  1. I also think that Dunn's volume of strikeouts and low batting average obscure the fact that he was 5th on the team in OBP and 2nd on the team in SLG, and there isn't one team in baseball that would pay $14M just to make such a person go away.
  2. No teams from those states are going, but five of their players are likely to get a #1 seed wearing green and white.
  3. I think it's more a function of the fact that White Sox fans have been very spoiled by having a franchise that very rarely gets stuck with bad contracts. The reality is that most big market teams regularly have one or more players in any given year who makes so much above his actual value that he's impossible to trade. 4. Yes, the US does extradite people, but since this was a case of double jeopardy I doubt it happens here. I think the bigger question is why the Italian government doesn't just make this go away. First of all, she's not getting extradited and won't see any more jail time anyways, and secondly, all this is doing is killing tourism and study abroad programs. I know my alma mater sends a bunch of students to Italy every semester, and they may rethink that after this.
  5. The "Summer Olympics" are officially just called the "Games of the [roman numeral] Olympiad" and don't actually use the word summer, but everybody calls it that to distinguish them from the "[roman numeral] Olympic Winter Games". Regardless of the season in the host country at the time of the event, the sports being contested are "summer" sports so they are still referred to as the "Summer Olympics"
  6. I have a hard time seeing the Winter Olympics ever being in the Southern Hemisphere. Very few SH countries participate, and only New Zealand has ever won a medal.
  7. Remember that the equator runs through the middle (more or less) of South America and Africa, so even the southern parts of those continents are in pretty warm climates. Sydney is 34 degrees south, comparable to Myrtle Beach, which is about 34 degrees north Rio is about 23 degrees south, comparable to Havana which is about 23 degrees north
  8. The 2000 Summer Olympics were held in September, which is a bit later than a usual Summer Olympiad. Sydney's average high only varies 17 degrees between January and July, so it was possible to have the games during what was Australia's early spring. Rio de Janeiro only has an 8 degree variance between average highs in January and July, so the usual August date is not a problem there.

  11. I predict no touchdowns in the first fourteen seconds.
  12. I remember it being 20 below in January 1994, and classes weren't cancelled. By far the coldest I've ever been. But I don't remember how long that cold spell lasted or how cold the winter was overall.

  14. Where's Hank Hill when you need him?
  15. Just make sure not to say "beet juice" three times in succession.
  16. You can't get ESPN3 unless you have an existing cable/satellite service that carries ESPN (or unless you are bumming someone else's login).
  17. I didn't say ESPN should do it, I'm just noting that if they did it would be the end of cable.
  18. ESPN is more or less keeping the cable/satellite industry alive. If they ever decide to sell their product directly to consumers, it's the end of their industry.
  19. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/colle...0,1139453.story It's good to see that Notre Dame is not letting "tradition" stand in the way of enhancing the facilities. Because it's about the team--IT'S NOT ABOUT THE f***ING BUILDING!
  20. Not at all a socialist, and as much as I'd love to see Notre Dame have that kind of competitive advantage, it would ruin college athletics. There has to be some kind of system that ensures that there are at least a few dozen schools that have legitimate chances to win championships. That doesn't mean that the system has to pay the players zero, but you can't go 100% the other way and make it a free for all.
  21. After Colorado, Indiana is probably the most pro-Broncos state right now.
  22. Plenty of nearby recent college graduates who are qualified to cut your grass.
  23. If you "open up the market", Texas and Notre Dame have the deepest pockets and are going to have the best teams nearly every year.
  24. Yes, last year Cooper changed to 99 to honor Kevin Hickey, and Flowers took 21.
