The 4 Things That Worry Me About John McCain
Let me preface this with the fact that there is a 0% chance that I'd vote for McCain this November. However, I think he is a standup guy and would make a competent President. That being said, there are 4 things that worry me about a McCain Presidency. 1) His Party- How much pandering will he have to do to the far-right wing of the party, especially if this far-right wing helped to get him elected. (litmus tests for supreme court justices, energy policies, etc) 2) His Age- Let's be honest. He'd be the oldest President elected, ever. We've seen how the day-to-day grind of the Presidency has changed Clinton and GWB, they look old and tired. What happens if we elect someone who is already old and tired. 3) His Temper- He's been known to have a temper issue. This can be good and bad. How bad can it be??? Does his ego get in the way of sound decisions? 4) His Ties to GWB- McCain stood by GWB during the 2004 elections. He had a choice of staying out of the spotlight, or even supporting Kerry. He choose to get involved and stand behind GWB. Why did he do this, and what did he gain by doing so? Now McCain is trying to backtrack a bit on certain statements or policies, why now... and not then?

Oil Issue
QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ May 20, 2008 -> 05:41 PM) I read an article somewhere that had GM engineers pushing for all their cars to have milage/MPG gauge installed on all their cars, because some study showed that people managed their driving better when they could actually see that they were saving gas. My HHR had an MPG counter on it, which I check often. Especially after the leadfoot Juddling drives it on deliveries. that's a very good idea.

Oil Issue
so with the skyrocketing price of Oil & Gas recently, I was trying to think of some creative issues to reduce the US's demand on Oil. lets keep adding to the list. 1) Consumers closely read their auto manuals on oil changes. Every 3k miles for some cars is a myth. Hondas, Accuras and Toyotas suggest every 5-8k miles, depending upon model. 2) As a sign of good faith, Nascar cancels 1-2 events per season. 3) Semi-Truck engines get a major overhaul, increasing performance.

At the quarter pole
QUOTE (sircaffey @ May 19, 2008 -> 08:03 PM) He's been blown apart in 3 of his 9 starts. Another 5 ER in 7 IP. Making 4 of his 9 starts virtual automatic losses. He's not been very good at all. so a guy who is running a 55-45% good start to bad start rating gets a D?
-
At the quarter pole
not sure if a guy who has 5 quality starts out of 9 deserves a D. take away that opening day start and Mark has a 4.24 ERA in the other 8 starts.

Nick Swisher
needs a day off.. please Ozzie he needs to re-group and re-focus.

Feast or Famine White Sox Offense will Take Years to Fix
great points all the way. this team is full of 2B's and HR hitters.. similar to the team of 2004 with Mags, Lee, Valentin, Thomas, Alomar/Olivo, etc. This team has been designed to act differently with Cabrera and Swisher however they have fallen into the hitting mindset of Konerko, Thome, Dye, AJ, etc.

buy a tomtom for $200 and spend the extra $300 on Sox tickets.

Don Cooper
just a side thought... if you are Don Cooper are you not looking for a managerial position next year. what a great job he has done with this team.

Disposing of Dirt

In Season Constructive Changes
1) you fire Greg Walker 2) you hope that Richar comes back healthy... soon... and cut Uribe and take your losses 3) you give Nick Swisher a few days off to get his head clear 4) you send Alexei Ramirez down to AAA and call up Jerry Owens 5) you sit Thome against LHP starters (putting Dye at DH, move Swisher to RF and start Anderson/Owens in CF) and PH him in later in the game if needed

I love Oz partly because he's certifiably mad
does ozzie honestly believe that 1 World Series Championship will give him and the organization a decade long pass in this town?

Masset (0-0) vs. Blackburn (1-1)- 12:10 CDT, CSN

4/29 - SOX @ MIN, 7:10 CT, WCIU
i think the other concern here is how long will John Danks, Gavin Floyd and Jose Contreras be pitching the way they currently are?

QUOTE (almagest @ Apr 30, 2008 -> 03:53 AM) Okay, so tell us a better metric for evaluating offensive production. You must have one, since you seem to know for sure that OPS isn't that useful. that was truly someone elses thoughts... many others believe that Gross Production Average, a variation of OPS, but more accurate and easier to interpret. The exact formula is (OBP*1.8+SLG)/4, adjusted for ballpark factor. The scale of GPA is similar to BA: .200 is lousy, .265 is around average and .300 is a star. A simple formula for converting GPA to runs is PA*1.356*(GPA^1.77).

Unlike many other statistics, a player's OPS does not have a simple intrinsic meaning, despite its usefulness as a comparative statistic. One fault of OPS is that it weighs on-base average and slugging percentage equally, although on-base average correlates better with scoring runs. Magnifying this fault is that the numerical parts of OPS are not themselves typically equal (league-average slugging percentages are usually 75-100 points higher than league-average on-base percentages). someone else's "opinion" about OPS averages.
