Little Giants: Chicken little flee flicker on go. what's that? A pitch to Johnny. Pitch to Johnny, you can't pitch to Johnny, I'm Johnny!! (gives ball to Johnny) Now what? Run to him. (points at Johnny's dad at the end of the field)

Do they still teach cursive in school anymore? I don't remember the last time I wrote anything in cursive other than signing my name on something. I think I saw one in my parent's basement but I've never actually used one. I guess the first computer I ever touched was a Commodore 64 but that was just to play games on. The Apple IIe is the first computer I ever used in school. I actually had to google this because I don't remember it. I'd argue that they first met Michelangelo when he was a teenage mutant ninja turtle. Was there something else he did before he was a rapper?

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 12, 2010 -> 10:09 AM) Oh s***, how about the leg breaking scene in Misery. In the book she used an ax and a blowtorch.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 12, 2010 -> 09:58 AM) So, the 2nd kid not only costs more than the first, it also very conveniently decides to cost the exact amount required to bring the total to exactly $600k? Man, those 2nd kids must be really good at math. I don't trust those figues. Those costs have to include stuff like baby furniture, bottles, strollers, clothes, diaper bags, etc... All stuff that can be used/passed on to the second child.

Pet Semetary where 3-year-old Gage gets hit by the truck and all they show is a bloody shoe rolling across the road. Then at the end of the movie where the father had to stick him with a needle to "kill" him again. As a parent, these were especially disturbing, although the desriptions in the book were much worse.

34 billionaires pledge to give away 50 percent of wealth
Iwritecode replied to HuskyCaucasian's topic in SLaM
So that's a minimum of $17 billion they are giving away. I could use a couple thousand to pay off a few bills. -
QUOTE (jasonxctf @ Jul 27, 2010 -> 10:13 AM) the last few times ive had to go to the DMV, its been smooth sailing. I was always able to go to the DMV in Oregon, IL. It's just a small little town so the DMV was always empty when I went. No lines!

QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Jul 23, 2010 -> 11:03 AM) My son and daughter are asking for Pierzynski jerseys for their birthdays. Does anyone know where I can find some that aren't outrageously expensive? I found some Sox gear at Kohl's for between $20 - $35. Got my daughter a Quentin jersey shirt and some shorts.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 03:55 PM) This past weekend I went out with a stripper (ok, you're probably thinking WTF there must be a long story involved - the answer is yes, there is) and she introduces me to a friend at the bar, also a stripper but both dressed normally since they weren't at work. Stripper #2 is really friendly. Stripper #1 leans over to me and says "yeah, she is really cool and a sweetheart, but don't drink anything after her." lol. Don't gotta tell me twice. She texts me at the table and says rumor has it she has HIV. I know you can't really get HIV from drinking out of the same cup as someone (at least I'm pretty sure that's how I remember), but still... yeesh. You can get cold sores though.

QUOTE (Controlled Chaos @ Jul 16, 2010 -> 11:31 AM) As others have noted...it's pretty simple to do it yourself. With that said...When I bought my last battery at Walmart, I saw a sign that they have free installation. It would save you a trip too, cause you have to turn your battery in to get the extra money off. You can always return the old one the next day. FWIW, it's an easy job depending on WHERE the battery is located. I just changed mine a couple of weeks ago and had to remove a stabalizing bar (I think that's what it was) and move a fuse box out of the way. My friend has a car with the battery located underneath the windshield washer fluid container. With my suburban I can just crawl inside with the engine and do the work. There's tons of space under there.

QUOTE (CrimsonWeltall @ Jul 15, 2010 -> 12:08 PM) I think your numbers are a bit inflated. You don't have to cook one ingredient at a time, things like a pot of simmering water don't require constant attention, you can accomplish other things while they're cooking, you don't have to run the dishwasher every night unless you're a huge family or have very few dishes, etc. Yeah, it can take SOME work, but I think there's a lot of excuse-making too. If one can spare 15 minutes to drive to McDonalds and wait in the drive-through for a breakfast meal, they've got the time to pour a bowl of cereal and peel a banana. But cereal is far more difficult to eat on the way to school/practice/etc...

