  1. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 26, 2007 -> 05:21 PM) Via the Energy Information Agency, a very useful energy data clearinghouse. great info. So if a politician was able to stand up and say, for our public interest and national security that we reduce crude oil imports from 10.1 million per day to 9.6 million by 2010 and here's how we do it... wouldn't the public be behind it?
  2. you're right. we've become so accustomed to naming our stadiums and having sponsorships of every event... "Harris Bank Holiday Lights Parade" "LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon" i really dont care if there is one or two more.
  3. my gut is that every candidate feels this way. most, however, wouldn't say it publicly. in any case, this country needs a "Kennedy Space Program-like" iniative to develop this. It would need to be a Top Priority and the public would have to see some kind of step-by-step plan with achievable goals along the way. I would love to see what the annual oil consumption is of this country. Maybe our goal by 2010 is to reduce this by 5%. I would love to see what the annual import oil consumption is of this country. Maybe our goal by 2015 is to reduce this by 15%.
  4. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Nov 19, 2007 -> 09:20 AM) You are referring to the same Indians that were a win away from going to the World Series last year, right? i think a japanese import would rather live and play in Chicago versus Cleveland.
  5. if we can't outbid or out attract the.. Royals Indians Rays and Pirates then this organization is in worse shape that I originally thought.
  6. QUOTE(elrockinMT @ Nov 13, 2007 -> 06:57 PM) If we had the chance to bring Jose Valentin back I would jump at it. He can play 3B-SS and 2B and I bleieve he spent sometime at CF also. He would be a great back up infielder. Jose always gave it 100%. minor league deal with spring training invite.
  7. the champion website is bs. personally, i graduated from D211. My best friend teaches there and many others in my graduating class do as well so take my random comments below with a grain of salt. The problem with the article is that it is misleading. It talks about 19% raises over 3 years. Sounds like a lot, right. But that 19% represents both COLA increases and year-to-year raises. We constantly see 3.8% CPI numbers, but those numbers dont account for items such as housing or gasoline. (We all know that housing prices up until recently were increasing at a rate of 10-12% per year, and gasoline has risen at 25%+) Teachers are supposed to be paid based upon the area in which they teach in. You teach in Schaumburg, housing prices are more. Thus it costs you more to live in Schaumburg and you get paid accordingly. I love those who complain about teacher salaries as a whole. You get what you pay for. Someone working as a receptionist in a doctors office (hs degree) complains that they make 40k a year and a teacher makes 50-60k per year, for 8 months. Guess what, that teacher is (a) certified (B) has a college degree © in most cases has a masters degree (d) works more than 8 hrs per day. Now that my rant is over, like life in general, you get what you pay for. Want to pay the average teacher 40k a year, guess what you are going to get. Also, don't think I don't see the irony of Soxtalk posters complaining about a teacher making 100k a year after the Sox just agreed to pay Juan Uribe $4.5 million.
  8. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Nov 8, 2007 -> 06:44 PM) So I am curious exactly how far people are willing to sacrfice in order to protect the rights of others? This is obviously a purely hypothetical thing, but I am curious about how other people on here would react to specific situations. If anyone else has some good ones, feel free to add them. Would you understand if a loved one died in an incident where the US held someone who had the information that could have stopped the event, but couldn't because their hands were tied on how they could get information out of the suspect? Yes I would. In the same situtation as if the suspect were a non-citizen, should a request for legal representation be allowed, even if it potentially allows an attack to occur? Yes it should. If you had the ability, could you represent that person knowing that your actions could allow that same potential attack to happen? No, I couldn't. Would you protest to protect the speech rights of someone who was saying something that absolutely discusted you to your core? What is the worst speech you could consciously protect? Sex? Religion? Pornography? Child Pornography? It would be tough, but yes I could. Probably child porno would be the toughest. Would you allow your minor children to be exposed to any of the previous things to protect the freedoms of speech of others? Yes, all but child porno. If the US had intelligence on where someone like an Osama Bin Laden what level certianty would they need before you would be OK with them launching an attack based on that intel? 50%? 75%? 100% What about if there were civilians around him that would probably die in said attack? How about if one of the civilians was a family member? 75% or higher, confirmed by multiple sources.
  9. QUOTE(knightni @ Nov 7, 2007 -> 09:26 PM) He can hit .255. He's hit .252, .253, and .283 before. It's amazing what some guys can do in their contract years. i sure as hell hope so.. well i also ran a 4:55 mile a few years ago, doesn't mean that I can do it again.
  11. well that's the 64k question. does Kenny want to compete in '08 or build for the future? If it's compete for '08, I don't understand why you re-sign Uribe? Either (a) he's a poor starting SS, or (B) he's an overpriced utility backup. If it's build for the future, I don't understand why you re-sign Dye late last year and don't trade Garland. it seems that Kenny has multiple personalities???
  12. QUOTE(knightni @ Nov 7, 2007 -> 08:17 PM) Rhetorical, right? serious question. There are offensive holes at LF, CF, SS and 2B. Even 3B/LF, as good as Josh has been, can he hit higher than .265 next year? can this team afford to have more than 1?
  13. question for the board. Now that Uribe is back and Richar is pegged as the early favorite for 2b, here's my question... how many .250 and below hitters, can this team afford to have, while still being able to compete for 1st place in the division?
  14. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Nov 6, 2007 -> 10:14 PM) How about having no speed? No power? Very little ability to walk? Bad range? A weaker throwing arm than some people on this board? Sure, he gets quite a few singles, but he doesn't do anything else incredibly well, and on top of that he's been hurt for stretches of time the past 2 years. But no, he's a .300 hitter, welcome to the team Savior Eckstein. so you'd take a guy with no speed, power, no ability to walk, be an inning killer, with above average range and arm instead?
