Swisher's OBP is currently .448. It could stay above .400 all season long if he stayed in the leadoff spot argubly.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Apr 20, 2008 -> 02:03 AM) Bulls***. I copied that definition from THT. Obviously not everyone agrees. I think it's a pretty damn good stat to use when judging someone's offensive performance though. Because although Quentin's hitting below .250 for example, but because his OBP and SLG are so good, he'll have a real good GPA.
-
Well here's everything I can find on GPA; And the explanation from the creator, Mr. Gleeman;

QUOTE (shipps @ Apr 19, 2008 -> 11:20 PM) Where is the ballpark factor adjustment?Is it in the 1.8 or the /4?And how do they come up with those numbers? Well let's crunch some numbers and try to work it out ourselves. Quentin's GPA is .297. He has an OBP of .373 according to THT, and a SLG of .551. (.373 * 1.8 + .551) / 4 = .306 Uribe's OBP is .228, SLG of .283 (GPA of .168) (.228 * 1.8 + 2.83) / 4 = .173

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Apr 19, 2008 -> 03:21 AM) And yet, the teams that do win those games always win the Championship. That's another factor into why I think Paxson is looking for that type of coach.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 19, 2008 -> 03:13 AM) I certainly would be a fan of Thibodeau defensively, I would like to know what he would do about offense though if I was in Pax's chair. I certainly like the idea of fresh blood instead of a retread. I think he deserves to be given that chance. I mean everyone says, go offense and fast break, but look at Memphis. They were terrible this season under Marc Iavaroni. Thibodeau has been a successful assistant wherever he's been, and if he has the Bulls playing as good as the Celtics have been defensively this season, would anyone here be complaining?

QUOTE (rangercal @ Apr 19, 2008 -> 01:49 AM) Ray Allen and KG say hi I'm talking about coaching wise. And don't underestimate the impact James Posey has had either. Argubly the best defensive SG/SF in the game today (Bruce Bowen is too much of a dirty player for mine).

QUOTE (YASNY @ Apr 19, 2008 -> 10:46 PM) What's GPA? That's the 2nd time I've been asked that. GPA stands for Gross Production Average. It's a stat used from the Hardball Times. A variation of OPS, but more accurate and easier to interpret. The exact formula is (OBP*1.8+SLG)/4, adjusted for ballpark factor. The scale of GPA is similar to BA: .200 is lousy, .265 is around average and .300 is a star. A simple formula for converting GPA to runs is PA*1.356*(GPA^1.77). For comparions sake, Uribe has a GPA of .168, Cabrera a GPA of .242, and Pierzynski a GPA of .304.

QUOTE (TLAK @ Apr 19, 2008 -> 09:33 PM) But Owens would be nice to have around to run for one of the cloggers in a late tight game. While Anderson runs fast, he is not a base stealer. The way the guys are going, I agree neither is going to play ahead of Quentin, Swisher, Dye. Owens base stealing is an added dimension that BA doesn't bring. If I ran the White Sox, I'd switch them out. And it's got to be BA, you can't go with only Zoomer as your only IF sub. We could have used Owens in Baltimore for Dye in the 10th. JD drew 7 pegs to first but really wasn't a threat where as Owens might have gotten AJ a straight fast ball to hit. A real live base stealer can change the dynamics of an at bat, whether he steals or not. My Dodge ain't broke, but I'd sure like a Corvette better. If the Sox need a pinch runner in those late situations, they can just use Pablo Ozuna for now, and they have done plenty of times before. And I don't think Ozzie has really shown a propensity this season so far, for putting in those guys late in guys whether it's BA for his defense in for Dye late in a game with a lead, or putting in Ozuna when you have a guy on base. Give Owens some AB's in Charlotte to make sure that when he does come up, he's ready to contribute in whatever role he's given.
-
Well I'm glad the Sox chose the right option here. You don't fix what's not broke. And the Sox offense before today was averaging 5.53 runs a game, which is the top in the American League. Give Owens a month or so in AAA to build up some value, and get him hot again, and then you look at it down the road.

4/19 Gamethread: Sox (10-6) at Rays (7-10); 6:10; WGN

Let's keep the good offense coming, and let's hope MB can pitch another stellar outing. Go Sox!!!! -
Look at this stat; And we're actually getting guys on base in front of them now. Also Quentin currently has a GPA of .297 before today's game. To get .300 for that, you're considered to be an offensive star. But as for the game, Javy's pitched very well in his last 3 starts now, and the offense keeps coming through. Real good chance for a sweep looking at the pitching matchups for this series.
-
Either way, it's pleasing to see Shriek have the start that he has had. He keeps this up, he should be in W-S pretty soon. And he fits the mould of pitching prospects the Sox brass have tried to draft over the past season or 2. Guys with good fastballs (with a good sink on them) and average other stuff that they hold they can develop over time.

That's an interesting point RE Mac and Thornton. At some point, Ozzie's going to have to use them more, or call up Wasserman.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Apr 18, 2008 -> 05:42 AM) Personally I always liked Carlisle and I'd have zero problem with him as the next head coach. I also have no problem going with Thiddeau. The problem with Carlisle and I'm sure Greasy would probably back this up, he basically doesn't allow any freedom at all whatsoever for his players. For example, for each offensive possesion, he forces the PG to slow down to a walk, and give him the play, the players can't decide what they want to do on the fly. And that has grated on his players wherever he's gone. I just get the sense, you'd have another Skiles situation, 2-3 years from now if you hired him.
-
Bulls should go for Thibodeau IMHO. It's been him and not Doc Rivers who's had the most impact on that group in Boston. Bulls would become an elite defensive team with him in charge.
-
According to Joe Cowley; Good move? Uribe's hitting .146 currently.
-
Haha sweet (for GTAIV);

Tonight just shows the value of a good bullpen. Unforunately tonight they didn't get the job done, but we can't really complain at how they've gone so far. The key will be, this type of thing needs to become a one off, and not the norm as we saw last season as they started out great, but then fell into a complete hole. Another good outing for Gavin, which was very encouraging to see, and Quentin's OPS would be above .900 now I think.

Essay Help on a sports topic
DBAHO replied to Jimbo's Drinker's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
Whether NFL Draft picks should be paid like NBA Draft picks to fixed 3-4 year deals. Ethics in Sport. Should Sport and Politics mix (e.g Olympics / Tibet). Pro's and Con's of expansion teams over the past 10 years. Pro's and Con's on TV revenue for certain sports and how it affects fans etc. e.g the Blackhawks are a perfext example. -
Yeah I'd love to make a Roberts acquisition, but what would we offer the O's (and we've had this argument over and over again). Uribe is starting and will until Richar comes back for a couple of weeks, but if he is still hitting below .200, no matter how good his defense is, I think we need to make a change still. But anyways, great game by Jose and good to see Jim back on track a little.

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Apr 17, 2008 -> 12:31 PM) Sweet. Im really glad we got Hernandez back. Everyone thought it was a big mistake to let him go, and now we got him back. 25K is more than worth it. It was a major overreaction by some at the time, because they were worried about the state of our pen. And now with the additions of Linebrink and Dotel, it's the 4th best in the MLB currently with an ERA just above 3 IIRC.

What teams do you pledge allegiance to?
DBAHO replied to shipps's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
Baseball - White Sox Football - Dallas Cowboys Soccer - West Ham United Basketball - Orlando Magic Ice Hockey - Chicago Blackhawks Those are the major ones. -
Saw this in the Sun - Times; I think Jerry needs to get his priorities in order a little in terms of what offensive stat is going to offer the most value to the Sox in the leadoff spot. It's not stolen bases, it's OBP.