Man defends property against 'illegal' thieves....
Iwritecode replied to juddling's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 9, 2010 -> 11:56 AM) Not at all. Passenger in the truck, right? I'd assume he was probably looking at the man yelling and then shooting at him, that only makes sense. Besides, even if he's facing forward, still can get shot in the face. You'd need a medical examiner to give you more information as to the trajectory of the bullet. It would also match with the guy saying he was almost run over. Just a guess though. -

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 9, 2010 -> 10:55 AM) The story says he saw them from his window, yelled at them, and fired as they fled. Then later he's quoted as saying they tried to run him over. Seems there are some inconsistencies in his story, so I tend to be skeptical of his claim that they tried to run him over. Needs further investigation. And I doubt the cops would have asked for all those charges if their investigation led them to believe he really was being threatened. The guy had gunshot wounds in his face, so that would lead me to believe the man with the gun was in front of the truck at some point in time. -

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 1, 2010 -> 09:51 AM) In the end there's two major hurdles for the Bulls or Nets (or any other potential suitor): (1) money and (2) his "hometown" connection. To me it's like growing up near Comiskey, being a huge Sox fan, being drafted and playing for good Sox teams, and then being offered to go to a team like the Yankees that could potentially offer you a better chance at a title (but no guarantee) but also a lot less money. I don't think it's a slam dunk that you leave. I thought he grew up a fan of the Bulls and Jordan more than the Cavs.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 01:09 PM) As you shop different stores, you should be building a mental map of what costs what and where. You can go to store A week 1, store B week 2 etc. and stock up on what's good there to avoid having to go to all of them on the same day. Honestly, we do go to other stores when they have sales or we have coupons. But that probably only accounts for about 20% of our total shopping.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 01:06 PM) Which remains the definition of a convenience store. It's a different type of convenience store from the gas station down the street, but you're still paying extra for convenience. Not on everything though.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 01:00 PM) Exactly. It's a convenience store. Which means you're not paying the lowest price on most items and you shouldn't pretend that you are. I was actually comparing spending a couple of hours at Wal-Mart and getting everthing I need at once to spending half the day driving around to 3 or 4 different places to save a few bucks.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 12:44 PM) I've barely mentioned local small businesses. It's the manufacturing/ industrial jobs that have disappeared from this country that are bringing down the lower and middle classes, and Walmart's business practices are a part of that. Remember when they used to proudly advertise "Made in America"? Even "American" products aren't made in America anymore. A friend of mine was just looking at a Chevy that's assembled in Canada with an engine from China and a transmission from Japan.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 12:20 PM) I'm arguing against jobs disappearing and being replaced 1 to 1 at best with low-paying, no-advancement retail jobs. Are these mom-and-pop shops that are disappearing really offering better wages, more opportunity for advancment and better benefits?

I can't find the original post with the link it in but this report seems to have a flaw in it. It says that "Four of the five stakeholder groups are being served poorly". The groups are customers, shareholders, vendors, community and workers. According to the graph in the report, shareholder expectations are being met at 100% and customer expectations are being met at around 70%. Both of those are higher than anyone else. (which means it's only 3 of the 5). Wal-Mart is really, really good at making a lot of people happy.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 11:54 AM) Yes. And Walmart relies on them remaining on government programs to keep their prices superficially low. So instead of having a job and relying less on the government, you'd rather have them be unemployed and rely soley on the government?
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 11:44 AM) hey, jenks paid for part of a year of college on less than that! what are these poor people complaining about! We end up paying the real costs of these goods through all of the government programs their employees rely on and the tax breaks they get. Walmart just gets to make big profit in the middle. Aren't these people already relying on government programs?
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 04:04 PM) Like i said, between coupons, rebates, grocery stores, Walgreens, CVS, Target, Aldi, and occasionally a few other stores, I haven't had any need to stop at Walmart, I'm constantly beating their prices. If I want something higher quality, I'll go to the farmer's market or the organic store nearby. Then again, I have lots of options nearby. The whole reason why I'm inching towards your side is that in truly blighted areas, there aren't that many options. I would argue that you might be paying a little more on some items but you are saving on time and gas and sometimes convinience if you have to run out at 3AM and no other place is open.

What jobs are growing in the DuPage and Chicagoland area?
Iwritecode replied to The Beast's topic in SLaM
QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Jun 22, 2010 -> 01:35 PM) The biggest thing from that turnover is going to be losing the senior programmers and their leadership and knowledge from their experiences. That's part of the reason I have my job now. So I can learn from these guys before they retire and gain more experience. It also helps that I already have 12 years experience in this field and I'm only 32.
