffic report.

    Grillin?

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ May 17, 2011 -> 09:52 AM) Im looking to buy a grill for my apartment on campus next year, problem is my apartment doesn't have a balcony. We are in a building with a large common area in the middle where I don't think they really allow grilling but everyone does anyways. That said, I think a small/portable propane grill may be the smarter way to go, like the weber q100, but not sure on costs of propane compared to charcoal (for usage). I was originally thinking of getting one of those small Weber Smokey Joes. I will be grilling quite a bit, especially when its warm out. I have always used charcoal and actually have never used propane, so any suggestions or ideas are welcome. Remember, this is a college budget . I think it's cheaper to use charcoal vs. propane. FWIW, I've got a Smokey Joe that we use when we go camping and it works just as good as the larger version. Just make sure you get the actual Smokey Joe and not one of the cheap imitation ones. They usually don't have the adjustable vents on them which makes temperature control nearly impossible.
