Yermin retiring? Nope. Wait, maybe yes? Wait, he's active in Charlotte again.
The continuation is probably worth including. The line about people paying to watch Yermin play is good - it's true, people aren't really there to see Yermin. They're there to see the team as a whole - or Rodon, Lynn, Giolito, Robert, Tim, etc.

Remember when Ozzie and Ozney got so offended that Ozney was drafted in the 22nd round that Ozney didn't sign and he was never drafted again? And how Oney Guillen ragged on Jenks, who famously battled depression and addiction, for crying in the clubhouse, leading to his resignation as a scout? Apples don't fall far from the tree.

The Cleveland Guardians
I really should have clarified - when I meant everyone, I meant nationally and amongst people who weren't already SI Yankees stakeholders. I had a bunch of friends around (granted, I live in Brooklyn and work in Manhattan) that loved it and some bought merch.

The Cleveland Guardians
Yeah, the Staten Island Yankees were able to get away with Pizza Rats rebrand - everyone loved it and you can still get that gear. (except reportedly the Yankees, and that reportedly might be part of why they got dumped). Caulfield mentioned the Rocket City Trash Pandas. I'm debating getting a blue "Ballers" jersey because it looks super clean. My brother owns an "Iron Pugs" shirt because that was a great promo. No one cares about the Winston-Salem Dash or Fresno Grizzlies (but everyone loves the Fresno Tacos).

The Cleveland Guardians
Spiders - judging by here, r/Baseball, Twitter, and Facebook - was the very, very popular choice by non-Cleveland fans. My friends from Ohio/Cleveland on Facebook joke about the Spiders record / seem indifferent to Guardians. Kyyle's right in that this seems like the safe choice. After reading that Reddit thread, I got admit, Commodores would have been a pretty baller name: https://www.cleveland.com/letters/2021/01/cleveland-commodores-would-tap-into-powerful-battle-of-lake-erie-history.html

"We're buyers this deadline." GM receives panicked phone call from ownership. "But also sellers."

The Cleveland Guardians
Meanwhile, Cleveland fans (at least on Reddit) are relieved that it was anything other than Rockers or Spiders. They wanted Commodores, but are cool with Guardians as a second option.

The Cleveland Guardians
Dodgers is because people in Brooklyn used to dodge trolleys. Their name history: Hartfords (they moved from Hartford) Bridegrooms / Grooms (several players got married in one season) Superbas (named after a circus act) Trolley Dodgers, eventually shortened to Dodgers. Reds are named ... for a color. If they picked that name today they be ripped, since it doesn't have big ties to Cincinnati or anything. Rays was a PR move to drop Devil. It's dumb. Cubs was because after their team leader left, they became the Remnants and worst-name-of-all-time, Orphans. They decided a baby animal would be better, so they became Cubs. Philadelphia Phillies would be like having the New York New Yorkers.

The Cleveland Guardians
I'm considering that our team is named after an article of clothing and we only like it now because it's over a century old. Lots of sports names suck and only become good over time. Examples of teams that would be eviscerated if named today: - Either Sox - Dodgers - Knicks - Rays ("sunshine" version) - Reds - Browns, but Orange - Lakers - Jazz of Utah Variety (to be fair, they are mocked for this) - Cubs - Phillies These are the ones off the top of my head. I'm sure there's more.

7-23 GT: Sox @ Brewers (7:10pm)
In other words, you're a contrarian.

The Cleveland Guardians
Yeah, the font sucks. They really shouldn't have gotten a new font.

The Cleveland Guardians
It's a reference to the Guardians of Traffic statues in Cleveland. Dropped the ball not being the Spiders, but Guardians isn't a bad name. https://photos.clevescene.com/10-things-you-should-know-about-the-guardians-of-traffic-statues-since-you-might-be-rooting-for-the-guardians-soon/?slide=1&press-bridgestonecutters_544d1a5741

Yermin retiring? Nope. Wait, maybe yes? Wait, he's active in Charlotte again.
Damn, somehow no one posted the phoenix. Just using Google translate, but: Dude just probably had a really bad day. People can have those. The only reason this got amplified is because social media has removed a lot of the barrier between athletes and the public, the 3-0 pitch episode, and Yermin's outsized personality. Think of all the colorful characters baseball has had in the past. Do you honestly think none of them thought about about retiring in the middle of the season? Now imagine they grew up in an era with social media. Eventually one of them would have just posted it. Now add in a controversial moment with their manager earlier in the season that was the talk of baseball. Whether it was logical or not, everyone would connect the two.

Cruz traded to TB
Yeah, I wouldn't want to beat this price for Cruz when we have actual holes to fill.

Watch this have just been a combination of shitty Instagram autotranslate + Yermin's real intent be "retiring from social media" or something like that.

Is your next unbearable schtick going to be "Gogurt for Yogurt"?

Trade Deadline Thread
Yeah, hard to see us going from names like Luke Shilling, Matt Foster, and Jace Fry to Ramos and Yolbert. If Tyler Johnson hadn't imploded, he'd be a good name to throw around.

White Sox considering Nelson Cruz
I can see Goodwin hanging around over Sheets due to vet status and Sheets' options. That way if (god forbid) an injury happens in the playoffs, Sheets can come back up. I think Lamb is DOA at this point.
-
White Sox considering Nelson Cruz
If Cruz is here, Sheets is definitely in the minors and Goodwin is as good as gone when Eloy arrives.

White Sox considering Nelson Cruz
Well, here's the situation: LF: Vaughn / Eloy / Leury CF: Robert / Hamilton / Leury RF: Engel / Sheets / Leury DH: Eloy / Sheets / Grandal / Burger / Abreu / Vaughn / Collins (tried to sort this by playing time, but who knows) 1B: Abreu / Vaughn / Grandal C : Grandal / Collins 3B: Moncada / Burger / Mendick / Leury 2B: Leury / Mendick SS: Anderson / Mendick / Leury I know one of Burger or Sheets has to go down in this scenario, but yeah, Cruz doesn't really fill a need like a 2B does.

How did this take not basically close out the hot takes in the thread?

Marvel Entertainment Thread
I'm gonna guess it's the pandemic + simultaneous release. WandaVision, Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Loki have everyone salivating. Shang-Chi and Eternals might struggle a bit as new IPs, but Spider-Man won't be getting the D+ treatment and Dr. Strange is going to be coming off of WandaVision and Loki, so I'm guessing people will be jazzed.

All things considered, I hope Yermin is doing ok mentally.

Luis Robert cleared for Rehab Assignment
Can you imagine if Eloy and Luis' rehabs had coincided? Dash OF would have been fun as hell for a few weeks.
