QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jan 12, 2005 -> 03:57 PM) I never want to see Munoz start in a Sox game ever again. Diaz was ok, but I would still start Hermanson of either of those two in case we were playing a doubleheader or if El Duque wnet down. Plus we would have to mess around with roster spaces unless you are actually suggesting that Diaz or Munoz should be in the pen for the entire year. :puke Munoz won't be starting anyway, his long term future is definitely in the pen. Diaz could be effective as a starter in the future, but he needs to work on his other pitches. And don't forget about B-Mac either, he could be up with the team as a starter by July if there's an injury and he keeps improving. There's room for 1 guy on the pen out of Cotts, Adkins, Munoz, Grilli and Diaz, it's likely the pitcher who has the best spring training will get the job.

QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jan 12, 2005 -> 03:39 PM) Why? Kline signed for the same deal (5.5 million guaranteed,) is a left handed specalist, can not start if needed, and was in more demand (He was coveted by the Yankees.) But the Sox have guys like Munoz, Diaz etc. who can start if needed. All I'm saying is that it's definitely more likely Kline will have better stats or the length of his contract than Hermanson. Kline was coveted by the Yanks, but they were so caught up in the RJ sweepstakes, that the O's snuck in and signed him.

If the Bulls are going to make a move, they should go after Jimmy Jackson of New Orleans. He would come pretty cheaply, if the Bulls offered a young guy with potential like Chris Duhon etc.
-
If only the Sox signed Steve Kline instead of Dustin Hermanson. I can't believe Shoe is going to be making just a little less than Kline as well, especially after the year he had in St. Louis.

QUOTE(AnthraxFan93 @ Jan 12, 2005 -> 03:11 PM) stay away, I want Castillo... Would you give up Marte for him though? The next best lefty we'd have in the pen is Cotts remember even though Vizcaino is excellent against LHH.

QUOTE(JDsDirtySox @ Jan 12, 2005 -> 12:29 PM) BenMaller.com has learned from a baseball loving mole that the Oakland A's are near a deal that will send OF Eric Byrnes to Arizona for Pitcher Jose Valverde. Byrnes batted .283 with 20 HR's and 73 RBI's for the Athletics last season. Wow, the D-Backs are about to actually make a good move for once. Frankly why do the A's need to trade for Valverde anyways, their pen is pretty solid as it is.

I don't think there's any doubt Shoe would have the better stuff than Hermanson. The problem is SS is that he has no definitive role on what he'll be doing in Toronto. He wants to be a starter, but doesn't have the arm strength to go 7 or 8 innings each outing, and he won't last a full season. And he doesn't want to pitch in the bullpen. He could be an effective spot starter for a team though, but I'm not sure he'll appreciate that role either. Hermanson hasn't been effective as a starter much in his career but he did have experience closing last season, and that's what made him valuable in KW's eyes, he doesn't want Marte closing if Shingo doesn't produce in 2005. I'll be interested to see what his splits are this season, and how much of a disadvantage it is for him to pitch at the Cell instead of SBC Field.

Tadahito can either stay in Japan or come to the White Sox because right now, no other team in the MLB is coming to the party.

QUOTE(Mr. Zero @ Jan 12, 2005 -> 12:20 PM) Is this why I haven't seen DBAH0 around the past few hours? Get well soon! No that'd just be me being lazy and sleeping in during the summer holidays. And now I don't live in Sydney, luckily I live in a state that has CLEAN drinking water.

That's a fairly good signing for Riccardi right there. Lilly and Shoe will give them 2 good lefties in the rotation, if Shoe can stay healthy.

QUOTE(LDF @ Jan 12, 2005 -> 01:20 AM) i was never a clee fan, lets get that straight. i on the thinking that anyone is tradeable for the right price. we have a speedster with a low avg and a middle of the road rp. which pods is coming to the sox, the rookie of the yr or the one who played last yr??? so you don't mind trading people as long as we save money???? do you not think clee is worth more than we got from mil? Add A.J and El Duque onto that list. KW obviously didn't make the deal for those 2 players alone, otherwise it would have fallen into the Jim Bowden and Brian Sabean territory of bone headed moves this off-season.

