NBA Thread 2013-2014
QUOTE (Jake @ Jan 16, 2014 -> 08:49 PM) Sacramento currently has the 8th worst record in the league and has been playing better since the Gay trade. We have a shot at getting that pick this year Maybe the Bulls get 3 firsts this year and can package to move up since Thibs is the anti-tank.

Rosenthal: Tanaka to Yankees
QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jan 16, 2014 -> 08:36 PM) I'd always be interested to see what people think justifies a contract of a certain amount. Say we signed him for 20 a year.....what numbers does he need to put up for that? What does Kershaw need to put up to justify 30? Can he? Just playing devil's advocate, ya know. Will Tanaka need to win the Cy Young to more or less justify the contract that he's going to get? Well, 1 WAR = $5M, right? So he'd have to average 4 WAR per year. Pitchers who had a 4 to 5 fWAR last year: Derek Holland 4.8 Doug Fister 4.6 James Shields 4.5 Mat Latos 4.4 David Price 4.4 Jon Lester 4.3 Jhoulys Chacin 4.3 Hisashi Iwakuma 4.2 Jose Fernandez 4.2 Cole Hamels 4.2 A.J. Burnett 4.0

Rosenthal: Tanaka to Yankees
QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 16, 2014 -> 08:09 PM) Why would he take 10/100 like you mentioned, when he could get more money for less years...and then sign another huge contract if he does well? Oh, the 10/100 was a joke. I expect he'll get around $18M/year I'm saying if the number is around that (18M), would it be smart for the Sox to add deferred payment to the end of the deal?
-
Rosenthal: Tanaka to Yankees
Legitimate question: If the Sox did a Bobby Bonilla type thing that paid Tanaka $2M for 10 years after his contract was over, would that be a smart or dumb move?
-
Rosenthal: Tanaka to Yankees
Sox sign him for $10M a year for 10 years. All other teams get pissed.

Rosenthal: Tanaka to Yankees
QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 16, 2014 -> 07:45 PM) I would be stunned if it's not the Yanks, Dodgers or Cubs. Thing is, if the Cubs want to be dumb and give him something like 5/120....then I hope they get him. White Sox will come in and just swipe him from all.

QUOTE (Frank_Thomas35 @ Jan 16, 2014 -> 10:06 AM) This is exactly what Hahn said it would be like in his statement. He said negotiations and anything else will be kept quiet out of respect till Mr. Tanaka makes his final decision. I think it may be a good thing we have respected their wishes. I have read that the NYY may have taken themselves out of it by all the stuff the have supposedly leaked. Who knows anymore. But just because we're quiet I wouldn't necessarily count us out. And for the record Hayes tweeted last night one source said "dOnt count the White Sox out." The Sox seem to have been the most "respectful" towards Tanaka, whatever that's worth. They said they met with him and had Merkin write a sales pitch, that's it.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 15, 2014 -> 04:27 PM) That was nothing compared to when we thought Miguel Cabrera was coming to us only to have an hour go by and he was a Tiger. And man the proposed package we were sending to Florida was such garbage. The proposed package we were sending was (in retrospect) a world better than the Tigers. I remember it included Danks or Floyd, either of which would be better than anything the Marlins received.

Kershaw Signs Record Contract
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 15, 2014 -> 03:22 PM) ESPN reporting they have reached agreement on a 7 year, $215 million deal. Wow. That brings their payroll to roughly $240M this year. How the f*** are they gonna afford Tanaka?

Rosenthal: Tanaka to Yankees
Here's my 5 finalists: Yankees - Money, NY media, the history of the franchise. White Sox - Future, chance to pair with Sale, less pressure Dodgers - Money, Kershaw, contending Cubs - Money DBacks - Silent in all this, but money. With the Dodgers wrapping up Kershaw and the Yankees being bogged down with contracts, I can actually see the White Sox pulling this off. They're the only confirmed team to have met with him face-to-face and according to Rock, it seems their budget caps at $20M/year. I can't see the Dodgers or Yankees going above that.

2014 White Sox ZiPS projections
QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jan 14, 2014 -> 10:14 PM) Wasn't Nate Silver the one that said these systems typically underrate the Sox? Nah, FanGraphs wrote about how Nate Silver's projections weren't applicable to the Sox. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-white-s...ng-projections/ Except last year. Last year we were worse.

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Jan 14, 2014 -> 09:30 PM) I love anything that pushes The Show to be even better. I feel they got a little complacent the past couple years because they know 2K baseball was never going to cut in to their sales. I doubt this does anything. It'll be like NBA Jam's return, not a full fledged game.

Bobby Jenks wants to make a comeback
QUOTE (Jake @ Jan 14, 2014 -> 07:23 PM) I think Bobby is a really good person. After reading that story, I wish I could be at Soxfest just to shake his hand and let him know that we'll always be fans of his. Sounds like he has a ways to go in his return attempt, but if I'm the Sox I'd have no problem offering him resources to help with his rehab process with the understanding that he has a spot with us when he's ready. I kinda wish I could go to do the same thing.

http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/reds...akas_agent.html Red Sox didn't meet with Tanaka, but talked with his agent. It's a big show of respect that the Sox met him in person and just didn't talk to his agent. They even flew out to meet him. Don't under estimate the effect that can have.

Rosenthal: Tanaka to Yankees
QUOTE (oldsox @ Jan 14, 2014 -> 06:34 PM) If Sox sign Tanaka, how much does the attendance increase? 15 starts at home probably means at least 5000 extra per game, especially if he does well. If he, Sale and Quintana propel them into a pennant race, a lot more than that even. Tanaka is about as high risk/high reward as they come.
