  1. Even assuming the Sox eat half of the salary involved, do the Pirates have enough prospects to make that a good idea for the Sox?
  2. Jake Peavy is close to eating lunch at Applebees, but Fridays and Chilis are still in the mix.
  3. Of course not, but using the word 'close' gets him retweeted and followed a lot more.
  4. To me, finding a taker for Rios makes me set an even higher price for Peavy, since now the Sox have less of a need to clear salary.
  5. He got voted out of office (which is quite an accomplishment for a Republican in Indiana). That's enough accountability, isn't it?
  6. Axelrod is the kind of guy you want to keep around the rest of the year to eat innings so the guys you're actually counting on for 2014 and beyond don't get overworked. You can always DFA him in March.
  7. I get that it isn't the same for everybody, but I was raised on road trips. Between the ages of 8 and 15, my family took road trips from Northern Indiana to Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, DC (twice), Colorado and California. And that's not including the dozens of trips to both Chicago and Indy that I don't really count because those were < 3 hours. As an adult, I've taken road trips from my various residences in the Midwest to Texas, Wyoming, New York, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Mississippi (twice), plus I did a complete loop around Lake Michigan. I could never confine myself to an island where the farthest I can get from home by car is 2 hours. I could certainly vacation there for up to a month, but living there would be out of the question. I'd rather live in Anchorage.
  8. Yes, if Peavy (or somebody else) isn't traded before gametime, they would have to send somebody down in order to make room for Rienzo.
  9. It was nice of Chuck to go ahead and confirm something the Tribune posted on their website several hours ago.
  10. If Peavy starts tonight for the Sox and then is traded tomorrow, he can't start for his new team until Sunday. If the Sox hold Peavy out tonight and then he's traded tomorrow, he can start for his new team Thursday, which might end up giving him one extra start for the new team down the line.
  11. There is a story in the Tribune about Rienzo being called up, but it says that he's starting tonight even if Peavy isn't traded, so it doesn't really provide any insight as to how close a trade might be.
  12. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseb...,0,755368.story So apparently Rienzo is starting tonight no matter what, but if Peavy isn't traded before the game starts, the Sox have to send somebody down to make room for Rienzo on the roster.
  13. We don't have the details, but my guess is something like this: For the rest of the regular season, If Crain pitches in 0-9 games, Sox get cash only and no player If Crain pitches in 10-19 games, Sox get player X at the end of the season If Crain pitches in 20+ games, Sox get players X and Y at the end of the season TB has to agree not to trade players X and Y to anybody else for the rest of the season.
  14. 256 appearances, 150.0 IP, 12-10, 2.10 ERA, 1 SV, 1.17 WHIP, 10.56 K/9, 2.71 K/BB
  15. From Cot's contracts: limited no-trade protection (may block trades to 21 clubs each season)
  16. I couldn't live in Hawaii. I enjoy road trips too much.
  17. Except that Crain is on the DL so nobody needs to be called up to replace him. EDIT: Plus, a last place team is not having one of their best starting pitching prospects in their ML bullpen instead of starting at AAA.

  19. I just knew the Peavy trade would be broken first in Brazil!
  20. Why would the Sox take a guy who is a FA at the end of the season?
  21. I think it has quite a bit to do with Braun, because he is the team's biggest star and you could argue that he is a big reason for the season tickets and other pre-sale tickets for the rest of the season. It's not just a way to sell more tickets, but to "make it up" to the people who already bought tickets that they now won't get to see Braun. Also, in encourages people who already have tickets to come to the game and pay for parking and other stuff rather than flood the secondary market with cheap tickets.
  22. If I had to rate the 8 cities in terms of which ones I'd like to visit 3 times a year: 1) Milwaukee 2) Pittsburgh 3) Minneapolis 4) Cincinnati 5) Kansas City 6) Saint Louis 7) Detroit 8) Cleveland So, yeah, based on travel alone I'd take the Cubs beat over the Sox beat by far. I'd miss the once a year trips to Toronto, Boston, and Dallas but I'd be picking up San Diego, Denver, and Atlanta.