QUOTE(quickman @ Jan 12, 2005 -> 01:17 AM) your certianly entitled to your opinion. I would not run out and say this guy has a curve ball like Zito's. Zito is a proven winner. Munoz has proven nothing. he will hang around because he is a lefty, if you want him on the team, then keep him. I don't necessary fall in love with unproven players. he has been talked about for three years. When should we stop thinking he is one of the great lefthanders to come around. he has slipped in the perception of our team and the baseball experts. He will not be great. Serviceable...maybe but lets not get out of hand and think we can dumb our crap on billy beane. Beane knows these are second rate players. That's the only point I am making. Some on this board tend to overrate and over inflate our talent. I never said Munoz had a curve ball like Zito's, I don't think anyone in the major leagues does, but it would be in the upper echelon's of major league curveball's. He's been talked about for 3 years, because it's not everyday a lefty who is 20 can make it in AA with a 6-0 2.61 ERA. I don't think anyone here has thought Munoz would be the next great lefty in baseball, all I'm saying at least, is that they guy has a chance to contribute out of the pen, if he is given the chance at some point in time. But he needs to cut down on his walks in the higher levels, and give up less homers. This stat showed how much 2004 was a Jekyll and Hyde year for him. B-Ham in 13 games started - 1 home run given up Charlotte in 13 games started - 11 home runs given up

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jan 12, 2005 -> 01:04 AM) I was just thinking I wonder if he is regretting not going to Chicago or somewhere quieter than NY. I wonder if Carlos Beltran is thinking that right about now........ -
I think it's unfair to bash Munoz and say that he won't make it as a bullpen guy. Frankly midway through the season in 2004, most of us thought he'd be in our rotation for a good period of time after the stats he was putting up at Birmingham. What happens, the guy has 1 real bad start (I blame this on pitching on 2 to 3 days rest) and is forced to stay in there and take one for the team, and doesn't have the same type of success down at Charlotte (a hitter's park) than he did down at B-Ham. He showed enough in Septemeber in the pen however to suggest, that's where his long - term future should be. A guy who's that young, and with a curveball that he has, shouldn't be given up on. Beane loves young bullpen guys who come cheaply, and I'm sure he'd be interested in Arnie for the right price.

I'm sure there was rumors of Loaiza getting a 3 year deal from Jim Bowden earlier in the off-season. They'll probably get him too now, with the Dodgers signing Lowe, unless some team sneaks in at the last minue like the Reds did with Eric Milton.
-
Well done to Goldy, certainly a deserving poster to be a mod round here.
-
Mobley wants a 6 or 7 year deal after this season. He's 30, so the team that does that, will be in serious trouble in the later years of that deal. I don't think Mobley really all put it together in Orlando either, the injury he had early probably didn't help much, or the emergence of Hedo, but 1 night he'd shoot 25, and the next he'd be in single figures. Still I don't particularly understand why Mobley was traded for a defensive shooting guard when there's already one on the roster in Stacey Augmon, who yes isn't half the player Doug Christie is. They probably needed another big guy who can score from the low post like P.J Brown or a backup point guard like Eric Snow. Still if Christie really improves our defense which he should do, I won't be complaining.

My thinking is the Sox are preparing themselves just in case Konerko is not back in 2006, with some backup in Gload and Hinton if he comes along in double A. Of course Rogo could move back to 1B, but I'd say that's unlikely.

QUOTE(qwerty @ Jan 11, 2005 -> 10:30 AM) They did not trade alot to get him. They raped arizona in the sexson trade. And Arizona wants to do the same with Baltimore in the Javier Vazquez. Whether Peter Angelos takes the bait though ..........