  15. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Nov 6, 2007 -> 10:22 PM) Will you ever look past batting average? Eckstein sucks and will be a rip off. if the Sox had other .300 hitters, I would. But we don't. Sure would be nice to have at least 1 on the team.
  16. QUOTE(SoxFan562004 @ Nov 6, 2007 -> 09:01 PM) I don't think I could stand the "grinder" articles about Eckstein if he signs i dont think i could stand the ".300 hitter" articles about Eckstein if he signs.
  17. just off the top of my head, i'd make winning in 2008 of utmost importance. i'd know that the fans are finicky and won't take 2 years of bad baseball in a row without a serious drop in attendance & revenue. (Thus harming future plans) I wouldn't put a significant plan for 09, 10, 11 seasons in place by sacrificing 2008. thus the moves/trades that I'd make would be minor. * Keep all of the starters. Have Contreras, Floyd, Danks battle for 4 & 5 spots in the rotation during spring training. The odd man out would go to the pen and serve as long-relief. * Move Josh Fields over to LF and sign either Rowand or Hunter for CF. (keep Owens as a 4th OF) * Bring in a mid-level 2B to compete with Danny Richar for 2B. Loser takes a Rob Mackowiak bench type position. (Graffanino, Grudzelanek, etc) * Sign David Eckstein for SS * Sign 2-3 solid pen guys to go along with Jenks, Wasserman, Logan, Thornton and the loser of the Starting staff. 1. Eckstein 2. Rowand/Hunter 3. Konerko 4. Thome 5. Dye 6. AJ 7. Crede 8. Fields 9. Richar/2B Bench 1. Hall- C 2. Ozuna- IF/OF 3. Owens- OF 4. Backup 2B/SS 1. Buehrle 2. Garland 3. Vazquez 4. Danks/Floyd/Contreras 5. Danks/Floyd/Contreras Pen 1. F/A 2. F/A 3. Loser of SP battle 4. Thornton 5. Wassermann 6. Logan 7. Jenks
  18. And how did the rest of his teammates feel about Anderson's attempts at the ultimate "honey''? Minutes later, Anderson was thrown in the pool by Buehrle, with Wilkinson the one who set him up for the attack. "Brian, you make the major-league minimum, and Hef makes that in one day,'' one teammate said. "Do you think she'll leave this mansion to come and live with you and your folks in Tucson?'' That was also the end of the afternoon, though the dripping-wet Anderson did get a nice robe as a consolation prize.
  19. wasn't there a story about BA at the Playboy Mansion acting like a jackass?
  20. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Oct 31, 2007 -> 12:27 AM) Why? Bonds is still one of the best hitters in the game, is one of the best hitters of all time, and is a huge fan draw, regardless of whether they boo him or cheer him. And don't use the steroids BS on me, because ARod could very easily be on it too, and that's an even bigger investment that would go down the drain; him, or any number of other free agents right now. He's never failed a drug test, so he's clean enough. Besides that, I made the remark tongue-in-cheek; I'd love Bonds, but I'd be surprised as all hell if the Sox are even mentioned in any rumors about him. two words.. Albert Belle.
  21. "i knew brooks robinson and mr. crede, with all do respect, you are no brooks robinson"
  22. BA for one of the San Diego firefighters.
  23. watch the sox make this trade and then sign an exclusive agreement with Kellogg's to have an outfield section where employees dress up like snap, crackle and pop.
  24. a little AL History lesson. you may need a few drinks to follow this. In 1901 there were 8 teams in the AL. (Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, Milwaukee, Philadelphia and Washington) Since 1901, there have been a few changes. BALTIMORE- The 1901 Baltimore Orioles became the New York Highlanders in 1903 which then became the New York Yankees in 1913. BOSTON- The 1901 Boston Americans became the Somersets in 1902, the Pilgrims in 1903 and finally the Red Sox in 1907. CHICAGO- The 1901 Chicago White Stockings became the White Sox in 1903. CLEVELAND- The 1901 Cleveland Blues became the Bronchos in 1902, the Naps in 1903 and finally the Indians in 1914. DETROIT- The 1901 Detroit Tigers have not changed. MILWAUKEE- The 1901 Milwaukee Brewers became the St. Louis Browns in 1902 which then became the Baltimore Orioles in 1954. PHILADELPHIA- The 1901 Philadelphia Athletics became the Kansas City Athletics in 1955 and the Oakland Athletics in 1968. WASHINGTON- The 1901 Washington Senators became the Nationals in 1905, back to the Senators in 1957 and then the Minnesota Twins in 1961. 1961 brought the addition of 2 new franchises, Los Angeles and a new Washington. LOS ANGELES- The 1961 Los Angeles Angels became the California Angels in 1965, the Anaheim Angels in 1997 and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 2005. WASHINGTON (PART 2)- The 1961 Washington Senators became the Texas Rangers in 1972. 1969 brought the addition of 2 new franchises, Kansas City and Seattle. KANSAS CITY- The 1969 Kansas City Royals have remained. SEATTLE- The 1969 Seattle Pilots moved to Milwaukee in 1970 and became the Brewers. Since 1969, additional franchises have been awarded to Toronto, Seattle and Tampa Bay. So... when you are watching the current Brewers team, you are actually watching the old Seattle franchise which was formed after the old Brewers team left Milwaukee for St. Louis and then Baltimore. When you are watching the Yankees, you are actually watching the old Orioles. When you are watching the Orioles, you are actually watching the old Brewers. When you are watching the Rangers, you are actually watching the old Washington franchise (the 2nd group) which was formed after the first Washington group moved to Minnesota in 1961. Make sense???
