Right, the players have said they'll play under the previously agreed upon deal. The owners just don't like that deal anymore.

It's more like they're a cage match, but the players are in the corner with their arms down saying "we're done. Can we just exit the ring?" while the owners are refusing to lift the cage.

Removing the anti-trust exemption or forcing the owners to make their books public as a condition is what makes the most sense. Maybe having owners who like baseball makes the most sense.

The official mouthpiece for MLB is Manfred, who previously said there would 100% be baseball this season. Then backtracked days later. The players have told MLB to just tell them when and where to play under already agreed upon terms and the owners have said only if the players agree to not file a grievance. The owners know that they have negotiated in such bad faith that they're holding the season hostage because they know they'd lose in court.

I don't understand why it couldn't just start in July 2021 as normal.

Journalists, actually. Some are for high earning journalists ($100k+ at the BIG companies) to prevent cuts (which I haven't heard those people publicly complain about), but they've happened at smaller outlets as well.

Playing less games at a prorated amount is way less.

Players: We know were going to make $20, but we'll take $10. Owners: How about $5? Players: No Owners: 50% of $10? Players: No Owners: 50% of $20, but that percentage only comes out of half of the $20. Players: No Owners: Why are you negotiating in bad faith???

Every time the players negotiated fewer games, they negotiated less pay. They started at 114, then 89. Each time that's a paycut for the players, they just want prorated pay for each game. MLB makes hand over fist money, irregardless of fans (see the above link), and KBO getting fans shows just how starved for content people were. Instead, the owners made the exact same offer every single time. They wanted as few as games as possible, or if they wanted more games, to pay the same amount. MLB has a legal monopoly, they strong arm cities into giving them taxpayer funded stadiums, pay minor leaguers poverty wages, and won't even prove that they'll lose money this season. They agreed to a deal with the players and are upset that they have to honor that deal.

Rob Manfred has to lead, he doesn't know how to do that.

But instead of not only can the owners not see the forest through the trees, they're just deciding to burn the forest to the ground.
